A Data-Based Method For Harmonising Heterogeneous Data Modelling Techniques Across Data Mining Applications, Kassim S. Mwitondi, Raed A. T. Said
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
We propose an iterative graphical data visualisation algorithm for optimal model selection. The algorithm is implemented on three domain-partitioning techniques - decision trees, neural networks and support vector machines. Each model is trained and tested on the Pima Indians and Bupa Liver Disorders datasets with the performance being assessed in a multi-step process. Firstly, the conventional ROC curves and the Youden Indexare applied to determine the optimal model then sequential moving differences involving the fitted parameters - true and false positives – are extracted and their respective probability density estimations are used to track their variability using the proposed algorithm. …

On Characterizations Of Exponential Distribution Through Order Statistics And Record Values With Random Shifts, M. Ahsanullah, Imtiyaz A. Shah, George P. Yanev
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Distributional relations of the form Y d= X +T where X, Y, and T are record values or order statistics and the random translator T is independent from X are considered. Characterizations of the exponential distribution when the ordered random variables are non-neighboring are proved. Corollaries for Pareto and power function distributions are also derived.

In the premature infant, somatosensory and visual stimuli trigger an immature electroencephalographic (EEG) pattern, “delta-brushes,” in the corresponding sensory cortical areas. Whether auditory stimuli evoke delta-brushes in the premature auditory cortex has not been reported. Here, responses to auditory stimuli were studied in 46 premature infants without neurologic risk aged 31 to 38 postmenstrual weeks (PMW) during routine EEG recording. Stimuli consisted of either low-volume technogenic “clicks” near the background noise level of the neonatal care unit, or a human voice at conversational sound level. Stimuli were administrated pseudo-randomly during quiet and active sleep. In another protocol, the cortical response …
Memorandum: Calibration Of Great Bay Estuary Hydrodynamic Model And Incremental Nitrogen Estimation, Thomas W. Gallagher, Cristhian Mancilla
Memorandum: Calibration Of Great Bay Estuary Hydrodynamic Model And Incremental Nitrogen Estimation, Thomas W. Gallagher, Cristhian Mancilla
PREP Reports & Publications
This technical memorandum summarizes the completion of the calibration of a hydrodynamic model of the Great Bay Estuary System (GBES) originally started as part of the Squamscott River modeling study. The Squamscott River modeling study was discontinued when it was realized that excessive levels of algae in the Exeter wastewater lagoons discharge had a significant effect on Squamscott River water quality. Because Exeter plans to upgrade its wastewater treatment system and eliminate excessive algal levels in its effluent discharge, it was decided not to develop a hydrodynamic water quality model with Squamscott River water quality data that is so atypical …
Limits On Violations Of Lorentz Symmetry From Gravity Probe B, Quentin G. Bailey, Ryan D. Everett, James M. Overduin
Limits On Violations Of Lorentz Symmetry From Gravity Probe B, Quentin G. Bailey, Ryan D. Everett, James M. Overduin
Physics & Astronomy - Prescott
Generic violations of Lorentz symmetry can be described by an effective field theory framework that contains both general relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics called the Standard-Model extension (SME). We obtain new constraints on the gravitational sector of the SME using recently published final results from Gravity Probe B. These include for the first time an upper limit at the 10_3 level on the time-time component of the new tensor field responsible for inducing local Lorentz violation in the theory, and an independent limit at the 10_7 level on a combination of components of this tensor field.

Microrna-138 Regulates Hypoxia-Induced Endothelial Cell Dysfunction By Targeting S100a1., Anagha Sen, Shumei Ren, Carolin Lerchenmüller, Jianxin Sun, Norbert Weiss, Patrick Most, Karsten Peppel
Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
The Ca(2+) sensor S100A1 is essential for proper endothelial cell (EC) nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) activation. S100A1 levels are greatly reduced in primary human microvascular ECs subjected to hypoxia, rendering them dysfunctional. However mechanisms that regulate S100A1 levels in ECs are unknown. Here we show that ECs transfected with a S100A1-3' untranslated region (UTR) luciferase reporter construct display significantly reduced gene expression when subjected to low oxygen levels or chemical hypoxia. Bioinformatic analysis suggested that microRNA -138 (MiR-138) could target the 3'UTR of S100A1. Patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) or mice subjected to femoral artery resection (FAR) displayed …

