Methyl Halide Production By Calcareous Periphyton Mats From The Florida Everglades, Ann Eileen Raffel Oct 2013

Methyl Halide Production By Calcareous Periphyton Mats From The Florida Everglades, Ann Eileen Raffel

Dissertations and Theses

Methyl halides are trace gases with both natural and anthropogenic origins. Once generated, these gases transport chlorine and bromine into the stratosphere, where they play an important role in ozone depleting catalytic cycles. The Florida Everglades is one location where methyl halide emissions have been proposed to be elevated due to high primary production and ionic halogens. This region also provides a unique study environment due to salt water intrusions, which occur during storm or low marsh water level-high tide events. The purpose of this research was twofold. First, quantification of methyl chloride (CH3Cl) and methyl bromide (CH …

Audio Sampling Of The Aymara Language, Aaron M. Waldrip, Dr. Cynthia Hallen Oct 2013

Audio Sampling Of The Aymara Language, Aaron M. Waldrip, Dr. Cynthia Hallen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Upon arriving in the city I couldn’t help but notice the barrenness of my surroundings. Sitting at approximately 12,500 feet above sea level, the city of El Alto in La Paz, Bolivia leaves a distinct impression upon your eyes, nose, and particularly your lungs. Your eyes see nothing but multifaceted shades of brown, your nose perceives smells that will never leave your memory, and your lungs scream so loudly for oxygen that you dare not walk too quickly, let alone run. However, a couple of draughts of mate de coca later, and your body seems to right itself.

Insider Trading In Taiwan, Gabby Hsin-Yo Wang, Dr. Michael J. Pinegar Oct 2013

Insider Trading In Taiwan, Gabby Hsin-Yo Wang, Dr. Michael J. Pinegar

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Insider trading has been a much-rumored phenomenon in Taiwan. In a newspaper article headlined Bitter Fruit of Stock Investment, the author states, “…Taiwan has a stock market culture which is — on the surface at least — quite egalitarian in its nature. Insider trading? Everyone is doing it.” Ironically, very little government action has been taken to track down insider traders, and the academia has been reluctant to search for evidence of insider trading in Taiwan in fear that such a sensitive research would result in serious ramifications.

Carmen De Bello Actiaco (Pherc 817): The Illumination Of A Two Thousand Year-Old Papyrus With A 21st Century Eureka, Stewart Tanner, Dr. Roger Macfarlane

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The days when scholars of the Classics refuted the ability of technology to contribute to their discipline are a memory of the past. From archaeology to papyrology the study of the Ancients through the lens of tomorrow advances daily. Such was my experience with the revolutionary breakthrough of multi-spectral imaging (MSI) on a remnant from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D.: A charred, millennia-old piece of papyrus (PHerc 817) from Herculaneum, Italy treating the famous Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. From Provo to Palo Alto, from Naples to Oxford, the ORCA Grant provided me with the necessary …

Patients’ Perceptions Of Mechanical Ventilation: What Hurt And What Helped?, Lisa M. Ewert, Dr. Renea Beckstrand

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When a patient is on a ventilator, it’s the critical care nurse’s role to recognize and respond to any factors that cause the patient distress. Anytime a patient is ill, the illness causes both physiological and emotional stress. However, an acute illness that is severe enough to require mechanical ventilation intensifies the physical and psychological distress with which the patient and their family must cope (1).
