Integrating Climate Change With Human Land Use Patterns: Archaeology Of Butte Lake Northeast, Michael L. Wendt
Integrating Climate Change With Human Land Use Patterns: Archaeology Of Butte Lake Northeast, Michael L. Wendt
Anthropology
This research explores the effects of climate change throughout the Holocene by investigating a multi-component site at Butte Lake, Alaska. This research combines expectations generated from ethnographic models to evaluate site use conditioned by environmental constraints within the theoretical framework of human behavioral ecology. Analysis of lithic materials, faunal remains, and site structure are evaluated to determine site type by occupational component. The results of this research show that a period of low effective moisture during the early Holocene (9000 to 5000 cal BP), as well as a period of both low temperature and increased effective moisture associated with the …
Social Life And Ritual Practices In An Alaskan Pentecostal Community (The First Assembly Of God, Fairbanks), Nickole Kathren Robarge
Social Life And Ritual Practices In An Alaskan Pentecostal Community (The First Assembly Of God, Fairbanks), Nickole Kathren Robarge
Anthropology
This MA thesis research project focuses on the First Assembly of God Church in Fairbanks, Alaska. It seeks to better understand the implementation of Pentecostal-Charismatic (PC) Christianity in 21st century urban Alaska. While social activism and outreach form a significant portion of the success of Pentecostalism in Alaska (as anywhere else), my research shows that it is also substantially due to the appeal of ritual to newcomers. In particular, I suggest that there are forms of spiritual possession and spirit embodiment that need to be examined in relation to the attractiveness of Pentecostalism in Fairbanks. There is a gap in …

Becoming Adults In A Rural Yup'ik Community: A Longitudinal Qualitative Study Exploring Resilience, Tara J. Ford
Becoming Adults In A Rural Yup'ik Community: A Longitudinal Qualitative Study Exploring Resilience, Tara J. Ford
Psychology
The aim of this study is to explore strategies for navigating challenges in a rural Alaskan Yup'ik community among youth and young adults. This qualitative study captures a longitudinal perspective as youth (N=25; 11 -18 years old) were originally interviewed in January 2010. For the current study, participants were re-interviewed in December 2012. Follow-up interviews addressed life challenges over the past three years and resources that helped them with their hard times. To reinforce the multifaceted nature of growing-up in a rural Yup'ik community, scholarly literature along with observations, conversations with local residents, and local wisdom captured in anthropological work …
Freeze-Thaw Effect On Soil Microbial Activity With Biochar Application In Subarctic Soils, Sunny M. Castillo
Freeze-Thaw Effect On Soil Microbial Activity With Biochar Application In Subarctic Soils, Sunny M. Castillo
Forest Sciences
Alaska has limited agricultural production due to extreme climatic conditions and weakly developed soils, which affect productivity. In higher latitudes, freeze-thaw cycles are common and influence soil biology and nutrient dynamics, offering a unique opportunity to investigate the use of soil amendments like biochar to enhance native biota and soil's intrinsic properties. Biochar for this study was produced from locally harvested black spruce (Picea mariana), using a fixed bed pyrolysis unit. The production of biochar was electronically controlled with temperatures kept at 550°C, and residence times manipulated by a mechanical auger, in order to yield five distinct biochar products. Chemical …
Small-Scale Variability In Benthic Food Webs In The Northeastern Chukchi Sea, Kelley Lannon Tu
Small-Scale Variability In Benthic Food Webs In The Northeastern Chukchi Sea, Kelley Lannon Tu
Marine Biology
Benthic food web structure can differ over large scales across Arctic shelves in relation to hydrographic conditions, but little is known if such differences also may occur on smaller scales in hydrographically complex areas. The length, food sources, trophic composition, and energy distribution of benthic food webs in three study areas in the northeastern Chukchi Sea (i.e., Klondike, Burger, and Statoil, as part of the Chukchi Sea Environmental Studies Program) were compared using stable isotope analysis and bomb calorimetry. Food web length (four trophic levels), food sources, and linear models of food webs were comparable among areas. Marked differences in …
