Enhancing Self-Efficacy In The Utilization Of Physical Activity Counseling: An Online Constructivist Approach With Psychologists-In-Training, Cassandra D. Pasquariello Oct 2013

Enhancing Self-Efficacy In The Utilization Of Physical Activity Counseling: An Online Constructivist Approach With Psychologists-In-Training, Cassandra D. Pasquariello

Theses and Dissertations

In our sedentary society, physical inactivity has become the biggest public health concern of the 21st century. In addition to physical health promotion, physical activity has been associated with a number of positive psychological and social outcomes. Psychologists are well positioned to provide physical activity counseling and may have ethical obligations to address physical activity with their clients. Training the next generation of psychologists about the role of physical activity and health is critical to ensure best practices in graduate education. Researchers have cited insufficient training as a barrier to integrating physical activity into clinical work, yet little is known …

Memoir On A Lds Family Of Sisters, Margaret Holsinger Manchak, Dr. Louise Plummer Oct 2013

Memoir On A Lds Family Of Sisters, Margaret Holsinger Manchak, Dr. Louise Plummer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Creative nonfiction has recently become a popular genre of serious literary merit. What exactly is it? True stories using scenes, dialogue, close, detailed descriptions and other techniques usually employed by poets and fiction writers on any subject. This gives the writer great flexibility and power, especially in the LDS context, to tell stories that have purpose and meaning beyond the experiences of the writer. These stories can strike a more universal chord. Memoir falls under the umbrella of creative nonfiction. It is a piece of autobiographical writing drawing from the past. I have undertaken to write a memoir with my …

The Saints Of Southern India, Shauntelle Rowberry-Pallett, Dr. Lance Larsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has had a presence in India for over 100 years. Yet, few people outside of India know anything about the members of the church in India. I first met the LDS church members in India in January of 1999. I was intrigued and inspired by these members who were willing to leave family, friends, religions and homes to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was inspired by this initial visit and with the assistance and encouragement of Dr. David R. Rowberry and President Neal Twitchell, a former mission …

The Marginal Utility Of Student Writing, Seth Andrew Killingbeck, Dr. Kristine Hansen Oct 2013

The Marginal Utility Of Student Writing, Seth Andrew Killingbeck, Dr. Kristine Hansen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Because of a widespread concern that students fail to genuinely comprehend the subject material they study, during the 1980s many American academics began to advocate simple British instructional tools emphasizing writing. Contemporary literature and conversations refer to these tools as Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), Writing in the Disciplines (WID), and Writing to Learn. Each of these related initiatives seeks to improve the educational quality of students by encouraging them to write more about classroom topics. Underlying pedagogical theory and empirical evidence indicate that, when implemented properly, increased student writing benefits students not only in their own comprehension, but in …

It’S A Sin To Kill A Mockingbird: The Depiction Of Law And Lawyers In Adolescent Literature, Shannon Johnson, Dr. Jesse Crisler Oct 2013

It’S A Sin To Kill A Mockingbird: The Depiction Of Law And Lawyers In Adolescent Literature, Shannon Johnson, Dr. Jesse Crisler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Until a few years ago, scholars had done little research on legal themes in fiction, especially adolescent fiction. Lately, however, interest in the relationship between law and literature has increased. Law professors are starting to use works of literature in their teaching. English professors are sponsoring courses on legal themes in literature and the rhetoric of law. But in all the excitement of these new trends, little has been said about the relationship between law and adolescent literature.

Fundamentals Of Modern Belarusian, Christian Marchant, Dr. Michael Kelly Oct 2013

Fundamentals Of Modern Belarusian, Christian Marchant, Dr. Michael Kelly

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Republic of Belarus, located in the very heart of Europe, is a relatively unknown country to many westerners. Belarus has an important role in the political future of Europe. Belarus is located in the geographic center of Europe and is a major corridor for energy transport. The country is the only dictatorship remaining in Europe, and with the recent expansion of the European Union, it will now lie directly on its eastern border. Any traveler visiting Belarus would benefit greatly from a knowledge of Belarusian, yet there is a striking absence of any material in English about the Belarusian …

Research Brief: "Investing In Vets: Strategies To Help Returning Gulf War Vets Enter The Civilian Work Force Successfully", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study found that corporate leadership, veteran-specific training, and a long-term commitment to veterans’ employment were all significant factors in diminishing barriers to veteran employment and reintegration. In practice, social workers who understand business and organizational change can be leaders in supporting veterans in the workplace, and also in advocating for positive social change for veterans and their families. For employers, increased cultural competence concerning military populations would be helpful. In policy, organizations should work on creating coalitions of corporate leaders who have the power to change policies, programs, and practices, and who will monitor the success of these policy …

