Going From The Pact To The Soul: Exploring A Metaphysical Journey, Anna Pelli Mar 2013

Going From The Pact To The Soul: Exploring A Metaphysical Journey, Anna Pelli

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The story of the Pact of unity between Chiara Lubich and Igino Giordani, which was the prelude to Chiara’s mystical experience in the summer of 1949, concludes with the introduction of something new arising from the Pact: the Soul. Chiara describes it as “the bond between us,” the “space” where the multiplication of the one and the unification of the many is both actualized and explained. This article explores the conceptual development of thought about this issue. Pelli looks at the development of metaphysics over the centuries, investigating the One-many relationship emblematic of the cultural and spiritual history of the …

Cultural Behavior In Post-Urbanized Brazil: The Cordial Man And Intrafamilial Conflict, Thais La Rosa Mar 2013

Cultural Behavior In Post-Urbanized Brazil: The Cordial Man And Intrafamilial Conflict, Thais La Rosa

Dissertations and Theses

Cultures, subcultures, and individuals occupy different positions in the low-context/individualistic and the high-context/collectivistic spectrum, and they shift due to factors such as urbanization, economic development and cultural globalization. In this study, I examine Sérgio Buarque de Holanda's theory of the cordial man and how it illustrates qualities of the high-context Brazilian culture. Within the framework of grounded theory, these qualities are evaluated from the perspective of intergenerational dyads--fathers and sons--that have been exposed to an urbanized and globalized environment in order to determine whether and how a shift from high-context to low-context is occurring. The participants were interviewed to explore …

Cultural Identity, Deafness And Sign Language: A Postcolonial Approach, Steven Loughran Mar 2013

Cultural Identity, Deafness And Sign Language: A Postcolonial Approach, Steven Loughran

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

Franz Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks describes the experience of the recently de-colonized members of the Negro (as he refers to those of African descent) population living in Europe, particularly France, in the 1960s. A little over a decade later, Edward Said published Orientalism, thus adding to a growing discipline of scholarship in the fields of art, literature, and cultural studies called “Postcolonialism.” My essay attempts to show that Deaf persons who communicate with each other using sign language can be viewed as a colonized group, and that applying postcolonial theory to the study of their culture is appropriate.

Understanding The Role Of Social Capital And School Structure On Latino Academic Success, Jeremiah Gonzalez Mar 2013

Understanding The Role Of Social Capital And School Structure On Latino Academic Success, Jeremiah Gonzalez

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

This paper investigates the role of social capital and school structure on the academic success of Latino students. A review of the literature on previous explanations of Latino failure, research on academically successful Latinos, and the role of social capital and school structure on Latino academic success are investigated. The research shows that the way students are tracked in school plays an important role in gaining access to school agents and other academically successful peers. These relationships give access to social capital and increase college access. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

Unbelief, Lawlessness, And Satan: Viewing The Freer Logion As A Scribal Response To Open- Ended Eschatological Themes In Mark, Seth Clark Mar 2013

Unbelief, Lawlessness, And Satan: Viewing The Freer Logion As A Scribal Response To Open- Ended Eschatological Themes In Mark, Seth Clark

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

The focus of my study is to demonstrate that major variants in the text of Early Christian Literature were purposely inserted into the text in light of theological controversies by scribes who represented a certain perspective on behalf of an Early Christian community. The text on which this paper is focused is the ending of the Gospel of Mark and the major textual variant known as the “Freer Logion.” I will argue that the Freer Logion was purposely inserted to conclude themes that were left open by the author of Mark and not addressed by the scribe who inserted the …

A Statistical Analysis Of Public Sector Corruption And Economic Growth, Kaycea Campbell Mar 2013

A Statistical Analysis Of Public Sector Corruption And Economic Growth, Kaycea Campbell

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

This study reports on the results of a statistical analysis in which the relationship between the independent variable of corruption, as measured by the World Bank, and the dependent variable of economic growth, as measured by percentage of GDP growth per year, was examined. The purpose of this study is to apply empirical methods to the debate on corruption and growth, in which neoclassical theory predicts that corruption retards growth but in which other models, such as Lewis growth and the Kuznets Curve, suggest that corruption may actually speed up growth in underdeveloped countries. The main finding of the study …

An Anthropological Reflection On Lu Xun'sOld Tales Retold, Lili Liu Mar 2013

An Anthropological Reflection On Lu Xun'sOld Tales Retold, Lili Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper takes an interdisciplinary perspective and tries to present an anthropological reflection on the stories in Lu Xun's Old Tales Retold. For Lu Xun, the stories were important, especially the old stories in the ancient classics, and he creatively rewrote the classical stories to get across what he wanted to convey. In his rewriting, Lu Xun combined materials from many classics so as to make the retold stories take on artistic features of creative stories. Lu Xun's Old Tales Retold merged well into the development of fiction writing in Chinese literary history, which evolved from the antique myth and …

