3d Reconstruction For Post-Disaster Analysis Of Civil Infrastructure, Joshua Caron
3d Reconstruction For Post-Disaster Analysis Of Civil Infrastructure, Joshua Caron
All Theses
Following a natural disaster, there is a need to rapidly assess the safety of civil infrastructure. This job is typically undertaken by local governments with the help of volunteer civil engineers with structural expertise, as well as organizations such as Cal EMA and ASCE. However, the inspection process is labor-intensive and a bit tedious, and results are prone to error as they tend to rely on the individual expertise of the inspectors. 3D reconstruction stands to become a useful tool in the safety evaluation process, as well as providing valuable opportunities for forensic engineering. This research explores the application of …

Best Practice In Early Reading Intervention: Implementing A Reading Intervention Program To Reach Below Level Readers, Bridgett Niedringhaus
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a reading intervention program used with second and third grade students identified as not meeting grade level expectancy. Studies have indicated students who are not reading at grade level by the end of the third grade have an increasingly difficult time achieving at the rate of their same-age peers. In this mixed-methods case study, the researcher analyzed end of the year report card data for 30 students who received reading intervention using the Rigby Intervention By Design Program, conducted a Content Knowledge Survey with teachers, and performed Literacy Walkthroughs …

From 5 April – 21 September 2012 we monitored the distribution, abundance and productivity of the federally Threatened Western Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus nivosus) along the Oregon coast. From north to south, we surveyed and monitored plover activity at Sutton Beach, Siltcoos River estuary, the Dunes Overlook, North Tahkenitch Creek, Tenmile Creek, Coos Bay North Spit, Bandon Snowy Plover Management Area, New River HRA and adjacent lands, and Floras Lake. Our objectives for the Oregon coastal population in 2012 were to: 1) estimate the size of the adult Snowy Plover population, 2) locate plover nests, 3) determine nest …
Can You Get Beliefs From Retweets? An Examination Of The Extended Parallel Processing Model On Social Media, Xialing Lin
Can You Get Beliefs From Retweets? An Examination Of The Extended Parallel Processing Model On Social Media, Xialing Lin
Masters Theses
The Extended Parallel Processing Model (EPPM; Witte, 1992) has been applied as a framework to examine risk information dissemination and effective sensation seeking in various health communication scenarios. Previous studies suggest that it is worth examining whether Twitter could have potential efficacy effects similar to face-to-face interaction or traditional media interventions. Given the overload and discrete information in the medium environment, people would adapt information processing short cuts, to tend to similar perceptions from various sources rather than reading specific messages.
The current study investigates the threat appeal perceptions of EPPM on system-generated and other-generated message cues in social media. …

Professional Conversations: Mentor Teachers’ Theories-In-Use Using The Australian National Professional Standards For Teachers, Simon N. Leonard
Professional Conversations: Mentor Teachers’ Theories-In-Use Using The Australian National Professional Standards For Teachers, Simon N. Leonard
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In this paper the written feedback provided by mentor teachers using a new assessment model for preservice teacher professional experience deployed in the Australian Capital Territory and based on the Australian National Standards for Teachers is analysed. The analysis reveals mentor teachers hold a pervasive theory-in-use in regards to the needs of beginning teachers that may restrict the developmental ambition of the assessment model. The restricted vision of what is important for beginning teachers held by mentor teachers is possibly a reaction to continual change within school education. The analysis is preceded by a description of the ‘Professional Conversations’ model …

2012 Poll Of Emerging Adults [Thriving, Struggling & Hopeful], Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, Joseph Schwab
The Clark University Poll (2012-2015)
Report for the 2012 Clark University Poll titled "Emerging Adults: Thriving, Struggling & Hopeful".
"A great deal of attention—most of it negative—is being paid to emerging adults (ages 18-29) in American society. We frequently hear that they are lazy, selfish, poorly educated, and both reluctant and ill-equipped to take on the responsibilities of adult life. We are told that they are, essentially, doomed: They are sure to have a less prosperous and enjoyable life than their parents did, given the depths of the 2008 recession that occurred just as they were trying to enter the job market and build a …

