South Mississippi High School Seniors’ Perceptions Of Civic Duties And Responsibilities, Chelsea L. Lewis Dec 2012

South Mississippi High School Seniors’ Perceptions Of Civic Duties And Responsibilities, Chelsea L. Lewis

Honors Theses

Former United States Representative Lee Hamilton once explained what it takes to be a citizen of the United Stated. He stated, “Citizenship requires both knowledge about government and the ability to be involved in governance. It means knowing how to identify and inform oneself about issues, explore and evaluate possible solutions, and then act to resolve problems. It demands that you know how to interact respectfully with others. And it asks that you accept responsibility for meeting your community’s and the nation’s challenges.” (Hamilton, 1) This quote comes from a well-known civics program used in American high schools today called …

Using Gis And Remote Sensing Applications To Determine Recovery From Disaster: Seven Years Post-Katrina In Residential Communities Of Hancock County, Carlton P. Anderson Dec 2012

Using Gis And Remote Sensing Applications To Determine Recovery From Disaster: Seven Years Post-Katrina In Residential Communities Of Hancock County, Carlton P. Anderson

Honors Theses

Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf coast states of Louisiana and Mississippi on August 29th, 2005. The communities of Shoreline Park and Waveland in Hancock County, Mississippi were used in this study to analyze land use change post-Hurricane Katrina using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. These two communities are experiencing slower recovery than their counterparts along the coast. By examining high-resolution aerial imagery from 2007 and 2012, there can be comparisons that show the timeline of recovery for these two communities post-Katrina. Shoreline Park has seen 30% of its total parcels change their structural footprints from 2007 – 2012 …

Ghosts Of The Mind: The Supernatural And Madness In Victorian Gothic Literature, Stephanie F. Craig Dec 2012

Ghosts Of The Mind: The Supernatural And Madness In Victorian Gothic Literature, Stephanie F. Craig

Honors Theses

The Victorian era was arguably the most productive time for the Gothic genre. Laden with supernatural experiences and insanity around every corner, the Gothic created a distinct genre of eeriness and morbidity. The key to understanding the genre’s development lies in the culture that caused it to thrive. Victorian culture saw the emergence of supernatural experimentation, particularly in the Spiritualist movement, as well as the further development of psychology. These elements of Victorian culture are crucial in the development of the Gothic genre. Just as political or economic factors may influence the style, content, and format of a literary genre, …

Parenting Styles, Peer Pressure, And The Formation Of Antisocial Behavior, Erinisha L. Johnson Dec 2012

Parenting Styles, Peer Pressure, And The Formation Of Antisocial Behavior, Erinisha L. Johnson

Honors Theses

The current study examined the relationship between antisocial behavior, negative parenting, and peer pressure. It was predicted that peer pressure and negative parenting would be positively correlated with antisocial behavior, but that negative parenting would be more statistically significant. There were 177 male and female college students who completed the Subtypes of Antisocial Behavior questionnaire, the Measurement of Parenting Style, the Peer Pressure and Popularity questionnaire, and a short demographics survey. Results indicated that negative parenting and peer pressure were both related to antisocial behavior (p< .001). However, the final hypothesis was rejected because the results indicated that peer pressure (p < .001) and not negative parenting (p<.05), showed to be more statistically significant. It may be suggested that peer pressure may overpower parenting, after a certain age.

English Identity In The Writings Of John Milton, Hannah E. Ryan Dec 2012

English Identity In The Writings Of John Milton, Hannah E. Ryan

Honors Theses

John Milton is an essential writer to the English canon. Understanding his life and thought is necessary to understanding his corpus. This thesis will examine Milton’s nationalism in several major and minor poems as well as in some of Milton’s prose. It will argue that Milton’s nationalism is difficult to trace chronologically, but that education is always essential to Milton’s national vision of England.

