Just Punch My Bankruptcy Ticket: A Qualitative Study Of Mandatory Debtor Financial Education, 97 Marquette Law Review 391 (2014), Michael D. Sousa
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
When Congress amended the Bankruptcy Code in 2005 through the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA), it mandated that individual consumer debtors undergo two debtor education courses, one as a condition precedent to filing for bankruptcy relief, and a second for later receiving a discharge of indebtedness. As for the pre-filing credit counseling course, Congressional aim was to have prospective debtors understand the potential alternatives to filing for bankruptcy relief with the goal of having some percentage of debtors settle their debt obligations outside of the bankruptcy system. Regarding the post-filing financial management course, Congress wanted debtors who …

Public Buildings And Civic Benefactions In Western Rough Cilicia: Insights From Signaling Theory, Luann Wandsnider
Public Buildings And Civic Benefactions In Western Rough Cilicia: Insights From Signaling Theory, Luann Wandsnider
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In the Hellenistic and Roman world of the eastern Mediterranean, Greek and Greco-Roman cities came to be defined by their physical cityscape. These buildings were constructed by specific city institutions, such as the council and the assembly, and financed through city funds, mass subscription and, importantly, public benefactions. Public benefactions, which also included support for festivals and competitions, were made by certain elite and usually wealthy individuals to the benefit of a defined community of citizens (and sometimes non-citizens, as in the case of fortification walls). Institutions within the benefiting community, again the council and the assembly, acknowledged these gifts …

The Impact Of Living In A Mixed-Status Family On K-12 Students, Allison Mass
Honors Capstones
The Impact of Living in a Mixed-Status Family on K-12 Students is important because itexamines a serious issue confronting today’s schools— the experiences and needs of students living in mixed-status families, which are often not considered by educators. The significant number of students in today’s schools who are either undocumented themselves or directly impacted by a parent who is undocumented calls on teachers and administrators, regardless of their personal beliefs on immigration, to learn about the needs of these students, the challenges they face, and what can be done to help them. This is a review of the current literature …

Hawaiian Forest Birds: The Past, Present And Future Status Of An Endangered Avifauna, Dennis A. Lapointe, Carter T. Atkinson, Paul C. Banko, Richard J. Camp, P. Marcos Gorresen, James D. Jacobi, Thane K. Pratt, Michael D. Samuel
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The Hawaiian forest birds are among the most endangered avifauna of the world. Entire bird groups have disappeared from the Hawaiian Islands, and of the more than fifty, historically-known species of Hawaiian honeycreeper, only 17 remain. Due to the extreme geographical isolation, few birds colonized the Hawaiian Islands but, released from direct competition, predation, and disease, these founders flourished and evolved amid the heterogeneous geography of the archipelago. This process of colonization and speciation is best characterized by the honeycreepers; the largest radiation of endemic forest birds in the Hawaiian Islands, or for that matter, birds on any oceanic archipelago. …

Flirting With Conversion: Negotiating Researcher Non-Belief With Missionaries, Hillary K. Crane
Faculty Publications
This article discusses Crane’s research in a Taiwanese Buddhist monastery. Crane came to the field as a former Catholic, which provided a particular lens through which to perceive the phenomena she researched. Beyond the difficulties of having one's research interests misinterpreted by the community one is researching and the ambiguities that result from remaining open to conversion when studying religious communities, Crane examines the further difficulty confronted when researching religious personnel who have an interest in representing their religious ideals both to and through the researcher. The article examines Crane’s time in the Buddhist monastery and explores her personal ambivalence …

The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia
The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The number of Asian American families is on the rise. Asian American families are a diverse group. This chapter focuses on Asian American families that migrated to the United States in the last three decades. This chapter challenges the media’s depiction of them as a Model Minority. Because of this stereotype, many challenges that this group encounters may not gain adequate attention. The chapter examines their strengths and resiliency, along with the ecology of stress that influences family dynamics.

Religious Interfaith Work In Canada And South Africa With Particular Focus On The Drafting Of A South African Charter Of Religious Rights And Freedoms, I Benson
Law Papers and Journal Articles
Constitutional protections for religious freedom (and related freedoms of conscience, belief and association and equality), once interpreted by courts and tribunals, apply in a precedential manner to future cases. They have an influence well beyond the particular community to which they first applied. For this reason, religious communities have increasingly banded together and sought to intervene or even, on occasion, to initiate legal actions asserting or defending their rights. This article reviews some of the principles around the freedom of religion as understood in South Africa and Canada to show how courts have understood the freedom of religion in its …

'Our Opinion Is In Accordance With The Eucharist': Irenaeus And The Sitz Im Leben Of Mark's Gospel, Charles A. Bobertz
School of Theology and Seminary Faculty Publications
This article explores Irenaeus of Lyon’s 2nd century understanding of Eucharist in relation to a historical and theological reading of Mark’s Gospel, specifically the feeding narrative cycles (Mark 6:30-52; 8:1-21). Irenaeus contends, most particularly in books IV and V of Adversus haereses, that the union of divine spirit and flesh in the humanity of Jesus and its replication in the Eucharistic bread serves as primary refutation of docetic heretics. Jesus was, and his Eucharistic body is, fully a part of creation in contrast to only a spiritual entity. Similarly Mark’s understanding of Eucharist linked to the …

Are Print Books Dead? An Investigation Of Book Circulation At A Mid-Sized Academic Library, Lisa Rose-Wiles
Are Print Books Dead? An Investigation Of Book Circulation At A Mid-Sized Academic Library, Lisa Rose-Wiles
Library Publications
I analyzed circulation of print books at Seton Hall University Libraries using the WorldCat Analysis tool and Voyager data. Only 21.5% of our collection circulated between 2005 and 2009, but circulation varied by subject area. Circulation was higher for subjects with more current collections. Over one-third of recent science books circulated, while older science books had low circulation. Print book circulation declined by 23% between 2005 and 2009. Results of this study informed collection development and prompted a comprehensive weeding project, participation in an international scholarly reading study, and an e-book, patron-driven acquisition program.

Written To The Lamanites: Understanding The Book Of Mormon Through Native Culture And Religion, Gary P. Gillum
Written To The Lamanites: Understanding The Book Of Mormon Through Native Culture And Religion, Gary P. Gillum
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Latter-day Saints have always been encouraged to seek the truth wherever it can be found. With the Book of Mormon being written especially to the Lamanites, we can assume that the more we know about Lamanite and Native American culture, the more we can understand, appreciate and gain insights as we read that inspired scripture. In this article the writer has compared examples from Native American culture and history to what we read in the Book of Mormon and experience as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most importantly, as we read through the eyes of …
