The Laboratory Evaluation Of Bio Oil Derived From Waste Resources As Extender For Asphalt Binder, Xu Yang Jan 2013

The Laboratory Evaluation Of Bio Oil Derived From Waste Resources As Extender For Asphalt Binder, Xu Yang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A shortage of petroleum asphalt is creating opportunities for engineers to utilize alternative pavement materials. Three types of bio oils, original bio oil (OB), dewatered bio oil (DWB) and polymer-modified bio oil (PMB) were used to modify and partially replace petroleum asphalt in this research. The research investigated the procedure of producing bio oil, the rheological properties of asphalt binders modified and partially replaced by bio oil, and the mechanical performances of asphalt mixtures modified by bio oil. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) is conducted on the test results for the significance analysis. The main finding of the study includes: …

Agroforestry Addressing Social And Environmental Issues In Paraguay, Brian T. Pattullo Jan 2013

Agroforestry Addressing Social And Environmental Issues In Paraguay, Brian T. Pattullo

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Paraguay is characterized in part by an economy reliant on a massive soy industry and as facing social and economic challenges resulting from highly inequitable distribution of wealth and land ownership, particularly for smallholder farmers in the rural areas of the country. Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), a native tree of which the leaves are used in tea, has become an increasingly common crop grown among common among smallholder farmers (owners of 10 hectares or less) as a viable alternative to soy production on a small scale. In the rural agricultural community of Libertad del Sur, located in the …

Potential Natural Product Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors, Michael John Cunningham Jan 2013

Potential Natural Product Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors, Michael John Cunningham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three different studies set forth to investigate the role of phosphodiesterase (PDE) enzyme inhibitors in sexual dysfunction and mood regulation. First, naturalproducts were screened by computer modeling of PDE5A1. Second, compounds were isolated from a plant traditionally used as an aphrodisiac. Third, a new synthesis of psychoactive PDE4 inhibitor was attempted. An in silico screen was performed using chemical structures of isolated compounds thought to have some PDE inhibitory activity based on traditional use of the plants. A collection of compounds with structures similar to known natural product inhibitors was also included in the docking library. Glide docking software (Schrödinger) …

Large Eddy Simulation Of Surface Pressure Fluctuations Generated By Elevated Gusts, Jericho Erin Cain Jan 2013

Large Eddy Simulation Of Surface Pressure Fluctuations Generated By Elevated Gusts, Jericho Erin Cain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wind gusts cause substantial damage to wind turbines. If these damaging winds could be detected prior to their interaction with the turbine, the turbine rotor can be decoupled from the generator and gearing system to prevent damage during the gust event. This would significantly reduce wind turbine repair costs. Wind gusts can also create unsafe conditions for aircraft landing. A ground based detection system that monitored elevated wind gusts can provide new information for pilots to use when determining whether or not it is safe to land. In addition, the ability to monitor elevated gust events would provide a new …

Bacterial Assemblages And Microbial Enzyme Activity In The Major Tributaries Of The Lower Mississippi River, Justin Millar Jan 2013

Bacterial Assemblages And Microbial Enzyme Activity In The Major Tributaries Of The Lower Mississippi River, Justin Millar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spatial variation in the structure and function of bacterial communities is far more complex than previously believed. High throughput sequencing techniques have begun to elucidate the dynamic worldwide patterns of bacterial biogeography; however, there are still many ecosystems for which there is little to no representative data. Currently there are no high throughput-based analyses of bacterial assemblages in large rivers. Rivers form important connections between terrestrial land use and marine biogeochemistry and act as conduits for organisms and allochthonous nutrients. Bacteria dominate carbon cycling and nutrient processing in rivers, and therefore can influence regional and global elemental cycles. This study …

Context Matters: Studying Indigenous Religions In North America, Sarah King Jan 2013

Context Matters: Studying Indigenous Religions In North America, Sarah King

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Context is critically important to the study of indigenous religions in North America. This paper argues that the significance of context to indigenous (native, Indian, tribal, or aboriginal) religions is unique and particular. In studying indigenous religions, attending to context engages geographical, political, and methodological issues, which emphasize the diversity of indigenous ideas and experience. The Mi’kmaq relationship to their homeland, Mi’kma’ki, demonstrates the importance of land as fundamental context for indigenous religions; the figure of Kateri Tekakwitha illuminates the inextricably political nature of indigenous religions. Finally, methods, theories, and practices (such as self-reflexivity) that have arisen in indigenous contexts are …

