An Interface-Capturing Regularization Method For Solving The Equations For Two-Fluid Mixtures, Jian Du, Robert D. Guy, Aaron L. Fogelson, Grady B. Wright, James P. Keener Nov 2013

An Interface-Capturing Regularization Method For Solving The Equations For Two-Fluid Mixtures, Jian Du, Robert D. Guy, Aaron L. Fogelson, Grady B. Wright, James P. Keener

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many problems in biology involve gels which are mixtures composed of a polymer network permeated by a fluid solvent (water). The two-fluid model is a widely used approach to described gel mechanics, in which both network and solvent coexist at each point of space and their relative abundance is described by their volume fractions. Each phase is modeled as a continuum with its own velocity and constitutive law. In some biological applications, free boundaries separate regions of gel and regions of pure solvent, resulting in a degenerate network momentum equation where the network volume fraction vanishes. To overcome this difficulty, …

Chikuni Parish Taonga Agro-Forestry Program Assessment, Jack Bird Nov 2013

Chikuni Parish Taonga Agro-Forestry Program Assessment, Jack Bird

Miller Center Fellowship

The research of the agro-forestry program was done for the purpose of compiling and organizing the different components of the program itself into a comprehensive guide. The guide is intended to be used as a foundation for future development of a full-fledged agro-forestry curriculum. This assessment takes the research one step further by analyzing the current state of affairs for the agro-forestry program. While the guide presented a full range of concepts, this assessment will analyze where the strengths and weakness lay within the content and the structure of CPT itself.

Chikuni Parish Taonga: Iri School Assessment & Recommendations, Lynsey Cumberford-Palmer, Laura Ruggles

Miller Center Fellowship

The Fellows research accomplished three objectives in order to improve the Chikuni Parish Taonga (CPT) program. The first objective was to understand the barriers to education. The Fellows conducted surveys to discover what teachers and community members thought were the biggest obstacles to keep children from going to school. Understanding the root causes of school absenteeism is the first step to fixing it. The second goal was to outline and understand the training and monitoring system of both the schools and the mentors. The third goal was to find the best ways to support the mentors, schools, and communities to …

Correspondence And Covariation: Quantities Changing Together, Caro C. Williams-Pierce Nov 2013

Correspondence And Covariation: Quantities Changing Together, Caro C. Williams-Pierce

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship

Exponential functions are important topic in school algebra and in higher mathematics, but research on students’ thinking suggests that understanding exponential growth remains an instructional challenge. This paper reports the results of a small-scale teaching experiment with students who explored exponential functions in the context of two continuously covarying quantities, height and time. We present two major conceptual paths that occurred in the development of an understanding of exponential growth, the covariation view and the correspondence view, and discuss the influence of each perspective on the growth of students’ understanding.

Educating Highly‐Qualified Science Teachers, Elizabeth Lewis, Aaron A. Musson, Jia Lu Nov 2013

Educating Highly‐Qualified Science Teachers, Elizabeth Lewis, Aaron A. Musson, Jia Lu

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Understanding what makes a highly‐qualified science teacher requires careful research on teacher education programs. Existing research pertaining to secondary science preservice teachers (PSTs) is limited in the areas of: (a) mastery of subject matter knowledge; (b) evolving teaching selfefficacy, and (c) inquiry‐based enacted curricular practices. We studied each issue over the course of an intensive, 14‐month, graduate teacher certification program for practicing scientists and recent science graduates. First, we asked if there was a relationship between amount of content area undergraduate coursework and performance (GPA in core content courses) and found an expected, yet preliminary, connection between higher undergraduate GPA …

Dinosaurs And Pterosaurs In Greek And Roman Art And Literature? An Investigation Of Young-Earth Creationist Claims, Phil Senter Nov 2013

Dinosaurs And Pterosaurs In Greek And Roman Art And Literature? An Investigation Of Young-Earth Creationist Claims, Phil Senter

Biological Science Faculty Working Papers

Many young-Earth creationist (YEC) authors claim that ancient Greek and Roman writings describe dinosaurs and pterosaurs, and that Greco-Roman art illustrates Mesozoic reptiles. Such claims are used as "evidence" against evolutionary theory in an attempt to cast doubt on the separation of humans and such animals by millions of years. However, examination of the Greco-Roman materials in question reveals that none of them actually depict Mesozoic reptiles. In descriptions of "dragons" (Greek drakōn; Latin draco) in Greco-Roman literature—which YEC authors claim are dinosaurs—coils and the epithets ophis, serpens, and anguis reveal that the ancient authors are describing …

Harmonic Generation Spectroscopy With A Two-Colour Laser Field Having Orthogonal Linear Polarizations, T. S. Sarantseva, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, M. Yu. Ivanov, Anthony F. Starace Nov 2013

