A Hybrid Procedure For Classifying Synoptic Weather Types For Louisiana With An Application To Precipitation Variability, Amanda Michelle Billiot
A Hybrid Procedure For Classifying Synoptic Weather Types For Louisiana With An Application To Precipitation Variability, Amanda Michelle Billiot
LSU Master's Theses
An automated synoptic weather classification system, based on the weather types devised by Robert Muller for Louisiana, is presented in this thesis and an application of the classification system to precipitation variability in Louisiana is demonstrated. The automated classification presented here is a hybrid classification system that uses sea level pressure composites for each Muller weather type as seeds in a correlation procedure to classify daily NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis sea level pressure patterns. The resulting hybrid classification is automated, objective, and has value in describing the surface weather variability in Louisiana. In the second part of this research project, the newly …
Sites Of Indigenous Language Practice : Geography Of American Indian Language Policy, Thomas Pierre-Yves Brasdefer
Sites Of Indigenous Language Practice : Geography Of American Indian Language Policy, Thomas Pierre-Yves Brasdefer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
For over 1.9 million indigenous people in the United States, speaking their native language has become a rare opportunity. There are several obstacles standing in their way, from geographically separated communities to hundreds of years of contrarian policies and sometimes a collective lack of interest. Today, indigenous language use has become an integral part of self-determination and political sovereignty, sometimes more so than a communicative activity. This dissertation examines the political steps taken by American Indian communities around the United States to ensure that their languages can still be spoken into the twenty-first century, and analyzes the complex implications of …
Voices From The Coolest Corner Of Hell: A Content Analysis Of Slave Narratives In The Study Of Creolization In The Education Of 19th Century African American Slaves, Gina M. Rizzuto
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The general argument made by Southern historian, Ulrich Bonnell Phillips in 1918, is that the plantation functioned as a type of school for the slave. Similarly, in 1976, Anthony Gerald Albanese examined the plantation system as an institution that conditioned the behaviors of both slaves and slave owners. I maintain that the plantation system was not only an educative agency that conditioned behaviors, but also a conduit for the creolization process. The focus of this study is creolization in the education of African American slaves in the nineteenth century. This is a mixed methods content analysis of African American slave …
An Exploration Of The Meaning And Consequences Of Unintended Pregnancy Among Latina Cultural Subgroups: Social, Cultural, Structural, Historical And Political Influences, Natalie Dolores Hernandez
An Exploration Of The Meaning And Consequences Of Unintended Pregnancy Among Latina Cultural Subgroups: Social, Cultural, Structural, Historical And Political Influences, Natalie Dolores Hernandez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, prominent racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in rates of unintended pregnancy, abortion, and unintended births exist. Recent analysis suggests that Latinas are three times more likely to experience an unintended pregnancy than non-Latina white women. More than half of pregnancies among Latinas (53%) in the United States are unintended and have higher unintended births as they are less likely than black women to have an abortion. In addition, in 2006 the unintended pregnancy rate was highest among women aged 20-24. Little research has 0been conducted to understand unintended pregnancy particularly among young adult Latina women.
The purpose …
Risk And Hiv-Serodiscordant Couples In Porto Alegre, Brazil: "Normal" Life And The Semantic Quarantine, Shana Hughes
Risk And Hiv-Serodiscordant Couples In Porto Alegre, Brazil: "Normal" Life And The Semantic Quarantine, Shana Hughes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to develop a holistic understanding of how risk, especially the risk of HIV transmission, is constructed and negotiated in the daily lives of a group of heterosexual, HIV-serodiscordant couples in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Couples serodiscordant for HIV are those in which one partner is infected and the other is not. Data were gathered through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with serodiscordant couples, as well as key informants in HIV/AIDS-related civil society, government, and biomedical practitioners in Porto Alegre. Interviews were recorded and transcribed and relevant study materials were coded and subjected to thematic and …
Ten Thousand Years Of Prehistory On Ocheesee Pond, Northwest Florida. Archaeological Investigations On The Keene Family Land, Jackson County, Caitlin Kelley
Ten Thousand Years Of Prehistory On Ocheesee Pond, Northwest Florida. Archaeological Investigations On The Keene Family Land, Jackson County, Caitlin Kelley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to record the private archaeological collection of the Keene family, which was previously unknown to the professional community. While at the two sites, Keene Redfield site (8Ja1847) and Keene Dog Pond site (8Ja1848), in Jackson County, northwest Florida, USF archaeologists also conducted field investigations to look for prehistoric cultural materials in undisturbed contexts.
This research was conducted at the request of the Keene family. The field crew systematically documented, cataloged and photographed each artifact in the Keene collection while at the sites. Surface survey and testing were also carried out in order to determine …
Mapping Dissertation Genre Ecology, Kate Lisbeth Pantelides
Mapping Dissertation Genre Ecology, Kate Lisbeth Pantelides
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Though the pervasive rumor that the “traditional” dissertation persists because of the “I suffered, so they too should suffer” mentality — the professor revenge theory — students are often the ones eager to pin down writing genres so that they can master them. However, hopes to stabilize and thus capture the secret or equation of the dissertation genre are futile, since genres, like language, are alive: rhetorical, evolving, and flexible. Thus, to demonstrate the contemporary context of the dissertation genre, the conflicting perspectives of university stakeholders, the forces working on the genre to enact change, and the process by which …
"In Our Veins Flows The Blood Of Many Brave Races": The Influence Of The German Literary Vampire On Constructions Of Race And Nation In Nineteenth-Century British Vampire Fiction, Amanda L. Alexander
"In Our Veins Flows The Blood Of Many Brave Races": The Influence Of The German Literary Vampire On Constructions Of Race And Nation In Nineteenth-Century British Vampire Fiction, Amanda L. Alexander
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The literary vampire figure, as it would be recognized today, entered English literature through translations of late eighteenth century German poetry. The purpose of this project is to explore how the relationship between German vampire ballads and British vampire narratives acts as a literary manifestation of German-British cultural and political attitudes and interactions in the roughly century and a half before World War I. This relationship will be discussed through an exploration of the constructs of blood and body within vampire narratives in direct relationship to sociocultural discourses of race in Pre-WWI England. This project seeks to explore the following …
The Sociology Of Library Crime In Nigerian Academic Libraries, Flora Ifeoma Okogwu, Uchenna M. Nnam
The Sociology Of Library Crime In Nigerian Academic Libraries, Flora Ifeoma Okogwu, Uchenna M. Nnam
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The spate of library crime in Nigerian academic libraries is presently alarming. This paper, therefore, is designed to dissect the patterns and trends of this crime using sociological tenets and social dynamics. Through the literature review, the major causes, dimensions and implications of library crime were unravelled. Dearth of knowledge-enhancing, sought-after and expensive reading materials, environmental nature (physical and structural arrangements) of libraries, and economic hardship are some of the causes of library crime, which manifests in various forms: theft, pilfering, mutilation, and fraud. This paper revealed that library crimes have deleterious effects on individual users, library staff, academic community …