The Transformative Potential Of Attorney Bilingualism, Jayesh Rathod Jan 2013

The Transformative Potential Of Attorney Bilingualism, Jayesh Rathod

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

In contemporary U.S. law practice, attorney bilingualism is increasingly valued, primarily because it allows lawyers to work more efficiently and to pursue a broader range of professional opportunities. This purely functionalist conceptualization of attorney bilingualism, however, ignores the surprising ways in which multilingualism can enhance a lawyer’s professional work and can strengthen and reshape relationships among actors in the U.S. legal milieu. Drawing upon research from psychology, linguistics, and other disciplines, this Article advances a theory of the transformative potential of attorney bilingualism. Looking first to the development of lawyers themselves, the Article posits that attorneys who operate bilingually may, …

Scientism, Philosophy And Brain-Based Learning, Gregory M. Nixon Jan 2013

Scientism, Philosophy And Brain-Based Learning, Gregory M. Nixon

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Since educators are always looking for ways to improve their practice, and since empirical science is now accepted in our worldview as the final arbiter of truth, it is no surprise they have been lured toward cognitive neuroscience in hopes that discovering how the brain learns will provide a nutshell explanation for student learning in general. I argue that identifying the person with the brain is scientism (not science), that the brain is not the person, and that it is the person who learns. In fact, the brain only responds to the learning of embodied experience within the extra-neural network …

Living The Flourish Question: Positivity As An Orientation For The Preparation Of Teacher Candidates, Sabre Cherkowski, Keith Walker Jan 2013

Living The Flourish Question: Positivity As An Orientation For The Preparation Of Teacher Candidates, Sabre Cherkowski, Keith Walker

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

In this article, the authors unpack taken-for-granted elements in a question central to their research and teaching: “What if the primary role of teachers is to learn how to thrive as educators and, in so doing, to continually co-explore and facilitate all means by which everyone in their learning communities flourishes most of the time?” As they explore a positive orientation to teaching and research, they work to understand the potential for generative and positive growth in themselves and school communities. Their article focuses upon seeking to create and sustain personal and professional flourishing at the heart of educational practice …

An Analysis Of A Suburban School District's Referral, Assessment, And Identification Processes For Gifted Evaluations, Brandie Tallman Arnold Jan 2013

An Analysis Of A Suburban School District's Referral, Assessment, And Identification Processes For Gifted Evaluations, Brandie Tallman Arnold

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

A review of the literature pertaining to giftedness reveals a myriad of differing conceptualizations, as well as varied recommendations for procedures within the referral and identification processes. With such diverse frameworks for understanding components of giftedness, as well as competing views about how giftedness is most accurately identified, a universally agreed upon process for defining and identifying giftedness has yet to be achieved. The purpose of this proposed study will be to examine the referral, identification, and outcomes process of one Pennsylvania public school district’s gifted evaluation process. Specifically, this action-oriented research study sets out to determine (1) the demographic …

Identifying Emotional Disturbance: Implications For Consistent Practice, Ramona L. Patillo Jan 2013

Identifying Emotional Disturbance: Implications For Consistent Practice, Ramona L. Patillo

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Determining eligibility for special education services under the educational classification of Emotional Disturbance (ED) has historically posed difficulties for school psychologists. The federal law provides vague eligibility criteria and a clear exclusion for students with Social Maladjustment (SM). This study evaluated the results of an online survey that required participants to identify behaviors that are most commonly associated with the constructs of ED and SM. This study further proposed to assess levels of comfort in determining eligibility based on a constellation of behavioral symptoms presented in short case vignettes. The study sought to reveal any differences in symptom identification based …

Integrated Health Care Collaboration And Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated With Streptococcal Infections: A Working Model For Case Consultation, Tara M. Habecker-Tumilty Jan 2013

Integrated Health Care Collaboration And Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated With Streptococcal Infections: A Working Model For Case Consultation, Tara M. Habecker-Tumilty

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Historically, integrated health care, often referred to as interdisciplinary health care, has been an approach characterized by a high degree of collaboration and communication among health care professionals. While numerous researchers have explored the benefits of including clinical psychologists as team members, a limited body of research has explored the partnership between school psychologists and physicians, even though school health services can be an effective venue for integrating psychosocial care and education with medical care. As more chronically ill children are reintegrated into school, school psychologists must be prepared to work with these children at school. Children
diagnosed with complex …

Electroporation-Mediated Gene Transfer Directly To The Swine Heart, Barbara Hargrave, Harre Downey, Cathryn Lundberg, Annelise Israel, Yeong-Jer Chen, Richard Heller

