In A Garden Of Lions: A Creative Rendering Inspired By The Three Metamorphoses Of Friedrich Nietzsche, Olivia L. Spence Dec 2012

In A Garden Of Lions: A Creative Rendering Inspired By The Three Metamorphoses Of Friedrich Nietzsche, Olivia L. Spence

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

A decade ago, during the summer of 2002, I read Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It made an indelible mark: even the colors and smells of that roof-top porch in Toronto where I read it all the way through still arise in the forefront of my mind every time I think of this text. Since then, I have been captivated with the writings and philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, and have sought to understand this interest whenever possible. It is with this introspective eye that I have engaged this thesis project, using the last section of his text as a jumping …

Quintessence Of Dust: Cognitive Neuroscience And An Actor's Process, Jason Christopher Davis Dec 2012

Quintessence Of Dust: Cognitive Neuroscience And An Actor's Process, Jason Christopher Davis

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines theories provided by cognitive neuroscience and applies them to an actor’s process. In particular, this research addresses the subjectivity and intentionality of our consciousness and special as-if states of consciousness, supported by the work of John Searle and Antonio Damasio. The phenomenal feeling of character-model control is discussed and supported by the work of Thomas Metzinger. The paper also considers our relative understanding of mirror neurons and specifically their function in relation to intersubjectivity and their use for an actor’s creation and conveyance of character in rehearsal and performance. It examines Stanislavsky’s notion of emotional memory and …

Rapid Evolution Of Northeastern Coyotes, Javier Monzon Dec 2012

Rapid Evolution Of Northeastern Coyotes, Javier Monzon

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The potential for rapid adaptive evolution is a subject of great interest in evolutionary biology. I took a population genomics approach to study the contemporary evolution of northeastern coyotes (Canis latrans) via hybridization and ecological specialization. I genotyped 96 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a broad geographic sample of 427 northeastern coyotes. First, I examined the prevalence, spatial distribution, and ecology of admixture. I found that northeastern coyotes form an extensive hybrid swarm with individuals being highly admixed with wolves (C. lupus) and dogs (C. familiaris). Coyotes in areas of high deer density are genetically more wolf-like, suggesting that natural …

The Pedagogy Of Wisdom - An Interpretation Of Plato's Theaetetus, Gregory Kirk Dec 2012

The Pedagogy Of Wisdom - An Interpretation Of Plato's Theaetetus, Gregory Kirk

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation is an interpretation of Plato's Theaetetus. The Theaetetus is typically taken as the first work of epistemology, in which Socrates and Theaetetus fail to find satisfactory any of the three proposed definitions of knowledge - that it is perception, that it is true opinion and that it is true opinion with an account. I argue that the discussion of these claims is in aid of demonstrating Socrates' pedagogy, and that the examination of his method of questioning Theaetetus causes to emerge a reading of the text placing primary emphasis on the presentation of his activity as a midwife …

Luck, And Other Disasters, Genevieve Crane Dec 2012

Luck, And Other Disasters, Genevieve Crane

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This is a collection of stories loosely centered around loss of control. Some of the narrators suffer psychological breakdowns, such as eating disorders and schizophrenia, while others suffer from external forces. The loose theme is intentional, for the sake of experimentation with a variety of voices and circumstances. Some of these characters scrape against the edge of the revelation that there is logic in their chaos. Others miss the epiphany entirely. All of the characters in these stories speak in dash format and there are no quotation marks used to indicate when someone is speaking. This decision was made because …

Struggling with the suicide of his first love, Tracy Cameron, and the betrayal of his best friend, Barry Cameron, Tim blames a childhood curse for all his misfortune. After putting Barry in …

The Paradise Within Thee: The Undying Promise Of Transcendence In Paradise Lost, Thomas Christopher Mistler Dec 2012

The Paradise Within Thee: The Undying Promise Of Transcendence In Paradise Lost, Thomas Christopher Mistler

