"Fighting Against Ourselves, Why History Continues To Repeat Itself?", Rysheema J. Dixon

Capstone Collection

My capstone will focus on how self-mobilization among Blacks and Indians can affect change in the United States and India to build a stronger sense of community and improve their rights to education. This paper outlines multiple approaches to fighting against oppressors, combating ethnic to ethnic conflicts and obtaining educational rights. Many cultures have difficulty teaching and learning from one another and it inhibits them from fighting for their rights as citizens. Indians in India and Black Americans have similar background stories in reference to slavery and the caste system but live in two different realities. Identity also plays an …

Computer Lab Instruction In Elementary Schools: Time For Instructional Transformation Or Worksheet Substitution?, Julia Kara-Soteriou Oct 2013

Computer Lab Instruction In Elementary Schools: Time For Instructional Transformation Or Worksheet Substitution?, Julia Kara-Soteriou

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

Lately, concerns are raised about the ways teachers integrate technology and about their students’ digital literacy skills. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate how elementary school teachers use their scheduled computer lab time. During this observational study emphasis was placed on the integration of literacy and technology and the extent to which integration supported the development of new literacies and promoted transformation of literacy tasks. The study took place in two elementary schools and included three weeks of daily observations in each of the schools. After the observations, interviews were conducted with teachers and school/district administrators.

The Effects Of English Language Arts Instruction Using Multimedia Applications On Grade Three Students’ Reading Comprehension, Attitude Toward Computers, And Attitude Toward School, Mathew Swerdloff, Karen Burke

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of targeted English Language Arts instruction using multimedia applications. Reading comprehension, attitude toward computers, and attitude toward school were measured. The study examined the perceptions, of selected students, of the use of these multimedia applications. A MANOVA revealed that students who participated in the treatment group and received English Language Arts instruction using multimedia applications scored significantly higher than students in the control group. Analysis of the qualitative data revealed three themes that recurred throughout the five interviews. Qualitative and quantitative data were triangulated, and implications for researchers were discussed.

The System I And System Iii Holocytochrome C Synthases In Cytochrome C Biogenesis, Brian San Francisco Oct 2013

The System I And System Iii Holocytochrome C Synthases In Cytochrome C Biogenesis, Brian San Francisco

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Cytochromes c are proteins that are involved in important redox reactions in organisms from every kingdom of life. C-type cytochromes, uniquely, possess a covalently bound heme. Since cytochromes c are assembled at their site(s) of function: outside of the cytoplasmic membrane in bacteria, in the chloroplast lumen, or in the mitochrondrial intermembrane space), their assembly poses unique challenges to heme trafficking and post translational modification. Three major systems exist in nature for cytochrome c assembly, termed systems I, II, and III. Using recombinant Escherichia coli, aspects of systems I and III were analyzed, with an emphasis on the synthase protein(s) …

The project I have completed, with the help of the ORCA scholarship, as my BFA project for Illustration includes a 25 page research paper and a 1 minute 30 second computer animated film called Revealing DNA. Research for the project began in February 1997, and the entire project was completed by July 1997. The film, printed scenes from the film, and the paper were displayed at the BFA show in the Brimhall Gallery from August 1 – August 17.

Androgen Regulation Of Calbindin-D28k In Rat Hypothalamic Tissue During Prenatal Development, Melanie A. Watson, Dr. Edwin Lephart Oct 2013

Androgen Regulation Of Calbindin-D28k In Rat Hypothalamic Tissue During Prenatal Development, Melanie A. Watson, Dr. Edwin Lephart

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Calbindin-D28K is a calcium-binding protein that serves a potentially important role in both the development and function of the central nervous system (CNS). Previous studies indicate the dimorphic expressions of calbindin within the medial basal hypothalamus (N4BH), supporting its putative importance in the neurogenesis of sexually dimorphic brain structures.2 Another primary action of this protein is to buffer intracellular calcium levels, thus functioning as a neuroprotective mechanism against pre-mature apoptosis. Regulation of calbindin is reported to be, in part, stimulated by glucocorticoids in response to activation of the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal stress axis.3 Evidence also exists for the potential regulation of calcium-binding …

Effects Of Inundation On Hatch Success Of Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) Nests, Katherine R. Shaw Oct 2013

Effects Of Inundation On Hatch Success Of Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) Nests, Katherine R. Shaw

Open Access Theses

Piezometers were installed along Keewaydin Island (KI) at 55 loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nests to determine water levels within the egg chamber during eight to twelve hour sampling periods and the water’s effect upon embryonic development. Hatching success was calculated by excavating nests and determining the relative proportion of hatched to unhatched eggs. For unhatched eggs, we reported the embryonic stage at which development ceased. In 2012 approximately 46% of the variance in hatch success on Keewaydin Island was due to the inundation of nests. The hatching success of nests on Keewaydin decreased by 2.9% (s=13.5%) after one day of …
