Adaptive Regret Minimization In Bounded-Memory Games, Jeremiah Blocki, Nicolas Christin, Anupam Datta, Arunesh Sinha Nov 2013

Adaptive Regret Minimization In Bounded-Memory Games, Jeremiah Blocki, Nicolas Christin, Anupam Datta, Arunesh Sinha

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Organizations that collect and use large volumes of personal information often use security audits to protect data subjects from inappropriate uses of this information by authorized insiders. In face of unknown incentives of employees, a reasonable audit strategy for the organization is one that minimizes its regret. While regret minimization has been extensively studied in repeated games, the standard notion of regret for repeated games cannot capture the complexity of the interaction between the organization (defender) and an adversary, which arises from dependence of rewards and actions on history. To account for this generality, we introduce a richer class of …

Predictive Value Of Nuclear Excision Repair Genes For Cancer Survival, George R. Simon, Gerold Bepler Nov 2013

Predictive Value Of Nuclear Excision Repair Genes For Cancer Survival, George R. Simon, Gerold Bepler

USF Patents

Patients who have their cancer surgically removed are at risk for recurrence, even though currently free of disease. Lung cancer patients with higher activity of a nuclear excision repair gene called ERCC1 were at a lower risk for recurrence than patients with lower activity of ERCC1. Hence, it is possible to predict which patients are at a higher risk for recurrence after resection. This information can be used to design treatment strategies for patients determined to be at a higher risk for recurrence. Additionally, patients who are lower risk for recurrence can be saved the morbidity of further treatment.

Troika Of Single Particle Tracking Programing: Snr Enhancement, Particle Identification, And Mapping, Lydia Kisley Nov 2013

Troika Of Single Particle Tracking Programing: Snr Enhancement, Particle Identification, And Mapping, Lydia Kisley

Faculty Scholarship

Single particle tracking (SPT) techniques provide a microscopic approach to probe in vivo and in vitro structure and reactions. Automatic analysis of SPT data with high efficiency and accuracy spurs the development of SPT algorithms. In this perspective, we review a range of available techniques used in SPT analysis programs. In addition, we present an example SPT program step-by-step to provide a guide so that researchers can use, modify, and/or write a SPT program for their own purposes. © 2014 the Owner Societies.

The Composite Effect For Inverted Faces Is Reliable At Large Sample Sizes And Requires The Basic Face Configuration, Tirta Susilo, Constantin Rezlescu, Bradley Duchaine Nov 2013

The Composite Effect For Inverted Faces Is Reliable At Large Sample Sizes And Requires The Basic Face Configuration, Tirta Susilo, Constantin Rezlescu, Bradley Duchaine

Dartmouth Scholarship

Abstract The absence of the face composite effect (FCE) for inverted faces is often considered evidence that holistic processing operates only on upright faces. However, such absence might be explained by power issues: Most studies that have failed to find the inverted FCE tested 24 participants or less. Here we find that the inverted FCE exists reliably when we tested at least 60 participants. The inverted FCE was ∼ 18% the size of the upright FCE, and it was unaffected by testing order: It did not matter whether participants did the upright condition first (Experiment 1, n = 64) or …

Automatic Sharing Classification And Timely Push For Cache-Coherent Systems, Malek Musleh, Vijay Pai Nov 2013

Automatic Sharing Classification And Timely Push For Cache-Coherent Systems, Malek Musleh, Vijay Pai

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper proposes and evaluates Sharing/Timing Adaptive Push (STAP), a dynamic scheme for preemptively sending data from producers to consumers to minimize criticalpath communication latency. STAP uses small hardware buffers to dynamically detect sharing patterns and timing requirements. The scheme applies to both intra-node and inter-socket directorybased shared memory networks. We integrate STAP into a MOESI cache-coherence protocol using heuristics to detect different data sharing patterns, including broadcasts, producer/consumer, and migratory-data sharing. Using 12 benchmarks from the PARSEC and SPLASH-2 suites in 3 different configurations, we show that our scheme significantly reduces communication latency in NUMA systems and achieves an …

