Understanding Students’ Technical Skills During Transition From Primary To Secondary School, H. Mohd Fadzil, R. Mohd Saat Nov 2013

Understanding Students’ Technical Skills During Transition From Primary To Secondary School, H. Mohd Fadzil, R. Mohd Saat

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Students lack exposure in ‘hands-on’ activities at primary school lead to insufficient manipulative skills and they may carry this problem with them to secondary school. Although most of the pupils are able to adapt to their new learning environment, some found transition difficult and problematic. Thus, to confront these issues, an in-depth study was proposed. This study resulted from a longitudinal study which employed a qualitative research paradigm. The research involved 10 primary school students (Year Six) and they were interviewed again in secondary school (Form One). Students’ ability in handling thermometer, measuring cylinder, Bunsen burner and microscope were observed …

Using Spreadsheet To Teach Limit Among College Students, C. Kok Fui, S.N.A. Syed Zamri Nov 2013

Using Spreadsheet To Teach Limit Among College Students, C. Kok Fui, S.N.A. Syed Zamri

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The commandment of e-N definition is essential in order to learn the concept of limit. In Malaysia, students will only learn this definition in the tertiary level due to its complicated structure. Although technology component was introduced in secondary schools in year 2006, e-N definition was still not part of the syllabus as if learning of this definition was still impossible to secondary students. Furthermore, because of incorrect notions of limit perceived at the secondary level, students find learning e-N definition to be difficult in the tertiary level. These have motivated the researcher to create a technology-aided module that is …

Access Control In And For The Real World, Sara Sinclair Nov 2013

Access Control In And For The Real World, Sara Sinclair

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Access control is a core component of any information-security strategy. Researchers have spent tremendous energy over the past forty years defining abstract access-control models and proving various properties about them. However, surprisingly little attention has been paid to how well these models work in real socio-technical systems (i.e., real human organizations). This dissertation describes the results of two qualitative studies (involving 52 participants from four companies, drawn from the financial, software, and healthcare sectors) and observes that the current practice of access control is dysfunctional at best. It diagnoses the broken assumptions that are at the heart of this dysfunction, …

A Literature Review Of Uses And Attitudes Towards The Acceptance Of Assistive Real-Time Technology In The Voice Studio, Jeanine F. Wagner Nov 2013

A Literature Review Of Uses And Attitudes Towards The Acceptance Of Assistive Real-Time Technology In The Voice Studio, Jeanine F. Wagner

Research Papers

The human voice is a tool that not only communicates ideas and feelings, but also expresses and elicits emotions. Since the age of Manual Garcia (1805-1906), the inventor of the laryngeal mirror, singers and voice teachers have discussed, argued and philosophized about the most efficient manner in which to train any voice to reach its optimum capability. Singing techniques and the subsequent voice qualities have been strongly divided by cultural and personal preferences. Empiricists carefully guarded their teaching methods and shunned ideas that any other fields might have anything worthwhile to contribute to voice instruction. Voice teachers have been slow …

(Wp 2013-06) The Impact Of Output And Exchange Rate Volatility On Fixed Private Investment: Evidence From Selected G7 Countries, Abdur Chowdhury, Mark Wheeler Nov 2013

(Wp 2013-06) The Impact Of Output And Exchange Rate Volatility On Fixed Private Investment: Evidence From Selected G7 Countries, Abdur Chowdhury, Mark Wheeler

Economics Working Papers

This study examines the impact of shocks to exchange rate and output uncertainty (volatility) on real private fixed investment (FI) in Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The analysis is conducted using vector autoregressive models that contain the price level, real output, the volatility of real output, the real exchange rate, the volatility of the real exchange rate, an interest rate, and FI. The results yield important public policy implications with regard to the impact of output volatility of FI. Our analysis indicates that volatility shocks, measured as output volatility or exchange rate volatility, do not have …

(Wp 2013-07) Terms Of Trade Shocks And Private Savings In The Developing Countries, Abdur Chowdhury Nov 2013

(Wp 2013-07) Terms Of Trade Shocks And Private Savings In The Developing Countries, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Working Papers

Economic agents in the developing countries are subject to tight credit constraints, which are more pronounced during bad state of nature. Thus, adverse shocks to commodity prices in the world market can force them to reduce savings by a larger amount than they would otherwise have. Empirical analysis using a dynamic GMM model and data from 45 developing countries confirm that most of the determinants of savings identified in the literature also apply to the developing countries. The transitory component in the terms of trade have a larger positive impact than the permanent component. This reflects the lack of access …

