Stars In Their Eyes: The Dominance Of The Celebrity Brand And Intellectual Property Norms Protection Through Fan Goodwill, Naeha Prakash
Stars In Their Eyes: The Dominance Of The Celebrity Brand And Intellectual Property Norms Protection Through Fan Goodwill, Naeha Prakash
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
The widespread celebrity culture in today's society has signaled a shift from celebrity product endorsers to celebrity brands. Right of publicity and trademark laws leave a gap that does not adequately protect a brand as a whole. Rather, these laws make a distinction between the celebrity identity and the product, limiting protection of a brand that includes both components. Social norms found in the interaction between celebrities and fans can provide an alternate form of protection that reinforces ownership rights found in pure intellectual property. This article argues that a celebrity brand should foster fan goodwill to build a brand …

The Ogbanje In Little Bee By Chris Cleave, Courtney A. Harler
The Ogbanje In Little Bee By Chris Cleave, Courtney A. Harler
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"In Chris Cleave's 2008 novel Little Bee, he offers readers a literary representation of the Nigerian spirit-child for the purpose of political and post-colonial examination. Cleave's intentions are revealed through a full study of this traditional Nigerian concept. The Nigerian spirit-child, known as the ogbanje in the lgbo language and the abiku in the Yoruba language of Western Nigeria, is imprisoned in an endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The concept of the ogbanje-abiku is indeed related to the overall concept of reincarnation, but it differs in the sense that the child who is unduly linked to the spirit …
We Are Always Already Imprisoned: Hyper-Incarceration And Black Male Identity Performance, Frank Rudy Cooper
We Are Always Already Imprisoned: Hyper-Incarceration And Black Male Identity Performance, Frank Rudy Cooper
Scholarly Works
In this Essay, Professor Frank Rudy Cooper recenters the experiences of men of color, particularly those of black men, in light of Reagan's War on Drugs and recent scholarship illustrating the over-representation of men of color in prison for petty drug use. The mainstream's depiction of black men as always already imprisoned disciplines us into the never-finished quest to prove we are a "Good Black Man," rather than a "Bad Black Man." In order to propose greater empathy for black men's imprisonment, this article proceeds in the following manner. In Part I, Professor Cooper sets the stage for considering the …

Generational Perspective Of Higher Education Online Student Learning Styles, Chad James Williams
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The purpose of this study was to determine whether students associated with a generational group exhibit similar learning styles as identified by the Felder and Soloman Index of Learning Styles instrument. The secondary purpose was to determine to what degree these generational groups rate their satisfaction with online education through the use of the Distance Education Learning Environment Survey (DELES) instrument. The instruments were administered to Montana University System students who were enrolled in one or more fully online courses. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square, and ANOVA. The collected data of 1426 (n) from a total surveyed …
A Critical Feminist Science Studies Critique Of The Term 'Pseudoscience', Zoe Lewycky
A Critical Feminist Science Studies Critique Of The Term 'Pseudoscience', Zoe Lewycky
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Using a Critical Feminist Science Studies perspective, I examine how the term 'pseudoscience’ rewrites science’s history, preventing science from being held accountable for its power structures and hierarchical narratives. I first examine the historical and cultural origins of science, the figure of the scientist, and 'objectivity.' Then, I explore science's obsession with the body in the many works and theories that have been developed since its origination in the seventeenth century. Finally, I apply critical feminist science studies to Michael Shermer's usage of the word 'pseudoscience' in his book, Why People Believe Weird Things. My proposed solution is that we …
Comparisons Of Cultural Identities In Relation To Poverty, Amanda A. Corea
Comparisons Of Cultural Identities In Relation To Poverty, Amanda A. Corea
Honors Theses
This research focuses on how one's cultural identity relates to their attitudes towards those in poverty and what they attribute to be the causes of poverty. Correlation and difference tests were run on data collected from questionnaires completed by a convenient sample. Beliefs about poverty and patterns of attitudes demonstrated in various culture groups were analyzed. The hypothesis that cultural identity relates to attributions and attitudes toward poverty based on learned cultural attitudes was partially supported. Significant differences were found between different cultural identity groups for both attributions and attitudes.

