Mythmaking: How Introductory Psychology Texts Present B. F. Skinner's Analysis Of Cognition, Robert Jensen, Helene Burgess Nov 2012

Mythmaking: How Introductory Psychology Texts Present B. F. Skinner's Analysis Of Cognition, Robert Jensen, Helene Burgess

The Psychological Record

Fifteen introductory psychology textbooks are examined to determine the accuracy and completeness of their treatment of B. F. Skinner's approach to human activities commonly referred to as cognitive processes. Six of the textbooks ignore Skinner's contribution to the study of cognitive variables altogether, four deny that Skinner had anything to say about such processes and five textbooks acknowledge elements of Skinner's viewpoint, though the acknowledgments are incomplete and suffer from inaccuracies. Discussion encourages textbook writers and publishers to present a more accurate and complete picture of the discipline of psychology for the introductory student.

Three Contributions Of Social Psychology To The Analysis Of The Behavior-Consequence Linkage, John H. Kunkel Nov 2012

Three Contributions Of Social Psychology To The Analysis Of The Behavior-Consequence Linkage, John H. Kunkel

The Psychological Record

This article describes major differences in research focus and methods between behavior analysis and social psychology, and it outlines some of the ways in which fruitful cooperation between the two fields can be established. Attribution, optimism, and time horizons are considered to be measures of past behavior-consequence linkages, which provide information about otherwise unknown aspects of people's learning histories. Experiments in these research areas of social psychology contribute to the improvement of the three-term contingency by (a) introducing past experiences and (b) providing explanations of behavior variability in the laboratory and in daily life.

Behavior-Analytic Approaches To Self-Awareness, Simon Dymond, Dermot Barnes Nov 2012

Behavior-Analytic Approaches To Self-Awareness, Simon Dymond, Dermot Barnes

The Psychological Record

The current paper provides an overview of behavior-analytic approaches to self-awareness. Skinner (1974) argued that the phenomenon of self-awareness is produced, in large part, by those social contingencies that reinforce discrimination of the organism’s own behavior. This view of self-awareness is supported by a range of empirical studies that successfully established self-discrimination performances in both nonhuman and human subjects. Recent developments in basic, applied, and conceptual analyses are currently extending Skinner's behavior-analytic definition of self-awareness. The current paper focuses on a relational frame interpretation of human self-discrimination.

Behavioral Changes For African Americans To Improve Health, Embrace Culture, And Minimize Disparities, Dashiel J. Geyen Ed.D., M.P.H. Nov 2012

Behavioral Changes For African Americans To Improve Health, Embrace Culture, And Minimize Disparities, Dashiel J. Geyen Ed.D., M.P.H.

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

In spite of significant advances in the prevention, diagnoses, and treatment of most chronic diseases, there is evidence that racial and ethnic people of color tend to receive lower quality of care and less preventive interventions than the majority members of a community. While our health system should improve its efforts at addressing and reducing disproportionality in health care, African Americans can make behavioral changes through diet and exercise that will reduce their susceptibility to chronic illnesses. This article first reviews the prevalence, disparities, and characteristics of chronic diseases impacting the African American population. Second, it discusses culturally connected practices …

Educational Genocide: Examining The Impact Of National Education Policy On African American Communities, Christopher B. Knaus, Rachelle Rogers-Ard Nov 2012

Educational Genocide: Examining The Impact Of National Education Policy On African American Communities, Christopher B. Knaus, Rachelle Rogers-Ard

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

Abstract This paper clarifies the cumulative impact of the current national education policy on African-American children, which ultimately aims to limit local control of urban schools. The authors argue that urban schools in the United States are increasingly required to rely upon temporary teachers who are trained to implement a curriculum focused on standardized testing. The No Child Left Behind Act and the current Duncan administration’s approach to closing (and re-opening) schools combines to further exclude low-income community involvement in local schools. These efforts to control the development, hiring, and evaluation of local educators further expands educational racism that silences …

Praying Hands: Influences Of Religiosity And Spirituality On Sexual Risk-Taking Among Black, College-Attending Emerging Adults, Tralonda C. Triplett

Open Access Dissertations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed persistent disproportionate burdens of HIV/AIDS among Black populations in the United States. While treatment advancements have greatly improved qualities of life for persons living with HIV/AIDS, prevention efforts remain focused to reduce incidence among vulnerable populations. Research distinguishing emerging adulthood in the US has characterized it entailing identity formations influencing sexual risk-taking. Religiosity and spirituality have remained pivotal in Black cultures influencing beliefs and normative behaviors around pre-marital sex. The Praying Hands study combines ethnic, demographic, contextual and socio-environmental factors to investigate influences of religiosity and spirituality on HIV risks among …

