Mechanistic Reasoning Of Selected Form Four Science Students On The Theory Of Cell / Lee Shuh Shing, Shuh Shing Lee
Mechanistic Reasoning Of Selected Form Four Science Students On The Theory Of Cell / Lee Shuh Shing, Shuh Shing Lee
Student Works (2010-2019)
Understanding the causal mechanisms that underlie natural phenomena is the focus of biological inquiry. Mechanistic reasoning is a thought process as to how a cause brings about an effect. Without this skill, students find it hard to explain various biological processes, for example such as those related to cells. However, research has shown that many teachers believe that it is inappropriate in trying to infuse mechanistic reasoning among the low achieving students as compared to the high achieving ones. Thus, the overall aim of this study was to explore in depth, selected Form Four high and low achieving students’ mechanistic …

Igal:The Traditional Performing Arts Of The Bajau Laut In Semporna, Sabah / Hafzan Zannie Hamza, Hamza Hafzan Zannie
Student Works (2010-2019)
This thesis examines the concept and meaning of igal, an indigenous dance tradition of the Bajau Laut community in Semporna, Sabah. Igal or ‘dance’ to the Bajau Laut community signifies more than just a ‘dance’. This thesis posits that igal represents Bajau Laut’s culture, heritage, worldview, and cultural memory; through its epistemology and the construction of its form and content. The practice and performance of igal in Bajau Laut cultural landscape articulates the psychological impression of concept and meaning, and is signified as the Bajau Laut restored behavior. Thus, it is necessary to uncover the concept and meaning of igal …

Amalan Tradisi Dalam Masyarakat Bajau Di Semporna Sabah : Analisis Dari Perspektif 'Urf Dalam Hukum Islam / Syamsul Azizul Bin Marinsah, Syamsul Azizul Marinsah
Student Works (2010-2019)

Grounding The International Norm On Women, Peace And Security: The Role Of Domestic Norm Entrepreneurs And The Challenges Ahead, Ma. Lourdes Veneracion-Rallonza
Political Science Department Faculty Publications
One of the gaps in the study of international norms is the process by which they are institutionalized and accepted at the national level. As the international norm negotiates its way through various national (and even grassroots) levels, a point of inquiry would be how domestic norm entrepreneurs have enabled its localization. This study looks at the narrative of a loose network of peace and women’s human rights groups that worked together to localize United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on women, peace and security in the Philippines. Specifically, it reviews how the network evolved to become a domestic …

Floracultures: Conserving Perth's Botanical Heritage Through A Digital Repository, John C. Ryan
Research outputs 2013
FloraCultures is a 2013 pilot project in development with Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, Western Australia, and funded by Edith Cowan University’s Early Career Researcher grant scheme. The project aims to develop a model for documenting the plant-based cultural heritage of 30–50 indigenous species occurring in the Kings Park bushland. The FloraCultures initiative integrates archival and digital design techniques, creating a unique web portal of potential interest to a range of users -- from first-time tourists and amateur naturalists to heritage consultants and evironmental conservationists . The initiative reflects the belief that research into environmental heritage (defined broadly …
Towards A Folk Taxonomy Of Popular New Media Marketing Terms, Nathalie S. Collins, Jamie Murphy
Towards A Folk Taxonomy Of Popular New Media Marketing Terms, Nathalie S. Collins, Jamie Murphy
Research outputs 2013
Word of Mouth and Brand Community Marketing terms have emerged to describe particular people and their effectiveness in promoting messages, particularly with the emergence of social media. The development of the terms and their use are concurrent in academic literature, industry literature and popular culture. Furthermore, it is common for these terms to converge, borrowing meanings, connotations and subtexts. This paper explores five key community marketing terms−Geek, Maven, Alpha User, Evangelist and Fanboy−and develops term classifications and relationships into a folk taxonomy. Tourism and hospitality practitioners and academics can use the taxonomy for word of mouth activities and research.
Isaac Of Nineveh's Contribution To Syriac Theology: An Eschatological Reworking Of Greek Anthropology, Jason Scully
Isaac Of Nineveh's Contribution To Syriac Theology: An Eschatological Reworking Of Greek Anthropology, Jason Scully
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation responds to an explicitdesideratum from Robert Beulay, who, in his book La Lumière sans forme, calls for a presentation of Isaac's thought with special attention to his sources.
Contrary to the belief of older scholarship, I conclude that Isaac's anthropology and eschatology are much more than a Syriac repetition of Greek Evagrian thought; rather, they are influenced by John the Solitary, a Syriac author who has received less scholarly attention. Although Isaac refers to Evagrius, as well as Pseudo-Dionysius and Pseudo-Macarius, to define specific terminology, the influence of John the Solitary permeates all areas of Isaac's thought.

