Mechanisms governing the distinct temporal dynamics that characterize post-natal angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis elicited by cutaneous wounds and inflammation remain unclear. RhoB, a stress-induced small GTPase, modulates cellular responses to growth factors, genotoxic stress and neoplastic transformation. Here we show, using RhoB null mice, that loss of RhoB decreases pathological angiogenesis in the ischaemic retina and reduces angiogenesis in response to cutaneous wounding, but enhances lymphangiogenesis following both dermal wounding and inflammatory challenge. We link these unique and opposing roles of RhoB in blood versus lymphatic vasculatures to the RhoB-mediated differential regulation of sprouting and proliferation in primary human blood versus …

In the decades since Congress and state legislatures passed most of the nation's most significant environmental laws, our knowledge about ecosystems has increased dramatically. As ecologists learn more about the complex and dynamic interactions that produce valuable ecosystem services, decisionmakers and advocates should adopt an ecosystem services approach to implementing laws that affect the environment. An ecosystem services approach integrates advances in ecology with the law. It fosters creative thinking about how to restructure laws and regulatory programs to mimic the connectedness of ecosystem functions. The approach requires performance-based evaluations to measure success or failure of management decisions, and it …
Deconstructing Fragmentation: Koskenniemi's 2006 Ilc Project, Sean D. Murphy
Deconstructing Fragmentation: Koskenniemi's 2006 Ilc Project, Sean D. Murphy
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This essay – a contribution to a workshop organized to assess Martti Koskenniemi’s scholarship – focuses principally on Koskenniemi’s work as a member of the International Law Commission (ILC) from 2002 to 2006, and in particular his chairmanship of an ILC study group. Unlike Koskenniemi’s scholarship, which is solely his own or perhaps his in conjunction with a co-author, the ILC study group report on Fragmentation of International Law: Difficulties Arising from the Diversification and Expansion of International Law (Report), and the 42 associated conclusions, were a group effort, though it is well-understood that Koskenniemi was the driving force in …
What A Difference A Year Makes: The International Court Of Justice's 2012 Jurisprudence, Sean D. Murphy
What A Difference A Year Makes: The International Court Of Justice's 2012 Jurisprudence, Sean D. Murphy
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
An analysis of any particular decision of the International Court of Justice sometimes misses broader, cross-cutting themes that animate the Court’s jurisprudence. This essay, prepared for an April 2013 symposium at the European University Institute, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, in Florence, explores a few of the themes that emerged from the Court’s 2012 jurisprudence. First, notwithstanding the development of treaty regimes across a broad array of international law, there remains an enduring relevance of customary international law and general principles of law as sources of international law. Second, when identifying rules of customary international law, there is an …
Hostess And The Search For Workplace Dignity, Michael Selmi
Hostess And The Search For Workplace Dignity, Michael Selmi
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This symposium essay uses the recent bankruptcy filing by Hostess, which was prompted by the refusal of workers to take additional pay cuts to keep the company afloat, to explore the issue of workplace dignity. The Hostess bakery workers, I suggest, took a stand that proclaimed that employers could not assume that workers would do anything to keep their jobs, that some jobs were not worth having or keeping, particularly when the company had repeatedly failed to provide required pension payments to its workers. I also discuss the various ways in which consumers can seek to influence employment policies, though …