Understanding Long-Term Changes In Species Abundance Using A Niche-Based Approach, P Helaouët, G Beaugrand, M Edwards Nov 2013

Understanding Long-Term Changes In Species Abundance Using A Niche-Based Approach, P Helaouët, G Beaugrand, M Edwards

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

One of the major challenges to understanding population changes in ecology for assessment purposes is the difficulty in evaluating the suitability of an area for a given species. Here we used a new simple approach able to faithfully predict through time the abundance of two key zooplanktonic species by focusing on the relationship between the species' environmental preferences and their observed abundances. The approach is applied to the marine copepods Calanus finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus as a case study characterising the multidecadal dynamics of the North Sea ecosystem. We removed all North Sea data from the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) …

Mentoring As It Relates To Persistence In Associate Degree Nursing Students, Caroline M. Peltz Nov 2013

Mentoring As It Relates To Persistence In Associate Degree Nursing Students, Caroline M. Peltz

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Students who are preparing to become registered nurses are more likely to attend community colleges due to the unequal distribution of financial resources to educational systems that have evolved from the impact of globalization. The purpose of this descriptive cross-sectional study was to increase the understanding of mentoring as it relates to the perceived ability to persist among nontraditional students enrolled in associate degree nursing programs at community colleges. This investigation presented a discussion of how student involvement in a mentoring relationship and the domains of mentoring differed by student background characteristics. Additionally, the domains of mentoring and student involvement …

Reconsidering The Relationship Between Generic And Situated Il Approaches: The Dreyfus Model Of Skill Acquisition In Formal Information Literacy Learning Environments, Part Ii, Robert Farrell Nov 2013

Reconsidering The Relationship Between Generic And Situated Il Approaches: The Dreyfus Model Of Skill Acquisition In Formal Information Literacy Learning Environments, Part Ii, Robert Farrell

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This is the second of two papers discussing the application of Berkeley phenomenologist Hubert Dreyfus’ five-stage model of skill acquisition to information literacy (IL) theory and practice. This second paper will consider in detail how Dreyfus’ model might be used by academic librarians to scaffold information literacy learning opportunities that foster students’ development of information behaviors characteristic of experts within various disciplinary contexts. The article draws on several of the models mentioned in the previous article as well as representative works in the IL field that have put forward instructional activities and pedagogical strategies both for teaching generic IL skills …

A Unique Support For Sexual-Minority Identity Development: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of A Long-Term Formal Mentoring Relationship Between An Adult And A Youth From The Gay Community, Christian L. Rummell Nov 2013

A Unique Support For Sexual-Minority Identity Development: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of A Long-Term Formal Mentoring Relationship Between An Adult And A Youth From The Gay Community, Christian L. Rummell

Dissertations and Theses

An important need exists to build a baseline understanding of the phenomenon of formal mentoring relationships involving adults and youth from the gay community. During the formative years when gay adolescents navigate through the process of understanding, defining, accepting, and sharing their identity as a sexual minority, they are often faced with high levels of environmental risks, including victimization, stress, and negative social sanctions by others. Formal mentoring has been recommended as a potential strategy to offer unique one-to-one support to gay youth that can help to foster resilience and a range of positive outcomes, including strengthening processes involved in …

Large-Scale Statistical Modelling Via Machine Learning Classifiers, Christina Parpoula, Krystallenia Drosou, Christos Koukouvinos Nov 2013

Large-Scale Statistical Modelling Via Machine Learning Classifiers, Christina Parpoula, Krystallenia Drosou, Christos Koukouvinos

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The problem of statistical modelling and identifying the significant variables in large data sets is common nowadays. This paper deals with the statistical analysis of two large dimensional data sets; we firstly conduct a seismic hazard sensitivity analysis using seismic data from Greece acquired during the years 1962−2003, and then analyze Trauma data collected in an annual registry conducted during the year 2005 by the Hellenic Trauma and Emergency Surgery Society involving 30 General Hospitals in Greece. The main purpose of both analyses is to extract high-level knowledge for the domain user or decision-maker. Eight non parametric classifiers derived from …
