Incorporating Nanomaterials With Mems Devices., Evgeniya V. Moiseeva 1980- Dec 2012

Incorporating Nanomaterials With Mems Devices., Evgeniya V. Moiseeva 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates an elegant method, known as 'micro-origami' or strain architecture to design and fabricate three-dimensional MEMS structures which are assembled using actuation of a metal-oxide bilayer with conventional planar lithography. Folding allows creating complex, robust, three-dimensional shapes from two-dimensional material simply by choosing folds in the right order and orientation, small disturbances of the initial shape may also be used to produce different final shapes. These are referred to as "pop-up structures" in this work. The scope of this work presented the deposition of colloidal gold nanoparticles (GNPs) into conformal thin films using a microstenciling technique. Results illustrated …

Resourceful Financing By New Firms : The Use Of Multiple Credit Sources, John M. Mueller Dec 2012

Resourceful Financing By New Firms : The Use Of Multiple Credit Sources, John M. Mueller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

New firms face financial constraints that could hinder firm performance. Yet founders exhibit persistence and resourcefulness in building their new ventures and finding solutions to their financial constraints. The use of financial theories that focus on financing costs, profit maximization, and valuation of firms draws attention to the question of whether entrepreneurs increase survival and growth prospects for their firms through resourcefulness in financing (e.g. using multiple credit sources) or instead make suboptimal financing decisions (i.e. when being resourceful in their financing) that actually decrease the probability of new venture survival and high growth rates. My dissertation examines if being …

Acetaldehyde Dehydrogenase 2 (Aldh2) Activation Protects Hepatocytes From Mitochondrial Damage And Death Caused By 4-Hydroxynonenal., Keegan J. Baldauf 1982- Dec 2012

Acetaldehyde Dehydrogenase 2 (Aldh2) Activation Protects Hepatocytes From Mitochondrial Damage And Death Caused By 4-Hydroxynonenal., Keegan J. Baldauf 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) ranks among the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the world and effects millions of patients each year. Progression of ALD is well characterized and is actually a spectrum of liver diseases, which progresses from steatosis, to inflammation and necrosis, to finally fibrosis and cirrhosis. However, the underlying mechanism(s) of ALD are not as well understood, and as a result there is no FDA-approved therapy to prevent or reverse the disease. With a better understanding of the mechanism(s) and risk factors that mediate the initiation and progression of ALD, a targeted therapy can be developed …

Ecological Interactions Affecting The Role Of Mosquito Larvae On Dengue Virus Transmission., Jeffrey J. Bara 1984- Dec 2012

Ecological Interactions Affecting The Role Of Mosquito Larvae On Dengue Virus Transmission., Jeffrey J. Bara 1984-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the course of their life cycle, mosquitoes undergo an ontogenetic niche shift; immature larval development occurs within an aquatic habitat from which adult mosquitoes subsequently disperse into the terrestrial environment. While adult female mosquitoes transmit dengue to humans, the larval stage influences dengue virus transmission significantly in several ways. The biotic and abiotic conditions in which larvae develop influence epidemiologically important aspects of adult life history and influence the geographic distribution of mosquito species. Through vertical transmission, mosquitoes may serve as reservoir hosts for dengue during periods that are unfavorable for transmission to humans. For my dissertation, I conducted …

Combating The Sophomore Slump Through Peer-Mentoring Among African American Students At Predominantly White Institutions., Tiffany Christina Evans Dec 2012

Combating The Sophomore Slump Through Peer-Mentoring Among African American Students At Predominantly White Institutions., Tiffany Christina Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a plethora of research regarding the first year undergraduate student experience; however, 2nd year students are facing adversity and consequently high rates of attrition. This phenomenon is known as the sophomore slump. There is limited research of how the sophomore slump impacts African Americans and research supports involvement, particularly as a peer mentor, increases student persistence beyond the 2nd year. This study uses Tinto's theory of student departure and Collin's theory of other-mothering to explore how the academic and social skills of CONECT peer mentors contribute to their experiences as peer mentors and their overall persistence.

Phenomenological Modeling Of Image Irradiance For Non-Lambertian Surfaces Under Natural Illumination., Shireen Y. Elhabian Dec 2012

Phenomenological Modeling Of Image Irradiance For Non-Lambertian Surfaces Under Natural Illumination., Shireen Y. Elhabian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various vision tasks are usually confronted by appearance variations due to changes of illumination. For instance, in a recognition system, it has been shown that the variability in human face appearance is owed to changes to lighting conditions rather than person's identity. Theoretically, due to the arbitrariness of the lighting function, the space of all possible images of a fixed-pose object under all possible illumination conditions is infinite dimensional. Nonetheless, it has been proven that the set of images of a convex Lambertian surface under distant illumination lies near a low dimensional linear subspace. This result was also extended to …