Automated Extraction And Classification Of Time-Frequency Contours In Humpback Vocalizations, Hui Ou, Whitlow W.L. Au, Lisa M. Zurk, Marc O. Lammers
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A time-frequency contour extraction and classification algorithm was created to analyze humpback whale vocalizations. The algorithm automatically extracted contours of whale vocalization units by searching for gray-level discontinuities in the spectrogram images. The unit-to-unit similarity was quantified by cross-correlating the contour lines. A library of distinctive humpback units was then generated by applying an unsupervised, cluster-based learning algorithm. The purpose of this study was to provide a fast and automated feature selection tool to describe the vocal signatures of animal groups. This approach could benefit a variety of applications such as species description, identification, and evolution of song structures. The …
Latino-Indigenous Influence On U.S. Catholicism In Demetria Martínez's Confessions Of A Berlitz-Tape Chicana, Elizabeth Coonrod Martínez
Latino-Indigenous Influence On U.S. Catholicism In Demetria Martínez's Confessions Of A Berlitz-Tape Chicana, Elizabeth Coonrod Martínez
Diálogo
The ideas presented by New Mexico novelist-writer Demetria Martínez in her collection of columns, Confessions of a Berlitz-tape Chicana, explore how she espouses and represents Latino Catholicism, applied as a practice rooted in indigenous culture merged with Catholic imagery during the colonial era. Her writing and stances indicate that Latino Catholicism is built on principles of community and social justice. Critical commentary is drawn from Chicana/o writers and recent texts on Mexican-American spirituality.
La Tradición Conchera: Historical Process Of Danza And Catholicism, Jennie Luna
La Tradición Conchera: Historical Process Of Danza And Catholicism, Jennie Luna
Diálogo
La Tradición Conchera (Conchero tradition), often used synonymously with Danza Azteca (Aztec Dance), has profound and complex roots connected to both an indigenous and colonial trajectory. This article presents a concise map of this history and the ties to the Catholic Church, which has been both a process of syncretism and synergy. The syncretism of Indigenous world views with the Catholic Church has had elements of preservation and decimation as demonstrated within the complex history of Danza. This article focuses on the Post-Cuauhtémoc origins of Danza (dances) and its relationship with the Church, State, and Indigenous communities.

Diálogo
A study around the concepts of “witness” and “testimony,” in the fields of Philosophy and Theology, as exemplified by the life work of Dorothy Day. The impact of her work in the U.S., from early to mid-twentieth century, and with the Catholic Worker Movement, is compared to that of the Latin American movement of Liberation Theology. Examples are provided of Dorothy Day’s observations on the agricultural workers strike and César Chávez, as well as various socio-political movements in Latin American countries. Also detailed and compared, are the early and later efforts under Liberation Theology, for its Church influences and dictates, …

Players: Gender And Sexuality In The Universe Of Don Delillo, Alexandria Nicole Tidwell
Players: Gender And Sexuality In The Universe Of Don Delillo, Alexandria Nicole Tidwell
Honors Theses
This project considers Don DeLillo’s body of work (specifically the texts Cosmopolis, Players, White Noise and Libra) in terms of gender and sexuality, two areas often overlooked by the current body of scholarship on the writer. My analysis is informed by contemporary queer theory — that is to say, an assumption of the constructed nature of gender and sexual difference runs through the work. I begin by defining two intertextual systems at work within (My first chapter deals with the capitalist system of Cosmopolis and Players, a closed network serving to mirror and critique modernist assumptions; and my second chapter …
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incorporating Virtual Cadaver Study On Student Performance In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Mary Katherine Kerce
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incorporating Virtual Cadaver Study On Student Performance In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Mary Katherine Kerce
Honors Theses
In an ideal Human Anatomy & Physiology (Human A&P) laboratory, students would use human cadavers for study. However, due to the limited supply of human cadavers and high cost of constructing and maintaining laboratory facilities, many institutions choose to use various animal organs and models to teach human anatomy. Dissections are an irreplaceable tool to help students understand human anatomy because models often have garish colors that allow easy discrimination of structures but do not show the colors and textures associated with real tissue. Additionally, cadavers, organs. and models must remain within the laboratory, so students have limited access. The …
Ph Dependent Proteolysis Of Neural Cadherin, Candice Ashton Walters
Ph Dependent Proteolysis Of Neural Cadherin, Candice Ashton Walters
Honors Theses
Cadherins are the primary calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion molecule and are essential to vertebrates. They ensure the integrity of epithelial barriers that allow for maintenance of homeostasis in humans and protection against invading microorganisms. A common invader capable of forging past this line of defense is the fungus Candida albicans. The main virulence mechanism of C. alibans in acidic environments is its secreted aspartyl proteinases (SAPs), which are hydrolytic enzymes that degrade cadherin-mediated cell adhesion leading to infection of the underlying tissues. Cadherin is normally resistant to cleavage by proteases due to stabilization of the protein structure by bound calcium and …
Functional Implications Of Impaired Control Of Submaximal Hip Flexion Following Stroke, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Sandra K. Hunter
Functional Implications Of Impaired Control Of Submaximal Hip Flexion Following Stroke, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Sandra K. Hunter
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction: We quantified sub-maximal torque regulation during low to moderate intensity isometric hip flexion contractions in individuals with stroke and the associations with leg function. Methods: 10 participants with chronic stroke and 10 controls performed isometric hip flexion contractions at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in paretic, non-paretic, and control legs. Results: Participants with stroke had larger torque fluctuations (coefficient of variation, CV), for both the paretic and non-paretic legs, than controls (Pr2 =0.45) and Berg Balance Score (r2=0.38). At 5% MVC, there were larger torque fluctuations in the …

