Surface Water Dynamics Of Shallow Lakes Following Wildfire In Boreal Alaska, Garrett L. Altmann Dec 2013

Surface Water Dynamics Of Shallow Lakes Following Wildfire In Boreal Alaska, Garrett L. Altmann

Forest Sciences

Wildfire is ubiquitous to interior Alaska and is the primary large-scale disturbance regime affecting thawing permafrost and ecosystem processes in boreal forests. Since surface and near surface hydrology is strongly affected by permafrost occurrence, and wildfire can consume insulating organic layers that partially control the thickness of the active layer overlying permafrost, changes in the active layer thickness following fire may mark a distinct change in surface hydrology. In this study, we examined surface area dynamics of lakes following wildfire in four regions of Interior Alaska during a 25-year period from 1984 - 2009. We compared the surface water dynamics …

Foster Parent Training For The Delivery Of Independent Living Skills, Kandy Alley Dec 2013

Foster Parent Training For The Delivery Of Independent Living Skills, Kandy Alley

Counseling

Although training is made available to foster parents when they volunteer to share their homes with children in need, the required ten hours for single parents and fifteen hours for coupled parents does not provide enough training for foster parents who are working with youth preparing for independent living to give them the skills they need to succeed. There are many programs designed for youth, but fewer programs are readily available in Fairbanks, Alaska to teach foster parents how to deliver the skills to the youth. Youth leaving foster care continue to have lower outcomes in education, employment, housing, and …

Academic, Behavioral And Social Intervention Strategies For Elementary Children With Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Kristin Flora Dec 2013

Academic, Behavioral And Social Intervention Strategies For Elementary Children With Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Kristin Flora

Counseling

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience academic, behavioral and social challenges that can interfere with their ability to participate fully in the school environment. School districts are legally mandated to provide services to students with disabilities. This paper provides definitions of ASD, addresses some of the diagnostic testing instruments, describes theoretical approaches, and looks at three evidence-based intervention strategies that could be utilized by a school counselor and staff members to work effectively with students with autism. The first is applied behavioral analysis (ABA) which centers on teaching small, measurable units of behavior systematically. The second intervention is assistive …

Toxicodistribution Of Mercury And Selenium In Pinnipeds Of Alaska, Lucero Correa Dec 2013

Toxicodistribution Of Mercury And Selenium In Pinnipeds Of Alaska, Lucero Correa

Chemistry and Biochemistry

This study is divided into two major parts (chapters) in order to better understand mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) tissue distribution in pinnipeds. The first part of the study focuses on determining total mercury ([THg]) and selenium ([TSe]) concentrations (mass and molar based) among cardiac and renal tissues of ice seals (focus on bearded seals, Erignathus barbatus) as compared to the more traditionally analyzed tissues (e.g. liver, skeletal muscle). Determining Hg distribution within these tissues is essential in establishing sampling methods for biomonitoring, histopathology and biochemistry of Hg. Age was determined to be an important driver of [THg] and Se:Hg …

Stat3 Inhibitor Having Anti-Cancer Activity And Methods, James Turkson, Said Sebti, Richard Jove, Andrew D. Hamilton

USF Patents

A small-molecule Stat3 dimerization inhibitor, S3I-M2001, is described and the dynamics of intracellular processing of activated Stat3 within the context of the biochemical and biological effects of the Stat3 chemical probe inhibitor are elucidated. S3I-M2001 is a newly-identified oxazole-based peptidomimetic of the Stat3 Src Homology (SH) 2 domain-binding phosphotyrosine peptide that selectively disrupts active Stat3:Stat3 dimers. Stat3-dependent malignant transformation, survival, and migration and invasion of mouse and human cancer cells harboring persistently-activated Stat3 were inhibited by S3I-M2001. S3I-M2001 inhibited Stat3-dependent transcriptional regulation of tumor survival genes, such as Bcl-xL. The disclosed compound is useful as a new potential treatment for …

Bride-Stealing: A Myth Of Misogyny, Seetha Murugesan Dec 2013

Bride-Stealing: A Myth Of Misogyny, Seetha Murugesan

Indigenous Studies

Bride-stealing, an explicit symbolic misogynistic action in The Iliad and The Kamba Ramayanam, is analyzed as a long-term patterned conduct of human behavior among the peoples who produced these works. The systematic pattern of bride stealing found in the epics discussed suggests that within these groups social constructs had always been in favor of female inferiority and subjugation. This places an emphasis on gender as an issue, manifested in the treatment of women by men as "others." The narrations of marginalization of women in the epics lead to a critique of the hypothesis that they are misogynistic. Here a framework …

