Constitutionalism: East Asian Antecedents, Tom Ginsburg
Constitutionalism: East Asian Antecedents, Tom Ginsburg
Chicago-Kent Law Review
To what degree can traditional Asian political and legal institutions be seen as embodying constitutionalist values? This question has risen to the fore in recent decades as part of a new attention to constitutionalism around the world, as well as the decline in orientalist perceptions of Asia as a region of oppressive legal traditions. This article juxtaposes East Asian analogues or antecedents of constitutionalism with a particular set of recent theoretical understandings of the concept of constitutionalism. After conducting a historical review of political and legal institutions in China, Japan and Korea, the article argues that we can indeed speak …

The Nursing Standard Of Care In Illinois: Rethinking The Wingo Exception In The Wake Of Sullivan V. Edward Hospital, Emily Chase-Sosnoff
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This note analyzes the current circuit split among Illinois courts over whether the same-license requirement for medical expert testimony applies to testimony about the standard of care for nurse-doctor communications. Part I traces the history of the problem by explaining the original same-license requirement, the Wingo exception for nurse-doctor communications, and the Illinois Supreme Court's decision in Sullivan, which cast doubt on Wingo's continued survival. Part II illustrates the nature of the circuit split by describing the lower courts' three distinct interpretations of Sullivan. Finally, Part III argues that courts should apply Sullivan strictly and abandon the Wingo exception because …

In September 2012, Bridgewater Review Associate Editor Ellen Scheible visited Mr. Kingsley in his Maxwell Library office and asked him to reflect on the role of the university archivist and his experiences at Bridgewater State.
How And Why Do Dictatorships Survive? Lessons For The Middle East, Erica Frantz
How And Why Do Dictatorships Survive? Lessons For The Middle East, Erica Frantz
Bridgewater Review
Political events in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have dominated news headlines for the past two years. Since the revolution in Tunisia in December 2010, one dictatorship after the next has appeared on the verge of collapse, as citizens gather en masse to voice their demands for democratic governance. In countries such as Libya and Egypt, though relatively successful democratic elections were held following the collapse of long-standing dictatorships, it is uncertain whether the new political system being installed will be democratic or autocratic. When looking to the future of the region beyond the Arab Spring, one thing …

Tissue adhesives are increasingly gaining more popularity in various areas of biomedical applications. They are utilized as surgical adhesives, as a replacement or adjunct to conventional wound closure and bleeding control techniques such as suturing, as well as in other applications such as tissue engineering and drug delivery.Unfortunately, the existing surgical adhesives are not ideal for wet tissue adhesion required in many surgeries such as those for internal organs. Developing surgical adhesives with strong wet tissue adhesion, controlled degradability and mechanical properties, and excellent biocompatibility has been a significant challenge. Herein, learning from nature, we report a one-step synthesis of …

The Association Between Acrochorda (Skin Tags), Metabolic Syndrome, And Adenomatous Polyps, Brendan O'Hare, Md, Anastasia Shnitser, Md, Jason Korenblit, Md, Mba, Ali Siddiqui, Md
Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND
Acrochorda (skin tags) are benign skin tumors that form primarily at skin creases, generally on the neck, armpit, and groin areas. There have been a small number of published studies in 1980s in patients who were found to have increased number of skin tags and colonic polyps, with a direct correlation described between the two. In addition, metabolic syndrome has been linked to adenomatous polyps, but a link between skin tags and metabolic syndrome has not been established.

