Curriculum Reform In Rural China: An Exploratory Case Study, Patricia E. Riley Jan 2013

Curriculum Reform In Rural China: An Exploratory Case Study, Patricia E. Riley

Research & Issues in Music Education

This case study consisted of an examination of the perspectives of students, teachers, and administrators at the Shuangling Primary School, a rural Chinese school in Shaanxi Province, as they relate to themes of China’s most recent curricular reform efforts. The intent was to understand these perspectives and determine how to best assist teachers in rural primary schools in Shaanxi Province, and perhaps more broadly in other rural Chinese primary schools, in implementing the themes outlined in the reform document (Ministry of Education of the Peoples’ Republic of China, 2010). Researcher narrative describes this exploration, and data include student, teacher, and …

The Teacher-Student Writing Conference Reimaged: Entangled Becoming-Writingconferencing, Donna Kalmbach Phillips, Mindy Legard Larson

Faculty Publications

This analysis is experimental: we attempt to read data with the work of Karen Barad and in doing so ‘see’ teacher-student writing conferences (a common pedagogy of US elementary school writing) as intra-activity. Data were gathered during teacher-student writing conferences in a grade five US classroom over a six week period. One conference between a researcher and a male Latino student, a Student of Labels, is diffracted. Reading and writing and thinking with Barad disrupts our habitual ways of privileging language as representational. Rather, we consider the material-discursive practices of schooling that produce what comes to matter, leading …

The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The number of Asian American families is on the rise. Asian American families are a diverse group. This chapter focuses on Asian American families that migrated to the United States in the last three decades. This chapter challenges the media’s depiction of them as a Model Minority. Because of this stereotype, many challenges that this group encounters may not gain adequate attention. The chapter examines their strengths and resiliency, along with the ecology of stress that influences family dynamics.

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Efficient shoot bud formation (94.5 ± 7.59), in vitro regeneration and production of flowers were obtained from sterile plants of Begonia x hiemalis Fotsch. An in vitro regeneration was attempted using immature reproductive organs, which were not commonly used before, such as young inflorescences, peduncles and petals of flowers collected in the field. The flower segments were cultured on solid Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, supplemented with various concentrations and combinations of plant growth regulators (PGRs) and adenine. Within 8 weeks of the culture period, the highest frequency of reproductive shoot regeneration (red calyx, 8.50) was obtained from explants of …

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The current study investigates if psychosocial work environment, organizational justice and work family conflict predict Malaysian workers’ wellbeing. The current study expands previous research by assessing wellbeing using composite measures of job satisfaction, life satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect as well as job affective wellbeing, psychological and spiritual wellbeing. One thousand one hundred and sixty five Malaysian workers in the manufacturing sector (551 men, 614 women, age range: 18-59 years) answered questionnaires. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that psychosocial work environment, organizational justice and work family conflict predicted wellbeing. With regard to ethnic and cultural differences in wellbeing, Indian-Malaysians …

Gordon Arbuckle, Linda Stalker Prokopy, Tonya Haigh, Jon Hobbs, Tricia Knoot, Cody Knutson, Adam Loy, Amber Saylor Mase, Jean Mcguire, Lois Wright Morton, John Tyndall, Melissa Widhalm

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

A February 2012 survey of almost 5,000 farmers across a region of the U.S. that produces more than half of the nation’s corn and soybean revealed that 66% of farmers believed climate change is occurring (8% mostly anthropogenic, 33% equally human and natural, 25% mostly natural), while 31% were uncertain and 3.5% did not believe that climate change is occurring. Results of initial analyses indicate that farmers’ beliefs about climate change and its causes vary considerably, and the relationships between those beliefs, concern about the potential impacts of climate change, and attitudes toward adaptive and mitigative action differ in systematic …

Teotwawki A Cultural Analysis Of Post-Apocalyptic Literature And Film, Zachariah Eidelman Jan 2013

Teotwawki A Cultural Analysis Of Post-Apocalyptic Literature And Film, Zachariah Eidelman

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores late-twentieth century and twenty-first century works concerned with representing what comes after "The End of the World as We Know It" (or TEOTWAWKI, as indexed by similarly concerned online communities). Furthermore, it examines three modes of representation—novels, graphic novels, and films—in order to enhance the socio-cultural relevancy of both the post-apocalyptic scenario and these narratives' respective applications of it therein. Margaret Atwood's fiction, for instance, which is the central focus of the first chapter, reveals a vision of a not-too-distant future America that eerily resembles our own time; moreover, Atwood's notoriety for thoroughly researching cultural relics (e.g. …

