Recognizing Heritage, Thomas H. Guthrie
Recognizing Heritage, Thomas H. Guthrie
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
In 2006 Congress established the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area to recognize the four-hundred-year “coexistence” of Spanish and Indian peoples in New Mexico and their place in the United States. National heritage areas enable local communities to partner with the federal government to promote historic preservation, cultural conservation, and economic development.Recognizing Heritage explores the social, political, and historical context of this and other public efforts to interpret and preserve Native American and Hispanic heritage in northern New Mexico. The federal government’s recognition of New Mexico’s cultural distinctiveness contrasts sharply with its earlier efforts to wipe out Indian and …
Coming Full Circle, Suzanne Crawford O’Brien
Coming Full Circle, Suzanne Crawford O’Brien
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Coming Full Circle is an interdisciplinary exploration of the relationships between spirituality and health in several contemporary Coast Salish and Chinook communities in western Washington from 1805 to 2005. Suzanne Crawford O’Brien examines how these communities define what it means to be healthy, and how recent tribal community–based health programs have applied this understanding to their missions and activities. She also explores how contemporary definitions, goals, and activities relating to health and healing are informed by Coast Salish history and also by indigenous spiritual views of the body, which are based on an understanding of the relationship between self, ecology, …

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
How can we help educators realize the wealth and relevancy that culturally and linguistically diverse families and students bring into the schools? Preparing teachers to effectively teach across socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and gender differences is complicated by a lack of familiarity with or valuing of the cultures, learning styles, and communication patterns of diverse groups (Bohn & Sleeter, 2000). Today, however, 84% of teachers are white (Feistritzer, 2011), despite serving 74 million children in the United States (defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as those under 18 years of age), of which 59% are White; 19% Hispanic, 15%; Black, 4%; …

An Eriksonian Approach To Consumer Identity, Sandra Rathod
An Eriksonian Approach To Consumer Identity, Sandra Rathod
Open Access Dissertations
Rathod, Sandra R. Ph.D., Purdue University, December 2013. An Eriksonian Approach to Consumer Identity. Major Professor: Richard A. Feinberg.
Ego development is the fifth stage in Erikson's Lifecycle Development theory (1959) and is a major psychosocial stage beginning in adolescence and lasting into emerging adulthood. Past research based upon Marcia's Ego Identity Status Paradigm (1996) has investigated a number of ideological and interpersonal domains relevant to one's ego identity, however in today's consumer societies, where what you have is at least as important is who you are or what you do, an Eriksonian approach to consumer ego identity (CEI) has …

Youth And Vegetative Renewal In Ancient Maya Religious Ideology, Emma Pankey
Youth And Vegetative Renewal In Ancient Maya Religious Ideology, Emma Pankey
Spectrum
The role of children in ancient Maya religion and ritual was predicated upon the qualities of youth and vitalization that children possess. Furthermore, their role was rooted in associations between these possessed qualities, phenomena of agricultural renewal, and broader conceptions of life forces and cycles. These shared qualities created links between religious ideas about young children, agricultural sustenance, and ensoulment processes. Ethnohistoric and ethnographic accounts relating to ritualized child socialization provide details for parallel arguments on the ancient social and religious status of Maya children. Ideological connections can also be directly inferred from ancient Maya art, and can be interpreted …
Purity In Seclusion: Exploring The Anchoritic Lifestyle Through An Archaeological Lens, Monica Stewart
Purity In Seclusion: Exploring The Anchoritic Lifestyle Through An Archaeological Lens, Monica Stewart
Spectrum
This paper uses both archaeological and ethno-historical data to cross-examine theoretical explanations for understanding the anchoritic lifestyle, which are grounded in gender and feminist theory, sexuality and queer theory, as well as theories of personhood and permeability. For interpretations related to gender and feminist theory, I will crossexamine case studies involving other circumstances of ordained seclusion in Christianity. These case studies include the monjeríos, or the separate living quarters built for unmarried indigenous women of Spanish colonial California, as well as seclusion of “wayward women” by the Magdalen Society of Philadelphia. In addition, I examine archaeological studies conducted by Roberta …
Presenting Pompeii: Reconciling Relationships Between Configuration And Conservation, Karilyn Sheldon
Presenting Pompeii: Reconciling Relationships Between Configuration And Conservation, Karilyn Sheldon
Spectrum
Mark Twain’s idealized testimonial in his travelogue Innocents Abroad is not a revolutionary phenomenon. Pompeii has long been considered a city with breathtaking preservation, but the extent of preservation has been a recent source of controversy. The city continues to crumble with hoards of visitors, and the shortcomings of conservation efforts are taking their toll on the city. Recent collapses have revived disputes over the management, organization and conservation of Pompeii. The disjointed relationship between the presentation of Pompeii and its preservation was evident just after the opening of the city to the public over 150 years ago, and are …

Ell High School Students Of Mexican Ancestry: A Phenomenological Study Of Language Ideologies, Kristine Sudbeck
Ell High School Students Of Mexican Ancestry: A Phenomenological Study Of Language Ideologies, Kristine Sudbeck
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
The formation of languages and dialects is frequently considered a social process (Gal & Irvine, 1995). As such, humans form their own ideologies about particular language varieties, placing values on certain ones in a given context more than others (Greenfield, 2010). The development of a person’s language ideology can be influenced by the profit of distinction, which Pierre Bourdieu (1984) describes as the “noted margin of difference for usefulness and prestige of a particular language” (p. 55). It is through the process of misrecognition (Bourdieu, 1984) that a particular language is “recognized as legitimate and appropriate for discourse in official …

An Empirical Comparison Of Knowledge And Skill In The Context Of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Kathryn Demps
An Empirical Comparison Of Knowledge And Skill In The Context Of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Kathryn Demps
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background
We test whether traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) about how to make an item predicts a person’s skill at making it among the Tsimane’ (Bolivia). The rationale for this research is that the failure to distinguish between knowledge and skill might account for some of the conflicting results about the relationships between TEK, human health, and economic development.
Methods
We test the association between a commonly-used measure of individual knowledge (cultural consensus analysis) about how to make an arrow or a bag and a measure of individual skill at making these items, using ordinary least-squares regression. The study consists of …
The Racial And Ethnic Identity Formation Process Of Second- Generation Asian Indian Americans: A Phenomenological Study, Derek Kenji Iwamoto, Nalini Junko Negi, Rachel Negar Partiali, John W. Creswell
The Racial And Ethnic Identity Formation Process Of Second- Generation Asian Indian Americans: A Phenomenological Study, Derek Kenji Iwamoto, Nalini Junko Negi, Rachel Negar Partiali, John W. Creswell
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
This phenomenological study elucidates the identity development processes of 12 secondgeneration adult Asian Indian Americans. The results identify salient sociocultural factors and multidimensional processes of racial and ethnic identity development. Discrimination, parental, and community factors seemed to play a salient role in influencing participants’ racial and ethnic identity development. The emergent Asian Indian American racial and ethnic identity model provides a contextualized overview of key developmental periods and turning points within the process of identity development.