An Algorithm For Motion Estimation From The Tomographic Data, Alexander Katsevich, Michael Silver, Alexander Zamyatin Dec 2013

An Algorithm For Motion Estimation From The Tomographic Data, Alexander Katsevich, Michael Silver, Alexander Zamyatin

UCF Patents

In this paper we study local tomography (LT) in the motion contaminated case. It is shown that microlocally, away from some critical directions, LT is equivalent to a pseudo-differential operator of order one. LT also produces non-local artifacts that are of the same strength as useful singularities. If motion is not accurately known, singularities inside the object f being scanned spread in different directions. A single edge can become a double edge. In such a case the image of f looks cluttered. Based on this observation we propose an algorithm for motion estimation. We propose an empiric measure of image …

Jakobshavn Isbr_: Velocity Variations From Hourly To Decadal Time Scales At Greenland's Fastest Tidewater Glacier, David Bryan Podrasky Dec 2013

Jakobshavn Isbr_: Velocity Variations From Hourly To Decadal Time Scales At Greenland's Fastest Tidewater Glacier, David Bryan Podrasky

Geosciences

Outlet glaciers in Greenland, and elsewhere, have recently shown large variations in terminus position and ice flux. One example is the tidewater retreat of Jakobshavn Isbr_, which began in the late 1990s with high thinning rates, acceleration and collapse of the floating glacier tongue. The retreat has continued to the present, with glacier speeds more than doubling in two decades' time. A campaign of in-situ measurements was initiated in 2006 with the aim of determining the importance of short-term forcing as a control on the continuing evolution of the glacier. Three years of continuous GPS measurements along the centerline of …

Carbon Biogeochemistry Of The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Jessica Cross Dec 2013

Carbon Biogeochemistry Of The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Jessica Cross

Marine Biology

The uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO₂) has caused perturbations to marine biogeochemistry in recent years, including decreasing ocean pH and carbonate mineral saturation states (Ω). Collectively termed ocean acidification (OA), these conditions hinder the growth of calcium carbonate shells and effectively reduce habitat for some marine calcifiers. Given that the Bering Sea is one of the world's most productive marine ecosystems and supports both commercial fishing industries and subsistence communities, it is integral to understand its susceptibility to OA. Here, new observations of the organic and inorganic carbon systems are used to identify mechanisms leading to CO₂ accumulation and …

Tattoo Stigma And Job Discrimination, Phil Drazewski Dec 2013

Tattoo Stigma And Job Discrimination, Phil Drazewski

Theses and Dissertations

Recent research (Madera & Hebl, 2011) has found that visible stigmas can lead to discrimination against stigmatized individuals in the form of lower job applicant ratings. Tattooed individuals may be one group that faces such discrimination. People with tattoos are perceived less positively than non-tattooed people (Martin & Dula, 2010; Resenhoeft, Villa, & Wiseman, 2008), which may be the result of a tattoo stigma. Pryor & Reeder (2011) suggested that one hallmark of stigmas is that they evoke implicit negative attitudes. In a pilot study, participants implicitly and explicitly evaluated tattooed and non-tattooed individuals, and a tattoo stigma was supported. …

Foxes And Food Subsidies: Anthropogenic Food Use By Red And Arctic Foxes, And Effects On Arctic Fox Survival, On The Arctic Coastal Plain Of Alaska, Garrett Savory Dec 2013

Foxes And Food Subsidies: Anthropogenic Food Use By Red And Arctic Foxes, And Effects On Arctic Fox Survival, On The Arctic Coastal Plain Of Alaska, Garrett Savory

Biological Sciences

Food subsidies have the potential to impact wildlife on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska. Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes (L., 1758)) expanded their range into Arctic regions during the 20th century, and the availability of anthropogenic foods may have contributed to their success and persistence in the Arctic. Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus (L., 1758)) are also known to forage on anthropogenic foods in Prudhoe Bay and to forage on marine mammals on the sea ice, but it is unknown whether these strategies benefit survival of Arctic foxes. This thesis examined: 1) the importance of anthropogenic foods to the diets of …

Habitat Associations, Distribution, And Abundance Of Smith's Longspur (Calcarius Pictus), An Uncommon Species Of Concern In The Brooks Range, Alaska, Teri Corvus Wild Dec 2013

Habitat Associations, Distribution, And Abundance Of Smith's Longspur (Calcarius Pictus), An Uncommon Species Of Concern In The Brooks Range, Alaska, Teri Corvus Wild

