Consciousness As Integrated Information: A Provisional Philosophical Critique, Anthony F. Peressini Jan 2013

Consciousness As Integrated Information: A Provisional Philosophical Critique, Anthony F. Peressini

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Giulio Tononi (2008) has offered his integrated information theory of consciousness (IITC) as a ‘provisional manifesto’. I critically examine how the approach fares. I point out some (relatively) internal concerns with the theory and then more broadly philosophical ones; finally I assess the prospects for IITC as a fundamental theory of consciousness. I argue that the IITC’s scientific promise does carry over to a significant extent to broader philosophical theorizing about qualia and consciousness, though not as directly as Tononi suggests, since the account is much more focused on the qualitative character of experience rather than on consciousness itself. I …

This study aims to measure the financial viability of installing and using a residential grid-connected PV system in the State of Indiana while predicting its performance in eighteen geographical locations within the state over the system's expected lifetime. The null hypothesis of the study is that installing a PV system for a single family residence in the State of Indiana will not pay for itself within 25 years. Using a systematic approach consisting of six steps, data regarding the use of renewable energy in the State of Indiana was collected from the website of the US Department of Energy to …

Diurnal And Nocturnal Avian Antipredator Behavior In Thermally Challenging Conditions, Jennie M. Carr Jan 2013

Diurnal And Nocturnal Avian Antipredator Behavior In Thermally Challenging Conditions, Jennie M. Carr

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diurnal avian antipredator behavior has been the focus of much past research, yet the influence of the thermal environment on such behaviors is often overlooked. Far less is known about nocturnal avian antipredator behavior, including how these behaviors are influenced by challenging thermal environments. The first portion of my research focused on how the thermal environment influences the diurnal antipredator behavior of wintering birds while (i) exposed to high wind speeds, (ii) foraging in sunlit and shaded microhabitats, and (iii) when using thermoregulatory postures to conserve body heat. In addition to increasing convective heat loss, high wind speeds increase the …

Reforming Legal Education To Prepare Law Students Optimally For Real-World Practice , John Lande Jan 2013

Reforming Legal Education To Prepare Law Students Optimally For Real-World Practice , John Lande

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This article synthesizes some of the main points of the symposium contributors. They covered a wide range of key issues and thus this symposium provides a good overview of the challenges of and options for legal education reform. Of course, given the vast scope of the problems presented, this symposium issue of the Journal of Dispute Resolution cannot provide an all-encompassing analysis nor a comprehensive set of recommendations for reform. We do, however, hope that it will be a useful contribution to the growing movement and literature designed to improve legal education in the U.S. Part II of this article …

Stigma And The Acceptability Of Depression Treatments Among African American Clergy, Connie Gardner Jan 2013

Stigma And The Acceptability Of Depression Treatments Among African American Clergy, Connie Gardner

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this cross sectional study was to investigate stigma associated with depression treatments and to approximate its association with treatment acceptability among African American Clergy. There were 109 African American clergy who completed three measures: treatment specific stigma instrument, treatment acceptability instrument, and a demographic questionnaire, anonymously. Three hypotheses were tested using descriptive statistics, Mantel-Haenszel common odds ratio estimate, Pearson correlation coefficient, and ordinal logistic regression. Statistical analysis revealed stigma did increase with the expansion of the social circle; Christian mental health counseling had the highest acceptability rate among clergy not pastoral or lay counseling and there was …

Sedimentation Of Swarms Of Particles At Low And Moderate Reynolds Numbers, Oladapo Olanrewaju Ayeni Jan 2013

Sedimentation Of Swarms Of Particles At Low And Moderate Reynolds Numbers, Oladapo Olanrewaju Ayeni

LSU Master's Theses

The sedimentation of a cloud of particles in a viscous fluid at low and moderate Reynolds numbers has been studied using an Eulerian-Lagrangian multiphase flow approach. We looked at the volume fraction dependence of the settling cloud and find a similar dependence in the simulations as in the theoretical predictions of (Nitsche and Batchelor 1997). The average cloud settling velocity and the velocity fluctuations around this average are found to have a functional dependence on ö^1/3 at negligible Reynolds number. The velocity fluctuations display strong anisotropy with the magnitude of the vertical component almost three times the magnitude of the …

Psychological Biases Affect Hedonic Ratings, Wannita Jirangrat Jan 2013

Psychological Biases Affect Hedonic Ratings, Wannita Jirangrat

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Psychological biases in consumer testing may lead to misinterpretation of results and lower experimental power. Reports on various hedonic scales associated with psychological biases induced by sample presentation are limited in the literature. An appropriate experimental protocol could enable sensory scientists to accurately determine if a product is more or less liked. Overall, in this study some drawbacks of hedonic scales were revealed and some recommendations were made under specific circumstances. A more powerful design (SPRCBD) helped minimize positional and First Serving Order (FSO) biases in consumer tests by extracting more explained variances, resulting in decreased Type-II error in the …