The Impact Of Downsizing And Efficiency Measures On Anti-Fraud Resources, Marek Palasinski
The Impact Of Downsizing And Efficiency Measures On Anti-Fraud Resources, Marek Palasinski
The Qualitative Report
The main purpose of this study was to explore the impact of downsizing and efficiency measures on two key elements of operational performance - fraud detection and fraud reporting. Qualitative data were obtained from ethnographic observations of two major multinational insurance companies, which were already examined before the Global Financial Crisis, and subjected to an inter - and intra - business comparative analysis of anti - fraud resources. The paper points out a big discrepancy in opinions on the downsizing effects between junior staff and their supervisors. Whereas the latter present them as enabling the business to deal with suspicious …
Knowledge-Based Feature Extraction And Spectral Image Enhancement From Remotely Sensed Images, Weihua Sun
Knowledge-Based Feature Extraction And Spectral Image Enhancement From Remotely Sensed Images, Weihua Sun
Theses
Scene development plays the first step for synthetic image generation using DIRSIG (The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation Model). Traditionally the scenes are built manually; the procedure is very time consuming especially for complex urban scenes. The research focuses on contributing to the DIRSIG scene model development based on information retrieval from high-resolution multispectral images, such as WorldView-2 sensor imagery. The proposed approach takes advantage of a sequence of image processing routines to enhance the spectral images and extracts key geographical features for the man-made road network and naturally occurring water bodies. These routines take into account the …

It is well established that male rats have an advantage in acquiring place-learning strategies, allowing them to learn spatial tasks more readily than female rats. However many of these differences have been examined solely during acquisition or in 24h memory retention. Here, we investigated whether sex differences exist in remote long-term memory, lasting 30d after training, and whether there are differences in the expression pattern of molecular markers associated with long-term memory maintenance. Specifically, we analyzed the expression of protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ) and the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor subunit GluA2. To adequately evaluate memory retention, we used a …
Beauty In A Crooked Line, Sarah Ramey
Beauty In A Crooked Line, Sarah Ramey
Theses and Dissertations
Experimentation is the beginning and end of all of my art. I examine the interactions of the materials that are involved in the journey of creativity. Typically, I begin a piece with an irregularly drawn line, using a white crayon to resist the media that I will later apply, thereby creating a negative line. This gestural line becomes an element that helps direct my intuitive mark-making. My process involves masking, using resists, and layering materials. I then remove the layers of media by scraping or sanding them away changing the texture of the paper. I am drawn to media that …

Experiences Of Community College Vocational Students Who Were Required To Begin Their Studies By Taking Remedial Courses And Successfully Attained Their Associate’S Degrees: A Phenomenological Study, Amy Margaret Morrison Goings
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Great Recession and national skills gap crisis have reframed community college efforts to shift from access-based institutions to that of persistence and completion-focused colleges. Within the post-recession context, this research examines what success looks like for today’s vocational community college student, as well as the current research on the barriers to completion. This qualitative, phenomenological study will explore the experiences of community college students who are graduating with vocational degrees and how they overcame known barriers to complete their degrees. In addition to summarizing the responses to each of the sub-questions, three primary themes emerged from the research that …
Why Do Teachers Hate Ai N'T? Eighteenth-Century Ideologies And Attitudes In Twenty-First-Century Classrooms, Robin Elise Halsey
Why Do Teachers Hate Ai N'T? Eighteenth-Century Ideologies And Attitudes In Twenty-First-Century Classrooms, Robin Elise Halsey
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the impact of various historical events on the development of the English language and its grammar. Specifically, this project highlights how the ideologies about language held by eighteenth-century grammar-writers have influenced the pedagogical approach of teachers of English, persisting into the twenty-first century. Further, the rationale behind these language ideologies is explored in order to gain important insights into the seemingly prescriptive nature of the majority of grammar texts produced in the eighteenth century and beyond.
The origins of four particular points of grammar and usage that are commonly attacked by teachers, grammarians, and others are examined. …

A Deal Is A Deal: Plea Bargains And Double Jeopardy After Ohio V. Johnson, Philip Chinn
A Deal Is A Deal: Plea Bargains And Double Jeopardy After Ohio V. Johnson, Philip Chinn
Seattle University Law Review
The Double Jeopardy Clause provides that no person will “be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb.” On March 10, 2004, Pedro Cabrera made a statement that cost him fourteen years of his life: he proclaimed his innocence. The court accepted this plea and ordered a finding of guilty with a recommended sentence of six years. However, during an exchange that followed, Mr. Cabrera asserted that he was actually innocent but that he preferred “to take the time” instead of proceeding to trial. The judge then refused to accept Mr. Cabrera’s guilty …