Survival And Activity Patterns Of Snowshoe Hares (Lepus Americanus) In Interior Alaska, Dashiell S. Feierabend
Survival And Activity Patterns Of Snowshoe Hares (Lepus Americanus) In Interior Alaska, Dashiell S. Feierabend
Biological Sciences
Snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) survival depends on the interaction of habitat characteristics with numerous biological and environmental variables. In boreal regions where considerable habitat heterogeneity exists, hares balance food availability with predation risk by moving among habitats seasonally, but it is largely unknown how often they move at shorter time scales. I investigated the seasonal effects of habitat, weather, and individual hare characteristics on survival and movement in two common but fundamentally different boreal habitats. Survival was highest in summer, for hares with higher body condition, and in black spruce rather than early successional forest. Hares moved among core use …

Validation Study Of A Novel Detection Kit For Rapid Detection And Quantification Of Listeria Spp. In Food Samples, Mengying Jiang
Theses and Dissertations
A single tube detection kit was designed as a rapid, easy-to use and reliable test to detect Listeria spp.. Various food samples (vegetables and raw catfish fillets) were used in order to validate the performance of the detection kit. L. grayi was detected in one ready-to-eat (RTE) vegetables with the detection kit while no Listeria spp. was detected using the modified FDA-BAM method. In addition, both the detection kit and modified FDA-BAM method indicated that twelve catfish fillets were Listeria positive. The detection kit had 100% sensitivity and specificity in less detection time (24 h) than the modified FDA-BAM method …
Anticoagulant Activity Of Inhaled Heparin In The Dog, Jill S. Manion
Anticoagulant Activity Of Inhaled Heparin In The Dog, Jill S. Manion
Theses and Dissertations
Respiratory disease represents an important component of small animal emergency medicine. The morbidity and mortality of respiratory disease and inflammation, although poorly defined, is considered to be significant. Much of the therapy used in the stabilization and management of respiratory disease in veterinary patients has been taken from human medicine, including inhalation therapy. Heparin has been shown to have substantial anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and antiibrotic effects within the lungs when administered via inhalation in human patients. To date, no studies have evaluated the use of nebulized heparin in dogs. This study is the first to attempt to generate pharmacokinetic data regarding …
Antioxidative And Antimicrobial Activity Of Casein Hydrolyzate In Cheddar Whey-Based Edible Coatings, Yin Zhang
Antioxidative And Antimicrobial Activity Of Casein Hydrolyzate In Cheddar Whey-Based Edible Coatings, Yin Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrolysis of casein using chymotrypsin results in the formation of polypeptides (CH) with a hydrophobic aromatic amino acid on one end of the chain because the enzyme selectively cleaves the adjacent peptide-bond. Due to resonance of the aromatic micro-domain, thiols become redox-sensitive and actively participate in electron transfer. These types of amphipathic peptides also tend to be membrane-lytic. The two prong approach of this investigation was to, (1) assess antibacterial effect of the CH in beef steak, and (2), to determine its antioxidative efficacy as a constituent of Cheddar whey based edible coating mix. The edible coating prevented coliform growth …
Transcriptome Response Associated With Protective Immunity In T And B Cell Deficient Zebrafish, Aparna Krishnavajhala
Transcriptome Response Associated With Protective Immunity In T And B Cell Deficient Zebrafish, Aparna Krishnavajhala
Theses and Dissertations
RAG1-/- mutant zebrafish lack T and B lymphocytes. However, when re-exposed to homologous bacteria, these fish mount a response that provides specific protection. To further define this response, we utilized microarray analyses to determine the mechanisms underlying innate immune system memory in zebrafish. We also analyzed interferon (IFN) gamma by qRT-PCR. It is produced by activated NK cells and could indicate if this cell mediates the protective response seen in lymphocyte deficient zebrafish. Pathological studies and in situ hybridizations were performed to observe tissue changes and location of the cells that produced IFN gamma. Following bacterial re-exposure, zebrafish transcripts in …
Cattle Grazing Preferences, Animal Performance, And Harvest Management Effects Among Diploid And Tetraploid Cultivars Of Annual Ryegrass, Juan Kevin Quamina Solomon