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

John Milton's Paradise Lost in its simplest sense is a poem about disobedience, loss, and sin. Borrowing much of its inspiration and material from the Book of Genesis, the great English epic tells of the Fall of Man, or the choice of Adam and Eve to disobey God by eating the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge. The consequences of this action are, according to Milton and Christian tradition, tremendous. The very first lines of Paradise Lost emphasize this point, telling how "Man's first disobedience" brought "death into the world and all our [humanity's] woe" (I.1, 3). In my …

Anonymity And Ambiguity In Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology: Discerning The Fundamental Structure Of Incompleteness In Perceptual And Intersubjective Life, Whitney Howell Dec 2012

Anonymity And Ambiguity In Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology: Discerning The Fundamental Structure Of Incompleteness In Perceptual And Intersubjective Life, Whitney Howell

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This work explicates what I identify as the fundamental structure of incompleteness that characterizes the human experience of meaning and that, I argue, informs an ethical imperative in our relations with others. Drawing on the work of Edmund Husserl and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, I begin by showing how we overlook this incompleteness in perception. I argue that our experience of perceptual meaning almost always excludes its essential indeterminacy: that is, we experience meaning as coherent and complete, even though it is necessarily limited by our spatial and temporal situation. I show how what Merleau-Ponty refers to as the "anonymous" body--that which …

Crystallization Kinetics And Crystal Morphology Of Ultrathin Polycaprolactone Films Directed By Supercritical Carbon Dioxide., Mani Kuntal Sen Dec 2012

Crystallization Kinetics And Crystal Morphology Of Ultrathin Polycaprolactone Films Directed By Supercritical Carbon Dioxide., Mani Kuntal Sen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The effects of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as an effective plasticization agent on the crystallization kinetics and crystal morphology of ultrathin polycaprolactone (PCL) films (less than 100nm in thickness) were studied by using various techniques including optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and x-ray scattering experiments. As a result, it is found that the PCL chains form " flat-on" lamellae, where the lamellar layers run parallel to the substrate surface, irrespective of the CO2 process conditions and the film thickness. It was also found that the unique scCO2 conditions near the critical point (critical temperature (Tc) =31.3°C and critical pressure (PC) …

On The Social Construction Of Hellenism Cold War Narratives Of Modernity, Development And Democracy For Greece, Despina Lalaki Dec 2012

On The Social Construction Of Hellenism Cold War Narratives Of Modernity, Development And Democracy For Greece, Despina Lalaki

Publications and Research

Hellenism is one of those overarching, ever-changing narratives always subject to historical circumstances, intellectual fashions and political needs. Conversely, it is fraught with meaning and conditioning powers, enabling and constraining imagination and practical life. In this essay I tease out the hold that the idea of Hellas has had on post-war Greece and I explore the ways in which the American anti-communist rhetoric and discussions about political and economic stabilization appropriated and rearticulated Hellenism. Central to this history of transformations are the archaeologists; the archaeologists as intellectuals, as producers of culture who, while stepping in and out of their disciplinary …

Characterization Of Fhua 104/149c: A Double Cysteine Fhua Mutant With Normal Binding And Diminished Transport, Ada K. Hagan Dec 2012

Characterization Of Fhua 104/149c: A Double Cysteine Fhua Mutant With Normal Binding And Diminished Transport, Ada K. Hagan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Iron is an essential element for most bacteria and is commonly acquired by siderophores, molecules secreted under iron restricted environment to bind ferric iron. Gram negative cells actively uptake these complexes via outer membrane-transport proteins such as FhuA in Escherichia coli. Structural analysis of receptors revealed a conserved β-barrel occluded by an N-terminal plug domain. The cell membrane TonB/ExbB/ExbD complex presumably supplies energy via interaction between the FhuA N-terminal TonB box and the C-terminal domain of TonB. In order to better understand the mechanism of action the FhuA mutant 104/149C, tethering the central β-strands 4 and 6 of the …