Pepsin And Salivary Amylase Biomarkers Of Microaspiration In Oral And Tracheal Secretions Of Intubated Patients, Aurea Middleton
Pepsin And Salivary Amylase Biomarkers Of Microaspiration In Oral And Tracheal Secretions Of Intubated Patients, Aurea Middleton
HIM 1990-2015
Introduction: The presence of an endotracheal tube (ETT) increases the risk for microaspiration of secretions around the ETT. Biomarkers of pepsin and salivary amylase may be used to identify microaspiration in intubated patients because of their naturally occurring presence in the stomach or oral cavity and non-occurrence in the respiratory tract. Microaspiration may be difficult to detect until pulmonary complications, such as lung injury or infection, occur. This study assessed the presence of pepsin and salivary amylase in oral and tracheal secretions of ventilated adults. Method(s): This is a secondary analysis of data collected from 11 critically ill, adult patients …
From The "War On Poverty" To Reagan's "New Right," What's In A Name? : The Symbolic Significance Of The "Welfare Queen" In Politics And Public Discourse., Kem Roper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a rhetorical analysis of the political discourse surrounding the role of poor African American women within the American social and political economy beginning in 1965 with Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty initiatives and extending to the early 1980s with Ronald Reagan and the "religious right." I argue that an ideology of whiteness permeates both the Johnson and Reagan administrations even though each worked towards different ends. In Chapter 1, I begin by discussing how America's establishment as a capitalist society made it a nation ill-fitted for government-funded social programs. In particular, I discuss the impact of distinctions …
Tobacco Dependence Treatment Education For Dental Students Using Standardized Patients., Jacqueline A. Singleton 1955-
Tobacco Dependence Treatment Education For Dental Students Using Standardized Patients., Jacqueline A. Singleton 1955-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dentists can play a key role in helping patients quit tobacco use by providing tobacco cessation treatment (TCT) in their practice. Although the majority of dentists receive training in TCT, most do not provide adequate intervention. Many feel they are not adequately trained. Using standardized patients (SPs) shows promise in TCT training by providing a simulated clinical environment for students to practice counseling skills with individuals trained to portray patients. Standardized patients evaluate students' skills and provide immediate feedback. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference in dental students' attitudes, perceived barriers, subjective norms, …

Hyperhomocysteinemia Alters Sinoatrial And Atrioventricular Nodal Function : Role Of The Cardiac Nmda Receptor., Chirag V. Soni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is a pathological condition characterized by excessive levels of plasma homocysteine (Hcy). Patients with HHcy are reported to be at risk for arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation and sudden cardiac death (SCD); however, the causative mechanisms remain unknown. The effects of HHcy on sinus node function, atrioventricular conduction and ventricular vulnerability were investigated by in vivo electrophysiological (EP) analysis, and the role of the cardiac N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDA-R) in promoting Hcy-induced conduction abnormalities was explored. Materials and Methods: Anesthetized wild-type control mice (WT), mice receiving Hcy in the drinking water for 12 weeks (DW), and heterozygous cystathionine-ß-synthase knockout …
Zooplankton In Freshwaters : Potential Responses To Global Warming, Nutrient Enrichment, And Exotic Jellyfish., Allison S. Smith
Zooplankton In Freshwaters : Potential Responses To Global Warming, Nutrient Enrichment, And Exotic Jellyfish., Allison S. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aquatic ecosystems face major transformations as humans increasingly alter their environment by introducing exotic species and changing the temperature regime and nutrient availability of freshwater systems. The impacts of such alterations of conditions, resources and species composition on zooplankton are important to consider because zooplankton link primary producers to higher trophic levels. Among recent exotic invaders of freshwater systems in Europe and the Western Hemisphere is Craspedacusta sowerbii. This freshwater cnidarian can impact zooplankton abundance and community composition, thus altering ecosystem energy transfer to higher trophic levels. In experiments described in chapters 2 and 3 of this dissertation, C. sowerbii …

This thesis is a study of my current body of work, both formally and conceptually. It begins with an Introduction, explaining the origin of the term hybrid and the distinct advantages as well as disadvantages hybridization has on a species. It also discusses the effects incurred by the environment on plants and humans. Chapter II, A Curious Collection of Biomorphic Forms, provides an overview of the concepts and interplay between the surface treatments of the forms and their sculpted interior elements and how certain forms reveal, while other forms hide themselves from the viewer. It also confers the motivations behind …
Effect Of Viewing Conditions On The Detection Of Proximal Dental Caries In Intraoral Digital Images With And Without Computer-Assisted Diagnosis., Lauren Christine Szechy 1989-
Effect Of Viewing Conditions On The Detection Of Proximal Dental Caries In Intraoral Digital Images With And Without Computer-Assisted Diagnosis., Lauren Christine Szechy 1989-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Dental caries is the most common childhood ailment and one of the most prevalent chronic diseases of people worldwide. Approximately 91% of dentate adults 20 years or older have experienced dental caries. Carious lesions on proximal surfaces are particularly difficult to detect clinically, which is why intraoral radiography has become a supplemental method used to aid diagnosis. It was hypothesized that the accuracy of detection of proximal caries with the unaided eye would be reduced in sub-optimal viewing conditions; furthermore, the use of computer-assisted diagnostic software (Logicon Caries Detector) would improve the overall accuracy of observers. Methods: Eighteen radiographs …
Mr Imaging Of Left-Ventricular Function : Novel Image Acquisition And Analysis Techniques., Hui Wang
Mr Imaging Of Left-Ventricular Function : Novel Image Acquisition And Analysis Techniques., Hui Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many cardiac diseases, such as myocardial ischemia, secondary to coronary artery disease, may be identified and localized through the analysis of cardiac deformations. Early efforts for quantifying ventricular wall motion used surgical implantation and tracking of radiopaque markers with X-ray imaging in canine hearts [1]. Such techniques are invasive and affect the regional motion pattern of the ventricular wall during the marker tracking process and, clearly are not feasible clinically. Noninvasive imaging techniques are vital and have been widely applied to the clinic. MRI is a noninvasive imaging technique with the capability to monitor and assess the progression of cardiovascular …

