Pain Assessment In Pediatric Post-Tonsillectomy Patients, Tamara Baird, Dr. Renea L. Beckstrand Oct 2013

Pain Assessment In Pediatric Post-Tonsillectomy Patients, Tamara Baird, Dr. Renea L. Beckstrand

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A nurse’s obligation to manage pain and relieve patients’ suffering is an integral part of the commitment to patient care. Adequate pain assessment and management benefits the patient by shortening the hospital stay, speeding recovery, reducing costs, and promoting physical activity. Specific populations who may have difficulty communicating their pain require special attention, especially children. Although many effective techniques are available for pain management in children, studies indicate that their pain is managed less well than pain in adults (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 1992).

An Approach To Automatic Spoken Language Identification Using Analogical Modeling, Nicholas A. Stetich, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale Oct 2013

An Approach To Automatic Spoken Language Identification Using Analogical Modeling, Nicholas A. Stetich, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Although it is often repeated, perhaps to the point of becoming cliché, we live in an age of information. Information is readily available, and in a variety of formats, especially electronic formats. Our ability to digitize data, or make it available for computer access, has increased dramatically over the last several decades, due to the exponential growth of computers’ processing power and storage capabilities. However, much of this data is unorganized, and exists in many formats (text, audio, video), and in many different languages. Expert linguists can often identify what language is being spoken in a particular piece of audio …

Anglicisms In Buenos Aires Spanish, C. Cecilia Tocaimaza-Hatch, Dr. Robert Smead Oct 2013

Anglicisms In Buenos Aires Spanish, C. Cecilia Tocaimaza-Hatch, Dr. Robert Smead

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina, has distinguished itself from the rest of the Argentine cities by being the site of foreign influences throughout its history as an immigrants’ city. In particular, the presence of an English influence in Buenos Aires is well established, but has been historically a strictly British English influence due to immigration from Great Britain and subsequent economic and political involvement taking place in the 19th century. For that reason, anglicisms in Argentine Spanish have in the past been mostly remnants of British influence.

Beginners Welsh Language Program, Emily Stout, Dr. Ronald Dennis Oct 2013

Beginners Welsh Language Program, Emily Stout, Dr. Ronald Dennis

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my project was to help create a website which could aid people in learning the Welsh language. Language resources for Welsh are difficult to find in most places, and generally restricted to a book and tape set. These sets have some positive effect, but learning the language would be facilitated by the use of videos. My initial role in the project was to videotape fluent Welsh speakers, mostly native speakers, speaking in Welsh. In order to do this, I traveled to Wales and enrolled in an eight-week intensive Welsh course in Lampeter, in South Wales. This was …

The Value To Foreign Companies To List On Us Stock Markets, Jaron H. Wilde, Dr. Erv Black, Peter Johnson Oct 2013

The Value To Foreign Companies To List On Us Stock Markets, Jaron H. Wilde, Dr. Erv Black, Peter Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

US Stock markets are stable, highly liquid, and wealthy. To benefit from the resources these markets potentially provide many domestic and foreign companies seek to be listed on a US stock exchange. All companies wishing to list must first register with the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), which regulates listed companies to protect investors and creditors. The SEC requires companies to produce financial statements that demonstrate their financial health and status. These financial statements must meet standards established in US GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Independent auditors audit the statements and attest whether they comply with GAAP.

Bridging The Cultural And Educational Gap Between Humanitarian Groups, Researchers, And The Ghanaian People, Aaron Yates, Dr. Beverly B. Zimmerman Oct 2013

Bridging The Cultural And Educational Gap Between Humanitarian Groups, Researchers, And The Ghanaian People, Aaron Yates, Dr. Beverly B. Zimmerman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the summer of 2002 I did quantitative research with the HART organization (Humanitarian Aid Relief Team) in Ghana on the spread of Buruli Ulcer (BU). I found that there were cultural barriers that prevented the Ghanaian people from understanding Western concepts of medicine and receiving needed treatment. I have done further qualitative research this year in order to develop a mutual understanding that will help bridge the cultural and educational gap between foreign humanitarian groups (such as HART) and the Ghanaian people. During our research trip to Ghana we found a high incidence of Buruli Ulcer in the village …

Calibrating The Human Instrument: Understanding The Interviewing Experience Of Novice Qualitative Researchers, Margarita S. Peredaryenko, Steven Eric Krauss Oct 2013

Calibrating The Human Instrument: Understanding The Interviewing Experience Of Novice Qualitative Researchers, Margarita S. Peredaryenko, Steven Eric Krauss