Chinese Images In English Poetry: A Comparative Reading Between Literary Fictionalization And Western Consciousness, Fanjian Zeng, Hanbo Liu Mar 2013

Chinese Images In English Poetry: A Comparative Reading Between Literary Fictionalization And Western Consciousness, Fanjian Zeng, Hanbo Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

English poetry has a longstanding tradition in creating images about China. The images, from the perspective of literary anthropology by Wolfgang Iser, cannot be freed from interrelated unity of opposites between fictionalization, imagination and facts. While fictionalization and imagination are essential to poetry, their foundation and destination have to be the facts about China and the subjectivity of the Western. If native Chinese poetics is applied into a comparative reading of the images of China in English poetry, especially by focusing on the subject-object relationship shown in literary fictionalization and the Western consciousness through an empirical study based on linguistic …

Network Firewall Dynamics And The Subsaturation Stabilization Of Hiv, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski, Mohamed Saad, Katherine Mclean, Samuel Friedman Mar 2013

Network Firewall Dynamics And The Subsaturation Stabilization Of Hiv, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski, Mohamed Saad, Katherine Mclean, Samuel Friedman

Publications and Research

In 2001, Friedman et al. conjectured the existence of a “firewall effect” in which individuals who are infected with HIV, but remain in a state of low infectiousness, serve to prevent the virus from spreading. To evaluate this historical conjecture, we develop a new graph-theoreticmeasure that quantifies the extent towhich Friedman’s firewall hypothesis (FH) holds in a risk network. We compute this new measure across simulated trajectories of a stochastic discrete dynamical system that models a social network of 25,000 individuals engaging in risk acts over a period of 15 years. The model’s parameters are based on analyses of data collected …

Revolution Or Evolution: The Development Of The Concern For The Preservation Of Information Uncovered During Archaeological Excavations In Israel And Palestine (1890-1980), Leif Fredheim Mar 2013

Revolution Or Evolution: The Development Of The Concern For The Preservation Of Information Uncovered During Archaeological Excavations In Israel And Palestine (1890-1980), Leif Fredheim

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The ICCROM conference of 1983 in Nicosia represents a turning point in the profession of archaeological conservation; here it was expressed that conservators no longer were concerned only with the preservation of excavated objects, but also with archaeological information. This study of the development of concern for the preservation of information from archaeological excavations in Palestine traces the discipline from Flinders Petrie’s first stratigraphic excavation in the region at the end of the nineteenth century to the heyday of American processual archaeology. Special attention is paid to the development of professionalism in the discipline, as made evident by the archaeologists’ …

Terrains Of Terror And Modern Apparatuses Of Destruction: Organ Transplantation, Markets, And The Commoditized Kidney, Ayan Kassim Mar 2013

Terrains Of Terror And Modern Apparatuses Of Destruction: Organ Transplantation, Markets, And The Commoditized Kidney, Ayan Kassim

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Recent innovations in biomedicine and medical technologies within the last 40 years have altered understandings of the body and its parts; burgeoning global markets in organs is symptomatic of this. Although procurement policies by most nations solicit organs through donation only, lengthy wait lists have prompted the fiscally privileged sick to pursue other means of survival. In light of the current global realities of kidney trafficking in particular, this paper considers the following questions: How and why has the kidney become a commodity? In what historical moment did a kidney market emerge? What and who are the key actors in …

Dyke, A Quarterly: Blogging An Online Annotated Archive, Liza Cowan

Women's History in the Digital World

DYKE A Quarterly of Lesbian Culture and Analysis, was published from NY City in the mid 1970s. Editors Liza Cowan and Penny House created a magazine that was as beautiful as it was radical, and as personal as it was political. After it ceased publication in 1978, it languished in private collections until, in 2010, curators from The Library of The Museum of Modern Art and The Schlesinger Library requested copies and papers.

While Cowan was doing graduate studies in anthropology in the 1990s, she was horrified to discover that scholars were depending on secondary source material to write about …

At The Nexus Of Scholarly Communication And Information Literacy, Marianne A. Buehler, Anne E. Zald Mar 2013

At The Nexus Of Scholarly Communication And Information Literacy, Marianne A. Buehler, Anne E. Zald

Library Faculty Research

Introduction

Graduate students embarking upon a new phase in their educational careers may not realize the range of expectations, particularly the cocurricular or extracurricular expectation to participate in the scholarly communication process. Unforeseen faculty expectations may include a requirement to publish or copublish an article in order to pass a graduate course or to engage in grant-funded research that will result in conference presentations or publications. Learning about the publication process provides a key transitional experience between the independent intellectual endeavor of conducting research for course assignments and the social dynamics of being a professional researcher or scholar, interacting with …
