The “Little White Lie:” An Exercise To Explore The Relevance Of Diversity Curriculum, Kristine F. Hoover, Lazarina Topuzova, Heather M. L.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Compared to the previous decade, fewer incoming college students see racism as a major problem in America (Sax et al. 2001). While there are many complex variables that contribute to persistent racism, we argue that forms of both overt and covert racism are in part perpetuated by our language. This paper offers a concrete example of how educators in business schools in Jesuit institutions of higher education can infuse justice/social responsibility into our curricula (Spitzer 2010). The classroom activity, as described, is designed for a traditional face-to-face undergraduate classroom. Grounded in the principles of Ignatian pedagogy, this exercise provides a …

Of Icons And Ibs: Contextualizing The Inductive Bible Study Method Among Eastern Orthodox Background Believers, Curtis Elliott Jan 2013

Of Icons And Ibs: Contextualizing The Inductive Bible Study Method Among Eastern Orthodox Background Believers, Curtis Elliott

The Asbury Journal

Curtis Elliott explores the application of Inductive Bible Study to an Eastern Orthodox context, where the Bible is approached more from a position of mystery and tradition. He presents a number of problems a typical Protestant approach of this method can cause, and proposes a postmodern narrative-weave approach to Bible study that could potentially alleviate some of these problems.

Not In Our Blood The "Othering" Of Hiv/Aids In South Carolina, Kortney Lapeyrolerie Jan 2013

Not In Our Blood The "Othering" Of Hiv/Aids In South Carolina, Kortney Lapeyrolerie

Theses & ETDs

This thesis posits that stigma and othering, secured and fortified by structural violence, surround the community of people living with HIV/AIDS in South Carolina. This thesis is largely based on ethnographic research carried out at an HIV/AIDS prevention and HIV/AIDS-related services center, which I call the Agency. The following chapters are a combination of data from the field site with historical research. A brief national and local historical account look into how the roles of stigma, othering, and structural violence played a role in reporting about HIV/AIDS and the care of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Data from fieldwork explores …

The Recording And Analysis Of A Vocal Repertoire For The Red Ruffed Lemur, Varecia Rubra, Daphne Hudson Jan 2013

The Recording And Analysis Of A Vocal Repertoire For The Red Ruffed Lemur, Varecia Rubra, Daphne Hudson

Theses & ETDs

The unusual vocalizations of our nonhuman primate relatives have long fascinated anthropologists and primatologists. To understand what these animals communicate, researchers have recorded and played back the calls of many species of primate. In the summer of 2012, I embarked on a five week study of five male captive red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra) in order to create a behavioral vocal repertoire for this species. During this short study, I recorded 977 vocalizations and grouped over 800 of these into ten definitive categories: the bray, chatter, growl, growl-snort, grunt, mew, pulsed squawk, roar-shriek chorus, sniff, and squeal. A comparison of …

Leaving The Homeland On La Jornada Del Muerto The Archaeology Of Tiffany Pueblo, Evan Giomi Jan 2013

Leaving The Homeland On La Jornada Del Muerto The Archaeology Of Tiffany Pueblo, Evan Giomi

Theses & ETDs

The history of the late pre-contact and early Colonial periods along the lower Rio Grande in New Mexico has been poorly studied archaeologically. Without an indigenous occupation after the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, the region has had little academic attention comparative to the histories of the Pueblos along the middle and northern Rio Grande, many of which maintain an indigenous population into the present. Yet, a descendent population of the Piro people who lived in the lower Rio Grande does exists in the present day, centered mainly in El Paso and Ciudad de Juarez. Following developments in indigenous archaeology in the …

A Crack In The Glass Short Ethnography From Detroit, Adham Afifi Jan 2013

A Crack In The Glass Short Ethnography From Detroit, Adham Afifi

Theses & ETDs

Over the past two decades the city of Detroit has developed a dangerous reputation in the eyes of the American public, claiming the title of United States Murder Capital time and time again. This notoriety, however, is present in the city's local atmosphere more as muted potential than pervasive reality. By the same token, Detroit is popularly associated with poverty and economic collapse, yet many in the city have developed effective methods for maintaining the vitality of their communities. My research in Detroit was conducted over a period of six months, living in two neighborhoods and attending one Pentecostal church. …