A Submodular Optimization Framework For Never-Ending Learning : Semi-Supervised, Online, And Active Learning., Wael Emara Dec 2012

A Submodular Optimization Framework For Never-Ending Learning : Semi-Supervised, Online, And Active Learning., Wael Emara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The revolution in information technology and the explosion in the use of computing devices in people's everyday activities has forever changed the perspective of the data mining and machine learning fields. The enormous amounts of easily accessible, information rich data is pushing the data analysis community in general towards a shift of paradigm. In the new paradigm, data comes in the form a stream of billions of records received everyday. The dynamic nature of the data and its sheer size makes it impossible to use the traditional notion of offline learning where the whole data is accessible at any time …

The Role Of Endogenous Bcl-Xl In Regulation Of Apoptotic Signaling Pathways., Colins Ogwandi Eno 1982- Dec 2012

The Role Of Endogenous Bcl-Xl In Regulation Of Apoptotic Signaling Pathways., Colins Ogwandi Eno 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bcl-2 proteins are major regulators of cellular responses to various apoptotic stimuli. Among them, overexpression of the anti-apoptotic BcI-2 protein BcI-xL modulates organelle-specific apoptotic pathways. To understand the mechanisms by which endogenous BcI-xL regulates apoptosis, mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) deficient in BcI-xL expression (Bcl-x-KO) was generated. Studies of BcI-xL exclusively targeted to an organelle in Bcl-x-KO MEFs indicate that the mitochondria- and ER-Iocalized BcI-xL play distinct roles in apoptosis resistance and Ca2+ homeostasis. Specifically, mitochondrial BcI-xL can regulate apoptosis independently of ER BcI-xL, and when localized exclusively at the ER, BcI-xL impinges on Ca2+ homeostasis but does not affect apoptosis …

The Use Of Mathematical And Computational Models To Define The Role Of Mutation And Infection In Colorectal Cancer., Chandler D. Gatenbee 1982- Dec 2012

The Use Of Mathematical And Computational Models To Define The Role Of Mutation And Infection In Colorectal Cancer., Chandler D. Gatenbee 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research over the past twenty five years has led to the development of the hypothesis that colorectal cancer is caused by the accumulation of mutations in tumor suppressor genes and proto-oncogenes. The last ten years has also revealed that the common JC Virus (JCV) is frequently found in colorectal tumors. This has led to the hypothesis that the virus, which is known to cause tumors in the lab, may playa role in colorectal cancer. However, the presence of JCV in colorectal tumors does not necessarily indicate a cause-effect relationship. Unlike in vivo and in vitro studies, mathematical and computational modeling …

The Art Of Natality : Virginia Woolf's And Kathe Kollwitz's Aesthetics Of Becoming., Jennifer Brooke Goldberg 1973- Dec 2012

The Art Of Natality : Virginia Woolf's And Kathe Kollwitz's Aesthetics Of Becoming., Jennifer Brooke Goldberg 1973-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Though Virginia Woolf’s and Kathe Kollwitz's personal histories and specific cultural circumstances were quite different, their aesthetics share fundamental qualities. This dissertation demonstrates that both artists affirm memory, the maternal, and creativity as coalescent, and through doing so assert a principle of connectivity that counters the turmoil of their times. Through this constellation, Woolf’s and Kollwitz's aesthetics exude faith in the continued viability of beauty and of possibility, faith that a commitment to becoming will undermine the sources of hopelessness that enshroud the modem world. Channeling their losses into their creative endeavors, Woolf and Kollwitz appropriated crises from their pasts …

Factors Affecting Speech Intelligibility Improvement With Exposure To Reverberant Room Listening Environments., Eugene Brandewie Dec 2012

Factors Affecting Speech Intelligibility Improvement With Exposure To Reverberant Room Listening Environments., Eugene Brandewie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Speech intelligibility has been found to improve with prior exposure to a reverberant room environment. It is believed that perceptual mechanisms help maintain accurate speech perception under these adverse conditions. Potential factors underlying this speech enhancement effect were examined in three experiments. Experiment 1 studied the time course of speech intelligibility enhancement in multiple room environments. Carrier phrases of varying lengths were used to measure changes in speech intelligibility over time. Results showed an effect of speech enhancement with a time course that varied with the signal-to-noise ratio between the speech and a broad-band noise masker. Additionally, greater speech enhancement …

The Dynamic Equilibrium Of Human Telomeric G-Quadruplexes., Robert Buscaglia Dec 2012

The Dynamic Equilibrium Of Human Telomeric G-Quadruplexes., Robert Buscaglia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

