Relationships Of Hydrological And Soil Conditions To Red Oak Acorn Yield In The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley And Mississippi Interior Flatwoods Regions, Jonathan E. Sloan
Relationships Of Hydrological And Soil Conditions To Red Oak Acorn Yield In The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley And Mississippi Interior Flatwoods Regions, Jonathan E. Sloan
Theses and Dissertations
Red oak (Quercus spp.) acorns provide food for wildlife and are propagules for regeneration of these trees. Annual yield of acorns varies temporally and site-specifically. I examined acorn yield in relation to hydrology and soils of hardwood bottomlands at five sites in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley and a site in the Mississippi Interior Flatwoods Region during fall-winter 2012-2013. Acorn yield varied among sites (mean = 44.9 acorns/m2; SE = 6.7; CV = 14.9%). Duration of flooding during the growing season differed among sites which influenced soil characteristics. Acorn yield varied inversely with number of days sites were inundated during the …
Somatic Culture And Induced Mutations Of Giant Miscanthus (Miscanthus X Giganteus), Dinum Perera
Somatic Culture And Induced Mutations Of Giant Miscanthus (Miscanthus X Giganteus), Dinum Perera
Theses and Dissertations
Exploiting induced genetic diversity through using mutagenesis is particularly important in giant miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus; Mxg) due to its restricted genetic variability. Experiments were conducted to develop an efficient in vitro propagation protocol for Mxg, induce mutations in Mxg using a chemical mutagen, and select Mxg in vitro for heat tolerance. To optimize in vitro propagation of Mxg, five explant types [i.e. immature inflorescences, shoot apex (in vitro), shoot apex (greenhouse), leaf explants (in vitro), and leaf explants (greenhouse)] were tested on five media. Shoot forming calli from immature inflorescences, an excellent source of explant in Mxg, grown in …
Factors Affecting Elicitation Of Vocal Response From Coyotes And Population-Level Response To A Pulsed Resource Event, Tyler Robert Petroelje
Factors Affecting Elicitation Of Vocal Response From Coyotes And Population-Level Response To A Pulsed Resource Event, Tyler Robert Petroelje
Theses and Dissertations
Long-distance vocalizations by canids play an important role in communication among individuals. I evaluated efficacy of broadcasted coyote (Canis latrans) group-yip calls and gray wolf (C. lupus) lone howls to elicit vocal responses from 18 GPS-collared coyotes on 144 occasions. I concluded that eliciting coyote vocalizations where wolves are present will not bias responses, and recommend eliciting coyote vocalizations using recorded coyote group-yip howls during July–September to estimate species’ presence or density. From foraging theory, generalist predators should increase consumption of prey if prey availability increases. I estimated densities for coyotes, adult deer, and fawns, and collected coyote scat to …
Functional Analysis Identifies Glycine Max Genes Involved In Defense To Heterodera Glycines, Prachi D. Matsye
Functional Analysis Identifies Glycine Max Genes Involved In Defense To Heterodera Glycines, Prachi D. Matsye
Theses and Dissertations
The infection of plants by Heterodera glycines, commonly known as soybean cyst nematode (SCN), is a serious agricultural problem of worldwide extent. Meanwhile, it provides an excellent experimental model to study basic aspects of how cells function, in particular, during biotic challenge. Heterodera glycines challenges plant cells by initiating, developing and sustaining an interaction that results in the formation of a nurse cell from which the nematode derives nourishment. The presented experiments examine (1) how a cell can be de-differentiated and reprogrammed to perform a much different biological role and (2) how a cell’s immune responses can be engaged or …

