Vocation, Friendship And Resilience: A Study Exploring Nursing Student And Staff Views On Retention And Attrition., Graham R. Williamson, Val Health, Tracey Proctor-Childs

School of Nursing and Midwifery

INTRODUCTION: There is international concern about retention of student nurses on undergraduate programmes. United Kingdom Higher Education Institutions are monitored on their attrition statistics and can be penalised financially, so they have an incentive to help students remain on their programmes beyond their moral duty to ensure students receive the best possible educational experience. AIMS: to understand students' and staff concerns about programmes and placements as part of developing our retention strategies. DESIGN: This study reports qualitative data on retention and attrition collected as part of an action research study. SETTING: One University School of Nursing and Midwifery in the …

Event-Driven Visual Attention For The Humanoid Robot Icub, F Rea, G Metta, C Bartolozzi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Fast reaction to sudden and potentially interesting stimuli is a crucial feature for safe and reliable interaction with the environment. Here we present a biologically inspired attention system developed for the humanoid robot iCub. It is based on input from unconventional event-driven vision sensors and an efficient computational method. The resulting system shows low-latency and fast determination of the location of the focus of attention. The performance is benchmarked against an instance of the state of the art in robotics artificial attention system used in robotics. Results show that the proposed system is two orders of magnitude faster that the …

Rebels, Negligent Support, And State Accountability: Holding States Accountable For The Human Rights Violations Of Non-State Actors, Graham Cronogue Jan 2013

Rebels, Negligent Support, And State Accountability: Holding States Accountable For The Human Rights Violations Of Non-State Actors, Graham Cronogue

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

This Note discusses a crucial problem in the law of state accountability for human rights abuses. Specifically, it analyzes the difficulty of attaching liability when a state "negligently supports" a group that it should reasonably expect to commit human rights abuses. This note shows that the current legal framework governing attribution stems from a myopic focus on non-state actors "acting" like arms of the state. Indeed, the current tests require that the state have an extraordinarily high level of control over the non-state actors before liability can attach. This requirement not only creates perverse incentives for states to acquire less …

Being Able To Prosecute Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi: Applying Article 17(3) Of The Rome Statute To Libya, M. Christopher Pitts Jan 2013

Being Able To Prosecute Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi: Applying Article 17(3) Of The Rome Statute To Libya, M. Christopher Pitts

Emory International Law Review

The Arab Spring was a series of revolutions and demonstrations occurring in several nations throughout the Middle East and North Africa. One such revolution was the Libyan Civil War, which ended the forty-year reign of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. While the revolution certainly affected the lives of Libyans, it also left its mark on international criminal law. On February 26, 2011, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1970, which referred the situation in Libya to the International Criminal Court's Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) for an investigation into any international crimes committed by Muammar Gaddafi and his regime since February …

Myths About Women’S Careers In Law, Patricia M. Wald Jan 2013

Myths About Women’S Careers In Law, Patricia M. Wald

University of Baltimore Journal of International Law

Judge Wald discusses several "myths" about women's careers in the law that she has encountered in hers, including the presence of hearty pioneers who despite obstacles and a cold climate pursued satisfying legal careers decades before the "women's movement" of the 1970's; the current status of women in the profession and the impediments to their further advancement, the enduring problems they confront in maintaining the "delicate balance" between marriage, motherhood and careers and the institutional reticence to accommodate their dual role, the need for vigilance to keep the gains they have already made from slipping away, whether men and women …

The Berne Convention's Flexible Fixation Requirement: A Problematic Provision For User-Generated Content, Elizabeth White Jan 2013

The Berne Convention's Flexible Fixation Requirement: A Problematic Provision For User-Generated Content, Elizabeth White

Chicago Journal of International Law

The Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works sets forth an international standard for copyright protection. However, the fixation provision directs signatories to prescribe works subject to a fixation requirement for copyright protection however they choose. This provision of the Convention and the corresponding legislation that has been generated are of particular relevance to the debate over the protection of user-generated content (UGC). UGC, which has become popular on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, raises an important question for the fixation standard. Specifically, it is not clear whether or not UGC is fixed, and therefore …

Nothing Certain About Death And Taxes (And Inheritance): European Union Regulation Of Cross-Border Successions, Jennifer Bost Jan 2013

Nothing Certain About Death And Taxes (And Inheritance): European Union Regulation Of Cross-Border Successions, Jennifer Bost

Emory International Law Review

On July 4, 2012, after almost fifteen years of preparatory work, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union (Council) passed a regulation intended to simplify international inheritance cases. The Regulation addresses issues regarding appropriate jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement of decisions, and acceptance and enforcement of authentic instruments for international inheritance (Cross-Border Succession). It also creates a European Certificate of Succession. However, the Regulation expressly does not apply to any tax issues related to inheritance.