Biological Sciences

Smith's Longspur (Calcarius pictus) is a species of conservation concern in the U.S. and Canada, yet few studies have been conducted on their breeding grounds in the Arctic, which are expected to undergo dramatic changes due to climate change. For effective conservation, we need information on breeding distribution and abundance; thus I conducted surveys for Smith's Longspur and habitat characteristics across a broad geographic range that included twelve sites within Alaska's Brooks Range, June 2003-2009. My main objectives were to (1) locate breeding populations (2) describe habitats at local and broader geographic scales, (3) develop a predictive distribution map based …

Causes And Consequences Of Geophagy In Snowshoe Hares (Lepus Americanus), An Important Generalist Herbivore Of The Boreal Forest, Suzanne Worker Dec 2013

Causes And Consequences Of Geophagy In Snowshoe Hares (Lepus Americanus), An Important Generalist Herbivore Of The Boreal Forest, Suzanne Worker

Biological Sciences

Geophagy, the consumption of mineral soil, is believed to have several benefits for herbivores. Soils high in clay are often implicated in the detoxification of plant secondary metabolites. High mineral concentrations in soils may also provide nutrients that are poorly available from plants. Local observers report that snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) use a lick in the foothills of the Brooks Range, Alaska. Using soil from this lick and other mineral supplements, I conducted a series of feeding trials on captive snowshoe hares fed felt-leaf willow (Salix alaxensis) or a formulated ration to determine whether geophagy resulted in a physiological benefit …

Modeling Winter Severity And Harvest Of Moose: Impacts Of Nutrition And Predation, Cameron Jewett Carroll Dec 2013

Modeling Winter Severity And Harvest Of Moose: Impacts Of Nutrition And Predation, Cameron Jewett Carroll

Biological Sciences

Climate change is expected to have both positive and negative impacts on northern ungulate populations. Moose (Alces alces) will likely benefit from an increase in the growing season length and frequency of wildfire. However, increases in extreme weather events may result in moose population declines, particularly for nutritionally stressed moose populations. Management strategies to reduce the nutritional stress of populations may become increasingly important. We used stage-structured population models to examine the impact of deep-snow events on moose population trajectories and evaluated female harvest strategies designed to mitigate nutritional stress by decreasing intraspecific competition. Population trajectories were primarily influenced by …

Evolution In A Tropical Archipelago: Comparisons Within And Among 50 Species Of Philippine Birds, Kyle Campbell Dec 2013

Evolution In A Tropical Archipelago: Comparisons Within And Among 50 Species Of Philippine Birds, Kyle Campbell

Biological Sciences

Tropical islands are hotspots for speciation and the generation of genetic diversity within species. The islands of the Philippines have experienced dynamic biogeographic histories, making them excellent for studying the processes affecting the generation and distribution of genetic diversity. I tested hypotheses about the distribution of population genetic diversity within species and examined levels of genetic and phenotypic divergence within 50 species of Philippine birds. The first study empirically tested two models for the distribution of population genetic diversity (increasing diversity with decreasing latitude and decreasing diversity approaching range edges) and found no support for either model. This was not …

A Kinetic Study Of Aqueous Calcium Carbonate, Derek Daniel Harris Dec 2013

A Kinetic Study Of Aqueous Calcium Carbonate, Derek Daniel Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) precipitation is modeled using particle nucleation, growth, and aggregation. The particles are tracked in terms of their radial size and particle density using direct quadrature method of moments (DQMOM). Four separate nucleation models are implemented and are compared to experimental data. In discord with a recent study, it is shown that classical nucleation, coupled with equilibrium chemistry, is in good agreement with experimental data. Novel nucleation mechanisms are presented which fit the experimental data with slightly greater accuracy. Using equilibrium chemistry it is shown that the equilibrium value of ACC is pKeq = 7.74 at 24C, …

Observation And Analysis On The Characteristics Of Strain Induced By Frost Heave For A Full-Scale Buried, Chilled Gas Pipeline, Kun Yang Dec 2013

Observation And Analysis On The Characteristics Of Strain Induced By Frost Heave For A Full-Scale Buried, Chilled Gas Pipeline, Kun Yang

Engineering

This thesis examines the strain characteristics of a large-scale, buried chilled gas pipeline in the discontinuous permafrost region. A full-scale chilled pipeline gas experiment was conducted in Fairbanks, Alaska. The test pipeline had a length of 105 m and a diameter of 0.9 m. One-third of the pipeline was located in permafrost and the rest was in non-permafrost. The monitoring data were collected from December 1999 to January 2005 including both freezing and thawing phases. In the transition zone between frozen and unfrozen soil, the foundation experienced a vertical movement caused by differential frost heave. The test results indicated that …

