Being A Project Manager In A Multinational Corporation: An Interpretive Perspective On Working Practices And Experiences, Waleed Afndy

Doctoral Dissertations

Inspired by the lack of research regarding the firsthand practices and everyday lived experiences of project managers, informed by an ontological orientation, this study looked into what it means to be a project manager in a multinational corporation. It provides an interpretive perspective on these practices and experiences, which includes perspectives of self in relation to an organization and the people, incorporating imagination into work, and organizing for an action.

The Effectiveness Of Educational Support To Orphans And Vulnerable Children In Tanzania And Uganda, Mary Shann, Malcolm Bryant, Mohamad Brooks, Paul Bukuluki, Denis Muhangi, Joe Lugalla, Gideon Kwesigabo

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

Little evidence is available to assist policy makers and donors in deciding what kinds of programs in developing countries are more likely to be effective in supporting the entry and continuation of OVC in secondary schools. This is particularly important for females whose education has direct bearing on child mortality in the next generation. This study gathered four kinds of educational outcome measures in two East African countries ravaged by the AIDS/HIV pandemic. The goal was to determine whether direct scholarship aid to individual students versus various forms of block grants would be more effective in promoting lower rates of …

Blue Book, Daniel Cole Jan 2013

Blue Book, Daniel Cole

Theses and Dissertations

Alain De Botton writes in The Architecture of Happiness, that “any object of design will give off an impression of the psychological and moral attitudes it supports.” Interpreting design then is done by understanding the attitudes of the designer, which either will or will not resonate with the viewer. I may consider the formal and conceptual merits of an object of design, but ultimately my attitudes determine whether the object will have resonance with me. These “attitudes” are, anthropologically speaking, values: what a person finds most good, proper, or desirable in life. Values are the key to the creation of …

The Emergence Of The New Woman In Kate Chopin's The Awakening And Elizabeth Stuart Phelps' The Story Of Avis, Alison Frances Reidy

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The following thesis focuses on two different nineteenth-century American texts: The Awakening by Kate Chopin and The Story of Avis by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. The main focus of this thesis is to explore the emerging New Woman figure in both novels. There is also notable consideration given to the traditional role of True Womanhood and its portrayal in both Chopin and Phelps’ novels. The research found in this paper is from close readings of The Awakening and The Story of Avis and the use of secondary sources such as books and literary criticisms pertaining to the topic. This thesis focuses …

From Mounds To Maps To Models: Visualizing Ancient Architecture Across Landscapes, Heather Richards-Rissetto Jan 2013

From Mounds To Maps To Models: Visualizing Ancient Architecture Across Landscapes, Heather Richards-Rissetto

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Since the onset of settlement pattern studies in the 1950s, landscape mapping projects have become an archaeological mainstay. Remote sensing technologies such as lidar, photogrammetry, and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) steadily reveal new archaeological sites. For landscape archaeology, the detection and mapping of small architectural complexes and households offers important data to contextualize larger (often already known) sites and perform regional analyses. However, because the majority of sites remain unexcavated, analysis is limited, and yet Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and 3D Visualization are expanding the possible uses for older and newly-acquired data on unexcavated mounds. This paper describes a GIS …

Thinking Together About The Common Good: The Political Implications Of Thomas Aquinas's Theory Of Conscience, Angela Concetta Miceli Jan 2013

Thinking Together About The Common Good: The Political Implications Of Thomas Aquinas's Theory Of Conscience, Angela Concetta Miceli

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the problems confronted by claims of ‘freedom of conscience’ in contemporary political society, and argues that freedom of conscience is a critical foundational component of any free political regime. Yet, conscience is often invoked as the final authority or justification for any choice, regardless whether the action or choice violates the common good. In this case, there is a risk that conscience can become identified with subjectivism, radical individualism, or autonomy. I suggest that a re-examination of the theory of conscience found in Aquinas, especially as it relates to human reason, natural law, and prudence, contributes toward …

The Origins Of The Artists: A Lithic Analysis Of A Habitation Site Associated With The Jeffers Petroglyphs, Kevin W. Reider Jan 2013

The Origins Of The Artists: A Lithic Analysis Of A Habitation Site Associated With The Jeffers Petroglyphs, Kevin W. Reider

Departmental Honors Projects

The Jeffers Petroglyphs is one of the most important ancient American Indian rock art sites in the Midwest. The site is unique with over 5,000 individual petroglyphs created over a 9,000-11,000 year span. There have been important studies and interpretations of the petroglyphs, but a large gap of information exists concerning the archaeological sites of those who helped create the petroglyphs. An analysis of the lithic (stone) raw materials found in a habitation site surrounding the Jeffers Petroglyphs was performed in order to help fill in this gap surrounding the origins of the petroglyph creators. The lithic assemblage analyzed was …

The Use Of A Virtual Guest Speaker As A Catalyst For Deep Learning, Alcione N. Ostorga, Peter Farruggio Jan 2013

The Use Of A Virtual Guest Speaker As A Catalyst For Deep Learning, Alcione N. Ostorga, Peter Farruggio

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

Teaching undergraduate students as they prepare to become bilingual teachers is often a challenge due to their maturational development and the logistical limitations of college courses. Nevertheless, teacher educators must foster preservice teachers’ understanding of factors that impact learning and academic success. This article analyses the use of a virtual guest speaker in an asynchronous discussion as a way to promote critical analysis of policy issues which superseded the memorization of concepts taught in the course. Analysis reveals that the virtual guest speaker served as a catalyst for critical thought about the course content.