Harmonic Generation Spectroscopy With A Two-Colour Laser Field Having Orthogonal Linear Polarizations, T. S. Sarantseva, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, M. Yu. Ivanov, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The interpretation of many high-order harmonic generation (HHG) experiments is based on the assumption that the HHG yield of an atom can be factorized into (i) a laser-dependent ‘electron wave packet’ with rather simple properties, including a nearly universal shape, and (ii) an atomic photorecombination cross section. We show that this factorization is restricted to linearly polarized laser fields and fails in two-colour laser fields with orthogonal polarizations. At the same time, we show how two-colour HHG spectroscopy using orthogonally polarized intense fundamental and relatively weak second harmonic fields makes a complete experiment possible that enables the retrieval of the …

An Argument Against Open-File Discovery In Criminal Cases, Brian P. Fox Nov 2013

An Argument Against Open-File Discovery In Criminal Cases, Brian P. Fox

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note argues that, for the most part, open-file discovery proponents fail to recognize the added burden that defense counsel would face under a regime in which all items of the prosecution’s evidence are available for investigation by the defense. This is particularly true in the eighty to ninety percent of criminal cases where the defendant is indigent, and the court appointed defense counsel is operating under strict resource constraints.

This Note also argues that advocates of open-file discovery fail to recognize that in the majority of cases involving prosecutorial misconduct, the prosecutor’s intentional wrongdoing will be sufficient to overshadow …

High-Resolution Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Of Hd 100546. Ii. Analysis Of Variable Rovibrational Co Emission Lines, Sean D. Brittain, Joan Najita, John S. Carr, Joseph Liskowsky, Matthew R. Troutman, Greg W. Doppmann

Publications

We present observations of rovibrational CO in HD 100546 from four epochs spanning 2003 January through 2010 December. We show that the equivalent widths of the CO lines vary during this time period with the v = 1–0 CO lines brightening more than the UV fluoresced lines from the higher vibrational states. While the spectroastrometric signal of the hot band lines remains constant during this period, the spectroastrometric signal of the v = 1–0 lines varies substantially. At all epochs, the spectroastrometric signals of the UV fluoresced lines are consistent with the signal one would expect from gas in an axisymmetric …

Context. Circumstellar discs are ubiquitous around young stars, but rapidly dissipate their gas and dust on timescales of a few Myr. The Herschel Space Observatory allows for the study of the warm disc atmosphere, using far-infrared spectroscopy to measure gas content and excitation conditions, and far-IR photometry to constrain the dust distribution. Aims. We aim to detect and characterize the gas content of circumstellar discs in four targets as part of the Herschel science demonstration phase. Methods. We carried out sensitive medium resolution spectroscopy and high sensitivity photometry at λ ∼60–190 μm using the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer instrument …

We explored a system that constructs environment-centered frames of reference and coordinates memory for the azimuth of an object in an enclosed space. For one group, we provided two environmental cues (doors): one in the front, and one in the rear. For a second group, we provided two object cues: a front and a rear cue.For a third group, we provided no external cues; we assumed that for this group, their reference frames would be determined by the orthogonal geometry of the floor-and-wall junction that divides a space in half or into multiple territories along the horizontal …

A Regime Shift From Macrophyte To Phytoplankton Dominance Enhances Carbon Burial In A Shallow, Eutrophic Lake, Soren Brothers, Sabine Hilt, Katrin Attermeyer, Hans Peter Grossart, Sarian Kosten, Betty Lischke, Thomas Mehner, Nils Meyer, Kristin Scharnweber, Jan Kohler

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Ecological regime shifts and carbon cycling in aquatic systems have both been subject to increasing attention in recent years, yet the direct connection between these topics has remained poorly understood. A four-fold increase in sedimentation rates was observed within the past 50 years in a shallow eutrophic lake with no surface in- or outflows. This change coincided with an ecological regime shift involving the complete loss of submerged macrophytes, leading to a more turbid, phytoplankton- dominated state. To determine whether the increase in carbon (C) burial resulted from a comprehensive transformation of C cycling pathways in parallel to this regime …

Teaching Behavior And Well-Being In Students: Development And Concurrent Validity Of An Instrument To Measure Student-Reported Teaching Behavior, Patrick Pössel, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill, Jill L. Adelson, Annie C. Bjerg, Don T. Wooldridge, Stephanie Winkeljohn Black Nov 2013

Wooldridge, Stephanie Winkeljohn Black

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Teaching behavior has important implications for students’ emotional well-being. Multiple models suggest students’ perceptions of teaching behaviors are more critical than other measures for predicting well-being, yet student-report instruments that measure concrete and specific teaching behavior are limited. The purpose of the present studies is to develop an instrument to assess students’ perceptions of concrete and specific teaching behavior and to test which teaching behavior is associated students’ well-being. Construct validity and internal consistency for the 37-item Teaching Behavior Questionnaire (TBQ-S), composed of instructional, negative teaching, socioemotional, and organizational behavior were examined using data from two independent samples (Study 1: …

