Transposable Element Evolution In Heliconius Suggests Genome Diversity Within Lepidoptera, Christine A. Lavoie, Roy N. Platt, Peter A. Novick, Brian A. Counterman, David A. Ray

Publications and Research

Background Transposable elements (TEs) have the potential to impact genome structure, function and evolution in profound ways. In order to understand the contribution of transposable elements (TEs) to Heliconius melpomene, we queried the H. melpomene draft sequence to identify repetitive sequences. Results We determined that TEs comprise ~25% of the genome. The predominant class of TEs (~12% of the genome) was the non-long terminal repeat (non-LTR) retrotransposons, including a novel SINE family. However, this was only slightly higher than content derived from DNA transposons, which are diverse, with several families having mobilized in the recent past. Compared to the only …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Over the past decades, some scientific progress has been made in understanding and treating cancer-related fatigue (CRF). However, three major problems have limited further progress: lack of agreement about measurement, inadequate understanding of the underlying biology, and problems in the conduct of clinical trials for CRF. This commentary reports the recommendations of a National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Planning Meeting and an ongoing National Cancer Institute working group to address these problems so that high-priority research and clinical trials can be conducted to advance the science of CRF and its treatment. Recommendations to address measurement issues included revising the current …

Prevalence, Serotype, Virulence Characteristics, Clonality, And Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Pathogenic Yersinia Enterocolitica From Swine Feces, Saumya Bhaduri, Irene V. Wesley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Enteroinvasive pathogenic strains of Yersinia enterocolitica are recognized as major human pathogens that cause 96,000 cases of human disease annually in the United States (Scallen et al. 2011 ) . Ninety percent of those cases are the result of foodborne transmission (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2006 ; Nesbakken 2005 ; Scallen et al. 2011 ) . Swine are identified as important reservoirs of Y. enterocolitica serotypes (O:3, O:5, O:8, O:9) that are associated with human illness (Fredriksson-Ahomaa et al. 2011 ) . Pathogenic Y. enterocolitica carriage in swine ranges from 35 to 70% of herds and 4.5 …

Mobile Museum Communication Design And New Literacies, Dagny Stuedahl, Sarah Lowe

Learn X Design Conference Series

The relationship of technology to museum practices is a field that continues to evolve; acknowledging the potential for generating innovative engagement with museum visitors. Engagements that will require understandings on the part of museum communication that include: content travelling across contexts, iterative participatory methods suitable for mobile social media participation, and sustainability of the media involved. In this paper we demonstrate how the use of a small-scale prototype experiment is used as the basis for generating methods in which design thinking and cultural investigation can contribute to understanding emerging literacies for museum communication design. As a team of researchers making …

Administration of adipose-derived stromal/stem cells (ASCs) represents a promising therapeutic approach for autoimmune diseases since they have been shown to have immunomodulatory properties. The uncultured, nonexpanded counterpart of ASCs, the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), is composed of a heterogeneous mixture of cells. Although administration of ex vivo culture-expanded ASCs has been used to study immunomodulatory mechanisms in multiple models of autoimmune diseases, less is known about SVF-based therapy. The ability of murine SVF cells to treat myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein35-55-induced experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE) was compared with that of culture-expanded ASCs in C57Bl/6J mice. A total of 1 x …

There is a significant clinical need for effective therapies for primary progressive multiple sclerosis, which presents later in life (i.e., older than 50 years) and has symptoms that increase in severity without remission. With autologous mesenchymal stem cell therapy now in the early phases of clinical trials for all forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), it is necessary to determine whether autologous stem cells from older donors have therapeutic effectiveness. In this study, the therapeutic efficacy of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) from older donors was directly compared with that of cells from younger donors for disease prevention. Mice were …

Steps To Support Student Engagement In An Online Course With Large Enrollments, Paula Jones

Instructional Development Center Faculty and Staff Research

In online courses with large enrollments, it may be difficult to support students in becoming engaged communications or projects simply because of the sheer number of students involved in the course. In this session, we will look at a summary list of steps to follow that is intended to help faculty developers to plan ways to support student engagement in an online course, specifically related to courses with large enrollments. We will then have an open discussion of methods others use in their courses to support student engagement. Finally, we will explore some specific free or low cost resources used …

Fiber Treating Metabolic Syndrome, Alexis D. Stamatikos, Farzad Deyhim, Gary A. Apgar, William J. Banz

Peer-reviewed Articles

The number of individuals diagnosed with metabolic syndrome has risen dramatically in recent years. Although not a disease itself, metabolic syndrome significantly raises the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, both considered to be epidemics. Therefore, it is critical to promote aggressive therapies that effectively combat conditions associated with the metabolic syndrome. However, treating metabolic syndrome is complicated due to the complex nature of its pathophysiology coinciding with the many health abnormalities metabolic syndrome is often associated with, including but not limited to, insulin resistance, central obesity, hypertension, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. One promising compound that has …

Morphometrics Of Four Genital Traits In Some Philippine Populations Of The Asian Corn Borer, Ostrinia Furnacalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Gelyn D. Sapin, Barbara L. Caoili, Jessamyn D. Recuenco-Adorada Oct 2013

Morphometrics Of Four Genital Traits In Some Philippine Populations Of The Asian Corn Borer, Ostrinia Furnacalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Gelyn D. Sapin, Barbara L. Caoili, Jessamyn D. Recuenco-Adorada

Journal Article

The morphometrics of four genital traits were examined among the 27 local populations of Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee). Comparison in measurements of genital traits, namely: aedeagus, sacculus and valva lengths and clasper width, showed significant differences among and within the local populations compared. Cluster analysis based on percent correct classification revealed four groups within ACB populations with 96% accuracy. However, the more sensitive jackknife correct classification analysis revealed that the groups formed were 85% accurate. The results also showed that groups were formed regardless of geographical distance. The variations in genital traits of the different ACB populations …

Artists’ Recordworks In The Early Twenty-First Century, Susan E. Thomas Oct 2013

Artists’ Recordworks In The Early Twenty-First Century, Susan E. Thomas

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

Despite the rise of digital downloads and streaming music, contemporary artists and musicians are creating analog objects that combine audio recordings—vinyl record, cassette, CD—with printed matter. These artists’ recordworks are a type of artist’s book; they are also alternative publications, released in editions or as multiples. The author defines artists’ recordworks and provides some background in order to establish historical precedent for recordworks in art library collections. A brief history of album cover art is included as well because it links graphic and package design to fine art.