G-quadruplexes are thought to have biological importance, with studies based on small molecule interactions and quadruplex-interactive antibodies demonstrating their potential for formation in vivo. One potential biological function of quadruplex structures is the regulation and maintenance of telomeres. Telomeres are nucleoprotein complexes involved in chromosome stability. Human telomeres are composed of the repeated DNA sequence, 5'- d(TIAGGG), that terminates in a 3' single-stranded overhang. DNA sequences with homology to the human telomere are capable of quadruplex formation in vitro. Specifically, sequences containing four-guanine stretches (e.g. 5'-d(AGGG(TIAGGGb)) are capable of forming at least five distinct unimolecular structures. Which structure is favored …

Connected Matchings In Special Families Of Graphs., Christopher James Caragianis 1980- Dec 2012

Connected Matchings In Special Families Of Graphs., Christopher James Caragianis 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A connected matching in a graph is a set of disjoint edges such that, for any pair of these edges, there is another edge of the graph incident to both of them. This dissertation investigates two problems related to finding large connected matchings in graphs. The first problem is motivated by a famous and still open conjecture made by Hadwiger stating that every k-chromatic graph contains a minor of the complete graph Kk . If true, Hadwiger's conjecture would imply that every graph G has a minor of the complete graph K n/a(C), where a(G) denotes the independence number of …

Ridge Preservation Comparing The Clinical And Histologic Healing Of An Intrasocket Allograft Vs. A Facial Overlay Xenograft Using A Bioresorbable Barrier Membrane., Evmenios Poulias Dec 2012

Ridge Preservation Comparing The Clinical And Histologic Healing Of An Intrasocket Allograft Vs. A Facial Overlay Xenograft Using A Bioresorbable Barrier Membrane., Evmenios Poulias

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aim. The efficacy of ridge preservation procedures using grafting materials and barrier membranes has been well established in the literature. However, the loss of horizontal width even with the utilization of intrasocket only guided bone regeneration procedures can lead to loss of soft and hard tissue contour or even compromise implant placement. The primary aim of this study was to compare ridge preservation using an intrasocket mineralized particulate cancellous allograft to an intrasocket mineralized particulate cancellous allograft plus a facial overlay with a particulate bovine xenograft, both covered with a bioresorbable barrier membrane. Clinical and histologic data was used to …

The Ilkhanid Mongols, The Christian Armenians, And The Islamic Mamluks : A Study Of Their Relations, 1220-1335., Lauren Prezbindowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work seeks to fill a gap in the academic literature concerning the study of the Ilkhanid Mongols of the Middle East during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries CE using Armenian, Persian, Arabic, and Syriac primary sources in English translation. This study will analyze the triangular relationship among the Ilkhanid Mongols, the Kingdom of Cilician Armenia and Greater Armenia, and the Egyptian Mamluks to discern the Ilkhanate's impact in the Middle East. Although the Armenians became subjects of the Mongols, they did not gain many benefits from this partnership. In fact, their relationship proved to be overwhelmingly negative. Although the …

Iron Acquisition By The Dental Pathogen Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans., Porscha Larai Jefferson 1986- Dec 2012

Iron Acquisition By The Dental Pathogen Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans., Porscha Larai Jefferson 1986-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dental pathogen A. actinomycetemcomitans, a Gram- negative organism, has been associated with aggressive forms of periodontitis. A. actinomycetemcomitans requires iron to grow. In the host, iron-binding proteins such as transferrin, lactoferrin, hemoglobin, and ferritin, maintain a low free-iron concentration. Microorganisms, however, have evolved complex systems to efficiently harvest iron. The iron acquisition systems encoded in the genome of A. actinomycetemcomitans are likely tailored towards the specific survival strategies needed to survive in the oral biofilm. The objectives of this project were to determine the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans in different iron sources and to examine the expression of the …

Gain And Loss Of Functional Locomotor Recovery Following Contusive Spinal Cord Injury In The Adult Rat., Krista Layne Caudle Dec 2012

Gain And Loss Of Functional Locomotor Recovery Following Contusive Spinal Cord Injury In The Adult Rat., Krista Layne Caudle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Activity-based rehabilitation in the form of overground or body weight-supported treadmill (BWST) locomotor step training has become the most widely accepted therapy translated from preclinical animal research to spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. However, locomotor training does not provide the level of functional locomotor recovery that animal models are interpreted to promise because preclinical studies have used complete spinal cord transections that do not sufficiently mimic the clinical presentation. Furthermore, animal models do not include the same standard of care, immobilization with stretch/range-ofmotion manual therapies, SCI patients receive. Therefore, we have developed an experimental animal model that includes aspects of …

Morphological Comparison Of Visual Pathway Projections To The Temporal Lobe From Cortical Area Vi And The Tectorecipient Zone Of The Pulvinar Nucleus In The Tree Shrew (Tupaia Belangeri)., Donna Dillihay Dec 2012