Disentangling Demand-Enhancing And Trade-Cost Effects Of Maximum Residue Regulations, Bo Xiong, John Beghin Nov 2013

Disentangling Demand-Enhancing And Trade-Cost Effects Of Maximum Residue Regulations, Bo Xiong, John Beghin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Maximum residue levels (MRLs) regulations in plant products can create unnecessary trade barriers on one hand and enhance demand via risk mitigation or quality assurance on the other. We stipulate a generalized gravity equation model to disentangle the effects of MRLs on the import demand and foreign exporters’ supply. Applying the framework to the MRLs on pesticides imposed by high-income OECD countries, we find that the MRLs jointly enhance the import demand and hinder foreign exporters’ supply. In addition, exporters from the less and least developed countries are more constrained by the MRLs than their competitors from the developed world.

Isosteric And Nonisosteric Base Pairs In Rna Motifs: Molecular Dynamics And Bioinformatics Study Of The Sarcin–Ricin Internal Loop, Marek Havrila, Kamila RéBlová, Craig L. Zirbel, Neocles B. Leontis, JiřÍ ŠPoner

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The sarcin-ricin RNA motif (SR motif) is one of the most prominent recurrent RNA building blocks that occurs in many different RNA contexts and folds autonomously, that is, in a context-independent manner. In this study, we combined bioinformatics analysis with explicit-solvent molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to better understand the relation between the RNA sequence and the evolutionary patterns of the SR motif. A SHAPE probing experiment was also performed to confirm the fidelity of the MD simulations. We identified 57 instances of the SR motif in a nonredundant subset of the RNA X-ray structure database and analyzed their base pairing, …

Practical Alternatives For Silvicultural Pollution Reduction In Light Of Decker V. Nedc, Erin Anderson Nov 2013

Practical Alternatives For Silvicultural Pollution Reduction In Light Of Decker V. Nedc, Erin Anderson

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Decker v. Northwest Environmental Defense Center is a recently decided Supreme Court case that originated in the forests of Oregon. Frustrated by the level of pollution in Oregon rivers that was originating from logging roads, an environmental group sued the State to enforce the Clean Water Act and require Oregon to issue National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits for the pollution. The Supreme Court held that the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to exclude water pollution from logging roads from NPDES permitting was entitled to deference, reversing the Ninth Circuit’s decision that such pollution required NPDES permits under the …

The Columbia River Treaty's Canadian Entitlement: The Role Of Liberalized And Integrated North American Electricity Markets In A New Calculation, Kevin Kirkpatrick Nov 2013

The Columbia River Treaty's Canadian Entitlement: The Role Of Liberalized And Integrated North American Electricity Markets In A New Calculation, Kevin Kirkpatrick

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

The Columbia River Treaty between the United States and Canada may be terminated unilaterally by either nation beginning next year; this has brough attention within the Pacific Northwest and beyond to the 1964 agreement on river flows. Much of the discussion about updating the accord highlights important goals such as bettering the protection of fish and increasing public participation in ecosystem governance, but often neglects analysis of how electricity markets have changed over the past fifty years. This Comment, through an examination of key developments in utilities law and application of economic theory, attempts to parse principles that may prove …

Which Company Do I Work For? Organizational Identification In Third Party Organizations, Angela Dawson Nov 2013

Which Company Do I Work For? Organizational Identification In Third Party Organizations, Angela Dawson

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

Organizational communication influences organizational culture and identity, as well as employee identification with an organization. Even though extant literature on organizational culture, identity, and identification explains how these topics occur and relate within organizations, we know less about how employees develop identification to the culture specifically from the third party companies. The purpose of this study is to explore how a third party organization, “One Corporation,” communicates its organizational culture and identity to its employees and how the messages communicated by “One Corporation” influence employee identification. The researcher utilizes thematic analysis of organizational documents, face-to-face interviews, and participant observation for …

Protargol Synthesis: An In-House Protocol, Xuming Pan, William A. Bourland, Weibo Song

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The protargol staining method has proved to be indispensable for revealing the cellular structures of a variety of protozoa, especially the flagellates and ciliates. Protargol provides permanent stains of a variety of cellular structures: nuclei, extrusomes, basal bodies, and microfilamentous constituents of cells. Together with the older silver nitrate methods, protargol impregnations have provided the basis for the detailed descriptions of nearly all ciliates to date. The performance of commercially available preparations has varied widely. Recently, suppliers have stopped stocking the effective forms of protargol resulting in a worldwide shortage. Thus, it has become necessary for protistologists to explore on-site …