The American Dream: Daca, Dreamers, And Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Heather Fathali
Seattle University Law Review
On June 15, 2012, President Obama made an announcement that changed the lives of millions. Effective immediately, the Obama administration would implement a new program—what would come to be known as Deferred Action for Child-hood Arrivals (DACA)—offering eligible undocumented young people both a two-year respite from the haunting possibility of deportation as well as the eligibility to apply for employment authorization. While millions were elated by the President’s announcement, he also faced harsh criticism. Many claimed that his action exceeded federal statutory limits, exceeded his Executive powers, and usurped congressional authority. Still others, anxious to see comprehensive immigration reform implemented, …

A Mild Winter: The Status Of Environmental Preliminary Injunctions, Sarah J. Morath
Seattle University Law Review
Since the enactment of environmental legislation in the 1970s, the preliminary injunction standard articulated by the Supreme Court for environmental claims has evolved from general principles to enumerated factors. In Winter v. Natural Resource Defense Council, Inc., the Court’s most recent refinement, the Court endorsed but failed to explain the application of a common four-factor test when it held that the alleged injury to marine mammals was outweighed by the public interest of a well-trained and prepared Navy. While a number of commentators have speculated about Winter’s impact on future environmental preliminary injunctions, this article seeks to more precisely determine …
Character, Liberalism, And The Protean Culture Of Evidence Law, Daniel D. Blinka
Character, Liberalism, And The Protean Culture Of Evidence Law, Daniel D. Blinka
Seattle University Law Review
It is time to rethink character evidence. Long notorious as the most frequently litigated evidence issue, character doctrine plagues courts, trial lawyers, and law students with its infamously “grotesque” array of nonsensical rules, whimsical distinctions, and arcane procedures. Character is a calculation of social worth and value; it is the sum total of what others think of us, whether expressed as their own opinion or the collective opinions of many (reputation). Once we grasp that character is a social construct, we are in a better position to address some of the problems that plague evidence law. To provide needed clarity …

The Voice Of Reason—Why Recent Judicial Interpretations Of The Antiterrorism And Effective Death Penalty Act’S Restrictions On Habeas Corpus Are Wrong, Judith L. Ritter
Seattle University Law Review
By filing a petition for a federal writ of habeas corpus, a prisoner initiates a legal proceeding collateral to the direct appeals process. Federal statutes set forth the procedure and parameters of habeas corpus review. The Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) first signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, included significant cut-backs in the availability of federal writs of habeas corpus. This was by congressional design. Yet, despite the dire predictions, for most of the first decade of AEDPA’s reign, the door to habeas relief remained open. More recently, however, the Supreme Court reinterpreted a key portion …
Academic Freedom And Professorial Speech In The Post-Garcetti World, Oren R. Griffin
Academic Freedom And Professorial Speech In The Post-Garcetti World, Oren R. Griffin
Seattle University Law Review
Academic freedom, a coveted feature of higher education, is the concept that faculty should be free to perform their essential functions as professors and scholars without the threat of retaliation or undue administrative influence. The central mission of an academic institution, teach-ing and research, is well served by academic freedom that allows the faculty to conduct its work in the absence of censorship or coercion. In support of this proposition, courts have long held that academic freedom is a special concern of the First Amendment, granting professors and faculty members cherished protections regarding academic speech. In Garcetti v. Ceballos, the …

We present the kinematic properties of a type-2 Quasi stellar object (QSO), SDSS J132323.33−015941.9 at z ∼ 0.35, based on the analysis of Very Large Telescope integral field spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, which suggest that the target is a binary active galactic nucleus (AGN) with double narrow-line regions. The QSO features double-peaked emission lines ([O iii] and Hβ) which can be decomposed into two kinematic components. The flux-weighted centroids of the blue and red components are separated by ∼0.2 arcsec (0.8 kpc in projection) and coincide with the location of the two stellar cores detected …

Zuzu's Petals, Jeffrey James Jarot
Theses and Dissertations
Zuzu's Petals relates the travails of Jules and Julie, a couple whose marriage is in the process of breaking apart. Jules has a "fanboyish" obsession with the 1946 Frank Capra film "It's a Wonderful Life." Furthermore, he is fixated on his own past, and his eccentric behavior has caused his disenchanted wife to seek romantic and emotional solace in David, an old flame from high school. Their child, Zuzu, who was named at Jules' insistence after a key character in the Capra film, has herself sensed that something is amiss in her parents' dealings with each other. The story's narrative …
