Proprioception And Tension Receptors In Crab Limbs: Student Laboratory Exercises, Zana R. Majeed, Josh Titlow, H. Bernard Hartman, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

The primary purpose of these procedures is to demonstrate for teaching and research purposes how to record the activity of living primary sensory neurons responsible for proprioception as they are detecting joint position and movement, and muscle tension. Electrical activity from crustacean proprioceptors and tension receptors is recorded by basic neurophysiological instrumentation, and a transducer is used to simultaneously measure force that is generated by stimulating a motor nerve. In addition, we demonstrate how to stain the neurons for a quick assessment of their anatomical arrangement or for permanent fixation. Staining reveals anatomical organization that is representative of chordotonal organs …

Collagen Content In Skin And Internal Organs Of The Tight Skin Mouse: An Animal Model Of Scleroderma., Jayanthi Manne, Marina Markova, Linda D Siracusa, Sergio A Jimenez

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The Tight Skin mouse is a genetically induced animal model of tissue fibrosis caused by a large in-frame mutation in the gene encoding fibrillin-1 (Fbn-1). We examined the influence of gender on the collagen content of tissues in C57BL/6J wild type (+/+) and mutant Tight Skin (Tsk/+) mice employing hydroxyproline assays. Tissue sections were stained with Masson's trichrome to identify collagen in situ. Adult Tsk/+ mice skin contains ~15% more collagen, on average, than skin from +/+ mice of the same gender. The heart of Tsk/+ males had significantly more collagen than that of +/+ males. No significant gender differences …

Acute Physiological Stress Promotes Clustering Of Synaptic Markers And Alters Spine Morphology In The Hippocampus, Veronica Sebastian, Jim Brian Estil, Daniel Chen, Lisa M. Schrott, Peter A. Serrano

Publications and Research

GluA2-containing AMPA receptors and their association with protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ) and post-synaptic density-95 (PSD-95) are important for learning, memory and synaptic plasticity processes. Here we investigated these synaptic markers in the context of an acute 1h platform stress, which can disrupt spatial memory retrieval for a short-term memory on the object placement task and long-term memory retrieval on a well-learned radial arm maze task. Acute stress increased serum corticosterone and elevated the expression of synaptic PKMζ while decreasing synaptic GluA2. Using co-immunoprecipitation, we found that this stressor promotes the clustering of GluA2, PKMζ and PSD-95, which is consistent …

Portage Periplus Journal, Roy R. Larick, William C. Barrow, Tom Balbo Oct 2013

Portage Periplus Journal, Roy R. Larick, William C. Barrow, Tom Balbo

Octavofest

With the Portage Periplus Journal, Bluestone Heights and the Morgan Conservatory engage Clevelanders with the Portage Escarpment. Gateway to “the Heights,” the escarpment is a major natural feature and carries more than 200 years of Cleveland cultural history.

Bluestone Heights explores escarpment nature and culture with online mapping and onsite walking tours. We use the literary device of periplus, a narration of voyage along a shoreline. The Portage Periplus navigates the escarpment front to tell its deep history.

For Octavofest 2013, the Morgan Conservatory adds paper art to the project. On handmade Morgan papers, the Portage Periplus Journal relates …

The Archaeology Of Provincial Officers' Huts At Crown Point State Historic Site, Charles L. Fisher Oct 2013

The Archaeology Of Provincial Officers' Huts At Crown Point State Historic Site, Charles L. Fisher

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Archaeological survey of the site of a proposed maintenance building at Crown Point State Historic Site located the remains of three historic structures, identified as temporary housing of 18th-century soldiers during the initial construction of the extensive British fortifications, which began in 1759. These archaeological features and associated objects are evidence of both the material conditions of the soldiers and the social relationships among them. The spatial organization of the encampement separated the Provincial regiments from the British regulars. Within a single Provincial regiment's camp, the officers' huts were separated from their troops. The small objects recovered archaeologically are viewed …

Scratching The Surface: Seven Seasons At The Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm, Newbury, Massachusetts, Mary C. Beaudry

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Results of excavations conducted between 1986 and 1994 at the Spencer-Pierce-Little farm, Newbury, Massachusetts, are summarized and evaluated in light of the research questions that have guided the project to date. Under continuous occupation and cultivation from 1635 to the present, the site has that potential to contribute to many topics of interest to historical archaeologists working in New England and elsewhere, including questions about ideological and practical aspects of landscape and land use; changing agricultural practice and the effects of agricultural reform; farm tenancy; the archaeology of the household and homelot; relationships between urban and rural contexts in early …