Publications and Research

Background A cohort study found that 9/11‐related environmental exposures and posttraumatic stress disorder increased self‐reported cardiovascular disease risk. We attempted to replicate these findings using objectively defined cardiovascular disease hospitalizations in the same cohort. Methods and Results Data for adult World Trade Center Health Registry enrollees residing in New York State on enrollment and no cardiovascular disease history (n=46 346) were linked to a New York State hospital discharge–reporting system. Follow‐up began at Registry enrollment (2003–2004) and ended at the first cerebrovascular or heart disease (HD) hospitalization, death, or December 31, 2010, whichever was earliest. We used proportional hazards models …

Capital Cost Comparisons Between Low Impact Development (Lid) And Conventional Stormwater Management Systems In Florida, Daniel C. Penniman, Mark Hostetler, Tatiana Borisova, Glenn Acomb Oct 2013

Capital Cost Comparisons Between Low Impact Development (Lid) And Conventional Stormwater Management Systems In Florida, Daniel C. Penniman, Mark Hostetler, Tatiana Borisova, Glenn Acomb

Suburban Sustainability

Low impact development (LID), an ecologically sensitive development strategy and stormwater management (SWM) method, is beginning to be implemented in more suburban and metropolitan projects. However, construction firms that work in Florida have been relatively slow to adopt LID. One significant reason being that many professionals in the development community believe LID practices raise the cost of construction compared to conventional, “pipe and pond” methods. Our objective for this study was to determine how specific capital costs differed between LID and conventional SWM methods. We surveyed a group of LID-experienced design professionals to collect cost data from projects that were …

The Doctoral Learning Journey And Outcomes For Business Leaders And Corporate Managers, Barry Elsey Oct 2013

The Doctoral Learning Journey And Outcomes For Business Leaders And Corporate Managers, Barry Elsey

Journal of Executive Education

International education is big business in Australia and the University of South Australia (UniSA) is a leading player, particularly in the Asia Pacific region (Ciccarelli, 2007). Forced by government to generate income beyond public subsidy Australian universities have had little choice but to enter the competitive private sector marketplace offshore to attract international students. In the case of UniSA special attention has been paid to marketing offshore ‘executive’ doctoral programs for those in leadership roles in business and corporate affairs. These business and corporate leaders drawn to these doctoral programs is the subject of this paper.

Supporting Digital Video Composition In The Library: A New Opportunity For Instruction, Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes

Library Faculty Research and Publications

Digital technologies are transforming curriculum at a rapid pace as more faculty integrate digital media into student assignments. Faculty may be assigning video composition and other digital media, but how much do students really know about integrating media? Intellectual property? Visual literacy? Librarians have the opportunity to facilitate an intelligent and integrated move toward the use of these digital tools in classrooms and participate in educating students on media literacy. This presentation explores the information and media literacy considerations in multimodal projects, and will highlight how librarians can use sites such as Flickr, YouTube, Sound Cloud and Google Image Search …

Immigrant Women And Their Health: An Olive Paper, Afaf Ibrahim Meleis, Juliene G. Lipson, Marjorie A. Muecke, Gloria R. Smith

Sigma Publications: Book Excerpts

Migration and population relocation are part of human history. However, recent national and international issues create a need to pay more attention to immigration and its effects on immigrants and the societies in which immigrants resettle. Women constitute about 80% of the world's total of immigrants and refugees. Women immigrants are less visible than are men immigrants. They often receive less health care and care of inferior quality; and they have received less scholarly attention. As a result their health may be compromised.

The overall goal of this paper, which we are calling an olive paper:

  1. is to raise nurses' …

Protecting The Civil Rights Of English Language Learners Today: A Study Of The Recent Doj And Ocr Investigations Of Selected School Districts In The United States, Omobola Oyeleye

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of the study was to examine the circumstances and practices that led to OCR and DOJ investigations in seven selected school districts, and to determine the emerging themes from the details of the settlement agreements between the school districts and the United States. The themes developed through this study were aimed at providing a framework for school officials all across the nation, assisting them to examine their practices and align the practices with the results of the recent investigations and settlement agreements.

Representing the intermingling of the field of law and education, the study addressed the question: What …