Communication Satisfaction And Part-Time Employees In A Park And Recreation Organization, Debra Lynn Derosa Jan 2013

Communication Satisfaction And Part-Time Employees In A Park And Recreation Organization, Debra Lynn Derosa

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate levels of communication satisfaction depending on work status (whether employees work on a full-time or part-time basis) in a single municipal park and recreation organization. Part-time and full-time employees were surveyed using the Down and Hazen's Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire, resulting in 40 usable responses. The results showed that both part-time and full-time employees surveyed had low levels of communication satisfaction in the researched organization. Part-time employees had slightly higher levels of communication satisfaction than the full-time employees in each of the eight communication dimensions researched. This study draws attention for organizational need …

Perspectiyes Of Struggling Readers On The Reading Process, Gaye Lynn Francisco

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to discover how stmggling readers view the process of learning to read. The study uses qualitative methods to interview nine students, age eight through twelve, with a series of questions to discover what things they feel is helpful in learning to read. In addition, questions were asked to help identify the social and emotional perspectives of struggling readers. Two parent surveys were returned that supported statements made by their children. The results revealed that eight students preferred to use phonics over any other reading strategy. One student rated sounding out words as his second …

Understanding Precision Nitrogen Stress To Optimize The Growth And Lipid Content Tradeoff In Oleaginous Green Microalgae, Curtis Adams, Valerie Godfrey, Bruce Bugbee, Brad Wahlen, Lance Seefeldt Jan 2013

Understanding Precision Nitrogen Stress To Optimize The Growth And Lipid Content Tradeoff In Oleaginous Green Microalgae, Curtis Adams, Valerie Godfrey, Bruce Bugbee, Brad Wahlen, Lance Seefeldt

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Nitrogen deficiency promotes lipid formation in many microalgae, but also limits growth and lipid productivity. In spite of numerous studies, there is poor understanding of the interactions of growth and lipid content, the time course of lipid accumulation and the magnitude of nitrogen deficiency required to stimulate lipid formation. These relationships were investigated in six species of oleaginous green algae, comparing high and low levels of deficiency. Nitrogen stress typically had disproportionate effects on growth and lipid content, with profound differences among species. Optimally balancing the tradeoffs required a wide range in nitrogen supply rate among species. Some species grew …

Emotion Meaning-Making: Identity, Discourse And Social Interaction Among Arab Immigrant Healthcare Providers, Anne Katz Jan 2013

Emotion Meaning-Making: Identity, Discourse And Social Interaction Among Arab Immigrant Healthcare Providers, Anne Katz

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation sought to deepen understandings of emotion and its role in human personal and social life by exploring how a group of Arab immigrant health care providers, involved in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in one clinic in the United States, assign meaning to emotion. Affectively charged and fluid, often involving conditions of disruption and dislocation, the experience of migration offers a fertile place in which to examine the roles that social and interpretive practices play in constituting emotional experience. Due to increases in patterns of migration associated with globalization, mental health diagnoses are often arrived at …

Self-Other Differences And Perceived Effectiveness: A Look Across Culture Dimensions, Nathalie Castano Jan 2013

Self-Other Differences And Perceived Effectiveness: A Look Across Culture Dimensions, Nathalie Castano

Wayne State University Dissertations

The use of 360-degree feedback is prominent across the world. Several studies have in-vestigated the impact of culture on different aspects of 360-degree feedback, such as self-other agreement, but very few have studied how ratings on these instruments predict perceptions of leadership effectiveness, and whether this relationship is the same across different societies. The present study seeks to narrow the gap between cross-cultural research and 360-degree feedback, by (a) investigating the role that culture plays on the self-other agreement and effectiveness relationship from a culture dimension perspective and (b) comparing how different cultural aspects help explain this relationship. As barriers …

Adoption Of Short Message Service: Gender Difference, Chulsung Kim, Dong-Gook Kim, Chongwoo Park

Publications and Research

While the adoption of mobile devices has recently received research attention, there has been little research focusing on a specific application or service running in mobile devices. In this study, we examine the adoption of short message service (SMS) with the technology acceptance model. The model has been assessed with the data collected from 225 SMS users. Results from the partial least squares analysis show that perceived ease of use of SMS positively affects perceived usefulness of SMS and intention to adopt SMS, and perceived usefulness of SMS also positively affects intention to adopt SMS. Comparing the two factors, perceived …

The Nature Of International Cross-Cultural Experiences As Articulated By U. S. Secondary Teachers, Kirsten A. Barnes