Myth And The German Becoming, Lucas Ballestin Jan 2013

Myth And The German Becoming, Lucas Ballestin

Theses & ETDs

This thesis sketches the developing interest in the role of myths in the construction of a German national identity in the writings of Johann Herder, Johann Fichte, Richard Wagner, and Friedrich Nietzsche. By properly situating these intellectuals in their historical and intellectual context, this thesis examines the way in which the four thinkers refined and mobilized a conception of myth as an essential aspect of the German national identity. Moreover, this thesis explores crucial continuities and recurring themes traversing the work of these four intellectuals, as well as some key differences and breaks. By means of this investigation, this thesis …

"The Black Hills Are Not For Sale" Environmental Justice In Lakota Country, Olivia Brockmeier Jan 2013

"The Black Hills Are Not For Sale" Environmental Justice In Lakota Country, Olivia Brockmeier

Theses & ETDs

From the beginnings of what has been defined as the Environmental Justice Movement in the United States, public attention has been primarily focused on injustices based on race and class involving exposure to polluted air, water, toxic wastes, and dangerous working conditions. Since the 1800's, the Black Hills have been at the center of a bitter dispute between the United States federal government and Native inhabitants of the region. The history of the Black Hills land dispute is intertwined with a history of land dispossession, marginalization, and discriminatory federal policies. For the Lakota and other Native communities to whom the …

Critical Meaning On Collage As A Critical Form Of Creative Expression, Fabienne Elie Jan 2013

Critical Meaning On Collage As A Critical Form Of Creative Expression, Fabienne Elie

Theses & ETDs

Collage in the contemporary art world is often relegated to an experiment in craft rather fine art. With the advent of digital imaging and its consequent effect on the ubiquity of the Image, the potential for the renaissance of Collage as a critical avant-garde form of creative expression has emerged. This project sought to investigate through a historical as well as contemporary lens, the features of Collage that gave it critical dimension. Using prominent works by the theorist R.G. Collingwood, a formal notion of aesthetic expression that took into account both the artist and the spectator is establish. Beginning from …

Ainu Of Northern Japan, Evan Darrow Jan 2013

Ainu Of Northern Japan, Evan Darrow

Theses & ETDs

The Ainu have a unique place in the Modern Japanese State as the only non-Wajin, internal, indigenous ethnic group. At the same time, they share a common history with most indigenous groups, one of colonial domination. The start of this colonial endeavor by the Japanese state began, at the latest, in the sixteenth century C.E., and continues today. As a result of the colonial process, most Ainu have lower social, economic, and educational opportunities that the average Japanese citizen. To explore these points, this thesis analyzes the history of Japanese colonial policy through an Ainu context, and then explores the …

The Chilam Balam Of Ixil The Contents And Contexts Of A Colonial Maya Manuscript, Gail Fish Jan 2013

The Chilam Balam Of Ixil The Contents And Contexts Of A Colonial Maya Manuscript, Gail Fish

Theses & ETDs

This work is an extended discussion and analysis of the colonial Maya manuscript, the Chilam Balam of Ixil. This manuscript was written in the Yucatec village of Ixil in the late eighteenth century and is a compilation of various sources. Its focus is primarily on astronomy and astrology, both of European and Mesoamerican origin. This research is historically and anthropologically grounded to provide a more holistic view of the work itself. I argue that the Ixil manuscript is analogous to a fixed landscape in which sources from multiple times and places are resituated in a coherent work. This new whole …

Comrade Wolf Knows Whom To Eat Language Policy And Negotiated Boundaries In Regional Russia, Michael Getz Jan 2013

Comrade Wolf Knows Whom To Eat Language Policy And Negotiated Boundaries In Regional Russia, Michael Getz