Morphological Comparison Of Visual Pathway Projections To The Temporal Lobe From Cortical Area Vi And The Tectorecipient Zone Of The Pulvinar Nucleus In The Tree Shrew (Tupaia Belangeri)., Donna Dillihay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The secondary visual pathway, from the retina through the superior colliculus and pulvinar nucleus has been linked to spatial attention (Snow et aI., 2009; Arend et aI., 2008) movement planning and motor response to visual stimuli (Wilke et aI. 2010; Grieve et aI. 2000). The tree shrew temporal cortex receives input from the tecto-recipient pulvinar nucleus, composed of the dorsal (PD) and central (PC) subdivisions (Lyon et al. 2003a). We looked at the projections from this pathway to the temporal cortex and compared them to the VI projections to the temporal cortex in the tree shrew. Our focus was to …

Studies In The Image Of The Madonna Lactans In Late Medieval And Renaissance Italy., Cecelia M. Dorger Dec 2012

Studies In The Image Of The Madonna Lactans In Late Medieval And Renaissance Italy., Cecelia M. Dorger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an analysis of Italian late medieval and Renaissance peoples’ response to the Madonna lactans image. Although the images that comprise this type are similar in that Mary holds Christ at her breast, they vary widely in iconography and context. We shall use reception and response theory to determine how the image functioned for spectators. Determining how different groups responded to the motif is facilitated by applying an interpretive community model. Hence a group’s interpretive principles connect these communities and inform their reception of the image. We argue that although context and communities are diverse, most people believed …

This study explored the predictive relationships of teacher efficacy, teacher knowledge, and teacher practices with student achievement. More specifically, secondary mathematics teachers' efficacy beliefs, geometry knowledge for teaching, and the cognitive complexity of the teachers' classroom practices were examined for 72 teachers in both urban and rural districts across Kentucky, along with the student achievement data of their students. Teacher and student data were obtained from the NSF-funded Geometry Assessment for Secondary Teachers (GAST) project, which administered geometry teacher knowledge assessments at the beginning and end of the school year, and collected cognitive complexity data from lessons through three classroom …

A Study Of The Total Coloring Of Graphs., Maxfield Edwin Leidner Dec 2012

A Study Of The Total Coloring Of Graphs., Maxfield Edwin Leidner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The area of total coloring is a more recent and less studied area than vertex and edge coloring, but recently, some attention has been given to the Total Coloring Conjecture, which states that each graph's total chromatic number xT is no greater than its maximum degree plus two. In this dissertation, it is proved that the conjecture is satisfied by those planar graphs in which no vertex of degree 5 or 6 1ies on more than three 3-cycles. The total independence number aT is found for some families of graphs, and a relationship between that parameter and the size of …

Integrated Modeling And Analysis Methodologies For Architecture-Level Vehicle Design., Rostyslav Lesiv Dec 2012

Integrated Modeling And Analysis Methodologies For Architecture-Level Vehicle Design., Rostyslav Lesiv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to satisfy customer expectations, a ground vehicle must be designed to meet a broad range of performance requirements. A satisfactory vehicle design process implements a set of requirements reflecting necessary, but perhaps not sufficient conditions for assuring success in a highly competitive market. An optimal architecture-level vehicle design configuration is one of the most important of these requirements. A basic layout that is efficient and flexible permits significant reductions in the time needed to complete the product development cycle, with commensurate reductions in cost. Unfortunately, architecture-level design is the most abstract phase of the design process. The high-level …

The Effect Of Mortar Strength On The Standard Test For Strand Bond, Cameron Murray Dec 2012

The Effect Of Mortar Strength On The Standard Test For Strand Bond, Cameron Murray

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The prestressed industry is moving towards adopting the Standard Test for Strand Bond (STSB) to quantify the bond capacity of prestressing strand. In the test, strand is pulled through an 18 in. cylindrical casing filled with mortar. The force corresponding to the dead end displacement of 0.1 in. is recorded and this value is used to quantify strand bond. One of the concerns of the test is the requirement of a mean mortar strength of 4,500 to 5,000 psi during testing. There is concern that this 500 psi range may be too difficult to achieve. A study was conducted to …

Learning Visual Features For The Avatar Captcha Recognition Challenge, Mohammed Korayem, Abdallah A. Mohamed, David Crandall, Roman Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Captchas are frequently used on the modern world wide web to differentiate human users from automated bots by giving tests that are easy for humans to answer but difficult or impossible for algorithms. As artificial intelligence algorithms have improved, new types of Captchas have had to be developed. Recent work has proposed a new system called Avatar Captcha, in which a user is asked to distinguish between facial images of real humans and those of avatars generated by computer graphics. This novel system has been proposed on the assumption that this Captcha is very difficult for computers to break. In …