Cattle Grazing Preferences, Animal Performance, And Harvest Management Effects Among Diploid And Tetraploid Cultivars Of Annual Ryegrass, Juan Kevin Quamina Solomon
Theses and Dissertations
Incremental gains in productivity from new forages are likely to be very small in developed countries like the USA where forage research is highly advanced, thus animals must be used in determining their value. Three experiments were conducted. Experiment I evaluated grazing preference of cattle and its relationship with morphological and chemical characteristics. Treatments were two diploid cultivars ‘Marshall’ and ‘Gulf’ and two tetraploid cultivars ‘Maximus’ and ‘Nelson’ arranged in a 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment. Animal preference was based on herbage disappearance, the Chesson-Manly index, and animal grazing time. Both herbage disappearance (1400 vs. 890 kg ha-1) …
Changes In Host Use By Unionid Mussels Following River Channelization And Impoundment, Lee Gray Turnage
Changes In Host Use By Unionid Mussels Following River Channelization And Impoundment, Lee Gray Turnage
Theses and Dissertations
More than half the North American freshwater mussel species in the family Unionidae (unionids) are imperiled or extinct. Alteration of rivers is considered a major contributor to unionid population declines. Losses could occur through disruption of the reproductive cycle. Unionid reproduction requires attachment of larva (glochidia) to host fishes; therefore, changes in the host fish community could alter the reproductive potential in unionid communities. There have been few attempts to compare reproductive success before and after alteration. I examined the pattern of glochidia use on two common host fishes, Lepomis megalotis and Cyprinella venusta, before and after alteration of the …
Comparison Of Student Achievement Among Two Science Laboratory Types: Traditional And Virtual, Mary Celeste Reese
Comparison Of Student Achievement Among Two Science Laboratory Types: Traditional And Virtual, Mary Celeste Reese
Theses and Dissertations
Technology has changed almost every aspect of our daily lives. It is not surprising then that technology has made its way into the classroom. More and more educators are utilizing technological resources in creative ways with the intent to enhance learning, including using virtual laboratories in the sciences in place of the “traditional” science laboratories. This has generated much discussion as to the influence on student achievement when online learning replaces the face-toace contact between instructor and student. The purpose of this study was to discern differences in achievement of two laboratory instruction types: virtual laboratory and a traditional laboratory. …
Serenbe, A Case Study In Agricultural Urbanism, Charles Alexander Gotherman
Serenbe, A Case Study In Agricultural Urbanism, Charles Alexander Gotherman
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the overwhelming role food plays in our everyday lives, the both new and old phenomenon of incorporating food systems into master planned communities has largely been overlooked. The in-progress community of Serenbe located just outside of Atlanta, Georgia is breaking this trend. The mixed use 1,000 acre community has already included many food and agriculture elements such as an organic farm, farmers’ market, grocery store, farm-to-table restaurants and edible landscaping - making it an exemplar case of an emerging planning strategy called Agricultural Urbanism. While many are heralding Serenbe for its strides as a community that incorporates agriculture into …
Lime Treatment Of Interior And South-Central Alaskan Soils, Matthew E. Billings
Lime Treatment Of Interior And South-Central Alaskan Soils, Matthew E. Billings
Engineering
Lime treatment of soil is the practice of introducing lime to soil to improve subgrade conditions or to improve a soil's properties to meet construction aggregate qualifications. Lime treated soils commonly exhibit improvements in moisture-density, strength, and thaw performance. Although lime treatment has been practiced in many regions of the United States and Canada for several decades, it is not practiced in Alaska. The purpose of this study was to determine potential of improving commonly encountered Alaskan soils with lime treatment. The two soils analyzed during this study were a silt from the Fairbanks area and a silty gravel from …

Assessment Of Canine Immunity Using Computational And Flow Cytometric Approaches, Kriston Weaver
