Computer Lab Instruction In Elementary Schools: Time For Instructional Transformation Or Worksheet Substitution?, Julia Kara-Soteriou Oct 2013

Computer Lab Instruction In Elementary Schools: Time For Instructional Transformation Or Worksheet Substitution?, Julia Kara-Soteriou

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

Lately, concerns are raised about the ways teachers integrate technology and about their students’ digital literacy skills. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate how elementary school teachers use their scheduled computer lab time. During this observational study emphasis was placed on the integration of literacy and technology and the extent to which integration supported the development of new literacies and promoted transformation of literacy tasks. The study took place in two elementary schools and included three weeks of daily observations in each of the schools. After the observations, interviews were conducted with teachers and school/district administrators.

The Effects Of English Language Arts Instruction Using Multimedia Applications On Grade Three Students’ Reading Comprehension, Attitude Toward Computers, And Attitude Toward School, Mathew Swerdloff, Karen Burke

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of targeted English Language Arts instruction using multimedia applications. Reading comprehension, attitude toward computers, and attitude toward school were measured. The study examined the perceptions, of selected students, of the use of these multimedia applications. A MANOVA revealed that students who participated in the treatment group and received English Language Arts instruction using multimedia applications scored significantly higher than students in the control group. Analysis of the qualitative data revealed three themes that recurred throughout the five interviews. Qualitative and quantitative data were triangulated, and implications for researchers were discussed.

The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Persistence In Adult Remedial Education, Carol Holmquist, Robert K. Gable, Felice D. Billups

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

Persistence in remediation as preparation for higher education continues at less than 50%. Self-efficacy may be a barrier to successful academic preparation. This study at a non-profit adult education site examined a relationship between general self-efficacy and academic self-efficacy and persistence. The survey data (N=75) indicated there was no significant correlation between the demographic characteristics and general self-efficacy, academic confidence, motivation, or persistence, but there was a significant correlation between general self-efficacy and academic confidence (r=.56, r2=.32, p

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

This paper presents a description of a project designed to field test a research-developed faculty development series on embedding Universal Design for Learning (CAST, 2011) into curriculum, instruction, and assessment. A description of Goodwin College, where the project was enacted, is presented. Goodwin is a four-year private not-for-profit postsecondary institution with an open admissions process and is similar in many ways to Connecticut’s community colleges. Highlights from and reflections on the journey of translating knowledge and skills gained are offered as examples of how professional development in universal design can affect faculty practice.

The Possibility Of Computer Modeling Language Change, Jonathan Mccollum, Dr. David Bowie Oct 2013

The Possibility Of Computer Modeling Language Change, Jonathan Mccollum, Dr. David Bowie

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Language is an ever changing method of communication. Linguists, in their systematic studies of languages, attempt to explain the changes that modify and sometimes eliminate languages altogether. Much research has been employed to discover the methods that keep language continually evolving.

Teaching Through Comparison, A Study Manual Focusing On French, German, And Italian Language Acquisition, Coogan S. Rencz, Dr. Mentor-Cynthia Hallen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Informing ourselves through comparison is a natural process. We seldom make decisions without comparing a few options. We evaluate the quality of everything from artistic techniques, to computers, to pets based on comparisons. Through the humbling process of trial and error we learn from our mistakes. We learn to evaluate the causes and effects of our conduct, habits, and our desires and choose the best action for every situation.

Images Of Womanhood In J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Joy Mcmurray, Dr. Steve Walker Oct 2013

Images Of Womanhood In J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Joy Mcmurray, Dr. Steve Walker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings continues to rise in stature in the literary world, but it also sustains a significant cultural impact: it was one of the most widely read and influential novels of our time even before the blockbuster films were released. Authors and critics also acknowledge Tolkien’s work as a major influence on the recently expanded fantasy genre, and it is difficult to find a fantasy novel that does not contain significant elements and assumptions initiated by Tolkien. Thus, between these books and his own books, Tolkien has had and will have a great …

Consciousness At The Back Of Things: Hope In Thomas Hardy’S The Dynasts, Andrea Lewis, Dr. C Jay Fox

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Thomas Hardy was one of the most successful and significant writers in England during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Though his mother wanted him to pursue a career as an architect, Hardy gave up his position as a draughtsman while in his early twenties when he began to find more success as a writer. By his death at age 87, Hardy had published fourteen novels, several short stories and plays, and hundreds of poems.

