Surface- And Hydrogel-Mediated Delivery Of Nucleic Acid Nanoparticles, Angela K. Pannier, Tatiana Segura Jan 2013

Surface- And Hydrogel-Mediated Delivery Of Nucleic Acid Nanoparticles, Angela K. Pannier, Tatiana Segura

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Gene expression within a cell population can be directly altered through gene delivery approaches. Traditionally for nonviral delivery, plasmids or siRNA molecules, encoding or targeting the gene of interest, are packaged within nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are then delivered to the media surrounding cells seeded onto tissue culture plastic; this technique is termed bolus delivery. Although bolus delivery is widely utilized to screen for efficient delivery vehicles and to study gene function in vitro, this delivery strategy may not result in efficient gene transfer for all cell types or may not identify those delivery vehicles that will be efficient in vivo. …

The Cultural Discontinuity Hypothesis: An Appalachian American Perspective In Eastern Kentucky, Timothy W. Conner Ii Jan 2013

The Cultural Discontinuity Hypothesis: An Appalachian American Perspective In Eastern Kentucky, Timothy W. Conner Ii

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

K.M. Tyler et al. (2008) propose a quantitative method to measure differences between school and home experiences had by students of ethnic minority status and how such differences (cultural discontinuity) may affect psychological factors related to student achievement. Although study of cultural discontinuity has been applied to understanding African American, Asian American, Latino American, and Native American student populations, little attention has been given to the ways in which cultural discontinuity may manifest in the Appalachian American population. This study conceptualizes the socio-cultural conditions that would warrant such an investigation, establishing evidence from ten interview subjects of the presence of …

Zadoff On Kwall: A Historian’S Critique, Ethan Zadoff Jan 2013

Zadoff On Kwall: A Historian’S Critique, Ethan Zadoff

Cardozo Law Review de•novo

The relationship between law and culture is a complex, dynamic, variegated, and multifaceted accord, an entanglement that belies the traditional dynamic of categorical distinction that, many posit, lies at the center of the two amorphous terms. Increasingly over the last decade and a half, scholars, particularly legal scholars, have started to reconsider the complexities of the legal in social and cultural environs, partially as a result of interdisciplinary methods of cultural theory, which have permeated the guarded borders of legal studies. Roberta Kwall’s article titled “The Cultural Analysis Paradigm: Women and Synagogue Ritual as a Case Study” in the December …

Recovering From The Recovery Narrative: On Glocalism, Green Jobs And Cyborg Civilization, Michael Burger Jan 2013

Recovering From The Recovery Narrative: On Glocalism, Green Jobs And Cyborg Civilization, Michael Burger

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

In this Essay, I make a preliminary foray into new narrative terrain, identifying several emerging legal storylines that have arisen in the wake of climate change disruptions and that I predict will prove influential in the coming years. In Part I, I discuss the ways in which new perceptions of scale are re-defining human beings' attachments to a sense of "place" or "dwelling" and are shaping new attitudes about what constitutes the local, posing potential problems for existing federalism schemes. In Part II, I discuss the ways in which America's long history of nationalizing nature manifests in the discourse surrounding …

Gender And The African Burial Ground, Ashley Parks Jan 2013

Gender And The African Burial Ground, Ashley Parks

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an examination of the African Burial Ground in New York. In the analysis I consider burials that were associated with items of adornment and shells, coins, and other items in the time periods from the 1760s to 1794. Through the application of queer theory within a Black feminist archaeological framework, I hope to open up new understandings of gender during this time period. The analysis focuses on the gendered aspects of burial good associations as well as how two burials, Burials 259 and 332, challenge the conflation of sex and gender in archaeology, as well as the …

Learning Context Matters: Communication Strategy Development Through Spanish Interaction, Sonya Hildebrand Jan 2013

Learning Context Matters: Communication Strategy Development Through Spanish Interaction, Sonya Hildebrand

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

University studies in the Spanish language are often times confined to the classroom. However, more and more programs have been implementing civic engagement in the Hispanic community into the curriculum to create a service-learning experience. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of service-learning in enhancing communication techniques. Twenty undergraduate students at the University of Kentucky were surveyed at the onset and the conclusion of one semester while simultaneously serving the Hispanic community. The students, on average, increased the frequency of communication techniques after a semester of service-learning. Students who participate in a service-learning program often times see a result …

Deleuzian Mappings With Rafael Chirbe's "Little Machines", Daniel O'Dunne

Wayne State University Dissertations

Spanish (Valencian) novelist Rafael Chirbes, and how this narrative production coincides with several of the philosophical concepts of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari included in works that they co-authored or in those written individually by Deleuze. The novels considered in this study are La larga marcha (1996), La caída de Madrid (2000) and Los viejos amigos (2003). The chronological period depicted in the trilogy is restricted for the most part to the years immediately preceding the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and extending until the beginning of the Twenty-First Century. Portraying the intensive time of aion, or time that escapes chronological …

