This paper critically analyzes a community collaborative approach for implementing Health and Physical Education (HPE) lessons within Gippsland primary schools (Victoria, Australia). The rural community collaborations reflected upon are embedded within the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) ‘School Centres for Teaching Excellence’ (SCTE) initiative and are timely with the current curriculum reform in Health and Physical Education. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on and share the experiential learning offered where the curriculum is relevant, engaging, contemporary, physically active, enjoyable and developmentally appropriate for all stakeholders; namely university pre-service teachers, primary school children and …

Barrier-Repair Prescription Moisturizers: Do We Really Need Them? Facts And Controversies., Ronni Wolf, Lawrence Parish Nov 2013

Barrier-Repair Prescription Moisturizers: Do We Really Need Them? Facts And Controversies., Ronni Wolf, Lawrence Parish

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

There is now scientific evidence of genetically driven skin-barrier anomalies in atopic patients. These barrier anomalies facilitate sustained antigen ingress through the defective barrier, which can bring about a Th2-dominant response. It enhances the transepidermal water loss, resulting in dry skin and leading to the release of preformed proinflammatory cytokines and to a cascade of events ending up in inflammation.

Calculating Time Lags From Unevenly Sampled Light Curves, A. Zoghbi, C. Reynolds, E. M. Cackett Nov 2013

Calculating Time Lags From Unevenly Sampled Light Curves, A. Zoghbi, C. Reynolds, E. M. Cackett

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Timing techniques are powerful tools to study dynamical astrophysical phenomena. In the X-ray band, they offer the potential of probing accretion physics down to the event horizon. Recent work has used frequency- and energy-dependent time lags as tools for studying relativistic reverberation around the black holes in several Seyfert galaxies. This was achieved due to the evenly sampled light curves obtained using XMM-Newton. Continuously sampled data are, however, not always available and standard Fourier techniques are not applicable. Here, building on the work of Miller et al., we discuss and use a maximum likelihood method to obtain frequency-dependent lags that …

Descriptive statistics methods of mode, mean (M), and frequency distributions were utilized, determining the two essential principles receiving readiness levels of developing processes and documents were differentiated levels of educator performance and use of measures of student growth. …

High-Throughput Amplicon Sequencing Of Rrna Genes Requires A Copy Number Correction To Accurately Reflect The Effects Of Management Practices On Soil Nematode Community Structure, B. J. Darby, T. C. Todd, M. A. Herman Nov 2013

High-Throughput Amplicon Sequencing Of Rrna Genes Requires A Copy Number Correction To Accurately Reflect The Effects Of Management Practices On Soil Nematode Community Structure, B. J. Darby, T. C. Todd, M. A. Herman

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Nematodes are abundant consumers in grassland soils, but more sensitive and specific methods of enumeration are needed to improve our understanding of how different nematode species affect, and are affected by, ecosystem processes. High-throughput amplicon sequencing is used to enumerate microbial and invertebrate communities at a high level of taxonomic resolution, but the method requires validation against traditional specimen-based morphological identifications. To investigate the consistency between these approaches, we enumerated nematodes from a 25-year field experiment using both morphological and molecular identification techniques in order to determine the long-term effects of annual burning and nitrogen enrichment on soil nematode communities. …

Juvenile Lifers And Judicial Overrreach: A Curmedgeonly Meditation On Miller V. Alabama, Frank O. Bowman Iii Nov 2013

Juvenile Lifers And Judicial Overrreach: A Curmedgeonly Meditation On Miller V. Alabama, Frank O. Bowman Iii

Missouri Law Review

This Article focuses very little on the implications of Miller and Graham for the population they most directly affect – juvenile offenders previously eligible for sentences of life without parole – and more on the implications of the Court’s reasoning in Miller and Graham for sentencing generally. However gratifying the results of Miller and Graham may be as sentencing policy, they are troubling as a constitutional matter both because they are badly theorized and because they are two strands of a web of decisions in which the Court has consistently used doubtful constitutional interpretations to transfer power over criminal justice …

Cure For Collusive Settlements: The Case For A Per Se Prohibition On Pay-For-Delay Agreements In Pharmaceutical Patent Litigation, A , Michael Owens

Missouri Law Review

This Comment will examine how the particulars of the Hatch-Waxman Act, the regulatory scheme that governs generic competition in pharmaceutical industry, gives rise to reverse settlements in infringement litigation; review existing analysis of the pay for delay problem in judicial decisions, in academic commentary, and amongst antitrust enforcement bodies; and finally, draw upon a decision theoretic framework to propose per se illegality as the appropriate antitrust rule for pay-for-delay settlements.