Theses & ETDs

The dissolution of the USSR created an institutional vacuum in which the Russian Federation was formed. During this process, the ethnically defined republics of the nascent federation lobbied for greater sovereignty, partially on the basis of their national distinctness from the Russian ethnicity. Ethnic elites and political entrepreneurs advocated cultural revival movements as a means of assuring the protection of national identities from the forces of cultural assimilation prevalent in a modernizing society. One element of these efforts is the development of national languages, which can be promoted by implementing language policies that address the use of native languages in …

Place And Space In J.R.R. Tolkien's And Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings, Chelsea Corarito Jan 2013

Place And Space In J.R.R. Tolkien's And Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings, Chelsea Corarito

Theses & ETDs

My thesis argues that J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings develops "space" and "place" through character while Peter Jackson's adaptations of the novels craft character through landscapes. I use Michel de Certeau's philosophies on "space" and "place" to discuss the transitory nature of liminal landscapes by comparing the different notions of place created by the Fellowship with those by the supernatural entities. The quest structure and the relationship between character and landscape can be seen in both medieval literature and Tolkien's work. This demonstrates how Tolkien is progressing and advancing the genre of fantasy literature through medieval literary practices. …

Doll Eyes, Doll Mouth An Analysis Of Six Ceramic Figurine Heads From Terminal Classic Cahal Pech, Belize, Mallory Fenn

Theses & ETDs

Ceramic figurines are one of the most common classes of artifact in the Maya world, although in-depth studies of this type of artifact did not begin until then late 20th century. Figurines offer representations of numerous facets of Maya life and embody glimpses into Maya worldviews. This thesis presents a comparative stylistic analysis of a sample of six Terminal Classic ceramic figurines from Cahal Pech, in modern-day San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize. It attempts to further elucidate the sociopolitical climate if Terminal Classic Cahal Pech, better understand trade relations between Cahal Pech and other Maya Lowlands sites, and ascertain whether deeper …

Sir Richard Has Taken Off His Considering Cap! An Anthropological Critique Of The Disease Model Of Alcoholism, Miranda Black Jan 2013

Sir Richard Has Taken Off His Considering Cap! An Anthropological Critique Of The Disease Model Of Alcoholism, Miranda Black

Theses & ETDs

Chronic alcohol addiction is a condition which manifests in social behaviors as well as biological consequences. Excessive drinking has not always been interpreted with the negative connotations which it bears today. Alcohol has existed in prehistoric cultures not only as a leisurely commodity but as a relic of religious, medicinal, and social rituals. This thesis concerns the role of alcohol use in the United States, focusing on how it came to be stigmatized and how the cultural phenomenon of medicalizing alcohol addiction alleviated, altered, but also in some ways re-invented stigmatization of the alcoholic. Through waves of social myth-making and …

On The Hem Of Heresy, Kyra Berman-Gestring Jan 2013

On The Hem Of Heresy, Kyra Berman-Gestring

Theses & ETDs

The exclusive division of public and private realms carries gendered social, political and historical implications. The persisting distinction of "high," masculine, fine art, from "low," feminine, applied craft has normalized patriarchal traditions in the American canon. Feminist interventionism challenges the stereotypical perspective of artist as male, genius and individual and art as non-utilitarian and antisocial. In my exhibition thread, textiles and tactual engagement challenge residual dogmatic conventions. The incorporation of craft traditions invokes historically gendered hierarchies, upsetting boundaries between "high" arts, characterized by concept and aesthetics, and "low" arts, characterized by labor and utility. Using embroidery, quilting and other sewn …

To Be (Or Not To Be) Matses Belonging, Trials Of Assimilation And Changing Morality In The Peruvian Amazon, Lorna Hadlock Jan 2013

To Be (Or Not To Be) Matses Belonging, Trials Of Assimilation And Changing Morality In The Peruvian Amazon, Lorna Hadlock

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is based on seven months of ethnographic fieldwork in two annexes of the Communidad Nativa Matsés (CONAMA) in the Peruvian Amazon. Focusing on narratives and observations of encounters between Matsés and non-Matsés, I dissect belonging, processes of assimilation, and changing morality. I begin with historical information about rubber-boom era altercations, stolen women, and ambiguous relations with non-Matsés prior to "pacified contact" in 1969. Then, I examine glorified stories of the moment of "contact" and relations with Christian missionaries who initiated "contact." Continuing into the present day, I present observations and interviews to document modern interactions and intermarriages between …