Lochner Disembedded: The Anxieties Of Law In A Global Context, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2013

Lochner Disembedded: The Anxieties Of Law In A Global Context, Peer Zumbansen

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This paper explores, in an inevitably cursory manner, some of the main challenges facing a legal theory of transnational governance today. In part building on and responding to William Twining's identification of key problems of law in a global context (2009; 2012), the following paper adopts a two-fold approach. One element is to suggest a conceptual architecture, which captures law in its transformational state through a focus on actors, norms, and processes. Second, the paper proposes case

studies as a central methodological device to explore the nature, scope, and function of governance-both legal and nonlegal-in a global context. Through the …

Employability And Transferable Skills: Investigating Work Placements For Humanities Students, Sandra Barkhof, C Rockey

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This project aims to enhance the employability of our graduates through an evaluative case study investigating subject-specific work placement and work experience opportunities in the local and regional community. The project will use a new work-facing module on ‘History and Heritage’ as a case study, although the aim of the project is to provide a sustainable model for a work-facing approach to teaching that can also be applied to other subjects. In the past, History as a course has offered no work placements or work experience either as part of the curriculum or as extra-curricular activities. Preliminary research has shown that …

School of Biomedical Sciences

Successful multidrug-resistant clones are increasing in prevalence globally, which makes the ability to identify these clones urgent. However, adequate, easy-to-perform, and reproducible typing methods are lacking. We investigated whether DiversiLab (DL), an automated repetitive-sequence-based PCR bacterial typing system (bioMérieux), is suitable for comparing isolates analyzed at different geographic centers. A total of 39 Escherichia coli and 39 Klebsiella species isolates previously typed by the coordinating center were analyzed. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) confirmed the presence of one cluster of 6 isolates, three clusters of 3 isolates, and three clusters of 2 isolates for each set of isolates. DL analysis was …

A Role For Two‐Pore Potassium (K2p) Channels In Endometrial Epithelial Function, Sk Patel, L Jackson, Ay Warren, Et Al Jan 2013

A Role For Two‐Pore Potassium (K2p) Channels In Endometrial Epithelial Function, Sk Patel, L Jackson, Ay Warren, Et Al

School of Nursing and Midwifery

The human endometrial epithelium is pivotal to menstrual cycle progression, implantation and early pregnancy. Endometrial function is directly regulated by local factors that include pH, oxygen tension and ion concentrations to generate an environment conducive to fertilization. A superfamily of potassium channels characterized by two-pore domains (K2P) and encoded by KCNK genes is implicated in the control of the cell resting membrane potential through the generation of leak currents and modulation by various physicochemical stimuli. The aims of the study were to determine the expression and function of K2P channel subtypes in proliferative and secretory phase endometrium obtained from normo-ovulatory …

Energy Productivity And Efficiency Of Maize Accounting For The Choice Of Growing Season And Environmental Factors: An Empirical Analysis From Bangladesh, S Rahman, Ms Rahman Jan 2013

Energy Productivity And Efficiency Of Maize Accounting For The Choice Of Growing Season And Environmental Factors: An Empirical Analysis From Bangladesh, S Rahman, Ms Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The paper evaluates sustainability of maize cultivation in Bangladesh in terms of energy use while taking into account factors affecting choice of the growing season and farmers' production environment using a sample selection framework applied to stochastic frontier models. Results reveal that the probability of growing winter maize is influenced positively by gross return, irrigation, subsistence pressure, soil suitability and temperature variability whereas extension contact influences choice negatively. Significant differences exist between winter and summer maize regarding yield, specific energy, net energy balance, energy use efficiency and technical energy efficiency although both systems are highly sustainable and efficient. The energy …

Anything For You Big Boy: A Comparative Analysis Of Banking Regulation In The United States And The United Kingdom In Light Of The Libor Scandal, Christopher Hall

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

In June 2012, Barclays Bank PLC entered into a settlement agreement with the United Kingdom’s Financial Services Authority and the United States’ Commodities Futures Trading Commission that settled Barclays’s role in manipulating the London Interbank Offered Rate, or LIBOR. The Barclays episode, and related scandal, provides an opportunity to examine approaches to financial regulation in the United Kingdom and the United States. This Note uses that opportunity to compare and contrast the approach to financial regulation in the United Kingdom and the United States. In particular, this Note contends that the LIBOR scandal reveals three problems with the then-existing approaches …