Building A Knowledge Base In Fijian, Adam Rich, Dr. Michael Bush Oct 2013

Building A Knowledge Base In Fijian, Adam Rich, Dr. Michael Bush

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The title, Building a knowledge base in Fijian, suggests a very lofty research project for one lone undergraduate student. Several scholars have studied Fijian since the arrival of Christianity to the islands in the mid-nineteenth century. Just seven years ago, the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah began teaching missionaries in the Fijian language. The program at the MTC is the longest continuous program for the teaching of Fijian outside of Fiji. This project was not meant to be the sole ‘building’ of Fijian language knowledge, but to research and assess current methods of Fijian teaching and propose changes for …

Pioneer Journals Of Rhoda Ann Dykes Burgess: A Project In Documentary Editing, Amy Lindsey, Dr. Leslee Thorne-Murphy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The published journals of Mormon pioneers have served as a great asset to our understanding of American history, but these have largely been the journals of prominent pioneer men. Surprisingly, most of the journals of common pioneer women have not been published, and so, are not accessible to genealogists or scholars interested in the history of the LDS Church and in America’s nineteenth-century women writers. Maureen Ursenbach Beecher, Professor Emeriti in English from BYU is compiling significant unpublished writings of Mormon pioneer women for publication in the “Life Writings of Frontier Women” series published through Utah State University Press. Upon …

Vocabulary Learning Of Kanji And Kana Words In Japanese, Rachel R'El Johnston, Dr. Masakazu Watabe Oct 2013

Vocabulary Learning Of Kanji And Kana Words In Japanese, Rachel R'El Johnston, Dr. Masakazu Watabe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Japanese has two types of writing: kana, which is essentially phonetic, and kanji, which is primarily logographic. I hypothesized that although they are not phonetic and orthographically more complex, learning kanji actually improves vocabulary learning. In order to test this hypothesis, I created a study comparing the learning of basic vocabulary for beginning Japanese students using kana as opposed to kanji. The study involved a pre-test, a thirty minute study period, and a post-test. The pre-test and post-test were exactly identical for all students. They each, along with the study packets, contained 100 vocabulary items in English and Japanese, equally …

Does Unification Of A Language Mean Unification Of A Nation? A Look At Education Under An Official Language, Meredith Kearsley, Dr. Michael Bush

Journal of Undergraduate Research

It has long been asserted that language is an integral and inseparable part of culture, and therefore identity. As such, language plays a powerful role in the political, educational, business, and leisure affairs of a nation. Language can aid in unification and it can also cause fragmentation. An example of a nation that faces the challenges that stem from a diverse linguistic background is the West African country of Senegal. As a nation, Senegal made the decision to declare French the official language of government, business, and education, while maintaining the six primary native languages as national languages. My research …

Simulation Of Electromagnetic Waves In The Magnetized Cold Plasma By A Dgfetd Method, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2013

Simulation Of Electromagnetic Waves In The Magnetized Cold Plasma By A Dgfetd Method, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The properties of electromagnetic waves propagating in magnetized plasma slabs and scattering from plasma coated spheres are investigated using the discontinuous Galerkin finite-element time-domain (DGFETD) method. The magnetized plasma is a kind of gyroelectric anisotropic dispersive medium. This anisotropy must be described by an electric permittivity tensor with both nonzero diagonal and off-diagonal elements. Instead of doing the convolution directly in the time domain, an auxiliary differential equations (ADE) method is employed to represent the constitutive relation. The algorithm is validated by studying the transmission characteristics via electron-composed plasma slabs and radar cross section (RCS) of plasma-coated spheres. All numerical …

PURPOSE: Patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and prior stroke are classified as high risk in all risk stratification schemes. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of New Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) to warfarin in patients with AF and previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).

METHODS: Three randomized controlled trials (RCTs), including total 14527 patients, comparing NOACs (apixaban, dabigatran and rivaroxaban) with warfarin were included in the analysis. Primary efficacy endpoint was ischemic stroke, and primary safety endpoint was intracranial bleeding. Random-effects models were used to pool efficacy and safety data across RCTs. RevMan …

The System I And System Iii Holocytochrome C Synthases In Cytochrome C Biogenesis, Brian San Francisco Oct 2013

The System I And System Iii Holocytochrome C Synthases In Cytochrome C Biogenesis, Brian San Francisco

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Cytochromes c are proteins that are involved in important redox reactions in organisms from every kingdom of life. C-type cytochromes, uniquely, possess a covalently bound heme. Since cytochromes c are assembled at their site(s) of function: outside of the cytoplasmic membrane in bacteria, in the chloroplast lumen, or in the mitochrondrial intermembrane space), their assembly poses unique challenges to heme trafficking and post translational modification. Three major systems exist in nature for cytochrome c assembly, termed systems I, II, and III. Using recombinant Escherichia coli, aspects of systems I and III were analyzed, with an emphasis on the synthase protein(s) …

Concomitant Occurrence Of Neurofibromatosis Type I And Lobular Capillary Hemangioma In The Oral Cavity: A Case Report, Rakhi Issrani Oct 2013

Concomitant Occurrence Of Neurofibromatosis Type I And Lobular Capillary Hemangioma In The Oral Cavity: A Case Report, Rakhi Issrani

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Neurofibromatosis type I is one of the most common autosomal dominant inherited disorders associated with deletion, insertion, or mutation in the NF-1 gene. Neurofibromas are the hallmark of the neurofibromatosis type I and usually appear during childhood or adolescence after the emergence of “café au lait” spots. Despite their occurrence in the head and neck region, neural sheath tumors are rarely seen in the oral cavity. Lobular capillary hemangioma is a histologic variant of pyogenic granuloma which is a common benign vascular lesion of the skin and mucosa. It is neither infective / purulent nor granulomatous as the name might …