Theses and Dissertations
The Affymetrix GeneChip® Canine Genome 2.0 microarray is re-annotated using AgBase tools, up-to-date ID mapping and GO annotations associated with publicly available gene products updated on this array. This re-annotation makes the array more useful for researchers using the canine microarray for biological discovery. We use flow cytometry to determine if liposomal clodronate (LC) is an acceptable alternative to surgical splenectomy to facilitate detection of subclinical infection with Babesia canis in potential blood donor greyhounds. Our study shows that LC is not a reliable means of exposing babesiosis in greyhounds with a recent history of infection. We evaluate the effect …
Characterization Of Novel Virulence Factors Of Listeria Monocytogenes And Their Roles In Pathogenesis, Ting Zhang
Characterization Of Novel Virulence Factors Of Listeria Monocytogenes And Their Roles In Pathogenesis, Ting Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
The pathogenicity of food-borne intracellular bacterium Listeria monocytogenes is greatly associated with its abilities to invade non-phagocytic cells, counteract the host innate immune system, resist bactericidal antibiotic-mediated killing, and breaking the physical barriers. In the last 30 years of research on L. monocytogenes, several virulence factors, such as Listeriolysin O (LLO), InlA, InlB, ActA, PI-PLC, and PC-PLC have already been characterized as important players that help this bacterium to achieve the key stage of infection. There are approximately 3,000 open reading frames in Listeria’s genome; however, only few virulence factors are functionally characterized. Thus, it is important to identify new …
Diversity And Characteristics Of Heat-Stress Adaptation In Listeria Monocytogenes Strains, Priyanka Mahesh Jangam
Diversity And Characteristics Of Heat-Stress Adaptation In Listeria Monocytogenes Strains, Priyanka Mahesh Jangam
Theses and Dissertations
A set of 37 strains including 13 serotypes of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) were analyzed for heat tolerance at 60°C for 10 min and further categorized into three groups; low (strains with <2 log survival), medium (2-4 log survival), and high (4-6 log survival) heat tolerant. When Lm strains representing each group were subjected to sub-lethal heatstress at 48°C prior to 60°C, the survivals of all strains were increased by at least 5 log CFU/ml when compared to controls. Sub-lethal heat-stress at 48°C for 30-60 min increased the heat-stress resistance of Lm strains by doubling D60°C values from 1.9-4.3 to 5.0-10.4 min. When Lm cells were cooled after sublethal heat-stress at 48°C prior to 60°C treatment, such acquired heat-stress adaptation was unstable at 22°C but was found to be highly stable for up to 24 h at 4°C. These results will have potential implications in food safety risk analysis for Lm.

Effect Of Chopping Or Cubing Hay On Apparent Digestibility Of Nutrients When Fed To Angus, Hereford, And Charolais Steers, Rebecca Ann Willcutt
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to evaluate digestibility of cubed hay as a feedstuff for ruminants. Angus (n=6), Hereford (n=3), and Charolais (n=3; total n=12; 226 ± 21.8kg) steers, stratified by breed, were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups: 1) hay; 2) chopped; 3) cubed. There was no difference (P > 0.05) of DMI or digestibility of DM, OM, NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, and energy among treatments. Steers consuming hay digested more CP than those consuming chopped. Steers consuming cubed digested less CP than those consuming hay or chopped. More fat was digested by steers consuming hay or chopped than by …
Effect Of Late Season Precipitation On Cotton Yield Distributions, Sandra E (Sandra Esi) Amonoo
Effect Of Late Season Precipitation On Cotton Yield Distributions, Sandra E (Sandra Esi) Amonoo
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the impact of late season precipitation on the distribution of cotton yields provides insight into managing yield risks. This research combines Linear Moment Models with historical weather data to assess the impact of late season precipitation extremes on cotton production and revenue. The empirical analysis suggests that late season drought reduces both mean yield and variance. The shift in variance is coupled with an exchange of upside risk for downside risk implying that the variance reduction alone masks an important effect on producer’s risk. Revenue impacts suggest high revenue for irrigated acreage as compared to dryland acreage, and the …