Allostatic Load Amplifies The Effect Of Blood Lead Levels On Elevated Blood Pressure Among Middle-Aged U.S. Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study, Ami R. Zota, Edmond R. Shenassa, Rachel Morello-Frosch
Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications
Background
Scientists and regulators have sought to understand whether and how physiologic dysregulation due to chronic stress exposure may enhance vulnerability to the adverse health effects of toxicant exposures. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine whether allostatic load (AL), a composite measure of physiologic response to chronic exposure to stress, amplifies the effect of lead exposure on blood pressure among middle-aged adults.
Methods
We analyzed associations between blood lead levels and blood pressure in a nationally representative sample of 8,194 U.S. adults (aged 40-65 years) participating in the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, 1999--2008. Outcomes were elevated systolic …
Dose- And Time-Dependent Neuroprotective Effects Of Pycnogenol® Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Mubeen A. Ansari, Kelly N. Roberts, Stephen W. Scheff
Dose- And Time-Dependent Neuroprotective Effects Of Pycnogenol® Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Mubeen A. Ansari, Kelly N. Roberts, Stephen W. Scheff
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
After traumatic brain injury (TBI), both primary and secondary injury cascades are initiated, leading to neuronal death and cognitive dysfunction. We have previously shown that the combinational bioflavonoid, Pycnogenol® (PYC), alters some secondary injury cascades and protects synaptic proteins when administered immediately following trauma. The purpose of the present study was to explore further the beneficial effects of PYC and to test whether it can be used in a more clinically relevant fashion. Young adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to a unilateral moderate/severe cortical contusion. Subjects received a single intravenous (i.v.) injection of PYC (1, 5, or 10 mg/kg) …
Modeling The Distribution Of Bobcats And Areas Of Reintroduction For Fisher In The Southern Washington Cascades, Shiloh Michael Halsey
Modeling The Distribution Of Bobcats And Areas Of Reintroduction For Fisher In The Southern Washington Cascades, Shiloh Michael Halsey
Dissertations and Theses
The fisher (Martes pennanti) is a medium sized member of the mustelid family that once roamed the forests of Washington and whose historic range in the western United States once spread throughout the northern Rocky Mountains, the Cascade and Coast Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada (Carroll, Zielinski, and Noss 1999; Powell 1993, Spencer et al. 2011). Due to pressures from trapping and habitat fragmentation, the abundance of the species in the western United States has decreased dramatically and is thought to be limited to several small, isolated populations. In 2008, fishers were reintroduced to the Olympic Peninsula; however, bobcat (Lynx …

The Finest View: Embryology In Four Dimensions, Research Results, Justin N. Craig, Dr. Robert E. Seegmiller
Journal of Undergraduate Research
One of the most complicated and difficult to comprehend organ systems in embryological development is the nervous system. In the study of embryology, one realizes that the understanding of human origin exists and must be studied not only in three dimensions, but also the fourth, i.e. time. The complex folding and sealing of the neural tube, the arching through space and enlargement to form hollow areas for the developing portions of the brain, spinal cord, and neurons, can best be comprehended in a four dimensional manner. One of the greatest mysteries of the human body is still the brain, and …

During my time in Beirut I came to know myself. At first this may seem a very bold, unscholarly statement, perhaps better suited to a magazine essay than a scholastic summary. However, I feel that the best research is that which becomes a part of us, that broadens our view not of our subject only, but of the world as a whole and our role in it. When I applied for and received this scholarship I was expecting to have a purely scholastic experience studying the women’s literature produced during the Lebanese civil war, completely separate from my familial experience …

Significance: Alzheimer disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disease. AD is characterized by progressive cognitive impairment. One of the main histopathological hallmarks of AD brain is the presence of senile plaques (SPs) and another is elevated oxidative stress. The main component of SPs is amyloid beta-peptide (Aβ) that is derived from the proteolytic cleavage of amyloid precursor protein.
Recent Advances: Recent studies are consistent with the notion that methionine present at 35 position of Aβ is critical to Aβ-induced oxidative stress and neurotoxicity. Further, we also discuss the signatures of oxidatively modified brain proteins, identified using redox proteomics approaches, during …
Regularization Of Dynamic Time Warping Barycenter Averaging, With Applications In Sign Classification, John A.W.B. Costanzo
Regularization Of Dynamic Time Warping Barycenter Averaging, With Applications In Sign Classification, John A.W.B. Costanzo
Theses
Sign language synthesis is a useful tool in addressing many of the issues faced by deaf communities. Sign languages are as different from spoken languages as spoken languages are from each other, and hence deaf persons raised learning sign language are not automatically proficient in communicating in written language. Existing methods of generating signing avatars are clunky and often unintuitive; hence the ability to classify gestures common to sign language using only data recorded by video would simplify the process dramatically.
Methods of gesture classification require a way to compare time series, and often (in particular, for k-means clustering) require …

Effects Of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation In A Rat-Model Of Human Depression, Brian J. Higginbotham, Dr. Erin Bigler
Effects Of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation In A Rat-Model Of Human Depression, Brian J. Higginbotham, Dr. Erin Bigler
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a relatively new technology that extends the ability to noninvasively stimulate cortical brain structures (Walsh and Rushworth, 1999). TMS involves placing an electromagnet on the scalp and turning it rapidly on and off through the discharge of capacitors, thereby producing a time-varying magnetic field that passes unimpeded through the skull and soft tissue. This altering magnetic field induces a changing electric field, which causes current flow in cortical tissue, resulting in neuronal depolarization.