Crystal Growth And An Investigation Of Structural Stability: Synthesis, Structure, And Physical Properties Of Yb(Mn,M)Xal12-X (M = Fe, Ru; X < 2.5) And Lnmnxga3 (Ln = Ho-Tm; X < 0.15), Bradford Wesley Fulfer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The contents of this dissertation describe the crystal growth, crystal structures, and physical properties of ternary intermetallic aluminides and gallides. These compounds are grown in an effort to determine how controlling reaction ratios using the flux growth method can impact chemical structure and physical properties. Three specific examples are given where slight changes in reaction ratios leads to crystalline products that adopt various structure types. LnMn2+xAl10-x (Ln = Gd, Yb) crystals adopt the CaCr2Al10 and ThMn12 structure types. We compare LnMn2+xAl10-x compounds adopting the CaCr2Al10 and ThMn12 structure types, and outline synthesis methods to obtain each polymorph. Magnetic susceptibility measurements …

Integrated Functional Anlaysis Of Quorum-Sensing In The Rice Pathogenic Bacterium Burkholderia Glumae, Ruoxi Chen Jan 2013

Integrated Functional Anlaysis Of Quorum-Sensing In The Rice Pathogenic Bacterium Burkholderia Glumae, Ruoxi Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-to-cell communication mechanism that allows bacterial cells to collectively behave like a multicellular organism. It regulates the expression of toxoflavin, one of the major virulence factors of the rice pathogen, Burkholderia glumae. The QS system of B. glumae is mediated by the core genes, tofI and tofR. N-octanoyl-L-homoserine lactone, the primary QS signal molecule of B. glumae, is synthesized by tofI and binds to the cognate receptor tofR at the quorum point. However, tofI and tofR null mutants produce toxoflavin in certain growth conditions, indicating the presence of tofI- and tofR-independent pathways for toxoflavin production. …

The Seven Last Words Of Christ : A Comparison Of Three French Romantic Musical Settings By Gounod, Franck, And Dubois, Vaughn Roste Jan 2013

The Seven Last Words Of Christ : A Comparison Of Three French Romantic Musical Settings By Gounod, Franck, And Dubois, Vaughn Roste

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Seven Last Words of Christ—those sayings uttered by Jesus between his crucifixion and death as recorded in the Gospels—have long been of interest to liturgists and composers alike. Many composers have been inspired by these texts, and this study examines three settings, by Charles Gounod, César Franck, and Theodore Dubois. All were French composers who set this text in Latin during the Romantic era. Not only were these works composed in the same temporal vicinity, within twelve years, but they were also all composed within the same geographic vicinity, Paris. Franck and Dubois even worked together at the same …

Does Flexible Grouping Increase Retention Levels To Improve Test Scores More Than Traditional Lecture In The Science Classroom, Brian Joseph Carter Jan 2013

Does Flexible Grouping Increase Retention Levels To Improve Test Scores More Than Traditional Lecture In The Science Classroom, Brian Joseph Carter

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of my research was to analyze the effect flexible grouping had on science retention scores. Education faces so many challenges today. The old way of teaching, traditional lecture is being challenged. For centuries, traditional lecture was the primary way of teaching and most colleges still use this teaching method. In this thesis traditional lecture and flexible grouping are compared. Through the use of pretests and posttests in my traditional and honors chemistry classes, I tested both strategies. Presentation of seven chapters were used for data collection and through the research, several things were discovered. In this study, honor …

The Effect Of Cajun Status On Kindergartners' Use Of Five Grammar Structures, Corrina Spedale Jan 2013

The Effect Of Cajun Status On Kindergartners' Use Of Five Grammar Structures, Corrina Spedale

LSU Master's Theses

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between Cajun status, as defined by location, and five grammatical structures of Cajun English (CE): zero marking of past tense, zero marking of third person singular, zero marking of copula is and are, and was-leveling. The data were from 35 kindergartners, 14 from a Cajun status school, 21 from a non-Cajun status school; 15 were male and 20 were female. The data compared rate-based differences between the Cajun status and non-Cajun status children’s productions of the five CE structures in transcribed language samples. Five independent samples t-tests revealed that …

Mechanistic Analysis And Reduced Order Modeling Of Forced Film Cooling Flows, Guillaume Francois Bidan Jan 2013

Mechanistic Analysis And Reduced Order Modeling Of Forced Film Cooling Flows, Guillaume Francois Bidan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Abstract Unforced and forced film cooling jets are investigated in view to develop a reduced order model of the velocity and temperature fields. First, a vertical jet in cross-flow, a configuration well documented at high blowing ratios, is investigated at low blowing ratios using experimental visualizations and large eddy simulations. The unforced study reveals that dominant structures at low blowing ratio can be significantly different from the ones formed at high blowing ratio and describes their evolution and transition as the blowing ratio is changed. The forced jet investigations extend the results of past numerical studies in terms of starting …

Peter Klatzow's Six Concert Etudes For Marimba : A Performer's Guide, Daniel Brian Heagney

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Peter Klatzow has become one of the most prominent composers for keyboard percussion over the last thirty years. Several of his works have found their way into the standard repertoire for percussion. The primary purpose of this document is to serve as a performer’s guide to his Six Concert Etudes for Marimba. This document is intended to help percussionists become less intimidated by Klatzow’s music, and make it more approachable. By studying the technical and musical demands within the Concert Etudes, a percussionist will be better prepared to perform Klatzow’s other keyboard percussion compositions. Both technical and musical advice is …