Identification Of Acid Volatile Sulfides As A Predictor Of Sediment Oxygen Demand And Comparison Of The Degree Of Pyritization Between Weeks Bay, Al And Old Tampa Bay, Fl, Erin Leigh Anderson
Identification Of Acid Volatile Sulfides As A Predictor Of Sediment Oxygen Demand And Comparison Of The Degree Of Pyritization Between Weeks Bay, Al And Old Tampa Bay, Fl, Erin Leigh Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Weeks Bay, AL is a governmentally protected reserve near Mobile Bay, AL, while Old Tampa Bay, FL is an urbanized estuary, located along the western coast of Florida. Estuary health is important to local economies and the health of local marine life, with an emphasis on low levels of eutrophication. Sediment oxygen demand (SOD) is usually measured to qualify the environmental health of estuaries, but SOD is timeconsuming and expensive. Average acid volatile monosulfides (AVS) concentrations were found to accurately predict SOD variances. The Degree of Pyritization (DOP) is a measure of long-term sediment oxidation conditions, which indicates normal estuary …
Influence Of Temperature On The Induction Of Alkali-Stress Adaptation And Its Stability In Listeria Monocytogenes Serotypes 1/2a And 4b, Pooja Pandare
Influence Of Temperature On The Induction Of Alkali-Stress Adaptation And Its Stability In Listeria Monocytogenes Serotypes 1/2a And 4b, Pooja Pandare
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of temperature on inducing an alkaline-tolerance response in L. monocytogenes (Lm) serotypes 1/2a and 4b. When Lm cells were pre-exposed to a sublethal alkali pH of 9.0 at different temperatures, two main patterns were observed: (1) Alkali-stress adaptation was readily induced in Lm when cells were pre-exposed to a sublethal alkali pH of 9.0 for 5-15 min at 37°C or 22°C; and (2) Alkali-stress adaptation was not induced in Lm when cells were pre-exposed to a sublethal alkali pH of 9.0 for 1 h at 4°C. However, exposure of Lm …
Roles Of Progesterone And Paternal Gene Expression On Embryo Development In Bovine, Melissa C. Mason
Roles Of Progesterone And Paternal Gene Expression On Embryo Development In Bovine, Melissa C. Mason
Theses and Dissertations
Fertility is the most important factor controlling mammalian reproduction. Bull fertility, ability of the sperm to fertilize and activate the egg, and support embryonic development is crucial for early development. Similarly, the hormonal environment of the embryo also plays a critical role in successful embryonic development. We know that molecular health of the sperm as well as progesterone enhancing the development of the embryo is important for early development and implantation. The gaps in the knowledge base are 1) how early mammalian embryo development is paternally affected is not fully clear and 2) how progesterone improves the survival of the …
Evaluation Of Rapidly Growing Vegetation On Mississippi Roadsides, Timothy Bradford Jr.
Evaluation Of Rapidly Growing Vegetation On Mississippi Roadsides, Timothy Bradford Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Non-point source pollution caused by erosion from road construction poses hazardous environmental effects. Percolation and infiltration of nutrients into groundwater can also be detrimental to the surrounding environment. In addition, annual roadside maintenance budget exceeded $14 million in 2011 for Mississippi. Objectives of this research were to evaluate rapidly established short-statured species in an effort to prevent erosion, combat non-point source pollution, reduce mowing cost, and provide quick cover following propagation. Factors evaluated were rate of establishment, plant cover, and mowing requirement. MDOT’s standard seed mix was evaluated along with Pennington’s SlopeMaster product and different combinations of selected plant species. …
Field Disease Incidence, Fungal Collection, And Evaluation Of Koch's Postulates With Isolated Fungi From Giant Miscanthus (Miscanthus X Giganteus) In Mississippi, Maxwell Daniel Gilley
Field Disease Incidence, Fungal Collection, And Evaluation Of Koch's Postulates With Isolated Fungi From Giant Miscanthus (Miscanthus X Giganteus) In Mississippi, Maxwell Daniel Gilley
Theses and Dissertations
