Life History Variation Of Common Terns In The Gulf Of Maine, Jeffery Bryant Kimmons Dec 2012

Life History Variation Of Common Terns In The Gulf Of Maine, Jeffery Bryant Kimmons

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Life history is the inheritable rules that determine energy and time allocation towards different competing functions in the energy budget of an organism. Reproductive effort varies as organisms make reproductive decisions based on available energy. Factors influencing life histories are those that change energy and time budgets such as diet, competition, and environmental conditions.

Common tern (Sterna hirundo) life history phenotypes vary between islands in the Gulf of Maine. Common terns on offshore islands (>10km from mainland) and nearshore islands (5 to 10km from mainland) lay smaller clutches, hatching chicks with slower growth rates than common terns …

Study Of Current Optocoupler Techniques And Applications For Isolation Of Sensing And Control Signals In Dc-Dc Converters, Jake Williams

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a need for power switches that can operate at high voltage, high temperature, and high switching frequencies with low losses. Power switches fabricated from wide bandgap materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) or gallium nitride (GaN) can outperform conventional silicon switches due to material property advantages. Another common problem in grid-connected applications is the need for high voltage-isolation of gate drivers and control circuitry while operating efficiently at the high switching frequencies, high power density, and high temperatures made possible by wide bandgap devices. Transformers cannot operate at the temperatures of these wide bandgap devices and a new …

Effects Of Associated Subcortical Beetles On Oviposition Behavior And Early-Stage Survival Of Sirex Nigricornis F. (Hymenoptera: Siricidae), Ace J. Lynn-Miller

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sirex (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) woodwasps develop within xylem of host conifers. Sirex females drill through the bark, phloem and into xylem tissues where they deposit eggs along with a symbiotic Amylostereum fungus. The presence of Amylostereum is necessary for successful development of Sirex immatures as the larvae are unable to derive adequate nutrition from xylem in the absence of the fungus. The Eurasian woodwasp, Sirex noctilio F., was discovered in northeastern North America in 2004. Sirex noctilio has caused significant economic damage in Pinus radiata D. Don plantations of the southern hemisphere, but is of little economic significance in its native …

Design And Analysis Of An Adaptive Asynchronous System Architecture For Energy Efficiency, Brent Michael Hollosi Dec 2012

Design And Analysis Of An Adaptive Asynchronous System Architecture For Energy Efficiency, Brent Michael Hollosi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Power has become a critical design parameter for digital CMOS integrated circuits. With performance still garnering much concern, a central idea has emerged: minimizing power consumption while maintaining performance. The use of dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) with parallelism has shown to be an effective way of saving power while maintaining performance. However, the potency of DVS and parallelism in traditional, clocked synchronous systems is limited because of the strict timing requirements such systems must comply with. Delay-insensitive (DI) asynchronous systems have the potential to benefit more from these techniques due to their flexible timing requirements and high modularity. This dissertation …

The Role Of Saturated Fatty Acids In Connexin Expression On Endothelial Cells And Eosinophils, Kurt Anthony Ashack Dec 2012

The Role Of Saturated Fatty Acids In Connexin Expression On Endothelial Cells And Eosinophils, Kurt Anthony Ashack

Masters Theses

Eotaxin is a potent chemoattractant for eosinophils that becomes elevated in the tissues in response to inflammation and increased adiposity. Therefore, eosinophil migration into adipose tissue should increase in diet-induced obese individuals, yet it does not. This suggested to us that something within the cellular microenvironment of diet-induced obese individuals might be altering the endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecules (ELAM) such as VCAM-1 or selectins on the endothelial cells, thus preventing eosinophils from entering the inflamed tissue. Connexons are gap junctions in endothelial cells and on immune cells such as macrophages that are composed of connexins and have been shown to …

Md Mouse: Integrated Blood Pressure Device, Anand Shah, Jamila Mckenzie, Rex Weinstein, Noelle Nelson, Clayton Goertemiller

Intersections Fall 2020

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a public health concern due to both its pervasiveness and the significant risk of disability, stroke, or heart attack that can occur years after high blood pressure is detected. Furthermore, new pandemic statistics suggest that patients with hypertension experience greater health consequences of COVID-19, indicating that the condition is more circumstantially deadly. Occasional visits to a doctor's office, the most common method to measure blood pressure, only provide a snapshot of a person's blood pressure and are not an accurate characterization. This is because blood pressure can fluctuate based on daily changes to the …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding the role of competition in the organization of communities is limited in part by the difficulty of extrapolating the outcomes of small-scale experiments to how such outcomes might affect the distribution and abundance of species. We modeled the community-level outcomes of competition, using experimentally derived competitive effects and responses between an exotic invasive plant, Centaurea stoebe, and species from both its native and nonnative ranges and using changes in these effects and responses elicited by experimentally establishing symbioses between C. stoebe and fungal endophytes. Using relative interaction intensities (RIIs) and holding other life-history factors constant, individual-based and spatially explicit …

Competition theory predicts that local communities should consist of species that are more dissimilar than expected by chance. We find a strikingly different pattern in a multicontinent data set (55 presence-absence matrices from 24 locations) on the composition of mixed-species bird flocks, which are important sub-units of local bird communities the world over. By using null models and randomization tests followed by meta-analysis, we find the association strengths of species in flocks to be strongly related to similarity in body size and foraging behavior and higher for congeneric compared with noncongeneric species pairs. Given the local spatial scales of our …

The photophysical properties of the canonical DNA/RNA nucleobases can be modified by selective functionalization. The carbonyl functional group at the C6 position of guanine or 2-amino-6-oxopurine, for example, can be removed to form 2-aminopurine, thus replacing the ultrafast internal conversion pathway to the ground state observed in guanine with slow internal conversion and intersystem crossing pathways in 2-aminopurine.1 Similarly, substitution of the carbonyl oxygen in guanine with a heavier atom results in a redshift of the absorption spectrum and a remarkable modulation of the electronic relaxation pathways of the DNA nucleobase. More specifically, sulfur substitution redshifts the absorption spectrum of …
