Blood And Atonement In The Book Of Mormon From A Near Eastern Perspective, Michael Biggerstaff, Dr. Jared Ludlow
Blood And Atonement In The Book Of Mormon From A Near Eastern Perspective, Michael Biggerstaff, Dr. Jared Ludlow

“Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ; for, for this end hath the law of Moses been given; and all things which have been given of God from the beginning of the world, unto man, are the typifying of him” (2 Nephi 11:4). These words of Nephi, concerning the Law of Moses typifying Christ, are echoed by several other Book of Mormon authors, including Lehi, Jacob, Jarom, King Benjamin, Abinadi, Amulek, and Mormon. More authors could be added to this list if it included those who spoke of Christ’s fulfilling of …

Printed Pattern The Study Of Pattern Through Ancient Egyptian Art, Michelle Sorensen, Adrian Pulfer
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Pattern design is widely popular and used throughout the world. Patterns have also been used since the beginning of time. They can be seen in blankets, clothing, rugs, and paintings throughout history. For my study of patterns I looked to an unusual resource—ancient Egypt. Egypt has had immense influence in the modern world, from architecture to fashion. But I wanted to look at Egyptian art with the focus of patterns and the purpose behind their use. Was there calculated purpose behind the use of patterns? Or were they used to merely fill up space? Did the Egyptians have a unique …

The role of Wnt signaling in embryonic development and stem cell maintenance is well established and aberrations leading to the constitutive up-regulation of this pathway are frequent in several types of human cancers. Upon ligand-mediated activation, Wnt receptors promote the stabilization of β-catenin, which translocates to the nucleus and binds to the T-cell factor/lymphoid enhancer factor (TCF/LEF) family of transcription factors to regulate the expression of Wnt target genes. When not bound to β-catenin, the TCF/LEF proteins are believed to act as transcriptional repressors. Using a specific lentiviral reporter, we identified hematopoietic tumor cells displaying constitutive TCF/LEF transcriptional activation in …

Anything But Common: The Role Of Louisiana’S Civilian Tradition In The Development Of Federal Civil Rights Jurisprudence Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Jared Bianchi
Journal of Civil Law Studies
The famed Slaughterhouse Cases were the first cases to interpret the Fourteenth Amendment. Those cases arose from a Louisiana controversy. This essay suggests that Fourteenth Amendment jurisprudence, including Substantive Due Process, is rooted in the civilian private law tradition as received in Louisiana and as argued by the butchers in the Slaughterhouse Cases. The essay explores the civil law roots of the Privileges and Immunities Clause, beginning with the Twelve Tables and the Code of Justinian. The essay explores how those early codes were appreciated by subsequent Louisiana jurists, and how the civil law approach became an integral part …
Brand Kerala: Commodification Of Open Source Ayurveda, Chithprabha Kudlu
Brand Kerala: Commodification Of Open Source Ayurveda, Chithprabha Kudlu
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation aimed to understand formal and informal ayurvedic knowledge and practice through the framework of commodification, in the context of the recent emergence of global ayurvedic tourism in Kerala, India. The objective was to understand how commodification, both old and new, have affected knowledges and livelihoods of actors constituting the ayurvedic commodity chain, with a focus on `social lives' of ayurvedic pharmaceuticals and select herb-ingredients. I argue that the trajectory of commodification in Kerala provides a stark contrast to the national mainstream with its focus on classical vis-à-vis proprietary medicines. This therapy-centric business model maintained the integrity of traditional …

Here, we developed a model system to evaluate the metabolic effects of oncogene(s) on the host microenvironment. A matched set of "normal" and oncogenically transformed epithelial cell lines were co-cultured with human fibroblasts, to determine the "bystander" effects of oncogenes on stromal cells. ROS production and glucose uptake were measured by FACS analysis. In addition, expression of a panel of metabolic protein biomarkers (Caveolin-1, MCT1, and MCT4) was analyzed in parallel. Interestingly, oncogene activation in cancer cells was sufficient to induce the metabolic reprogramming of cancer-associated fibroblasts toward glycolysis, via oxidative stress. Evidence for "metabolic symbiosis" between oxidative cancer cells …
Intra And Extracellular Functions Of Sphingosine-1-Phosphate In Sterile Inflammation., Jessie Yester
Intra And Extracellular Functions Of Sphingosine-1-Phosphate In Sterile Inflammation., Jessie Yester
Theses and Dissertations
Sterile inflammation is a key component of a variety of diseases including, gout, arthritis, type 1 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis (MS). Sterile inflammation induces the recruitment of immune cells via chemokines, such as CCL5 and CXCL10. Expression of these chemokines is dependent on IRF-1. Recently the FDA has approved the use of a pro-drug, FTY720 that after phosphorylation becomes a S1P mimetic for the treatment of MS. This report describes two novel and opposing mechanisms of S1P action in sterile inflammation. First, intracellular S1P acts as a cofactor of cIAP2 that inducesIL-1-dependent K63-polyubiquitination of IRF-1, which leads to …