Changes In Neurochemicals Within The Ventrolateral Medullary Respiratory Column In Awake Goats After Carotid Body Denervation, Justin Robert Miller, Suzanne E. Neumueller, Clarissa Muere, Samantha Olesiak, Lawrence Pan, Matthew R. Hodges, Hubert V. Forster
Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications
A current and major unanswered question is why the highly sensitive central CO2/H+ chemoreceptors do not prevent hypoventilation-induced hypercapnia following carotid body denervation (CBD). Because perturbations involving the carotid bodies affect central neuromodulator and/or neurotransmitter levels within the respiratory network, we tested the hypothesis that after CBD there is an increase in inhibitory and/or a decrease in excitatory neurochemicals within the ventrolateral medullary column (VMC) in awake goats. Microtubules for chronic use were implanted bilaterally in the VMC within or near the pre-Bötzinger Complex (preBötC) through which mock cerebrospinal fluid (mCSF) was dialyzed. Effluent mCSF was collected …

Oral Region Homologies In Paleozoic Crinoids And Other Plesiomorphic Pentaradial Echinoderms, Thomas W. Kammer, Colin D. Sumrall, Samuel Zamora, William I. Ausich, Bradley Deline
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The phylogenetic relationships between major groups of plesiomorphic pentaradial echinoderms, the Paleozoic crinoids, blastozoans, and edrioasteroids, are poorly understood because of a lack of widely recognized homologies. Here, we present newly recognized oral region homologies, based on the Universal Elemental Homology model for skeletal plates, in a wide range of fossil taxa. The oral region of echinoderms is mainly composed of the axial, or ambulacral, skeleton, which apparently evolved more slowly than the extraxial skeleton that forms the majority of the body. Recent phylogenetic hypotheses have focused on characters of the extraxial skeleton, which may have evolved too rapidly to …

Use Of Magnetic And Olfactory Cues For Orientation By A Fossorial Rodent, Thomomys Talpoides, Dustin J. Cousins
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Fossorial, or below ground, living provides shelter from the elements and some predators, but comes at a cost with respect to metabolic requirements of movement and reduced, or altered, sensory cues. I examined the ability of the North American pocket gopher, Thomomys talpoides, to use magnetoreception and olfaction in navigation and foraging. Magnetoreception was tested using three manipulative experiments: 1) field homing of displaced animals, 2) nest location in an 8-arm maze, and 3) movement through a complex labyrinth. Homing results, analyzed by V-test, indicated that the gophers displaced from their burrow systems relied on magnetic cues for homing orientation. …

Enlightenment Science And Nano-Science: Creating Order Out Of Magic, Elizabeth Ramsey Frey
Enlightenment Science And Nano-Science: Creating Order Out Of Magic, Elizabeth Ramsey Frey
Honors Theses
People today live in a world dominated by technology. All of the conveniences and technologies people enjoy and utilize today, however, would not exist without the foundation of empirical science laid during the Enlightenment. This thesis looks at the Enlightenment both as a philosophical movement and as the setting of the Scientific Revolution. The leaders of the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution began the tradition of utilizing reason in research, founded empirical science, and developed the scientific method. This thesis traces the development of science during the Enlightenment and seeks to prove that Enlightenment science set the stage for the science …
Thematic Transformation In The Operas Of Francis Poulenc: Gender, Spiritual, And Psychological, Elizabeth Brooks Bruening
Thematic Transformation In The Operas Of Francis Poulenc: Gender, Spiritual, And Psychological, Elizabeth Brooks Bruening