Impacts Of Oral Language Proficiency, Television And Internet On Acculturation Of Taiwanese College Students, Huang Yu Lin Jan 2013

Impacts Of Oral Language Proficiency, Television And Internet On Acculturation Of Taiwanese College Students, Huang Yu Lin

Wayne State University Dissertations

The majority of recent cross-cultural research with regard to the media's impact on acculturation has been aimed at Chinese immigrants' acculturation by the media in the United States with relatively little attention to Taiwanese college students' state of change in acculturation by various media sources while acquiring English as a second language. There are significant numbers of studies on assimilation to the host culture by both the ethnic and host media; however, there is a paucity of literature based on the one-dimensional media impact on a particular demographic group which can be easily traced to various types of media affecting …

It also analyzes the image of the Latina as an ideal mother of both her native and host country.

Ethical Leadership: Need For Cross-Cultural Examinations, Shuo Tian Jan 2013

Ethical Leadership: Need For Cross-Cultural Examinations, Shuo Tian

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This study examined the difference in perceptions among college students on ethical leadership. Ethical leadership has become an increasingly important business issue as corruptions and scandals grow in the 21st century. Unethical leadership has been known to cause major embarrassment for institutions from government to business, and is not a well-researched area among leadership researchers. The procedure included creating an online survey based on the GLOBE study, which examined the Character/Integrity, Altruism, Collective Motivation, and Encouragement aspects of ethical leadership. This online survey was than assessed to students from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Students were recruited from a large …

A Person's A Person: Children's Rights In Children's Literature, Jonathan Todres, Sarah Higinbotham Jan 2013

A Person's A Person: Children's Rights In Children's Literature, Jonathan Todres, Sarah Higinbotham

Faculty Publications By Year

Although the Convention on the Rights of the Child is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history, children’s rights are still seen in many circles as novel and quaint ideas but not serious legal theory. The reality, however, is that the realization of children’s rights is vital not only for childhood but for individuals’ entire lives. Similarly, although the books children read and have read to them are a central part of their childhood experience, so too has children’s literature been ignored as a rights-bearing discourse and a means of civic socialization. We argue that children’s literature, like …

Teaching Research Methodologies To Professionally Oriented Honors Students, Julie Levinson, Richard Mandel Jan 2013

Teaching Research Methodologies To Professionally Oriented Honors Students, Julie Levinson, Richard Mandel

Honors in Practice Online Archive

The benefits of encouraging undergraduate students to pursue independent research have been well documented (Craney; Guterman; Hathaway et al.; Ishiyama; Kremer and Bringle; Volkwein and Carbone). Introducing students to research processes and protocols is always a challenge, particularly for students enrolled in professionally oriented, discipline-specific colleges: so called “specialty schools.” In these colleges, preparing students to do high-level research is complicated by the nature and priorities of the students as well as by the particularities of the curriculum, which is invariably more restricted in scope than that of a conventional liberal arts college. Undergraduate specialty school students tend to be …

Making Something Out Of Nothing: Asexuality And Narrative, Elizabeth Hanna Hanson Jan 2013

Making Something Out Of Nothing: Asexuality And Narrative, Elizabeth Hanna Hanson

Dissertations

The existence of asexuality, the non-experience of sexual attraction, forces us to reconsider a great deal of received wisdom about sexuality, subjectivity, and narrative, which are all closely bound together in modernity. These discourses, whose interactions we find in distilled form in the novel, have both necessitated and facilitated asexual erasure. I read asexuality as a threatening absence or stasis jamming the economy of desire that operates between subjects or propels a narrative forward. Grounding my study of asexuality in narrative theory and queer theory, I explore narratives that confront asexuality at the level of content--its manifestations, misrecognitions, and repudiations …

Alternative Food Systems At Ground Level: The Fairbanks Community Garden, Alison M. Meadow Jan 2013

Alternative Food Systems At Ground Level: The Fairbanks Community Garden, Alison M. Meadow

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Alternative food system initiatives are often advocated as ways to meet goals of food security, environmental security, and community well-being. This paper presents data on one form of alternative food system initiative, a community garden, specifically regarding current and potential contributions to food security and social integration. Related to these goals, the most successful aspects of the community garden are provision of space and equipment to people who lacked these resources, as well as the creation of opportunities for a diverse cross-section of the community to develop personal relationships.