Engineering Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Materials To Promote Cardiogenesis, Amanda Walker Smith
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and the current costs of treatment put a significant economic burden on our societies. After an infarction, fibrotic tissue begins to form as part of the heart failure cascade. Current options to slow this process include a wide range of pharmaceutical agents, and ultimately the patient may require a heart transplant. Innovative treatment approaches are needed to bring down costs and improve quality of life. The possibility of regenerating or replacing damaged tissue with healthy cardiomyocytes is generating considerable excitement, but there are still many obstacles to overcome. First, …

We as human beings inherently strive to live the best life that we possibly can. We all want to be happy. Many times we see happiness in terms of what and how much we posses. This story is about how we don't always need the biggest and the best to be happy. The simple things in life are the ones that matter.
Through this paper I will document my process in the making of my thesis animation "The Apple Tree". I will discuss how my main character Zach, discovers through his interaction with a magical apple tree, that biggest isn't …
Generating High Purity Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Cell Populations For Transplantation Following Spinal Cord Injury, Dylan A. Mccreedy
Generating High Purity Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Cell Populations For Transplantation Following Spinal Cord Injury, Dylan A. Mccreedy
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Embryonic stem cells hold great potential for cell replacement strategies in the central nervous system. Pre-differentiation into various neural cell types can help generate tissue-specific cell populations that can replace cells and tissue lost due to do injury or disease. A small number of undifferentiated pluripotent stem cells persist in most transplant populations even after pre-differentiation. Given the right environment, i.e. biomaterial scaffolds, these cells can lead to tumor formation thereby eliminating any potential therapeutic benefit. This dissertation focused on the development of high purity embryonic stem cell-derived cell populations devoid of pluripotent stem cells for transplantation into the central …
Type 1 Diabetes And The Male Reproductive Axis, Erica Schoeller
Type 1 Diabetes And The Male Reproductive Axis, Erica Schoeller
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Glucose regulation is important in both spermatogenesis as well as mature sperm function. The impact of diabetes on sperm function is becoming increasingly clear, though much work is still needed to elucidate the mechanism by which diabetes impairs spermatogenesis. Diabetes causes disruptions in the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal (HPG) axis, the regulatory system that controls reproduction. The HPG axis functions by secreting GnRH pulses from the hypothalamus, which bind to receptors on the pituitary and cause secretion of follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, which then bind to receptors in the testes and facilitate spermatogenesis. Type 1 diabetes can severely impact …
Assessing Optic Neuritis In A Mouse Model Of Multiple Sclerosis With Diffusion Mr Imaging, Chia-Wen Chiang
Assessing Optic Neuritis In A Mouse Model Of Multiple Sclerosis With Diffusion Mr Imaging, Chia-Wen Chiang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Optic neuritis (ON) is an early manifestation in patients of multiple sclerosis (MS), typically resulting in visual dysfunction. The inflammatory demyelination of the optic nerve in ON closely resembles pathologies of the rest of central nervous system (CNS) white matter in MS. Since accumulated axonal degeneration in MS was considered as the potential cause leading to permanent disability, correlating optic nerve pathology and visual function in ON could be a model system to investigate the relationship between functional outcome and neuropathology. It may also present a new way to reflect the disease progression in MS. Various MR techniques have been …
Post-Translational Regulation Of Fas-Mediated Pparα Activation, Anne Patricia Louise Jensen-Urstad
Post-Translational Regulation Of Fas-Mediated Pparα Activation, Anne Patricia Louise Jensen-Urstad
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The liver is a central organ to whole-body metabolism and mediates many of the adaptive responses to changes in nutrient availability, such that the appropriate energy sources are used and blood glucose levels maintained, whether directly after a meal or after a twelve-hour fast. The adaptive responses to fasting in liver are largely mediated by the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α, or PPARα. PPARα can be activated by a de novo synthesized lipid ligand—16:0/18:1- glycerophosphocholine (16:0/18:1-GPC)—the synthesis of which is dependent on fatty acid synthase (FAS), but little is known about the regulation of this pathway. My thesis focused …