Bioelectrics Publications

In vivo gene transfer to the ischemic heart via electroporation holds promise as a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of heart disease. In the current study, we investigated the use of in vivo electroporation for gene transfer using three different penetrating electrodes and one non-penetrating electrode. The hearts of adult male swine were exposed through a sternotomy. Eight electric pulses synchronized to the rising phase of the R wave of the electrocardiogram were administered at varying pulse widths and field strengths following an injection of either a plasmid encoding luciferase or one encoding green fluorescent protein. Four sites on …

Patterns In The Sacred Music Culture Of The American South And West (1700-1820), Nikos A. Pappas Jan 2013

Patterns In The Sacred Music Culture Of The American South And West (1700-1820), Nikos A. Pappas

Theses and Dissertations--Music

This narrative chronicles the dissemination of sacred music from the eastern seaboard to the West and South spanning a time frame from the colonial era to the latter part of the Early Nationalist Period (1700-1820). Musical culture in its migration away from the eastern seaboard also parallels the greater western and southern expansion of the United States from its initial configuration of localized regional subgroups to the beginnings of a larger national identity. From this conceptual base, sacred music becomes a vehicle for understanding not only religious and musical changes over time, but also the broader maturity of a nation. …

What Is The Next Step For Companion Pets In The Legal System? The Answer May Lie With The Historical Development Of The Legal Rights For Minors, Schyler P. Simmons Jan 2013

What Is The Next Step For Companion Pets In The Legal System? The Answer May Lie With The Historical Development Of The Legal Rights For Minors, Schyler P. Simmons

Texas A&M Law Review

The relationship between human beings and companion pets is changing. For purposes of this Comment, companion pets are the dogs and cats that people share their homes with. Today, more households have a dog or cat than children. Despite the social changes, companion pets are still classified as property. At some point in history, minors, women, and slaves were also classified as property. Through social revolutions, such as the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Women’s Rights Movement, property classification for humans was dismantled. This Comment discusses the progression of minors’ rights and protections and how companion pets …

E&P Lending: Due Diligence And Collateral Legal Issues In E&P Lending Deals For The Texas Law Man In Particular, Jason A. Schumacher

Texas A&M Law Review

Oil and gas companies frequently use debt financing in order to provide the large capital required to explore and develop largeacreage blocks. With the rise of horizontal drilling in combination with multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, the average cost per well has skyrocketed. In order to access a bank’s cheaper money, an oil and gas company normally must have already found something worth finding. In return for a beneficial interest rate from a bank (as opposed to splitting the profits of the company with equity partners or paying mezzanine debt interest rates), the oil and gas company must get more ducks in …

Endangered Species In The Oil Patch: Challenges And Opportunities For The Oil And Gas Industry, Gabriel Eckstein, Jesse Snyder Jan 2013

Endangered Species In The Oil Patch: Challenges And Opportunities For The Oil And Gas Industry, Gabriel Eckstein, Jesse Snyder

Texas A&M Law Review

Tension among competing interests is nothing new in environmental law. Even among the most tenacious adversaries, the ability to find common ground can serve as an impetus to further the aims of both industry and environmental proponents. Broadly speaking, advocates of the oil and gas industry prefer few restraints, if any, on exploration, development, and production. Comparatively, champions of biological and ecological preservation favor regulatory protections to conserve these interests. Cutting across these often disparate objectives, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) presents a not-so-obvious opportunity for both sides to receive a share of the pie through cooperation and forward planning. …

It's In Minnesota's Nature: An Exploration Into Building Social Capital Through Place Branding, Alyssa Michelle Chandler Jan 2013

It's In Minnesota's Nature: An Exploration Into Building Social Capital Through Place Branding, Alyssa Michelle Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

Place branding is a growing practice in communities worldwide. While much academic research has been conducted on the subject, the majority is directed toward the study of tourist perceptions. Research on those living in a branded community is limited. Therefore, this study seeks to explore how a place brand could build or strengthen social capital among residents of a location through a shared representation of a community's identity. A case study was conducted in Grand Rapids, Minnesota where 30 residents were interviewed from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Through the lens of the seven community capitals, discussed in Flora and Flora (2009), …

Household-Level Effects Of Electricity On Income, Brandon Bridge, Dadhi Adhikari, Matías Fontenla Jan 2013

Household-Level Effects Of Electricity On Income, Brandon Bridge, Dadhi Adhikari, Matías Fontenla

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

This paper studies the effect of electricity on income, using the Nepal Living Standards Survey-III (NLSSIII), carried out in the years 2010-11. To account for endogeneity issues, we use Three Stage Least Squares (3SLS), and Two Stage Probit Least Squares (2SPLS) models. We find that causality runs both ways. That is, income explains whether a household is connected to electricity, but also, a household being connected to electricity has a very large and significant effect on income. A household being connected to electricity increases consumption per capita by 18% on average.