Only Part Of The Picture: A Response To Professor Tushnet's Worth A Thousand Words, Zahr Kassim Said
Only Part Of The Picture: A Response To Professor Tushnet's Worth A Thousand Words, Zahr Kassim Said
Articles
Professor Rebecca Tushnet’s recent article Worth a Thousand Words: The Image of Copyright elucidates a number of difficulties in copyright that flow from judicial failures to treat images consistently and rigorously. She argues that courts both assess copyrightability and evaluate potential infringement in ways that rely on a naïve understanding of the way artists create, and indeed, the way viewers receive works of art. The problem is particularly pronounced with respect to what Tushnet calls non-textual works because copyright law’s default to textuality means that the tools and methods that judges use misalign with the objects of their examination.

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Explanations for Unemployment have been studied through a 20-item scale created by Furnham (1982) on three theoretical dimensions: the individualistic, the societal, and the fatalistic. In this study we revised this scale to co-ordinate it with contemporary social and economic facts and through metric testing-adjustments and multivariate statistical analysis we arrived at a 19-item scale retaining eight of the original scale items. This revised scale was statistically and theoretically valid as its factor structure closely resembled the original factor structure Furnham had described. For the second stage of the study, data were collected from eight countries and multilevel covariance structure …

Does Tolerance Reflect A More Inclusive Self-Construal? A Comparison Of Poland, East And West Germany, Maja K. Schachner, Toby Robertson, Fons Van De Vijver, Friedrich Funke, Dorota Brzezinska
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Past research suggests that Poland and Germany differ in the inclusiveness of their “moral universe”, i.e. the breadth of the community to which people apply moral values and rules of fairness (Schwartz, 2007). It seems likely that this difference is reflected in a more or less inclusive definition of one’s ingroup. The present study investigated (1) whether there are indeed differences in ingroup inclusiveness as manifested in differential construals of the self in East and West Germany and Poland and (2) whether those differences are reflected in differences in tolerance. As expected, participants in West Germany had the most inclusive …
Ensuring Rigor In Qualitative Research Within The Field Of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Carolin Demuth
Ensuring Rigor In Qualitative Research Within The Field Of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Carolin Demuth
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Within recent years, there has been an increasing call for qualitative research in cross-cultural psychology. Despite this general openness, there seems to be some confusion about how to evaluate the quality of such research. This has been partly due to the heterogeneity of the field and the epistemological underpinnings of qualitative research that do not allow for standard criteria of rigor as in the traditional psychological research. Nevertheless, there is an emerging canon of recognized standards of good practice in qualitative research which the present paper will briefly discuss. The paper aims at motivating cross-cultural psychologists to produce high quality …

Situational Analysis From Two Studies Facilitating The Development Of A Psycho- Cultural Rehabilitation Program For Children Affected By The 12 May 2008 Earthquake In Sichuan, China, Shuguang Wang, Daphne Keats, Melissa Gao, S. Zhang, Xian Gui Yang, S. Chai
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
The data presented are from two field studies: (1) a survey of 2234 current children’s caregivers; and (2) interviews with 1200 children, evaluating the children’s social, psychological and behavioural situation after the devastating Sichuan earthquake in the hard-hit Qiang ethnic community. Insights from the findings will be used to develop an evidence-based, culturally appropriate approach on the best use of cultural resources to facilitate the children’s post-disaster rehabilitation. Evidence from the first study indicated that the disaster had a significant impact on the ethnic Qiang children and their families in regard to personal loss, physical injury, social relationships and psychological …

The Background To The Research: Cultural, Theoretical And Methodological Issues, Daphne Keats, Shuguang Wang
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
The disastrous earthquake of 12 May, 2008 had its greatest impact on the Qiang people, an ethnic minority living in the mountainous regions of Sichuan at the earthquake’s epicentre. Over 80,000 people died, over a million were injured or missing, most buildings collapsed and most homes were demolished under the avalanches. Thousands of children were evacuated to safety, some moved to far distant locations. The research team from the University of Newcastle responded to the plea of the Qiang leaders to help the children. In cooperation with the China-Australia Centre for Cross-Cultural Studies, a three stage psycho-cultural research program was …