Palate Shape And Depth : A Shape Matching And Machine Learning Method For Assessment Of Ancestry From Skeletal Remains, Christopher Allan Maier Jan 2013

Palate Shape And Depth : A Shape Matching And Machine Learning Method For Assessment Of Ancestry From Skeletal Remains, Christopher Allan Maier

LSU Master's Theses

The assessment of ancestry from skeletal remains is a vital aspect of forensic anthropology. As such, a myriad of techniques exists for estimating this particular component of the biological profile. The most traditional of these methods utilizes the naked eye and the observer’s experience. As replicability has become more important, objective, metric techniques have been developed. This study attempts to merge these two subfields: by taking a traditionally non-metric feature, palate shape, and using a computer, evaluating it quantitatively. Using 3D digitizer technology in conjunction with shape matching and machine learning methods common in computer science, palate shape curves were …

Intermix: Traditional Pre-Columbian Art Meets Contemporary Design, Luisa Fernanda Restrepo Jan 2013

Intermix: Traditional Pre-Columbian Art Meets Contemporary Design, Luisa Fernanda Restrepo

LSU Master's Theses

Cultural identity is something that impacts the individual, shaping and influencing them, during their lifetime journey. Each person chooses to embrace that identity differently. For my thesis, I investigated pre-Columbian culture and it’s rich history, specifically source visuals of faces as symbolic forms integrated into my visual study. Exploring: various media, elements that are expressive of national identity, image-making techniques, and my graphic design knowledge as vehicles in my work to uncover a different point of view of my own cultural heritage. The process of finding new graphic representations of traditional pre-Columbian faces, while deconstructing and reconstructing their structure and …

The purpose of this research was to analyze the historical context, philosophic basis, and teaching principles of Trendafil Milanov’s violin method, as well as practical applications for violin pedagogy. This qualitative case study incorporated narrative and material culture components and utilized ethnographic observations and semi-structured interviews. The participants were members of the Milanov family who were raised in that tradition and an American student using the Milanov method at the time of the study. An analysis of Milanov’s last published method, First Violin Lessons (1981), was completed to complement interview and observation data. Emergent themes related to the method’s pedagogical …

Alu Elements And Primate Genomics, Adam Trent Mclain Jan 2013

Alu Elements And Primate Genomics, Adam Trent Mclain

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Alu elements are a primate-specific non-autonomous retrotransposon of ~300 base pairs (bp). A Short INterspersed Element (SINE), Alu elements are found in high copy number in genomes across the primate radiation. Alu elements have a history of effective use as a phylogenetic marker due to the presence-absence nature of their retrotransposition, and have been implicated in the cause of a number of genetic diseases. Various subfamilies of Alu elements have gone through periods of increased activity during the history of the primate radiation, with the overwhelming majority of elements classified as genomic "fossils" which no longer propagate but can serve …

Secular Change In The Rate Of Dental Impaction, Kelly Heim Jan 2013

Secular Change In The Rate Of Dental Impaction, Kelly Heim

LSU Master's Theses

Current literature on the prevalence of impaction has not addressed the change over time (secular change) as it relates to the dimensions of the dental arcade. It has been suggested both that the prevalence of impaction is increasing and that the dimensions of the dental arcade may be decreasing, but no studies have investigated these two variables in conjunction with one another. This study aims to record secular change in the prevalence of impaction by utilizing two sets of data: individuals from the Terry collection represent a historic population from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and individuals from …

Seeing The Forest And The Trees: Ancient Maya Wood Selection And Forest Exploitation At The Paynes Creek Salt Works, Belize, Mark Edward Robinson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The discovery of ancient wood, preserved below the seafloor in a shallow mangrove lagoon in Paynes Creek National Park, Belize, provides the opportunity to study human-environment interaction for an aspect of society that can rarely be glimpsed. Taxonomic identification of construction wood and charcoal at Early Classic (A.D. 300-600) Chan B’i, and Late Classic (A.D. 600-900) Atz’aam Na, are reported and discussed to assess forest exploitation strategies and species selection over time. Principles of optimal foraging are applied to interpret the specific contexts of human behavior in wood selection. Insights from the Annales School of French Structural History and the …

British Women And Orientalism In The Early Nineteenth Century : A Study Of Mrs. Meer Hassan Ali's "Observations On The Mussulmauns Of India", Katherine Blank Jan 2013

British Women And Orientalism In The Early Nineteenth Century : A Study Of Mrs. Meer Hassan Ali's "Observations On The Mussulmauns Of India", Katherine Blank

LSU Master's Theses

Mrs. Meer Hassan Ali’s book Observations on the Mussulmauns of India stood as a benchmark of British knowledge about Islam in South Asia throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although Ali’s book was a seminal and highly regarded book, modern intellectual and women’s historians have largely ignored her contribution towards the mainstream perception of Islam in colonial India. Published in 1832, Observations on the Mussulmauns countered many negative stereotypes about Islam that had become common in the works of Indologists by putting forth a new perspective gleaned from Ali’s decade-long stay in India, where she lived with her husband’s family …

Cultivating Bilingual Learners’ Language Arts Knowledge: A Framework For Successful Teaching, Isela Almaguer, J. Joy Esquierdo Jan 2013

Cultivating Bilingual Learners’ Language Arts Knowledge: A Framework For Successful Teaching, Isela Almaguer, J. Joy Esquierdo

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

It is essential to support bilingual learners’ language and academic development; however, teaching second language learners English has taken precedence over teaching content area knowledge and vocabulary, specifically for language arts. The focus has shifted from content area instruction to primarily second language instruction due to an increasingly diverse population and an increasing number of bilingual learners in formal school settings. This article introduces a framework for accomplishing both linguistic and content literacy simultaneously. The framework takes into account the four elements of the principles of learning, learner appropriate pedagogy, contextual interaction theory, student language (L1/L2) proficiency level, and a …