Investigations On The Essentiality Of The Escherichia Coli Deda Membrane Protein Family, Lisa A. Boughner Jan 2013

Investigations On The Essentiality Of The Escherichia Coli Deda Membrane Protein Family, Lisa A. Boughner

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The DedA protein family is a highly conserved family of membrane proteins, with members present throughout all domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. Investigation of the DedA membrane protein family began with the isolation of BC202, an Escherichia coli mutant with in-frame deletions of two DedA proteins of unknown function (YqjA and YghB) that share 61% amino acid identity. BC202 demonstrates temperature sensitivity, inefficient cell division, an altered phospholipid composition, increased expression of extracytoplasmic stress response pathways, as well as an inability to maintain the cell membrane proton motive force (PMF). Additionally, Borrelia burgdorferi has a single DedA homolog …

Impact Of Iudr In Rat 9l Glioma Cell Survival For 25-35 Kev Photo-Activated Auger Electron Therapy, Diane Alvarez Jan 2013

Impact Of Iudr In Rat 9l Glioma Cell Survival For 25-35 Kev Photo-Activated Auger Electron Therapy, Diane Alvarez

LSU Master's Theses

Introduction: Photo-activated Auger electron therapy is a potential technique that could preferentially target cancer cells. This binary therapy uses a drug containing a high-Z element like iododeoxyuridine (IUdR), which serves as a radiosensitizer and molecular carrier of high-Z iodine into cancer cell DNA. Iodine becomes the Auger electron source when activated by photons with an appropriate energy. This work studied the survival of rat 9L glioma cells with IUdR replacing thymidine in the DNA. Irradiations at monochromatic energies above and below the iodine K-edge (33.2 keV) are part of a larger study from 25-70 keV. It was hypothesized that SER10 …

Comparing The Treatment Effect Of Conversational And Traditional Aphasia Treatments On Linguistic Complexity Measures, Kelsey Ann Copperberg Jan 2013

Comparing The Treatment Effect Of Conversational And Traditional Aphasia Treatments On Linguistic Complexity Measures, Kelsey Ann Copperberg

LSU Master's Theses

Linguistic complexity is frequently analyzed in studies of child language acquisition and impairment (Heilmann, Miller, & Nockerts, 2010; Price, Hendricks, & Cook, 2010) and the language of aging adults (Capilouto, Wright, & Wagovich, 2005; Kemper & Sumner, 2001; Kemper, Thompson, & Marquis, 2001; Kynette & Kemper, 1986; Shewan & Henderson, 1988) to document changes over time. There is little, if any, literature applying linguistic measures to analyze the language of individuals with aphasia as well as to analyze effects of different treatment measures. The current study analyzed semantic and syntactic components of linguistic complexity used by people with aphasia (PWA) …

Program Analysis : Termination Proofs For Linear Simple Loops, Hongyi Chen Jan 2013

Program Analysis : Termination Proofs For Linear Simple Loops, Hongyi Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Termination proof synthesis for simple loops, i.e., loops with only conjoined constraints in the loop guard and variable updates in the loop body, is the building block of termination analysis, as well as liveness analysis, for large complex imperative systems. In particular, we consider a subclass of simple loops which contain only linear constraints in the loop guard and linear updates in the loop body. We call them Linear Simple Loops (LSLs). LSLs are particularly interesting because most loops in practice are indeed linear; more importantly, since we allow the update statements to handle nondeterminism, LSLs are expressive enough to …

Discrete Phase Simulations Of Drilled Cuttings Transport Process In Highly Deviated Wells, Doguhan Yilmaz Jan 2013

Discrete Phase Simulations Of Drilled Cuttings Transport Process In Highly Deviated Wells, Doguhan Yilmaz

LSU Master's Theses

Transporting drilled cuttings from the bottomhole to the surface becomes more difficult and problematic in highly deviated wells than in vertical wells. Cuttings tend to settle down on the low side of the annulus typically in the form of a bed which can cause further problems. The height of this bed depends on many parameters such as annular domain geometry, drilling fluid density and rheology, annular flow rate, drill pipe rotation speed, cuttings size, shape, and their density. Prediction of the stationary cuttings bed height with respect to these aforementioned parameters is thus necessary to optimize the range of the …

The Individual Mandate's Due Process Legality: A Kantian Explanation, And Why It Matters, Peter Brandon Bayer Jan 2013

The Individual Mandate's Due Process Legality: A Kantian Explanation, And Why It Matters, Peter Brandon Bayer

Scholarly Works

In National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius, one of the most controversial decisions of this young century, an intensely divided Supreme Court upheld the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's most provocative feature-the Individual Mandate-under Congress's taxing power. In so doing, the Court rejected what appeared to be the Individual Mandate's more applicable constitutional premise-Congress's authority to regulate interstate commerce. Yet, neither the Constitution's Taxing Clause nor its Commerce Clause provide the ultimate answer as to whether Congress may regulate the multi-billion dollar healthcare market by compelling unwilling persons to buy private health insurance. The final determination of the …
