Students’ Perceived Utility Of Precision Taught Calculus, Rebecca- Anne Dibbs, David Glassmeyer, Wafa Yacoub Dec 2013

Students’ Perceived Utility Of Precision Taught Calculus, Rebecca- Anne Dibbs, David Glassmeyer, Wafa Yacoub

The Qualitative Report

The last decade of calculus research has showed students learn best when lecture is supplemented with thoughtful use of technology and group work; however, educators are given little direction of how they are to balance the already full first semester calculus class. Precision teaching is an instructional model that employs formative assessment to provide information on what topics are understood by students as well as indicate troublesome concepts. With this information, the instructor can adjust class time accordingly by incorporating supplemental activities most beneficial to students. The purpose of this interview study was to explore the perceived utility of precision …

Tetris Holding V. Xio Interactive Isn’T As Great A Case As Video Game Developers Think It Is, Sam Castree Iii

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

Advances in technology have once again allowed a lone individual, or a small group, to create video games and get them out to the world. I have previously written on the growing problem of cyber-plagiarism – thieves completely copying the works of others and selling them via digital distribution in major online retailers. However, there are many other cases in which games are not blatantly stolen. Sometimes, game developers will merely take inspiration from an existing game, or even make completely coincidental similarities. Fortunately, judges have at their disposal a robust body of law dealing with the copyright’s idea/expression dichotomy, …

Recent Development Of Surface Integral Equation Solvers For Multiscale Interconnects And Circuits, Sheng Sun, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew Dec 2013

Recent Development Of Surface Integral Equation Solvers For Multiscale Interconnects And Circuits, Sheng Sun, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a brief review and recent development of surface integral equation solvers for multiscale interconnects and circuits modeling. As the future production processes down to 5 nm and the operating frequency increases, both multi-scale and large-scale natures should be taken into account in the electromagnetic simulations. Fast, efficient, stable, and broadband integral equation based solvers become indispensable when millions or ten s of millions of unknowns might be involved in the simulation of the integrated circuit. Recent progress and our latest researches in the development of broadband fast electromagnetic solvers will be demonstrated. © 2013 IEEE.

Full-Quantum Simulation Of P-Type Junctionless Transistors With Multi-Band K · P Model, Jun Z. Huang, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jie Peng, Chi Yung Yam, Guan Hua Chen Dec 2013

Full-Quantum Simulation Of P-Type Junctionless Transistors With Multi-Band K · P Model, Jun Z. Huang, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jie Peng, Chi Yung Yam, Guan Hua Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

By adopting a model order reduction technique, we have successfully constructed a program for efficient simulation of nanowire transistors based on the multi-band k · p model and non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) approach. We then study for the first time the influences of various device parameters on the performances of p-type junctionless (JL) transistors and compare them to traditional inversion mode (IM) devices. © 2013 IEEE.

Using Lagrangian Coherent Structures To Study Coastal Water Quality, Laura A. Fiorentino Dec 2013

Using Lagrangian Coherent Structures To Study Coastal Water Quality, Laura A. Fiorentino

Open Access Dissertations

The accumulation of pollutants near the shoreline can result in low quality coastal water with negative effects on human health. To understand the role of mixing by tidal flows in coastal water quality, we study the nearshore Lagrangian circulation of four recreational beaches in Miami, FL, who, despite close proximity, have varying microbial levels. Specifically, we reveal Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs), i.e., distinguished material curves which shape global mixing patterns and thus act as skeletons of the Lagrangian circulation. We show how these material curves, which shape circulation and mixing patterns, can be used to explain the incongruous states of …

Sensitization Of Human Cancer Cells To Gemcitabine By The Chk1 Inhibitor Mk-8776: Cell Cycle Perturbation And Impact Of Administration Schedule In Vitro And In Vivo, Ryan Montano, Ruth Thompson, Injae Chung, Huagang Hou, Nadeem Khan, Alan Eastman Dec 2013

Sensitization Of Human Cancer Cells To Gemcitabine By The Chk1 Inhibitor Mk-8776: Cell Cycle Perturbation And Impact Of Administration Schedule In Vitro And In Vivo, Ryan Montano, Ruth Thompson, Injae Chung, Huagang Hou, Nadeem Khan, Alan Eastman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Chk1 inhibitors have emerged as promising anticancer therapeutic agents particularly when combined with antimetabolites such as gemcitabine, cytarabine or hydroxyurea. Here, we address the importance of appropriate drug scheduling when gemcitabine is combined with the Chk1 inhibitor MK-8776, and the mechanisms involved in the schedule dependence.

Using Expression Profiling To Understand The Effects Of Chronic Cadmium Exposure On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cells, Zelmina Lubovac-Pilav, Daniel M. Borras, Esmeralda Ponce, Maggie Louie Dec 2013

Using Expression Profiling To Understand The Effects Of Chronic Cadmium Exposure On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cells, Zelmina Lubovac-Pilav, Daniel M. Borras, Esmeralda Ponce, Maggie Louie

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Cadmium is a metalloestrogen known to activate the estrogen receptor and promote breast cancer cell growth. Previous studies have implicated cadmium in the development of more malignant tumors; however the molecular mechanisms behind this cadmium-induced malignancy remain elusive. Using clonal cell lines derived from exposing breast cancer cells to cadmium for over 6 months (MCF-7-Cd4, -Cd6, -Cd7, -Cd8 and -Cd12), this study aims to identify gene expression signatures associated with chronic cadmium exposure. Our results demonstrate that prolonged cadmium exposure does not merely result in the deregulation of genes but actually leads to a distinctive expression profile. The genes deregulated …