The establishment of perennial grasses as biomass crops has increased the production acreage of giant miscanthus (Miscanthus x gigantues Greef et Deu, MXG). Yield loss and establishment failure could be detrimental to the sustainable production of this crop, and therefore, exploitation of differentiation in cultivar response to fungal diseases could be a key management strategy. A study was initiated in 2010 to evaluate MXG cultivars for foliar disease incidence (FDI) and compare to switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L., SG) cultivars, isolate and identify fungi from symptomatic leaf material, and demonstrate through Koch’s postulates the ability of these fungi to incite symptoms …
Bamboo Nutritional Composition, Biomass Production, And Palatability To Giant Pandas: Disturbance And Temporal Effects, Jennifer L. Parsons
Bamboo Nutritional Composition, Biomass Production, And Palatability To Giant Pandas: Disturbance And Temporal Effects, Jennifer L. Parsons
Theses and Dissertations
The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) subsists on bamboo, but lacks gastrointestinal modifications for fiber digestion. Pandas display dietary selectivity for certain plant parts; however, cues for selection are unknown, and few have examined panda feeding behavior and bamboo nutrient composition simultaneously. Bamboos are clonal plants, with seasonal cycles of nutrient accumulation related to peak photosynthesis and recruitment. These cycles can be destabilized by aboveground disturbance; however, effects of disturbance on nutritional quality and sustainability of bamboo for primary consumers have not been studied. I examined 4 factors that may contribute to bamboo nutritional quality or sustainable harvest: season, ramet maturity …
Inbreeding And Heterozygosity-Fitness Correlations In A Small, Isolated Population Of Turks And Caicos Rock Iguanas, Cyclura Carinata, Jamen W. Berk
Inbreeding And Heterozygosity-Fitness Correlations In A Small, Isolated Population Of Turks And Caicos Rock Iguanas, Cyclura Carinata, Jamen W. Berk
Theses and Dissertations
Inbreeding depression affects captive populations and those that have been recently impacted by anthropogenic disturbance. However, the evolutionary importance of inbreeding depression in natural populations is not well understood. This study focuses on a naturally small population of Cyclura carinata, the Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana, that has likely been stable for hundreds of generations. Genotypic data at 13 polymorphic microsatellite loci, along with fitness proxies, were collected from 188 individuals across three age classes. Multi-locus heterozygosity is strongly predictive of age class (p < 0.03), and is significantly lower in hatchlings than in juveniles or adults. Estimates for intensity of selection favoring heterozygosity range from 0.498-0.627, indicating that this proportion of individuals fail to survive due to inbreeding depression. The heterozygosityitness correlation among adults is significant (p < 0.01), suggesting outbred individuals have higher reproduction success. Hence, the lifetime influence of inbreeding on fitness is extremely high.
Influence Of Temperature On Acid-Stress Adaptation In Listeria Monocytogenes, Qian Shen
Influence Of Temperature On Acid-Stress Adaptation In Listeria Monocytogenes, Qian Shen
Theses and Dissertations
Acid-stress adaptation in Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) serotype 4b and 1/2a occurred when cells were pre-exposed to pH 5.0 tryptic soy broth supplemented with yeast extract (TSB-YE) at 22°C or 37°C but not at 4°C. Prolonged time, varied sublethal acid pH, substitute of acidulants and addition of sodium chloride during 4°C mild acid pre-exposure still did not induce acid-stress adaptation in Lm. This finding was also validated using an acidic cheese, similar to what has seen for Gram-negative bacteria E. coli and Salmonella. Further investigation revealed that major cold shock protein in Lm CspL was not responsible for repressed acid-stress adaptation …

Mitigating Aquaculture Effluent Through Use Of Low-Grade Weirs, Corrin Lee Flora
Theses and Dissertations
Water management practices to reduce mass discharge are a major point of concern for aquaculture producers. This study assessed effects of consecutive low-grade weirs on chemical retention and settling of aquaculture pond effluent in a single drainage ditch. Two control and nine treatment discharges were conducted September - October 2012. Control discharge dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) load increased 154%, whereas total inorganic phosphorus (TIP), ammonia, and nitrate loads decreased (47%, 43%, and 63%, respectively). Treatment discharge nutrient loads decreased across all analytes (80% DIP, 86% TIP, 89% ammonia, 89% nitrate). However, control and treatment discharges concentrations of DIP and nitrate …