The Qualitative Report

Scientific instruments often undergo calibration to ensure that they will produce results that meet or exceed defined criteria within a specified degree of confidence. Such calibration almost always refers to mechanical instruments, those used primarily in the physical sciences. Rarely is the notion of calibration used in relation to the social and human sciences, especially in the context of qualitative research where the human being is the main research instrument. The focus of this study was to explore the experiences of novice human instruments undergoing a process similar to that of calibration. In doing so, we studied how novice qualitative …

Short- And Long-Term Associations Between Widowhood And Mortality In The United States: Longitudinal Analyses, J. Robin Moon, M. Maria Glamour, Anusha M. Vable, Sze Yan Liu, S.V. Subramanian Oct 2013

Short- And Long-Term Associations Between Widowhood And Mortality In The United States: Longitudinal Analyses, J. Robin Moon, M. Maria Glamour, Anusha M. Vable, Sze Yan Liu, S.V. Subramanian

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Background

Past research shows that spousal death results in elevated mortality risk for the surviving spouse. However, most prior studies have inadequately controlled for socioeconomic status (SES), and it is unclear whether this ‘widowhood effect’ persists over time.

Methods

Health and Retirement Study participants aged 50+ years and married in 1998 (n = 12 316) were followed through 2008 for widowhood status and mortality (2912 deaths). Discrete-time survival analysis was used to compare mortality for the widowed versus the married.

Results

Odds of mortality during the first 3 months post-widowhood were significantly higher than in the continuously married (odds ratio …

"'Jackin’ For Beats'": Djing For Citation Critique, Todd Craig Oct 2013

"'Jackin’ For Beats'": Djing For Citation Critique, Todd Craig

Publications and Research

A challenge in teaching English composition is helping students envision plagiarism as “borrowing” – showing love to author(s) and/or text(s) that further their argument(s), versus “stealing” – biting someone’s style and words. Alastair Pennycook (1996) and Sarah Wakefield (2006) have contributed pieces to the elaborate plagiarism/citation puzzle, while Houston Baker situated the hip-hop DJ in seminal text Black Studies, Rap and the Academy (1993). Merging these moments introduces critical questions: Did Diddy invent “the remix” or become the illest beat-biter ever? How did DJ/Producers Pete Rock and Large Professor pay homage to previous musical genres to further hip-hop remix production …

Structure–Activity Relationships And Molecular Modeling Of Sphingosine Kinase Inhibitors, Dong Jae Baek, Neil Macritchie, Nahoum G. Anthony, Simon P. Mackay, Susan Pyne, Nigel J. Pyne, Robert Bittman

Publications and Research

The design, synthesis, and evaluation of the potency of new isoform-selective inhibitors of sphingosine kinases 1 and 2 (SK1 and SK2), the enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of d-erythro-sphingosine to produce the key signaling lipid, sphingosine 1-phosphate, are described. Recently, we reported that 1-(4-octylphenethyl)piperidin-4-ol (RB-005) is a selective inhibitor of SK1. Here we report the synthesis of 43 new analogues of RB-005, in which the lipophilic tail, polar headgroup, and linker region were modified to extend the structure–activity relationship profile for this lead compound, which we explain using modeling studies with the recently published crystal structure of SK1. We provide …

An Apparent Angular Unconformity In Western Connecticut, Stanley Schleifer, Nazrul I. Khandaker, Adisa Charles, Hernando Martinez, Shirley Jackson, Chiemeka Ihebom

Publications and Research

The recent extension, to the north, of the U. S. Route 7 ‘superhighway’ in the town of Brookfield, Connecticut has involved the excavation of crystalline bedrock of lower Paleozoic to upper Proterozoic age in the area. The road cuts produced by this excavation have exposed some interesting features of structure and lithology. An outcrop, observed by the authors off the east side of route 7, at grid coordinates 41.482444 N, 73.415307 W is of particular interest. It appears, to the casual observer to be an angular unconformity. Maps and publications regarding this area of Western Connecticut support the likelihood of …

Interview With Loretta Lizama, Loretta Lizama, California State University, Monterey Bay

Chinatown Renewal Project

Loretta Lizama was born in 1934 and raised in Salinas, California. Her parents were both immigrants from the Philippines who came to America to pursue a college education. After Loretta was born her parents left their collegiate pursuits behind and entered into the agriculture business. Stanley Rigunay, Loretta's father, worked as a labor contractor in Watsonville. The "Rigunay's camp” was a source of rich memories, which Loretta shares throughout the interview. Among the most prominent of these memories were the cockfights, the diversity of the labor force, and her parents' strong work ethic. Loretta’s memories her father's involvement in the …

World Series, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 2013

World Series, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As the baseball season reaches its final few games in this rendition of the World Series, I find myself revisiting some tired but nagging issues including the dreaded Designated Hitter (DH) debate and the hypocritically laced PED controversy. This is not to detract from the excitement of watching two of the most enduring franchises in the game and two of the most successful teams of this new century.