Overcoming Cubesat Downlink Limits With Vitamin: A New Variable Coded Modulation Protocol, Thomas Sielicki Dec 2013

Overcoming Cubesat Downlink Limits With Vitamin: A New Variable Coded Modulation Protocol, Thomas Sielicki

Engineering

Many space missions, including low earth orbit CubeSats, communicate in a highly dynamic environment because of variations in geometry, weather, and interference. At the same time, most missions communicate using fixed channel codes, modulations, and symbol rates, resulting in a constant data rate that does not adapt to the dynamic conditions. When conditions are good, the fixed date rate can be far below the theoretical maximum, called the Shannon limit; when conditions are bad, the fixed data rate may not work at all. To move beyond these fixed communications and achieve higher total data volume from emerging high-tech instruments, this …

Analysis Of An Oscillating Plate Coupled With Fluid, Michael J. Nash Dec 2013

Analysis Of An Oscillating Plate Coupled With Fluid, Michael J. Nash

Engineering

The mechanical vibration of an oscillating cantilever plate is studied to determine the interaction of a plate coupled with air and with water. Experimental data was collected and analyzed using multiple methods including Fast Fourier Transform, wavelet analysis, and the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) to characterize the behavior of the plate. The HHT is able to process nonlinear and nonstationary signals and provides more meaningful information compared to the traditionally used Fourier transform for similar applications. The HHT was found to be appropriate and more descriptive for the analysis of coupled fluid-structure systems. Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) was also used …

Rapid Thinning And Collapse Of Lake Calving Yakutat Glacier, Southeast Alaska, Barbara Lea Trüssel Dec 2013

Rapid Thinning And Collapse Of Lake Calving Yakutat Glacier, Southeast Alaska, Barbara Lea Trüssel

Geosciences

Glaciers around the globe are experiencing a notable retreat and thinning, triggered by atmospheric warming. Tidewater glaciers in particular have received much attention, because they have been recognized to contribute substantially to global sea level rise. How-ever, lake calving glaciers in Alaska show increasingly high thinning and retreat rates and are therefore contributors to sea level rise. The number of such lake calving systems is increasing worldwide as land-terminating glaciers retreat into overdeepened basins and form proglacial lakes. Yakutat Glacier in Southeast Alaska is a low elevation lake calving glacier with an accumulation to total area ratio of 0.03. It …

Growth-Increment Formation Using Otoliths And Scales Of Juvenile Chinook Salmon, Brian Michael Walker Dec 2013

Growth-Increment Formation Using Otoliths And Scales Of Juvenile Chinook Salmon, Brian Michael Walker

Fisheries

Freshwater growth of juvenile Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha influences survival and recruitment to the adult population. Retrospective analysis is used to measure salmon growth at previous ages, with fish size and growth assumed to be accurately reflected by otolith increments and scale circuli. I conducted a 122-d laboratory experiment to validate the relationship among body size, growth, and width to daily otolith growth increments and scale circuli in juvenile stream-type Chinook salmon. Fish total length was found to be proportional to otolith axis length (r² = 0.209, p < 0.001), otolith diameter (r² = 0.667, p < 0.001), and scale radius (r² = 0.538, p < 0.001). Somatic growth was accurately reflected by growth in otolith axis length (r² 0.65, p < 0.001) and growth in scale radius (r² = 0.449, p < 0.001). My study validated the assumption that fish body size and growth are reflected by otolith and scale size and growth- increment formation. The findings of my study can be used to ascertain body size at previous ages, which will help managers detect threshold sizes, examine the strength of size-selective mortality, and determine how growth rate affects smolt migration, early marine survival, and duration of ocean residency.

The Phylogeography And Population Genetic Structure Of Least Cisco (Coregonus Sardinella) In Alaska, Veronica M. Padula Dec 2013

The Phylogeography And Population Genetic Structure Of Least Cisco (Coregonus Sardinella) In Alaska, Veronica M. Padula

Fisheries

The least cisco (Coregonus sardinella) is a whitefish species broadly distributed across the Arctic regions of Russia, Alaska, and Canada, and little is known about the genetic relationships among groups within this species. We investigated the genetic relationships among least cisco on two landscape scales. On a broader landscape scale, we investigated the relationships among populations across the state of Alaska by comparing mitochondria) DNA (mtDNA) sequences. On a finer landscape scale, we investigated the relationships among least cisco populations in closely located lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain by comparing microsatellite DNA haplotypes. Data from mtDNA suggest that least …