Forty Years Of Epikarst: What Biology Have We Learned?, Tanja Pipan, David Culver
International Journal of Speleology
Epikarst is not only an important component of the hydrogeology of karst and an active site of speleogenesis, it is habitat for a number of species adapted to subterranean life. Water in epikarst, with a residence time of days to months, is a highly heterogeneous habitat, and the animals are primarily sampled from continuously sampling dripping water or collecting from residual drip pools. While the subterranean fauna of cracks and crevices has been known for over 100 years, it is only in the past several decades that epikarst has been recognized as a distinct habitat, with reproducing populations of stygobionts. …

Spatial And Temporal Changes In Invertebrate Assemblage Structure From The Entrance To Deep-Cave Zone Of A Temperate Marble Cave, Benjamin W. Tobin, Benjamin T. Hutchins, Benjamin F. Schwartz
International Journal of Speleology
Seasonality in surface weather results in seasonal temperature and humidity changes in caves. Ecological and physiological differences among trogloxenes, troglophiles, and troglobionts result in species-dependent responses to this variability. To investigate these responses, we conducted five biological inventories in a marble cave in the Sierra Nevada Range, California, USA between May and December, 2010. The cave was divided into six quadrats and temperature was continuously logged in each (humidity was logged at the entrance and in the deep cave). With increasing distance from the entrance, temperature changes were increasingly attenuated and lagged relative to surface temperature. Linear regressions were created …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory, demyelinating and degenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS). While etiology of the disease remains unknown, genetic susceptibility and autoimmune mechanisms in the initiation and progression of the disease have been strongly suggested. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is commonly used to study immune regulation of MS. Infiltration by CD4+ T cells, through blood-brain barrier (BBB), precedes the onset and relapses of MS. CNS migration and homing patterns of T cells are tightly synchronized by astrocyte and microglia derived cytokines and chemokines. Autoimmune, CNS antigenreactive, infiltrating T cells produce and locally release …

Covalent Solutions To Biofilm Formation: Incorporation Of Antimicrobial Ceragenins Into Polymer-Brush Coatings, Jeffrey Clark, Dr. Paul Savage
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The accumulation of biofilm on urinary catheters and endotracheal tubes is one of the leading causes of hospital-acquired infection1. A variety of techniques have been developed to help mitigate this problem. One of these techniques is to coat devices with a biofilm-resistant polymer brush coating. Although these coatings may prevent adhesion by bacteria, they do not actively kill invading bacteria.

The constant reliance on fossil fuel energy resources is unsustainable, due to both depleting world reserves and increasing green house gas emissions associated with their use and thus there are dynamic research at the global level envisioned at developing alternative renewable and potentially carbon neutral solid, liquid and gaseous biofuels as alternative energy resources. The contemporary knowledge and technology predictions have proved that among the third generation biofuels especially those derived from microalgae are considered the best reasonable alternative energy resource compared to undeniable drawbacks of first and second generation biofuels. Moreover, its efficiency to sequester carbon from the atmosphere …

A Speculative Approach To Parallelization In Particle Swarm Optimization, Matthew Gardner, Dr. Kevin Seppi
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Optimization problems are ubiquitous in our modern world. Businesses such as Google need to decide where to place ads, scientists need to t models to data, and airlines need to schedule their flights. All of these problems are optimization problems, and optimization techniques can be used to find solutions. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a relatively new optimization technique that draws on ideas from the sociology of flocking birds. It was originally developed for use on a single machine, and attempts at modifying the algorithm to run in parallel are still quite preliminary. However, the problems people want to solve …

This project aims at the collective definition of social design. The process of exploring this definition is considered a workshop that gets people involved and passionate. In this process there are various elements that represented tangible reference points and draw to defined public spaces in the city and central at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Social Design is a well-established term and has various forms of interpretations. Though this project aims to understand more about these interpretations. To achieve this, individuals were animated to think about the term ‘design’ and involved in defining new paradigms. This was done with …