The End Of Men Or The Rebirth Of Class?, June Carbone, Naomi Cahn
The End Of Men Or The Rebirth Of Class?, June Carbone, Naomi Cahn
Articles
This article argues that much of what has been described as “the end of men” is in fact the recreation of class. Greater inequality among men and among women has resurrected class differences and changed the way men and women relate to each other and channel resources to their children. While women have in fact gained ground in the workplace and acquired greater ability to live, work, play and raise children without men, a mere relative move towards sex equality only masks the more fundamental changes occurring in American society and the continuing existence of patriarchy. First, the improved freedom …

Same Fight, Different Player: An Insight Into Culture, Information Sharing, And Team Performance, Cecily Mccoy-Fisher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the relations among culture, information sharing, and performance among culturally-homogeneous NATO Officer teams. Forty-eight teams participated from five countries, namely, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and USA. Teams of four participants were randomly assigned to a role and the task was an interdependent computer-based mission using an adapted version of Neverwinter Nights™ (Bioware, 2003), where they had to communicate among teammates and with non-human players to find weapons caches and other mission objectives. Not one individual had all of the information needed to perform the tasks; thus, they needed to share information with …

Facilitating Transfer For Adult Learners Through Cross-Cultural E-Learning, Min Zhang
Facilitating Transfer For Adult Learners Through Cross-Cultural E-Learning, Min Zhang
Graduate Research Papers
Benefiting from globalization and technology advancement, e-leaming is increasingly being used by work organizations for improving the skills of knowledge workers. However, most workplace e-leaming is too theoretical to impact on-the-job and ultimately fails to serve the organizations' quest for success. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the variables that affect transfer of learning, and to provide feasible strategies to enhance transfer of learning for international adult learners in cross-cultural online learning environments. By conducting a critical review of purposefully selected peer reviewed journal articles, this review highlights the relationship between cultural differences and learning style preferences …

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
This unit was created to be taught using the TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) approach and traditional methods. The textbook used with this unit is Exprésate 3, specifically Chapter 9. This UbD unit was written for an ABc schedule (90/90/45) with the goal of students becoming more confident with their use of advanced Spanish and understanding the importance of storytelling. It should be noted that while “Days” are written in the unit they should function more as a guide. The sequence is significantly more important than the schedule.

This unit addresses all five categories of National Standards in Foreign Language Education (Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities), and features a variety of cooperative and communicative learning strategies.
La Restauration Rapide: An Affront To The Collective Cultural Memory Of French Cuisine, Amye Sukapdjo
La Restauration Rapide: An Affront To The Collective Cultural Memory Of French Cuisine, Amye Sukapdjo
The Coastal Review
A collective cultural memory is established through the evolving interactions and interpretations that a group has with socially contextualized knowledge and experiences. Three elements are necessary: shared history, shared values, and shared language. The cultural construct of French cuisine has been central to its national identity since the early nineteenth century. Yet it has experienced an “assault” from a differing model of production and consumption calledla restauration rapide. How has France’s patrimoine culinaire (re-)interpreted this assault in its collective cultural memory? Reactions include a forged culinary (anti-)identity and a (re-)appropriation of the most offending foodstuff – the hamburger.

Global Freud (Fall 2013), Robert D. Tobin
Syllabi
In 1909, Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis went global. At the behest of Clark's president G. Stanley Hall, Freud traveled with Carl Jung and Sandor Ferenczi from Vienna, capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to speak at Clark University. Clark is the only university in the Americas at which Freud ever lectured and the only university in the world to have given Freud an honorary degree. Freud's visit to Clark took place at the cusp of his career -- ten years before his visit he was known only to a small group in Vienna while ten years after his visit he was …