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this microethnographic qualitative study was to explore the nature of international cross-cultural travel experiences as articulated by U.S. secondary teachers, through in-depth personal interviews and personal self-reflections. The purposive sample included eight licensed secondary teachers from a rural high school in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, who had traveled internationally with each having more than 16 years of teaching experience. Through the two interviews and reflective journal entries of each participant, I explored the nature of international cross-cultural travel experiences: (1) how did participants describe their international cross-cultural travel experiences (2) what did international cross-cultural travel experiences …

Yolombó Y Su Marquesa: Antípodas De La Noción Exclusivista De Los Estudios Nortransatlánticos, Arturo Ortiz

The Coastal Review

Relatively, until the discovery of America, the Atlantic Ocean was unknown to Europe, but in the last fifty years it has become the centre of the Western civilization, especially the north corner of the Ocean, the North Atlantic. This selectivecentre includes at least half a dozen countries, Canada, USA, England, France, Holland and Germany. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the Atlantic Ocean is more complicated and much larger. La Marquesa de Yolombó is the counterpoint of this notion of exclusion, for three centuries, from the Caribbean sea almost all the wealth of the Spanish …

The Effect Of National Culture On Entrepreneurs’ Networks: A Comparison Of The Mena Region And Denmark, Hadia Fakhreldin, Hazbo Skoko, Maryam Cheraghi Jan 2013

The Effect Of National Culture On Entrepreneurs’ Networks: A Comparison Of The Mena Region And Denmark, Hadia Fakhreldin, Hazbo Skoko, Maryam Cheraghi

Business Administration

This study examines the effect of cultural variables on entrepreneurs’ networks in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region countries and Denmark. Using data collected by the GEM surveys and clustered for the purpose of this research, analysis is undertaken on the effect of cultural variables on entrepreneurs’ private networks in addition to their work, professional, market and international networks. The major cultural contrast in the empirical analysis is between Denmark and the MENA countries. Traditionalism dominates in the MENA region while secular-rationalism pervades Denmark: trust is widespread in Denmark, but more limited to family members in MENA; and …

Firearms And The Black Community: An Assessment Of The Modern Orthodoxy Commentary: Gun Control Policy And The Second Amendment, Nicholas J. Johnson Jan 2013

Firearms And The Black Community: An Assessment Of The Modern Orthodoxy Commentary: Gun Control Policy And The Second Amendment, Nicholas J. Johnson

Connecticut Law Review

The heroes of the modern civil rights movement were more than just stoic victims of racist violence. Their history was one of defiance and fighting long before news cameras showed them attacked by dogs and fire hoses. When Fannie Lou Hamer revealed she kept a shotgun in every corner of her bedroom, she was channeling a century old practice. And when delta share cropper Hartman Turnbow, after a shootout with the Klan, said “I don’t figure I was being non-nonviolent, (yes non-nonviolent) I was just protecting my family”, he was invoking an evolved tradition that embraced self-defense and disdained political …

(A)Filiaciones Femeninas: Gorriti Y La Genealogía De La Escritura En Lima, Rocío Del Águila

Decoding 5hmc As An Active Chromatin Mark In The Brain And Its Link To Rett Syndrome, Pinar Ayata Jan 2013

Decoding 5hmc As An Active Chromatin Mark In The Brain And Its Link To Rett Syndrome, Pinar Ayata

Student Theses and Dissertations

Functions of the nervous system are accompanied at the cellular level by changes in gene expression, regulated by transcription factors and epigenetic mechanisms, such as histone modifications and DNA methylation, that are frequently altered in neurological disorders. 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), a recently identified DNA base derived from 5-methylcytosine, accounts for ~40% of modified cytosines in the neuronal genomes, suggesting that 5hmC is a stable epigenetic mark and its interpretation in the nervous system may differ from the other tissues. This hypothesis was supported by the recent findings showing that 5hmC is enriched over the bodies of active genes within euchromatin in …

Sociological Jurisprudence 2.0: Updating Law's Interdisciplinarity In A Global Context, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2013

Sociological Jurisprudence 2.0: Updating Law's Interdisciplinarity In A Global Context, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The gap between law’s pronouncement of rules and their impact or failure in concrete social environments has long prompted efforts to make lawyers more responsive to the “realities on the ground”. While this turn to sociological jurisprudence seemed a logical consequence of the Legal Realists’ attack on formalism and positivism, it exposed legal theory to a never-ending series of questions concerning the limits of law in becoming an empirically informed social science. Even trailblazing Legal Realists themselves questioned the extent to which empirical knowledge might erode the core of law’s claim to authority. Where are we today, after numerous transgressions …