Effect Of Msa On Antibiotic Resistance And Allelic Replacement Of Pkor1 In Staphylococcus Aureus, Jordan M. Towne Dec 2012

Effect Of Msa On Antibiotic Resistance And Allelic Replacement Of Pkor1 In Staphylococcus Aureus, Jordan M. Towne

Honors Theses

Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogen that causes hospital and community-acquired infections (52). These infections are difficult to treat due to resistance to a wide range of antibiotics and spread of antibiotic-resistant strains (13, 52). S. aureus causes infection by regulation of accessory genes encoding for expression of factors contributing to virulence (9, 11, 12, 29, 34, 43, 45), including severe infection, biofilm formation, autolysis, and antibiotic resistance (4, 5, 7, 27, 56). Actually, extracellular DNA and nutrient release during autolysis has been shown to contribute to the ability of bacteria to form and maintain a biofilm as well …

The Homeless Perception Of Services, Alexander K. Pickle Dec 2012

The Homeless Perception Of Services, Alexander K. Pickle

Honors Theses

This study, recognizing a lack of academic research into the homeless population’s needs, approaches the problem of needs assessment of the homeless through the context of customer service. The literature points to a discontentment with the classic shelter model, and potential positives in newer, emerging alternatives. Using the “Gap Model of Service Quality”, qualitative interviews were structured and scheduled with the homeless individuals in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The study encountered many obstacles, including lack of participation. Due to these complications, it could not come to any meaningful conclusions; however, there are multiple avenues for further research that developed through the process.

'In A Settled Country, Everyone Must Eat': Four Questions About Transnational Private Regulation, Migration, And Migrant Work, Amar Bhatia Dec 2012

'In A Settled Country, Everyone Must Eat': Four Questions About Transnational Private Regulation, Migration, And Migrant Work, Amar Bhatia

Articles & Book Chapters

This introduction speaks to one of the questions raised by transnational private regulation: is migration always transnational? One quick answer to this question might be ‘no’. If migration is concerned with the international movement of people, then what has been called the approach of methodological nationalism would force out the ‘trans-‐’ and always substitute the international. Since methodological nationalism is an approach characterized by an overdue emphasis on states and their external borders as the sole arbiters for what registers as movement, then this answer would not surprise anyone. However, if we do not take a monopolistic approach to borders, …

Numerical Simulation Of Particle-Driven Gravity Currents, Sangdo An, Pierre Y. Julien, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy Dec 2012

Numerical Simulation Of Particle-Driven Gravity Currents, Sangdo An, Pierre Y. Julien, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Particle-driven gravity currents frequently occur in nature, for instance as turbidity currents in reservoirs. They are produced by the buoyant forces between fluids of different density and can introduce sediments and pollutants into water bodies. In this study, the propagation dynamics of gravity currents is investigated using the FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics code. The performance of the numerical model using two different turbulence closure schemes namely the renormalization group (RNG) k-ε scheme in a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes framework (RANS) and the large-eddy simulation (LES) technique using the Smagorinsky scheme, were compared with laboratory experiments. The numerical simulations focus on two different …

Effects Of Ownership Intuitions On Allocations In The Dictator Game, John Christner Dec 2012

Effects Of Ownership Intuitions On Allocations In The Dictator Game, John Christner

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

People’s implicit assumptions about ownership might influence their decisions in Dictator Games: DG), leading to generosity. Two studies tested subjects’ intuitions concerning ownership in fictional situations structurally analogous to the DG. Subjects read a story about a ritual in which an old man: experimenter in DG) provided an endowment that Person 1: dictator in DG) had to allocate between self and Person 2: receiver in DG). Subjects were told that in some instances the ritual was interrupted before completion. As an assay of their intuitions regarding ownership, subjects were asked who owned the endowment and how it should be allocated …

The Twilight Of Equity Liquidity, Jeff Schwartz Dec 2012

The Twilight Of Equity Liquidity, Jeff Schwartz

Cardozo Law Review

This Article argues that U.S. equity markets fail to offer a satisfactory listing venue for emerging firms. I contend that this lacuna is a manifestation of a flawed structure of equity-market regulation and that this void undermines entrepreneurship, jeopardizes the future of U.S. equity markets, and weakens the broader U.S. economy. To close this gap and respond to these concerns, I recommend a new theoretical structure for regulating equity markets. Under the "lifecycle model" I propose, regulations would adapt to firms as they age. The key change would be to establish a market specifically for newly-public young firms, where they …