Investigating The Dynamics Of Basaltic Volcano Magmatic Systems With Space Geodesy, Michael S. Baker Nov 2012

Investigating The Dynamics Of Basaltic Volcano Magmatic Systems With Space Geodesy, Michael S. Baker

Open Access Dissertations

Many discoveries have been made about the dynamics of active volcanoes around the world. Studies of the physical and chemical processes have lead to a better understanding of magma generation, evolution, and collection within the crust. The purpose of this research is to use space geodetic techniques to generate time series of surface displacements to study and monitor active volcanoes. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and global positioning system (GPS) data provide a way to measure the displacement associated with the migration and storage of magma within a volcano at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. With these data, we can …

What's A Name Worth?: Experimental Tests Of The Value Of Attribution In Intellectual Property, Christopher J. Buccafusco, Christopher Jon Sprigman, Zachary C. Burns

Despite considerable research suggesting that creators value attribution – i.e., being named as the creator of a work – U.S. intellectual property (IP) law does not provide a right to attribution to the vast majority of creators. On the other side of the Atlantic, however, many European countries give creators, at least in their copyright laws, much stronger rights to attribution. At first blush it may seem that the U.S. has gotten it wrong, and the Europeans have made a better policy choice in providing to creators a right that they value. But for reasons we will explain in this …

How To Facilitate Damage Claims? Private Enforcement Of Competition Rules In Croatia – Domestic And Eu Law Perspective, Jasminka Pecotić Kaufman Nov 2012

How To Facilitate Damage Claims? Private Enforcement Of Competition Rules In Croatia – Domestic And Eu Law Perspective, Jasminka Pecotić Kaufman

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

Ever since the Croatian Competition Agency started functioning in 1997, public enforcement of competition law has been the norm. Civil actions for breaches of competition law have been the exception in Croatia. The existing legislation in the area of competition law makes no effort to incentivise private enforcement. There are no specific rules in the Competition Act 2009 dedicated to civil actions, except a single provision that assigns jurisdiction over damages claims to commercial courts. General tort law is applicable in order to prove damages. A number of issues arise here mostly due to the complexity of competition cases. These …

The European Commission published a White Paper on 2 April 2008 on damages actions for breach of EU antitrust rules. The content of the White Paper is since then being prepared to be converted into EU legislation on private antitrust enforcement. This paper presents the developments in private antitrust enforcement in Poland after 2 April 2008. It commences with an outline of EU actions in this field which act as an introduction to the more detailed analysis of recent jurisprudential and legislative developments in Poland. The latter part of the paper covers, in particular, the 2009 Act on the Pursuit …

Development Of The Judicial Review Of The Decisions Of The Antimonopoly Office Of The Slovak Republic, Silvia Šramelová, Andrea Šupáková

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The article focuses solely on judicial review of decisions issued by the National Competition Authority of the Slovak Republic. Slovak courts dealt with several key issues concerning public enforcement of competition law such as: the application of the so-called ‘general clause’; competences of the Slovak competition authority in regulated sectors; and the application of the economic continuity test. Some of the conclusions resulting from these judgments may be considered disputable. …

Universal Service Obligation And Loyalty Effects: An Agent-Based Modelling Approach, Dilyara Bakhtieva, Kamil Kiljański Nov 2012

Universal Service Obligation And Loyalty Effects: An Agent-Based Modelling Approach, Dilyara Bakhtieva, Kamil Kiljański

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

In network industries, a Universal Service Obligation (USO) is often seen as a burden on an incumbent, which requires compensation for the net cost of such service provision. This paper estimates the effects of consumer loyalty as an intangible benefit of USO in the postal sector. In doing so, the agent-based modelling (ABM) approach is applied, which makes it possible to model the behaviour of boundedly rational consumers and is thus particularly appropriate for taking into account intangibles considerations. The analysis shows that loyalty is crucial to whether the USO uniform pricing constraint results in loss-making or profitability. Under certain …

To Regulate Or Not To Regulate? – Economic Approach To Indefeasible Right Of Use (Iru), Magdalena Olender-Skorek Nov 2012

To Regulate Or Not To Regulate? – Economic Approach To Indefeasible Right Of Use (Iru), Magdalena Olender-Skorek

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The aim of this paper is to present an Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) as a possible remedy for telecom infrastructure EU projects that (in Poland) have been lagged behind the time. Thanks for IRU, Beneficiaries of these EU projects will be able to save both: time and money and will finish projects successfully. The author discusses two possible methods of implementing IRU: via regulatory obligation and via incumbent’s goodwill. The author proposes a game theory model with payoffs depending on regulator’s and incumbent’s strategies. Using a game theory tree, the author shows that if only the incumbent is willing …