The Mechanics Of Intracranial Loading During Blast And Blunt Impacts: Experimental And Numerical Studies, Veera Selvan Kuppuswamy
The Mechanics Of Intracranial Loading During Blast And Blunt Impacts: Experimental And Numerical Studies, Veera Selvan Kuppuswamy
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Head injuries in an explosion occur as a result of a sudden pressure changes (e.g. shock-blast) in the atmosphere (primary injury), high velocity impacts of debris (secondary injury) and people being thrown against the solid objects (tertiary injury) in the field. In this thesis, experimental and numerical approaches are used to delineate the intracranial loading mechanics of both primary (blast) and tertiary injuries (blunt).
The blast induced head injuries are simulated using a fluid-filled cylinder. This simplified model represents the head-brain complex and the model is subjected to a blast with the Friedlander waveform type of loading. We measured the …

Plant genetic engineering, which has led to the production of plant-derived monoclonal antibodies (mAb(P)s), provides a safe and economically effective alternative to conventional antibody expression methods. In this study, the expression levels and biological properties of the anti-rabies virus mAb(P) SO57 with or without an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-retention peptide signal (Lys-Asp-Glu-Leu; KDEL) in transgenic tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum) were analyzed. The expression levels of mAb(P) SO57 with KDEL (mAb(P)K) were significantly higher than those of mAb(P) SO57 without KDEL (mAb(P)) regardless of the transcription level. The Fc domains of both purified mAb(P) and mAb(P)K and hybridoma-derived mAb (mAb(H)) had similar …

Nonadjacent Dependency Learning In Typical Development And Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anthony G. Goodwin
Nonadjacent Dependency Learning In Typical Development And Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anthony G. Goodwin
Doctoral Dissertations
In order to acquire some aspects of grammar, such as wh-questions and verb tense agreement, children must be able to learn nonadjacent dependencies. This type of learning has been demonstrated in both children and adults, but is reported to be difficult. The current study investigated whether children with autism (ASD) would show a similar pattern of nonadjacent dependency learning as seen in typically developing (TD) children, and whether variation in this ability would relate to language levels, sleep habits or characteristics of ASD.
Ten TD children (M age 21.04 months), and ten children with ASD (M age 43.86 months) were …
Exploring Tissue Engineering: Vitamin D3 Influences On The Proliferation And Differentiation Of An Engineered Osteoblast Precursor Cell Line During Early Bone Tissue Development, Shelley S. Mason
Dissertations and Theses
Most of the load-bearing demand placed on the human body is transduced by skeletal tissue, and the capacity of the skeleton to articulate in various opposing directions is essential for body movement and locomotion. Consequently, cartilage and bone defects due to trauma, disease, and developmental abnormalities result in disabling pain and immobility for millions of people worldwide. A novel way of promoting cartilage and bone regeneration is through the incorporation of either primary cells or multipotent progenitor cells in a three-dimensional (3D) biomaterial scaffold, and/or the addition of exogenous growth and differentiation factors. The first part of this study reports …

Critical Success Factors Analysis Of Implementing Mpa At The Yilan Gueishan Island, Taiwan, Ching-Ta Chuang, Jun-Yu Chen, Kuei-Chao Chang, Li-Wen Hung, Ta-Kang Liu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Gueishan Island, located along the strong Kuroshio current, is one of the most essential fishing grounds in Taiwan’s offshore fishery, and critical during its transitional fishery periods. However, long-term pollution, overfishing and rapid coastal development result in overexploitation and adverse environmental and ecological impacts. Previous studies focused on single species fishery management or merely the interpretation relevant laws whereas the views and perceptions of the stakeholders are often overlooked. Therefore, stakeholders’ participation and co-management seem to challenge the future establishment of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Gueishan Island. This study focuses on the evaluation of stakeholders’ perception and analyzes …

Purification And Characterization Of Succinyl Thiokinase From Pig Heart, Shu-Cheng Hsueh, Li-Ying Pan, Ming-Cheng Lee, An-Chin Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In our earlier studies, the concentration of succinate in the body fluid of hard clams was used as an anoxia-stress indicator. The concentration of succinate was monitored by a color kit the key component of which is succinyl thiokinases (STK). Therefore, finding a source of STK is very important for developing the color kit. STK from pig heart was purified over 850-fold to apparent homogeneity. It has a dimeric structure with a relative molecular mass of 69,200, and there are two types of subunits, α and β, with respective apparent molecular weights of 38,000 and 47,000. Among the isolation steps, …