Expectations And Experiences Of Fathers Who Have Parented Children With And Without Intellectual Disabilities, Jane Christina Kusmik Walker Dec 2012

Expectations And Experiences Of Fathers Who Have Parented Children With And Without Intellectual Disabilities, Jane Christina Kusmik Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The parenting experience is as diverse as the children parented. Each child has diverse personality traits requiring flexibility and specificity in parenting strategy. This need for flexibility and specificity is more complex when one or more children within a family has an intellectual disability. Although research in this area is abundant, investigators have historically focused on mothers' attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to represent the entire family (Essex, Seltzer, & Krauss, 2001; Greenberg, 2002) rather than focusing on fathers and their caregiving relationships with their children in need of malleable but consistent parenting. Using a qualitative descriptive design, this qualitative study …

Early Forest Fire Detection Using Texture, Blob Threshold, And Motion Analysis Of Principal Components, Georges Fouad Moussa

Master's Theses

Forest fires constantly threaten ecological systems, infrastructure and human lives. The purpose behind this study is minimizing the devastating damage caused by forest fires. Since it is impossible to completely avoid their occurrences, it is essential to accomplish a fast and appropriate intervention to minimize their destructive consequences. The most traditional method for detecting forest fires is human based surveillance through lookout towers. However, this study presents a more modern technique. It utilizes land-based real-time multispectral video processing to identify and determine the possibility of fire occurring within the camera’s field of view. The temporal, spectral, and spatial signatures of …

Laboratory Investigation Of The Effects Of Temperature And Moisture On Interface Shear Strength Of Textured Geomembrane And Geosynthetic Clay Liner, Taki Stavros Chrysovergis

Master's Theses

A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the effects of temperature and moisture on the shear strength of textured geomembrane (T-GM) and geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) interface. Several landfill slope failures involving geosynthetics have occurred within the past three decades. Interface shear strength of T-GM/GCL is well documented for testing conducted at laboratory temperatures and at moisture contents associated with GCLs in submerged conditions. However, in-service conditions for landfill liner systems include a wide range of temperatures (extending from below 0 °C to above 40 °C) and a wide range of moisture conditions. Large-scale interface direct shear tests were performed …

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the communication between sending court and community schools of a County Office of Education’s (COE) Alternative Education program and the receiving juvenile detention facility of a county in a Western state and how the communication between the two facilities affected the level of special education services provided to incarcerated youth, specifically the occurrence of 30-day placement IEPs. The juvenile detention facility was selected as a site because it was a lighthouse program, one of the few chosen to pilot the juvenile detention alternatives initiative (JDAI). JDAI sought to lower the number of incarcerated youth through viable alternatives …

On Mormon Laughter, Shawn R. Tucker Dec 2012

On Mormon Laughter, Shawn R. Tucker

BYU Studies

Shawn Tucker, an associate professor of fine arts, offers an interpretation on the scriptural injunctions against excessive and loud laughter found in Latter-day Saint scripture. Having grown up in a home with lots of joyous, good-natured laughter, the author recalls his confusion at such commands. His research explores the teachings of leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sociologists, and great thinkers such as C. S. Lewis.

The article shows that laughter that is cold, cynical, and belittling is a perversion of a God-given faculty that should delightfully lift and edify. A good sense of humor can …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Evidence suggests that selenium has cancer preventive properties that are largely mediated through selenoproteins. Our previous observations demonstrated that targeted down-regulation of the 15 kDa selenoprotein (Sep15) in murine colon cancer cells resulted in the reversal of the cancer phenotype. The present study investigated the effect of Sep15 knockout in mice using a chemically-induced colon cancer model. Homozygous Sep15 knockout mice, and wild type littermate controls were given four weekly subcutaneous injections of azoxymethane (10 mg/kg). Sep15 knockout mice developed significantly (pGBP-1 in humans has been associated with a highly significant, increased five-year survival rate in colorectal cancer patients. In …