Narratives Of Mass Violence: The Role Of Memory And Memorialization In Addressing Human Rights Violations In Post-Conflict Rwanda And Uganda, Carla De Yeaza, Nicole Fox Jan 2013

Narratives Of Mass Violence: The Role Of Memory And Memorialization In Addressing Human Rights Violations In Post-Conflict Rwanda And Uganda, Carla De Yeaza, Nicole Fox

Societies Without Borders

This paper explores the question of what do Rwandans and Ugandans working on memorialization initiatives deem important when discussing the role of individual and collective memory in the aftermath of mass violence and human rights violations. Social scientists and human rights scholars have asserted the importance of memory in both reconciliation and healing after mass violence. However, it is difficult to determine the most appropriate way to facilitate reconciliation between groups who previously raped, stole from or killed one another, as there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. While policies cannot remedy the murder of one’s family, scholars, activists and practitioners argue …

La Gran Aldea De Lucio Vicente López Como Crítica De La Argentina De 1880, Vicente Gomis-Izquierdo Jan 2013

La Gran Aldea De Lucio Vicente López Como Crítica De La Argentina De 1880, Vicente Gomis-Izquierdo

The Coastal Review

This paper analyzes the relationship that La gran aldea (1884) proposes between the lower-middle classes and the Argentinean process of modernization in order to criticize the lack of progress due to socio-economic factors. The author, a member of the Generation of 1880, shows this criticism in the text in aspects such as education, the mix of social classes, family disintegration, the contrast between Buenos Aires in 1862 and 1882, immigration and the deficient role that the upper classes played in the development of a strong national industry and economy.

Lispector Y Valenzuela: Hacia Una Poética Del Devenir, Fatima R. Nogueira Jan 2013

Lispector Y Valenzuela: Hacia Una Poética Del Devenir, Fatima R. Nogueira

The Coastal Review

Considering the metaliterary focalization as well as the importance of sensible and sensorial traits in the novels El gato eficaz by Luisa Valenzuela and Un soplo de vida by Clarice Lispector this study proposes the realization of a becoming poetics in both literary works, in the sense that Deleuze and Guattari have developed the theory of becoming. Such an aesthetic is based mainly on two significant factors: first, the transformation of the subject in a virtual entity; secondly, the conversion of the discourse into a modality of becoming guided by a proliferation of voices, planes and fictions.

The Birth Of Mass Media: Printmaking In Early Modern Europe, Alison Stewart Jan 2013

The Birth Of Mass Media: Printmaking In Early Modern Europe, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

In the digital age, when images and films can be streamed with lightning speed onto computers at the press of a button, it is hard to fathom the society-altering impact the new printed image had when it first appeared in Europe around 1400. The introduction of printed images or repeatable pictorial statements irrevocably changed the practice of manually producing images one by one, by making them available in identical form, as multiple examples printed onto paper, a material that was newly available in Europe. Such multiples appeared first as independent images, then as book illustrations, but either way, this process …

Stalin’S Boots And The March Of History (Post-Communist Memories), Roland K. Végső Jan 2013

Stalin’S Boots And The March Of History (Post-Communist Memories), Roland K. Végső

Department of English: Faculty Publications

I would like to propose here is precisely the invention of a relation to history and the public sphere of sociality that deconstructs the trauma/nostalgia opposition. The theoretical goal is to separate concrete narrative forms from actual political contents. It follows from the previous point that it might be possible to conceive of historical moments or concrete rhetorical situations in which we need to rely on nostalgic rather than traumatic narratives in order to imagine progressive political change. In these situations, the political task could be the development of a certain “critical nostalgia” that does not try to replace trauma …

Becoming-Belieber: Girls' Passionate Encounters With Bieber Culture, Kortney Sherbine Jan 2013

Becoming-Belieber: Girls' Passionate Encounters With Bieber Culture, Kortney Sherbine

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

In this article, I draw on French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s (1987) notion of becoming to consider the ways in which these encounters with people, materials, and technologies are productive, creating space for Beliebers to come into relationship with one another and with popular culture in ways that are new and that I never could have anticipated during my more carefully organized and school-curriculum-driven interactions with girls during my six years as an elementary school teacher. Through my current research into young girls’ after-school fanaticism, I have been able to come to know girls differently than I knew …

Power Girls Before Girl Power: 1980s Toy-Based Girl Cartoons, Katia Perea

Publications and Research

The socio/cultural history and partnership of toy advertisement and children’s television is rich and well documented (Schneider 1989, Kunkel 1988, Seiter 1993). In this article I discuss the influence of policy in girl’s cartoon programming as well as the relationship between commercialization and financial motivation in creating a girl cartoon media product. I then discuss the formulaic, gender normative parameters this new genre set in place to identify girl cartoons as well as girl media consumption and how within those parameters girl cartoon characters were able to represent an empowered girl popular culture product a decade before the nomenclature Girl …

Placing My Bets On Youtube Futures (For New Media Writing And Publishing), Alexandra Juhasz Jan 2013

Placing My Bets On Youtube Futures (For New Media Writing And Publishing), Alexandra Juhasz

Publications and Research

The work of media scholar, artist, and activist Alexandra Juhasz directly addresses many of the concerns that Lovink and Rossiter raise in the previous two chapters. In this chapter, Juhasz repurposes blog posts about her undergraduate media studies course and “video-book” Learning from YouTube to consider the future of new media scholarship: how academics might write and publish about and in new media. By moving her writing from screen to page, the chapter itself enacts the concerns of circulation, vernacular, standards, and publication at the heart of new media studies projects and the work of writing about them. Juhasz demonstrates …