Convenience In The Mutual Fund Industry, George D. Cashman Dec 2012

Convenience In The Mutual Fund Industry, George D. Cashman

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

Abstract

I examine the role of convenience in the mutual fund industry. I find that investors pay more for relatively convenient funds, and that the flows to convenient funds are less responsive to performance. These findings suggest that investors do not evaluate mutual funds independently, but rather that investors select a primary fund, likely based on beliefs about managerial ability, and then select funds which are relatively convenient to this primary fund.

Highlights

► I find that investors pay a significant premium to invest in convenient mutual funds. ► I find that the flows to convenient funds are indifferent to …

The Irony Of Privacy Class Action Litigation, Eric Goldman Dec 2012

The Irony Of Privacy Class Action Litigation, Eric Goldman

Faculty Publications

In the past few years, publicized privacy violations have regularly spawned class action lawsuits in the United States, even when the company made a good faith mistake and no victim suffered any quantifiable harm. Privacy advocates often cheer these lawsuits because they generally favor vigorous enforcement of privacy violations, but this essay encourages privacy advocates to reconsider their support for privacy class action litigation. By its nature, class action litigation uses tactics that privacy advocates disavow. Thus, using class action litigation to remediate privacy violations proves to be unintentionally ironic.

Optimization Of Nonlinear Switch Cells For Switching Converters, Bradley Alan Reese Dec 2012

Optimization Of Nonlinear Switch Cells For Switching Converters, Bradley Alan Reese

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Switch cells consist of an array of power switches and passive components which can replace the main switches alone in many power topologies, allowing reduced switching loss without altering the power topology directly. This thesis discusses the development of a switch cell topology that utilizes a saturable resonant inductor to reduce the size and power loss of the cell. Additionally, the cell transfers energy stored in the inductor into a capacitor for efficient energy storage during the cell's conduction region. This energy is then transferred back to the system when the cell turns off, thus reducing the total switching energy.

Cytoskeletal Strains In Modeled Optohydrodynamically Stressed Healthy And Diseased Biological Cells, Sean S. Kohles, Yu Liang, Asit K. Saha

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Controlled external chemomechanical stimuli have been shown to influence cellular and tissue regeneration/degeneration, especially with regards to distinct disease sequelae or health maintenance. Recently, a unique three-dimensional stress state was mathematically derived to describe the experimental stresses applied to isolated living cells suspended in an optohydrodynamic trap (optical tweezers combined with microfluidics). These formulae were previously developed in two and three dimensions from the fundamental equations describing creeping flows past a suspended sphere. The objective of the current study is to determine the full-field cellular strain response due to the applied three-dimensional stress environment through a multiphysics computational simulation. In …

In an effort to better understand the ancestral state of the human distal gut microbiome, we examine feces retrieved from archaeological contexts (coprolites). To accomplish this, we pyrosequenced the 16S rDNA V3 region from duplicate coprolite samples recovered from three archaeological sites, each representing a different depositional environment: Hinds Cave (~8000 years B.P.) in the southern United States, Caserones (1600 years B.P.) in northern Chile, and Rio Zape in northern Mexico (1400 years B.P.). Clustering algorithms grouped samples from the same site. Phyletic representation was more similar within sites than between them. A Bayesian approach to source-tracking was used to …

Phenotypic Plasticity Of Rattlesnake Trophic Morphology, Matthew Thomas Smith Dec 2012

Phenotypic Plasticity Of Rattlesnake Trophic Morphology, Matthew Thomas Smith

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The trophic morphology of gape-limited predators constrains the shape and size of prey items they can ingest. Trophic morphology consists of any morphological feature that is involved in the handling and ingestion of food. Diet has a profound effect on the morphology of many gape-limited predators. Identifying how prey type and resource level affect the morphology of different populations is an essential step in understanding the mechanisms contributing to patterns of morphological diversity. Species interactions (Chapter 1) induce plasticity in morphology that can lead to increased fitness, morphological divergence, and eventually speciation.

