Invasive Macrofungi In The United States: A Mushrooming Crisis, Emily Torres

Globalization has accelerated the spread of invasive species, making them one of the largest contributors to biodiversity loss worldwide. While invasive macrofungi remain largely absent from scientific discourse on invasive species, they represent a growing ecological concern throughout the United States. Invasive macrofungi disrupt forest ecosystems, alter soil communities, and displace native fungi. Beyond these ecological impacts, their presence and establishment profoundly affect human-nature relationships, most notably mushroom foraging and cultivation practices. This paper adopts a multidisciplinary approach to examine the ecological, economic, and anthropogenic impacts of invasive macrofungi in the United States. Introduction Extreme cold weather environments are challenging for medication storage and delivery, particularly for injectable analgesics vulnerable to freezing and device failure. These risks may compromise pain management in austere or operational settings where temperature control cannot be maintained. Sufentanil sublingual microtablets (sold in the UK as Dzuveo) provide an oral analgesic option with manufacturer-reported sub-zero stability. The European Union’s implementation of the CBAM is a climate change-driven initiative aimed at preventing carbon leakages. This thesis aims to investigate the underlying reasons for the variation in preparedness to comply with CBAM. Exposure to CBAM-covered Extra-EU imports serves as a proxy for preparedness, a measure of the economic constraints EU countries face. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, including Regression Analysis, Bayesian model averaging, and comparative case studies of EU countries. The results show a strong association between preparedness levels and institutional factors, particularly regulatory capacity. This paper examines the long-term impacts of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) in western Kentucky, framing its legacy as a form of “invisible fallout” in which economic growth was accompanied by delayed environmental and public health consequences. Established in the early 1950s, the plant served as a major economic driver, providing stable employment and transforming the regional economy. However, its operation involved the handling of radioactive materials and hazardous chemicals, leading to environmental contamination and occupational exposure risks that were not fully disclosed during its active years.

Red Lines, Green Blooms: Assessing The Effects Of Historical Environmental Disparity On Algal Communities In The Twin Cities, Mn, Georgia C. Akins

Redlining, a discriminatory housing policy from the 1930s, shaped lastng urban inequalites that may extend to environmental conditons. This study examines links between redlining and urban water quality in the Twin Cites using algal communites as indicators. Across 28 water bodies sampled in 2022 and 2024, physical, chemical, and biological metrics were compared by redlining grade. Results show limited relatonships between redlining and most variables, with only surface water temperature differing significantly. Nutrients and algal diversity were unrelated to redlining, instead reflectng present-day conditons. These findings suggest contemporary factors play a stronger role than redlining in shaping urban freshwater ecosystems.

Although 100% of Iceland’s electricity comes from renewable energy sources, it still relies on fossil fuels for land transportation, marine transportation, aviation, and some industry. Understanding geographic nuances in oil use is critical to achieving Iceland’s goals of carbon neutrality by 2040. As the island has one primary urban center with two thirds of the population, information is lacking about oil use in non-Capital areas and a gap between state and municipal climate plans. We studied the ecosystem stability of an End-Cretaceous ecosystem out of the Lance Creek Formation in Wyoming. This ecosystem represented a time interval immediately before the mass extinction wiping out all non-avian dinosaurs. Overall, our data suggests that stability was relatively good leading up to the asteroid impact that catalyzed the mass extinction.

How do genetic correlations between traits contribute to evolutionary processes? This study investigates the role of genetic linkage in an unexplained geographic cline of floral trait loss in Arabidopsis thaliana. A diagnostic characteristic of the Brassicaceae family is the arrangement of four long stamens and two short stamens in each flower. These short stamens are adaptive in outcrossing and have lost this function in highly selfing A. thaliana. Short stamens demonstrate incomplete loss across A. thaliana’s native range, with fewer stamens produced at lower altitudes and latitudes. This thesis evaluates the environmental, operational, and financial impacts of sustainable retrofit upgrades implemented through the GoodUse program by Southface Institute on three Sarasota-based non-profit organizations: Lee Wetherington Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, Suncoast Blood Centers, and Easterseals Southwest Florida. By using a mixed-methods approach, this study integrates quantitative data from Energy Star Portfolio Manager with qualitative insights from oral, on-site interviews. Open Space Management Plans (OSMPs) are increasingly used by municipalities to guide the long-term stewardship of natural lands; however, little formal guidance exists regarding how these plans are structured, developed, or organized in practice. While numerous OSMPs are publicly available, their compositional logic, procedural workflows, and thematic priorities remain largely undocumented within academic literature. This study addresses that gap through a qualitative document analysis of fifteen publicly accessible OSMPs from the western United States, published between 2015 and 2024.

This study examined algal and invertebrate community composition across eight rocky intertidal sites spanning northern and southern regions along the Gulf of Maine to assess how tidal height, site, and region shape species distributions and interactions. This thesis applies a critical lens to how the most influential corporate actors at the recent UNFCCC COPs seek to obstruct climate action and the green transition through a smoke screen of corporate environmental and sustainability discourses. Through a systematic deconstruction of these corporate documents, this study reveals a variety of key narratives through which corporations delay, deny, and foster inaction to climate action. Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used polymers due to its durability, low cost, and chemical stability; however, these same properties contribute to its persistence in the environment. It takes about 1000 years for PE to be degraded by microbes in nature. This study investigates a molecular design strategy to enhance the biodegradability of PE by introducing polar functional groups into its backbone through palladium-catalyzed copolymerization with a Vince lactam-derived comonomer. The Franklin Marble is one of North America’s most famous geologic units, a result of its complex geology, diverse mineralogy, and significant ore deposits. While it has been widely studied, a location that has received little attention is that of the quarries at McAfee, Vernon Township, NJ. This study addresses this oversight by investigating the mineralogy, geology, and geochemistry of the marble and associated geologic units found in the area. Fear is the predominant emotional appeal used in climate change messaging, though this appeal has been shown to cause disengagement. To motivate young people to engage in climate change, this study seeks to understand how Southern college students respond to different emotional appeals in climate change messaging.
