What Happens When The Body Matters? : An Exploration Of Corporeal Textualities In The Life And Work Of Two White South African Authors And Its Implications For Clinical Social Work Practice, Asher Pandjiris
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This project explores intergenerational transmission of trauma as evidenced in the body. Specifically, I focus attention on the somatic experiences of two white South African women, one historical/biographical and one fictional/contemporary, to elaborate the legacy of white colonial psychic disavowals in post-colonial South Africa. Using feminist and relational psychodynamic theories, this project addresses the alexithymia of the colonial predicament via an assertion that unwitnessed somatic distress as a result of disavowed trauma in individuals is potentially transmitted to subsequent generations and requires nuanced clinical attention. Additionally, this project argues that interrupting the intergenerational transmission of collective traumas such as colonialism …

More Than Just An Exchange : How Does Access To Syringe Exchange Impact Actively Using Participants' Emotional Well-Being, Melissa A. Morelli
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative, exploratory study examines how accessing Syringe Access Services (SAS) directly impacts program participants' emotional well-being. The purpose of this research is to give voice to individuals who utilize SAS services; to gain personal and valuable information about the nature of the participant; and to reveal the emotional and mental health outcomes linked with SEP's. Twelve individuals who have been program participants of SAS for over a year were interviewed for this study. Participants were interviewed indoors at one of the SAS's fixed needle exchange sites in the Bay Area. In-person semi-structured interview questions elicited participants' experience with various …

Given the wide energy insecurity crisis in the world, alternative fuels are fast becoming the most sought after means of providing energy. This is relevant to the fast growing population and fast depletion of conventional energy resources. However the practical application of these alternative fuels can only be possible if they are compatible with the materials, in particular elastomers, used in service conditions. Keeping this in view, the present study focuses on the compatibility of elastomers and palm biodiesel. More precisely, the swelling characteristics of elastomers in palm biodiesel in the absence and in the presence of static mechanical loading …

Cytosine DNA methylation is a stable epigenetic mark that is frequently associated with the silencing of genes and transposable elements (TEs). In Arabidopsis, the establishment of DNA methylation is through the RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathway. Here, we report the identification and characterization of RDM16, a new factor in the RdDM pathway. Mutation of RDM16 reduced the DNA methylation levels and partially released the silencing of a reporter gene as well as some endogenous genomic loci in the DNA demethylase ros1-1 mutant background. The rdm16 mutant had morphological defects and was hypersensitive to salt stress and abscisic acid (ABA). …

The mosquito-borne alphavirus, chikungunya virus (CHIKV), has recently reemerged, producing the largest epidemic ever recorded for this virus, with up to 6.5 million cases of acute and chronic rheumatic disease. There are currently no licensed vaccines for CHIKV and current anti-inflammatory drug treatment is often inadequate. Here we describe the isolation and characterization of two human monoclonal antibodies, C9 and E8, from CHIKV infected and recovered individuals. C9 was determined to be a potent virus neutralizing antibody and a biosensor antibody binding study demonstrated it recognized residues on intact CHIKV VLPs. Shotgun mutagenesis alanine scanning of 98 percent of the …

A Satellite And Ground Evaluation Of Urban Vegetation And Infrastructure In The Landscape Of A Tropical City: Heredia, Costa Rica, Julian Monge-Najera, Zaidett Barrientos, Maribel Zúñiga-Solís
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Urban vegetation can have beneficial effects on biodiversity and human health and has been widely studied in temperate cities. The situation, however, is different in the tropics: there is a knowledge gap describing the influence of the growth and expansion of tropical cities on vegetation within the cities. There is also a scarcity of work discussing appropriate methods to quantify urban vegetation in the tropics, where financial resources for research are normally quite limited. Our objectives in this article were to measure the amount of urban vegetation in a tropical city, its relationship to population and infrastructure, and to determine …

Constructs Of Freedom And Identity: The Ethnogenesis Of The Jamaican Maroons And The Treaties Of 1739, Jessica Krug
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
This article is a study of the Maroons communities in eighteenth-century Jamaica. The Maroons did not end the institution of slavery, but they ended the condition of their own enslavement, and so made possible such actions as the successful revolt in Haiti, which, ultimately, collapsed racialized slavery in the New World. Understanding the ethnogenesis of the Jamaican Maroons provides an excellent opportunity for people to escape the narrow duality of victim-and-oppressor which most often shapes discussion of the history of slavery.