Although Francis Poulenc is perhaps best known for his one hundred and fifty contributions to the genre of French art song, melodie, this study focuses on his mere three operatic compositions. This work illustrates and analyzes the theme of transformation within each of Francis Poulenc’s three operatic compositions: gender transformation of Les Mamelles des Tiresias (1944), spiritual transformation of Dialogues des Carmelites (1953), and psychological transformation of La Voix humaine (1959). Research was conducted through viewing each production and studying its musical score and libretto. Published works ranging from scholarly articles to Poulenc’s personal journal were consulted in order to …
The Art Of Peking Opera: Chinese And European Operatic Traditions: Commonalities And Divergences, Portia Nicole Davis
The Art Of Peking Opera: Chinese And European Operatic Traditions: Commonalities And Divergences, Portia Nicole Davis
Honors Theses
Peking opera is an art form that combines music, singing, dancing, acting, and acrobatics. The skill necessary for performance is shown through the vigorous training required of the actors that portray characters on stage. A study of Peking opera’s history allows a better understanding of the developments and changes that have occurred to make Peking opera what it is today. Peking opera’s costuming and makeup, stylized movements, and stage presence set it apart from other Chinese art forms and operas that one could see around the world today. One major development of Peking opera occurred during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). …

Nuove Esplorazioni In Ognina, Sicily, Gabrielle Dianne Coggin
Honors Theses
My thesis was built around my excavations in Sicily during the summer of 2012. I researched a church on a small islet, and some of its findings over the years. Not only did I use my excavation notes, but I also used the notes from the earlier excavation of the same site in the 1960s. I needed expert advice on the building and the lamp that was found, so I contacted a Byzantine architecture specialist, and an ancient lamp specialist to obtain their opinions on the site. In order to understand the findings from 2012,1 researched the basic history of …
The Pilgrimage Of Ibn Jubayr: A Microhistory Of Travel During The Late Twelfth Century, Trevor David Johnson
The Pilgrimage Of Ibn Jubayr: A Microhistory Of Travel During The Late Twelfth Century, Trevor David Johnson
Honors Theses
This thesis focuses on The Travels of Ibn Jubayr. Ibn Jubayr was a Muslim pilgrim from medieval Spain who made a religious pilgrimage to Mecca between 1183 and 1185. Temporally this places him on the eve of the Third Crusade. Ibn Jubayr traveled throughout the Mediterranean world and the Arabian Peninsula. It is his travelogue that provides a template for understanding the conditions of travelling that Ibn Jubayr and his contemporaries would have faced. The primary research question of my study is: what did travel in the late twelfth century entail? The core of this thesis revolves around the aspects …

Every world culture defines itself differently through the application of similar qualifying processes. Gastronomy is an important one of these processes. This thesis aims to explain how food both aids in and exists as a reflection of cultural identity by asking these questions: What are the specifics of how gastronomical processes are applied in Uruguay and the Mississippi Delta? Do the two regions share similar cultural identification structures? If so, in what ways are they similar, and what do these similarities mean in the context of identity construction? In doing this, | aim to explain why culinary practices, more so …
Federal Farm Subsidies And Industrial Agriculture: A Case Study In Mississippi Agriculture And Policy Analysis, Travis Lenti Gray
Federal Farm Subsidies And Industrial Agriculture: A Case Study In Mississippi Agriculture And Policy Analysis, Travis Lenti Gray
Honors Theses
Over the last century, federal agricultural policy has shifted from supporting family farmers to protecting profits for a handful of the largest agricultural corporations and food producers. By guaranteeing a price-floor for commodity crops, farm subsidies encourage farmers to overproduce with no regard to traditional supply and demand economics. Under the current system, commodity crops are exceptionally cheap. The emphasis on quantity over quality has led to an array of negative externalities in this country, which include environmental, public health, and economic consequences.
This research attempts to determine the economic feasibility of farm subsidy reform by examining the impact of …