This Little City': Constructed Colonialism At The 1922 Colonial Exposition Of Marseille, Allison Ranshous , '13
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This paper explores the intersection of race and French colonial policy at the 1922 National Colonial Exposition of Marseille, which occurred in the midst of Europe's "exposition fever," during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I posit that the Exposition introduced the paradox of formal, constructed colonial exhibits that were posed against the backdrop of a thriving French city reaping the economic benefits of its colonial exploitation. I also address the question of whether or not native colonial workers, artists, and artisans could be considered truly "modern" if they were continually provincialized and racialized by French colonialists during the …
Resilience In Quaking Aspen: Recent Advances And Future Needs, Paul C. Rogers, C. Eisenberg, S. Clair
Resilience In Quaking Aspen: Recent Advances And Future Needs, Paul C. Rogers, C. Eisenberg, S. Clair
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) sustainability is a topic of intense interest in forest ecology. Reports range from declines to persisting or increasing coverage in some areas. Moreover, there is little agreement on ultimate factors driving changes. Low aspen recruitment has been attributed to climate patterns, past management, herbivore increases, competitive interactions with conifers, predator and beaver extirpation, and livestock grazing. Several of these potential causes result from direct or indirect actions of human agency. On June 27–28, 2012 a group of leading aspen ecologists from diverse backgrounds convened at the High Lonesome Ranch in western Colorado to address the state …
Experiments To Measure The Effects Of Timber Harvesting Equipment On Surface Lithic Scatters, Douglas J. Baughman
Experiments To Measure The Effects Of Timber Harvesting Equipment On Surface Lithic Scatters, Douglas J. Baughman
All Master's Theses
The importance of cultural resource preservation cannot be overstated; however local economies are at least as important. Due to conservative archaeological site protection practices in Region 5 of the United States Forest Service, the economy of Northeastern California is being adversely affected. In an attempt to help the Forest Service make more informed management decisions and improve the Northeastern California economy, I undertook experiments on the effects of timber harvesting on lithic scatters on Modoc National Forest. The experiments involved placement of 225 glass tiles (proxy lithics) in each of three plots subject to vehicle traffic and log dragging by …

Reimagining The Liberal Arts In An Age Of Technoscientific Progress, Melanie Moore Watson
Reimagining The Liberal Arts In An Age Of Technoscientific Progress, Melanie Moore Watson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The following study will investigate the impact of dismantling liberal arts curriculum during an era of dramatic technoscientific progress. I will explore the development of the posthuman focusing specifically on the areas of virtual reality and biomedicine. As I unravel the implications that virtual reality and biomedicine will have on society in the coming decades, I will describe how a new liberal arts curriculum must be entertained by educators in order to maintain innovation, play, and ethical considerations in posthuman developments. In order for our students to become contributing members of a global community, they must be given the opportunity …

Archaeological Survey And Limited Testing At The Lincoln Trail Site (9bn17), Bryan County, Georgia, Ryan O. Sipe
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Lincoln Trail site (9BN17) is an Irene phase (AD 1300-1580) village located in southeastern Bryan County, Georgia within the Richmond Hill Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Prior surface survey (ca. 1973, 2010) indicated an extensive artifact scatter and complex of shell middens in a marsh-edge environment, yet little was known of the site’s nature and no subsurface survey was conducted. 9BN17 was selected as a case study for a broad research query to identify the structure of mainland Irene phase polities and the role that this site played within one. The site was systematically shovel tested, revealing numerous middens, and …

The Invention Of The Native Speaker, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio
The Invention Of The Native Speaker, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
This paper argues that employing the designations “native speaker” and “native language” unreflectively is to engage in a gesture of othering that operates on an axis of empowerment and disempowerment. Bonfiglio examines the ideological legacy of the apparently innocent kinship metaphors of “mother tongue” and “native speaker” by historicizing their linguistic development. He traces the construction of ethnolinguistic nationalism, a composite of national language, identity, geography, and race, which informed the philology of the early modern era and culminated most divisively in the race-conscious discourses of the 19th century. Bonfiglio makes the case that scholarship should scrutinize the tendency to …

Effects Of Different Fasciola Hepatica Recombinant Proteins On The Biochemical And Serological Responses Of Experimentally Infected Sheep, Diana Wesselinova
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In the DELIVER (Full project title: Design of effective and sustainable control strategies for liver fluke in Europe) project the objective was to analyze 3 recombinant antigens for their capacity to induce a satisfied immune response in sheep, to challenge the animals with metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica, and to observe their immune response and protection from the parasitosis. The animals were treated initially with metacercariae and every second week blood was taken for liver enzyme estimation of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), gamma-glutamyl transferase (\gammaGT), and antibody response. After the 3rd month of infection all the animals developed parasitosis, although to different …

Attending To Reality: Iris Murdoch’S Ethical Realism, Ante Jeroncic

Even a scant acquaintance with current cultural and philosophical trends will readily point to a widespread predilection for subjectivist forms of moral reasoning. By “subjectivist” I refer to various non-cognitivist and constructionist paradigms in moral philosophy and popular parlance that reduce ethical statements to expressions of individual or collective preferences, feelings, or prejudices stripped of any object-given normativity. The following are but some of the factors that fuel such perspectives: the proverbial fact/value dichotomy and anti-realist sentiments pervading large swaths of analytic philosophy; poststructuralist and postcolonial “genealogies” that tie the language of universal morality to discourses of power, patriarchy, and …