The Clerical Wife: Medieval Perceptions Of Women During The Eleventh‐ And Twelfth‐Century Church Reforms, Cara Kaser
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
To those who promoted the agendas of the eleventh and twelfth century church reforms the cleric’s wife embodied those things which inhibited the process of man reaching the holy: lust, defilement, worldliness, and temptation. But to those who demanded that she remain a part of conventional marital structures and sacred traditions, the clerical wife remained an important – and controversial – aspect of clerical culture throughout the Middle Ages. The figure and image of the priest’s wife has eluded historians for generations, as her presence as an important component of the controversy surrounding the heightened enforcement of clerical celibacy throughout …

Gene Flow In An Invasive Species Of Grass, Brachypodium Sylvaticum, Trieste Dobberstein
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Invasive species of plants are responsible for a staggering amount of damage to the landscape and floral and faunal communities. Invasions remain largely ignored until invasive populations have reached critical levels, at which point costly and time consuming efforts are required for containment or control. Studying the early stages of an invasion can provide insight into the mechanics behind the establishment and spread of invaders, as well as shed more light on the processes of microevolution. Brachypodium sylvaticum is a grass recently invasive to the Willamette Valley, and possesses many traits valuable to a migration and evolutionary study. This study …

The Localism Movement: Shared And Emergent Values, Nancy B. Kurland, Sara Jane Mccaffrey, Douglas H. Hill
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
Localism, a movement to encourage consumers and businesses to purchase from locally owned, independent businesses rather than national corporations, has grown rapidly in the past decade. With several national, federated organizations and popular “buy local” campaigns, the localism movement has the potential to affect buying patterns, marketing, and distribution in American business. Yet localism remains understudied by researchers. This article, based on data from 38 interviews with localism leaders, identifies four of the movement’s priorities: independent ownership, local buying, local sourcing, and pragmatic partnering. In addition, we analyze the movement’s emerging values, including responsibility to workers and to the natural …
Effects Of Brief Electrical Stimulation On Embryonic Neurons Transplanted Into Peripheral Nerve, Yang Liu
Effects Of Brief Electrical Stimulation On Embryonic Neurons Transplanted Into Peripheral Nerve, Yang Liu
Open Access Dissertations
Motoneuron death occurs with spinal cord injury, neuromuscular disease and age, resulting in muscle denervation. Although spared axons can reinnervate nearby muscle fibers, death of an entire motoneuron pool prevents muscle reinnervation by host motoneurons. The muscle will remain denervated completely. To reduce denervation-induced muscle atrophy, we have previously transplanted embryonic ventral spinal cord cells into a peripheral nerve near denervated muscles. This strategy shortens the distance axons have to regenerate to reinnervate muscles. Reinnervation reduced muscle atrophy but some muscle fibers remained denervated. Since neural activity is required for the survival of embryonic neurons and promotes axon growth, the …

Fashion Vs. Function In Cultural Evolution: The Case Of Dog Breed Popularity, Stefano Ghirlanda, Alberto Acerbi, Harold A. Herzog, James A. Serpell
Pets Collection
We investigate the relationship between characteristics of dog breeds and their popularity between years 1926 and 2005. We consider breed health, longevity, and behavioral qualities such as aggressiveness, trainability, and fearfulness. We show that a breed’s overall popularity, fluctuations in popularity, and rates of increase and decrease around popularity peaks show typically no correlation with these breed characteristics. One exception is the finding that more popular breeds tend to suffer from more inherited disorders. Our results support the hypothesis that dog breed popularity has been primarily determined by fashion rather than function.