(Wp 2013-08) Economic (In)Security And Gender Differences In Trade Policy Attitudes, Jeffrey Drope, Abdur Chowdhury Nov 2013

(Wp 2013-08) Economic (In)Security And Gender Differences In Trade Policy Attitudes, Jeffrey Drope, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Working Papers

Over time and across countries, researchers have noted frequent and mostly unexplained gender differences in the levels of support for policies of free or freer trade: women tend to be less favorable toward policies of liberalizing trade than men. Yet, no well substantiated theoretical or empirical account of the gender component of trade attitudes has emerged. Using an economic security explanation based principally on a mobile factors approach, we find that it is not women generally who are more negative toward trade but particularly economically vulnerable women – i.e. women from the scarce labor factor. We utilize recent survey data …

Rti Characteristics Commonly Implemented In High Performing Middle Schools, Mark Joseph Fitch Nov 2013

Rti Characteristics Commonly Implemented In High Performing Middle Schools, Mark Joseph Fitch

Dissertations

The Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2004 allowed schools to use a Response to Intervention (RtI) model as opposed to the discrepancy model to qualify students as learning disabled. The incorporation of the RtI model provided earlier interventions for students and reduced avoidance of special services and false diagnosis. With the success of the RtI model at the elementary level, middle schools attempt to implement the program with varying success. In this study, middle school principals were surveyed to determine their respective building’s current level of implementation in regard to RtI. The building’s implementation scores were compared to academic achievement …

Case Study Of The Voluntary Student Transfer Program: The Perspectives Of African American Students And Parent Participants In One Midwestern School District, Rosalyn Harper Goodwin Nov 2013

Case Study Of The Voluntary Student Transfer Program: The Perspectives Of African American Students And Parent Participants In One Midwestern School District, Rosalyn Harper Goodwin

Dissertations

This study investigated the perspectives of four students and 6 parent participants of the Voluntary Student Transfer program, an inter-district desegregation program that involves transporting African American students from urban area schools to surrounding county schools. Due to limited and dated research related to the Voluntary Student Transfer (VST) program, the researcher employed a qualitative collective case study framework which included a semi-structured interview protocol and questionnaires to gather perceptual data of parent and student participants of the program. The collective case studies revealed that parent and student participants of the VST program were satisfied with the program overall had …

Icaverns: Interpretation, There\'S An App For That!, National Cave And Karst Research Institute

KIP Articles

A quarter of a century ago, cave and karst resources were declared irreplaceable with the passing of the Federal Cave Resources Protection Act. Yet, today, few understand the importance or fragility of these resources. Human interactions in karst areas make these resources highly susceptible to damage. Nonpersonal interpretation digital media products could serve as an important tool to bridge this informational gap. Worldwide, there are hundreds of parks or park- like attractions focusing on cave, spring, or sinkhole resources. Their visitors have a built-in curiosity about these places. Engaging this audience in interpretive programming could greatly increase their speleological knowledge. …

Horizontal Collaborative E-Purchasing For Hospitals: It For Addressing Collaborative Purchasing Impediments, Robbert J. G. Kusters, Johan Versendaal Nov 2013

Horizontal Collaborative E-Purchasing For Hospitals: It For Addressing Collaborative Purchasing Impediments, Robbert J. G. Kusters, Johan Versendaal

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Horizontal collaborative purchasing (HCP) has often been cited as a way for hospitals to address the challenges of the rising healthcare costs. However, hospitals do not seem to utilize horizontal collaborative purchasing on any large scale, and recent initiatives have had mixed results. Focusing on Dutch hospitals, in this paper we present major impediments for collaborative purchasing, resulting in a first component of our proposed electronic horizontal collaborative purchasing model for hospitals; as a second component it contains a collaborative purchasing typology. A first validation round with hospital purchasing professionals, described separately in Kusters and Versendaal (2011), confirmed four applicable …

Top Management Support, Collective Mindfulness, And Information Systems Performance, Shaji A. Khan, Albert L. Lederer, Dinesh A. Mirchandani

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Mindfulness is a cognitive process that facilitates the discovery and correction of errors that might escalate. This study applies mindfulness theory to examine the impact of top management support for information systems on collective mindfulness, and that of collective mindfulness on IS performance. It treated such mindfulness in five dimensions, and top management support and IS performance as uni-dimensional. Forty-seven chief executive officers responded to a survey asking their perceptions of the constructs. Top management support predicted four of the dimensions with the strongest effect on sensitivity to IS operations. A negative path from support to commitment to IS resilience …