Music, Misconception, And Massacre How Simon Bikindi's Music Recontextualized "Hutu" And "Tutsi" And Incited Violence During The 1994 Rwandan Genocide, Lizbeth Hampton Jan 2013

Music, Misconception, And Massacre How Simon Bikindi's Music Recontextualized "Hutu" And "Tutsi" And Incited Violence During The 1994 Rwandan Genocide, Lizbeth Hampton

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis I explore how three songs by Simon Bikindi affected the decision to engage in genocide. After researching the role of the infamous radio station Radio Television Libre des Milles Colines (RTLM) in the 1994 genocide, and learning about Simon Bikindi from that research, I found that I was dissatisfied with the writings that were supposed to be explaining how the words sung by Bikindi and said by broadcasters of RTLM did little more than list what was said and state that it was inflammatory. This thesis aims to fill in the gaps, or at least try to. …

Women's Economic Opportunity And Industrial Development In Brazil And Argentina, Laura Libby Jan 2013

Women's Economic Opportunity And Industrial Development In Brazil And Argentina, Laura Libby

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines gender equity in Brazil and Argentina by studying the subtopic of female economic opportunity. In this comparative study, the questions asked are if, and how, the diverse industrial economic development patterns of Brazil and Argentina have influenced female economic opportunity. Additionally, how these economic opportunities have or have not impacted the livelihood and agency of women in these two nations is discussed. Utilizing economic and gender theory, the economic opportunity of women in this paper is measured through six indices of equality, gender and development, such as the GEO, HDI, WEO and others. The historical context of …

Christ And The Clue Of History: Lesslie Newbigin's Christocentric Philosophy Of History As The Central Thread Of His Thought., Kyle Brooks Jan 2013

Christ And The Clue Of History: Lesslie Newbigin's Christocentric Philosophy Of History As The Central Thread Of His Thought., Kyle Brooks

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

As early as his 1941 Bangalore Lectures, “The Kingdom of God and the Idea of Progress,” Newbigin took a hard look directly at history itself and its various interpreters. In those four lectures at the age of 32, Newbigin laid the foundation for all of his critical theological thinking for the next half century. While Newbigin scholarship is still relatively fresh, it appears that expositors of his work have neglected a, if not the, central motif in his immense corpus: his philosophy of history. I will attempt provide a systematic account of Newbigin’s incredibly consistent thoughts on the topic of …

Understanding School Genres Using Systemic Functional Linguistics: A Study Of Science And Narrative Texts, Allison D. Canfield Jan 2013

Understanding School Genres Using Systemic Functional Linguistics: A Study Of Science And Narrative Texts, Allison D. Canfield

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to examine elementary level textbooks (grades 2-4; Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing; The Trophies Collection) using Systemic Functional Linguistics as the theoretical framework to study the different types of lexical choice and grammatical options made in the textbooks. The two genres examined are science and narrative, which are significantly different from each other. Science texts are “information based,” and narrative texts, “story based.” It is very important for teachers to understand how the genres are different so that they can convey those differences to their students.

The two school genres, science and narrative, differ from …

Emotion Meaning-Making: Identity, Discourse And Social Interaction Among Arab Immigrant Healthcare Providers, Anne Katz Jan 2013

Emotion Meaning-Making: Identity, Discourse And Social Interaction Among Arab Immigrant Healthcare Providers, Anne Katz

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation sought to deepen understandings of emotion and its role in human personal and social life by exploring how a group of Arab immigrant health care providers, involved in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in one clinic in the United States, assign meaning to emotion. Affectively charged and fluid, often involving conditions of disruption and dislocation, the experience of migration offers a fertile place in which to examine the roles that social and interpretive practices play in constituting emotional experience. Due to increases in patterns of migration associated with globalization, mental health diagnoses are often arrived at …