The Effect Of Implant Placement And Simultaneous Soft Tissue Augmentation In The Esthetic Zone Using Either Connective Tissue Autograft Or Acellular Dermal Matrix Allograft On Peri-Implant Hard And Soft Tissue Healing., Gretchen A. Wigand
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aims. The primary aims of this randomized, controlled, blinded clinical trial were to compare the hard and soft tissue response following either a connective tissue (CT) or acellular dermal matrix (ADM) graft placed simultaneously with a laser-grooved implant. Methods. Twenty-five patients received a single tooth implant in the maxillary anterior that was bordered by two teeth. Patients were randomly selected, using to coin toss, to receive either an ADM (test) or a CT (control) graft. At the 2-month appointment, the implant was uncovered and a lab-fabricated provisional was placed. At the 4-month appointment, following 2 months of tissue shaping, a …
Albert Taylor Bledsoe : Whig Intellectual And Proslavery Theorist., Lori Jean Wilson 1974-
Albert Taylor Bledsoe : Whig Intellectual And Proslavery Theorist., Lori Jean Wilson 1974-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the life and career of Albert Taylor Bledsoe, a conservative Whig intellectual and proslavery theorist. It seeks to understand an apparent contradiction in Bledsoe's public comments regarding slavery and secession. Bledsoe lived in a socially and politically dynamic world. His comments on slavery must be understood in the different political contexts in which they were made. This thesis explores those contexts and illuminates Bledsoe's desire to preserve social hierarchies and maintain public order, which Bledsoe believed necessary to secure liberty and equality among white men. The same concerns informed Bledsoe's shift toward secession. Bledsoe remained a Unionist …

Dysregulation Of Microrna Expression In Acquired Endocrine-Resistant Breast Cancer., Tissa Thomas Manavalan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by repressing translation or stimulating mRNA degradation. In this study, I tested the hypothesis that miRNAs are differentially expressed in antiestrogen-sensitive MCF-7 versus -resistant L Y2 human breast cancer cells. Microarray analyses identified 97 miRNAs that are differentially expressed between two estrogen receptor alpha (ERa) -positive human breast cancer cell lines: endocrine-sensitive MCF-7 versus -resistant L Y2 cells under basal conditions. Opposite expression of miRs-lOa,-21, -22, -12Sb, -181, -200a, -200b, -200c, -221, and -222 was confirmed between MCF-7 and L Y2 cells. The ER antagonist ICI 182,780 (fulvestrant or Faslodex) generally …
Integrin Inhibitor Cyclorgdfv Blunts Enhanced Lps-Induced Liver Injury Caused By Ethanol In Mice., Veronica L. Massey
Integrin Inhibitor Cyclorgdfv Blunts Enhanced Lps-Induced Liver Injury Caused By Ethanol In Mice., Veronica L. Massey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background. Progression of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is associated with an increase in fibrin extracellular matrix (ECM) and inflammation. Previous studies have shown that this accumulation of fibrin in ALD is mediated by impaired fibrinolysis. Additionally, it is known that fibrin(ogen) interacts with the av~3 integrin of endothelial cells. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that hepatic inflammation caused by alcohol is mediated, at least in part, by activation of integrin av~3 by fibrin(ogen). To test this hypothesis, a study was designed to determine the effect of cycloRGDN, a peptide inhibitor of integrin av~3, in a …