Election Law Pleading, Joshua A. Douglas Nov 2013

Election Law Pleading, Joshua A. Douglas

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This Article explores how the Supreme Court’s recent pleading decisions in Twombly and Iqbal have impacted election litigation. It explains how Twombly and Iqbal’s “factual plausibility” standard usually does not help in an election case, because there is often little factual dispute regarding the operation of the election practice. Instead, the real question in a motion to dismiss is whether the plaintiff has stated a viable cause of action against the government defendant who is administering the election. But Twombly and Iqbal’s rule does not assist in answering this question. That is, Twombly and Iqbal are incongruent with …

Optimal Sup-Norm Rates, Adaptivity And Inference In Nonparametric Instrumental Variables Estimation, Xiaohong Chen, Timothy M. Christensen Nov 2013

Optimal Sup-Norm Rates, Adaptivity And Inference In Nonparametric Instrumental Variables Estimation, Xiaohong Chen, Timothy M. Christensen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper makes several contributions to the literature on the important yet difficult problem of estimating functions nonparametrically using instrumental variables. First, we derive the minimax optimal sup-norm convergence rates for nonparametric instrumental variables (NPIV) estimation of the structural function h 0 and its derivatives. Second, we show that a computationally simple sieve NPIV estimator can attain the optimal sup-norm rates for h 0 and its derivatives when h 0 is approximated via a spline or wavelet sieve. Our optimal sup-norm rates surprisingly coincide with the optimal L 2 -norm rates for severely ill-posed problems, and are only up to …

New Goodness-Of-Fit Diagnostics For Conditional Discrete Response Models, Igor Kheifets, Carlos Velasco Nov 2013

New Goodness-Of-Fit Diagnostics For Conditional Discrete Response Models, Igor Kheifets, Carlos Velasco

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper proposes new specification tests for conditional models with discrete responses, which are key to apply efficient maximum likelihood methods, to obtain consistent estimates of partial effects and to get appropriate predictions of the probability of future events. In particular, we test the static and dynamic ordered choice model specifications and can cover infinite support distributions for e.g. count data. The traditional approach for specification testing of discrete response models is based on probability integral transforms of a jittered discrete data which leads to continuous uniform iid series under the true conditional distribution. Then, standard specification testing techniques for …

The following three studies were presented at the Conference of Interpreter Trainers Conference in October 2012. The studies were undertaken as predissertation work by students in the first cohort of the doctoral program in the Department of Interpretation at Gallaudet University. In the first study, Erica Alley addresses the population of students of American Sign Language–English interpretation in the United States who are employed in the video relay service (VRS) industry while pursuing their degree. It is proposed that VRS is changing from a specialization to an introduction to the field of interpreting and that students may find comfort in …

Fairness Through The Lens Of Cooperative Game Theory: An Experimental Approach, Geoffroy De Clippel, Kareen Rozen Nov 2013

Fairness Through The Lens Of Cooperative Game Theory: An Experimental Approach, Geoffroy De Clippel, Kareen Rozen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper experimentally investigates cooperative game theory from a normative perspective. Subjects designated as Decision Makers express their view on what is fair for others, by recommending a payoff allocation for three subjects (Recipients) whose substitutabilities and complementarities are captured by a characteristic function. We show that axioms and solution concepts from cooperative game theory provide valuable insights into the data. Axiomatic and regression analysis suggest that Decision Makers’ choices can be (noisily) described as a convex combination of the Shapley value and equal split solution. A mixture model analysis, examining the distribution of Just Deserts indices describing how far …

Inference On Optimal Treatment Assignments, Timothy B. Armstrong, Shu Shen Nov 2013

Inference On Optimal Treatment Assignments, Timothy B. Armstrong, Shu Shen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider inference on optimal treatment assignments. Our methods are the first to allow for inference on the treatment assignment rule that would be optimal given knowledge of the population treatment effect in a general setting. The procedure uses multiple hypothesis testing methods to determine a subset of the population for which assignment to treatment can be determined to be optimal after conditioning on all available information, with a prespecified level of confidence. A monte carlo study confirms that the procedure has good small sample behavior. We apply the method to the Mexican conditional cash transfer program Progresa. We demonstrate …