In Chapter 2, a laboratory study tested the …

Family Policies And Institutional Satisfaction: An Intersectional Analysis Of Tenure-Track Faculty, Heather Lee Schneller

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gender and faculty career advancement have been examined with a focus on academic work environment, including faculty workloads, mentoring relationships, access to research networks, and work-life balance. Previous studies concerned with gender, employment, and care work only have considered child care. Additionally, the exploration of faculty and care work focused specifically on gender instead of examining the interaction of race and gender. To date, no study on academic work-life policies includes faculty perceptions of their importance and effectiveness nor has the faculty assessment of eldercare policy been examined in relation to career success.

Guided by an intersectional perspective, this study …

Pulse Sharpening Effects Of Thin Film Ferroelectric Transmission Lines, Robert J. Sleezer Dec 2012

Pulse Sharpening Effects Of Thin Film Ferroelectric Transmission Lines, Robert J. Sleezer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Advances in material science have resulted in the development of electrically nonlinear high dielectric thin film ferroelectrics, which have led to new opportunities for the creation of novel devices. This dissertation investigated one such device: a low voltage nonlinear transmission line (NLTL). A finite element simulation of ferroelectric transmission lines showed that NLTLs are capable of creating shockwaves. Additionally, if the losses are kept sufficiently low, it was shown that voltage gain should be possible. Furthermore, a method of accounting for material dispersion was developed. Results from simulations including material dispersion showed that temporal solitons might be possible from a …

TiAlN films were deposited on glass substrates by AC magnetron sputtering at 2 kW with constant Argon and Nitrogen gas flow rates to study the effects of positioning on the deposited films. The deposition system used was an ICM-10 IsoFlux cylindrical magnetron sputtering chamber. The samples were placed in different positions and tilts with respect to the location of the Titanium and Aluminum targets in the chamber. It was found that with change in position and application of tilts, deposited films acquired different physical and chemical properties. It is believed that the differences in these properties were caused by to …

Stratigraphic Variations In The Carboniferous Section Across The Arkansas-Oklahoma State Line Arch, Tyler Dean Engelhardt Dec 2012

Stratigraphic Variations In The Carboniferous Section Across The Arkansas-Oklahoma State Line Arch, Tyler Dean Engelhardt

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The State Line Arch is represented by a structural high that trends through the study area in a loose alignment with the Arkansas-Oklahoma state line. Evidence of the arch extending further to the north includes a structural high and stratigraphic variation at an outcrop on Highway 59 near Evansville Mountain in Crawford County, Arkansas. The exact timing of the formation of the arch remains undetermined, but upper Devonian thinning at the top of the arch indicates the structure is pre-Mississippian. The reason for the development of the arch is poorly understood, but evidence linking Mississippian-aged Waulsortian mounds to Precambrian Spavinaw …

Investigating The Sensitivity Of Goodness-Of-Fit Indices To Detect Measurement Invariance In The Bifactor Model, Jam Khojasteh Dec 2012

Investigating The Sensitivity Of Goodness-Of-Fit Indices To Detect Measurement Invariance In The Bifactor Model, Jam Khojasteh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A Monte Carlo simulation study was conducted to evaluate the sensitivities of five commonly used goodness-of-fit indices to detect metric invariance properties of the bifactor model. The fit indices that performed the best in terms of power were Gamma and Mc. In addition, Gamma, Mc, CFI, and RMSEA all held Type I error to a minimum. However, only Gamma and CFI are recommended to use in the bifactor model because the other GOF indices have cutoff values that are too large. For Gamma and CFI values of -.026 to -.045 and -.004 to -.009, respectively indicate a lack of metric …