Lights, Camera, Vote: An Agenda-Setting Analysis Of Celebrity Endorsements And News Correlation During The 2012 Presidential Election, Amanda Jacobsen

Masters Theses

Many studies have been done in order to prove the idea that celebrity endorsements can affect elections; however little research has exposed the ongoing correlation between entertainment and news media in America. This research investigates the strong correlation between entertainment websites and mainstream news websites during the 2012 United States presidential election by way of celebrity endorsements. The sources examined included celebrity, entertainment journalism sites such as The Huffington Post, People and E! as compared to networks; ABC News, NBC News, Fox News, CNN and CBS News. Twelve celebrities were chosen by means of their given Q Score. Their announced …

Originalism: A Critical Introduction, Keith E. Whittington Nov 2013

Originalism: A Critical Introduction, Keith E. Whittington

Fordham Law Review

The theory of originalism is now well into its second wave. Originalism first came to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s as conservative critics reacted to the decisions of the Warren Court, and the Reagan Administration embraced originalism as a check on judicial activism. A second wave of originalism has emerged since the late 1990s, responding to earlier criticisms and reconsidering earlier assumptions and conclusions. This Article assesses where originalist theory currently stands. It outlines the points of agreement and disagreement within the recent originalist literature and highlights the primary areas of continuing separation between originalists and their critics.

Microrna-142 Reduces Monoamine Oxidase A Expression And Activity In Neuronal Cells By Downregulating Sirt1, Amrita Datta Chaudhuri, Sowmya V. Yelamanchili, Howard S. Fox

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

Aberrant expression of microRNAs (miRs) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative disorders. In HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), miR-142 was found to be upregulated in neurons and myeloid cells in the brain. We investigated the downstream effects of chronic miR-142 upregulation in neuronal cells by comparing gene expression in stable clones of the human neuroblastoma cell line BE(2)M17 expressing miR-142 to controls. Microarray analysis revealed that miR-142 expression led to a reduction in monoamine oxidase (MAO) A mRNA, which was validated by qRT-PCR. In addition to the mRNA, the MAOA protein level and enzyme activity were also reduced. …

Eritrean Customary Laws: ‘Old-Modern’ Treasures For Introducing An Effective Sentencing Regime – The “Just Desert” System, Habteab Y. Ogubazghi, Senai W. Andemariam

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Modern criminal justice has often been criticized for the lack of uniformity in sentencing caused principally by the lack of easily identifiable categorization of offences by the degree of their severity and wide range in the sentences set for offences. The ‘Just Desert’ sentencing system has recently been favored as a workable solution. It is acclaimed to guarantee the establishment of fair, proportional, uniform, predictable and efficient criminal justice system. The authors identified elements of just desert in the Eritrean customary laws that just desert can be a sentencing choice fitting to the values and norms of the Eritrean people. …

Exploring Trust In Perception Of Crime Models In South Africa, Kyshawn Smith, Leroy Hamilton Jr. Nov 2013

Exploring Trust In Perception Of Crime Models In South Africa, Kyshawn Smith, Leroy Hamilton Jr.

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Social capital has been poked and prodded by scores of intellectuals across a vast array of disciplines since 18th century Progressive L.J. Hanifan first coined the term (Hanifan 1916), and its resurgence in popularity over the last 30 years has fueled much contemporary discourse in the social sciences. Particularly in criminology, scores of studies conducted during this period articulate the positive and negative effects of social capital in the creation and maintenance of safe, healthy communities and civil social structures (Jacobs 1961; Coleman 1990; Putnam 2000; White N.d.). However, while conceptually social capital and the components of which it is …

Not What, But When Is An Offer: Rehabilitating The Rolling Contract, Colin P. Marks Nov 2013

Not What, But When Is An Offer: Rehabilitating The Rolling Contract, Colin P. Marks

Faculty Works

A number of courts have held that a contract is formed when deferred terms found inside the package are reviewed by the buyer and accepted by some act—usually use of the good. This “rolling” contract approach has been widely criticized by commentators as an abomination of contract law that ignores a true application of the U.C.C., as well as the spirit of that code. However, the approach is not without its allure, as it permits contracts to be formed in an efficient manner that may very well appeal to consumers. Yet too strict of an adherence to the approach threatens …