Central Business Districts And Transit Ridership: A Reexamination Of The Relationship In The United States, Jeffrey R. Brown, Dristi Neog
Central Business Districts And Transit Ridership: A Reexamination Of The Relationship In The United States, Jeffrey R. Brown, Dristi Neog
Journal of Public Transportation
Many scholars claim that public transit’s long-term ridership decline can be attributed to the decentralization of U.S. metropolitan areas and the decline of the central business district (CBD) as their primary economic engine. However, recent research has begun to challenge this view and has prompted this reexamination. Using multivariate analysis, we examine the relationship between the strength of the CBD and transit ridership in all U.S. metropolitan areas with more than 500,000 persons in 2000, while controlling for other factors thought to influence bus and rail transit ridership. We find no relationship between the strength of the CBD and transit …

Transit Operator Evaluation Of Three Wheelchair Securement Systems In A Large Accessible Transit Vehicle, Linda Van Roosmalen, Douglas Hobson, Patricia Karg, Emily Deleo, Erik Porach
Journal of Public Transportation
The safety, ease of use, and independent use of three wheelchair securement systems and three different types of wheeled mobility devices (WhMD), including a manual wheelchair, a powered wheelchair, and a three-wheeled scooter, were evaluated by eight vehicle operators of a large accessible public transit vehicle (LATV). The securement systems included a forward-facing four-point tiedown system, a prototype forward-facing autodocking system, and a prototype rear-facing-wheelchair passenger (RF-WP) system. The eight LATV operators transported wheelchair-seated passengers in each wheelchair securement system, after which they completed a questionnaire. Operators responded generally positively to the autodocking and RF-WP systems because they were observed …

Simulated Analysis Of Exclusive Bus Lanes On Expressways: Case Study In Beijing, China, Lin Zhu, Lei Yu, Xu-Mei Chen, Ji-Fu Guo
Journal of Public Transportation
Deploying exclusive bus lanes is considered an important strategy for supporting public transit priority policy. This paper uses a simulation approach to evaluate planned exclusive bus lanes on expressways in Beijing, China. Two scenarios for deploying exclusive bus lanes—a curbside bus lane scenario and a median bus lane scenario—were designed. Then, a micro-simulation network platform using VISSIM was established and calibrated, with all relative errors between the simulated timevarying speeds and the field speeds less than 15 percent. Afterwards, the two bus lane scenarios were simulated, evaluated, and subsequently compared with current traffic conditions without bus lanes. It was found …

Extracellular Matrix And Fibroblast Communication Following Myocardial Infarction, Yonggang Ma, Ganesh V. Halade, Merry L. Lindsey
Extracellular Matrix And Fibroblast Communication Following Myocardial Infarction, Yonggang Ma, Ganesh V. Halade, Merry L. Lindsey
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides structural support by serving as a scaffold for cells, and as such the ECM maintains normal tissue homeostasis and mediates the repair response following injury. In response to myocardial infarction (MI), ECM expression is generally upregulated in the left ventricle (LV), which regulates LV remodeling by modulating scar formation. The ECM directly affects scar formation by regulating growth factor release and cell adhesion and indirectly affects scar formation by regulating the inflammatory, angiogenic, and fibroblast responses. This review summarizes the current literature on ECM expression patterns and fibroblast mechanisms in the myocardium, focusing on the …

Self-Reporting, Recognition Of Symptoms And Characteristics Of Anxiety And Depression And Seeking Professional Help, Eliana V. Brito
Graduate Theses
This study examined whether adults (age 25 to 50) self-report symptoms of anxiety and/or depression and whether these individuals accurately identify the symptoms that are associated with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. Do these individuals believe the symptoms associated with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder are severe enough to seek professional help? The participants included 30 females and 20 males. Zung’s Self-Rating Depression (SDS; 1971) and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS; 1965) were administered. A third questionnaire was also developed to help identify if individuals are able to accurately identify symptoms, distinguish between the two disorders, and …
