Fas-Activated Serine Threonine Kinase 4 Is A Mitochondrial Protein, Johnna St Clair
Fas-Activated Serine Threonine Kinase 4 Is A Mitochondrial Protein, Johnna St Clair
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Mitochondria play an essential role in eukaryotic cells, supplying energy levels which vastly exceed those available to prokaryotes. They rely heavily on the import of nuclear encoded proteins for their function. The FAST family of proteins which are synthesized in the cytoplasm and imported into mitochondria are an example of this. The FAST family has not been well characterized, and next to nothing is known about several FAST family members. In the following I have reviewed what is known about each member of the FAST protein family including conserved domains, structures, including roles in cellular function, apoptosis and disease. Additionally, …

Interactive Software Systems For Planar Parallel Manipulator- And Spherical Four-Bar Linkage- Design, Kartik Thakkar
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Dimensional Synthesis is of crucial importance in robotics for trajectory planning, task specication in Mechanism Synthesis,CNC tool path planning as well as in micro and nano systems, where kinematics plays an important role. This thesis presents an interactive software for the dimensional synthesis of planar parallel manipulators (PPMs) and spherical four bar motion approximation from a given set of displacements. For PPMs, a user friendly and interactive graphical software has been developed for the synthesis using C++,OpenGL and Qt. The software is designed and implemented using an Object Oriented Programming (OOP) architecture. This architecture naturally maps mathematical formulation of the …
The Role Of Dystroglycan In Differentiating Oligodendroglia And Cns Myelination, Christopher Edward Eyermann
The Role Of Dystroglycan In Differentiating Oligodendroglia And Cns Myelination, Christopher Edward Eyermann
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
During central nervous system (CNS) development, individual oligodendrocytes myelinate multiple axons, thus requiring the outgrowth and extensive branching of oligodendroglial processes. Extrinsic cues including the extracellular matrix (ECM) molecule laminin regulate oligodendrocyte maturation; indeed, laminin-deficient mice have fewer myelinated axons, which may indicate a defect in the ability to properly extend and branch processes. It remains unclear, however, to what extent ECM receptors contribute to oligodendroglial process remodeling itself. Here I report that the ECM receptor dystroglycan is necessary for laminin enhancement of filopodial formation, process outgrowth, and process branching in differentiating oligodendroglia. During early oligodendroglial differentiation, the disruption of …
Contemporary Manhattan Cartographies: Ephemeral Public Projects In New York, Andrew Wasserman
Contemporary Manhattan Cartographies: Ephemeral Public Projects In New York, Andrew Wasserman
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation considers the emergence of a cartographic public practice in both contemporary art and contemporary cities, attending to the ways in which ephemeral public projects create map-like objects that diverge from official urban projections. Rather than marking a single location, such projects structure networked connections between several sites, transforming undifferentiated urban spaces into legible urban places. Evaluation of this recent cartographic turn entails the triple consideration of placemaking, placemakers, and placemarkers as constructing spatialized identities for different neighborhoods and setting forth wayfinding strategies within these same neighborhoods. Focusing on Manhattan, the dissertation surveys how the borough has served as …
Functional Analysis Of Human Sts-2 And Sts-2 Mutants Derived From Vitiligo Patients, Liucong Ling
Functional Analysis Of Human Sts-2 And Sts-2 Mutants Derived From Vitiligo Patients, Liucong Ling
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The purpose of this study was twofold: firstly, to investigate the functional differences between the short and long isoforms of human Sts-2, and secondly to identify functional consequences of specific mutations within the human T cell signaling protein Sts-2 (hSts-2). The mutations are associated with generalized vitiligo, an autoimmune disease affecting 0.5-2% population. Sts-2 exists in two forms, a short form containing 623 amino acids and a longer splice variant form containing 661 amino acids. Because two forms of hSts-2 exist, the effect of mutations in both forms was investigated. Short form hSts-2 was found to express at much higher …

Alendronate And Pth Differentially Modulate Bone Quality And Reduce Adiposity In An Ovx Rat Model, Andrea Trinward Kwaczala
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Post-menopausal osteoporosis is defined by a reduction in bone quantity and quality. Bone quality is an accumulation of factors including bone mass, structure, geometry, microarchitecture, tissue mineral density and chemistry. Currently, osteoporosis is treated with pharmaceuticals such as anti-catabolic bisphosphonates such as alendronate (ALN) which maintains bone mass by blocking bone resorption, or anabolic drugs such as parathyroid hormone (PTH) which increases bone mass by increasing bone formation. Due to their different modes of preserving bone, there may be differential drug-driven alterations to bone tissue quality which affect bone strength. Additionally, osteoporosis is associated with increased body mass and abdominal …

Conflicts, Riots, And Korean Americans In Los Angeles, 1965-1992, Chanhaeng Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Facing numerous disadvantages in the U.S. labor market, Koreans immigrating in the wake of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act found few options but to run small businesses. Lower start-up costs brought them to low-income, inner-city communities, which were increasingly Black and Brown as state investment dwindled and Whites fled to the suburbs. Structural economic and historical social conditions gave rise to conflicts, especially with Black customers. In Los Angeles, Black-Korean tensions reached a peak in late April 1992, when more than two thousand Korean-owned stores were burned and/or looted. This project explores the ways in which Korean immigrants navigated …
Thematic Resultative Expressions In English And Japanese: A View From Syntax Of Event Aspect, Yukiko Asano
Thematic Resultative Expressions In English And Japanese: A View From Syntax Of Event Aspect, Yukiko Asano
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines the cross-linguistic behavior of Thematic Resultative Expressions in English and Japanese from the viewpoint of syntax-semantics mappings of event aspects, and discusses the source of some of their well-recognized syntactic and syntactico-semantic properties. Thematic Resultative Expressions (e.g. John smashed the cake flat) are known to be subject to the so-called Direct Object Restriction (Levin and Rappaport Hovav 1995), which is not observed among mono-clausal sentences involving other types of secondary predicates. Furthermore, Thematic Resultative Expressions characteristically describe an event with an endpoint, where the state denoted by the secondary predicate (e.g. flat) is understood to be true …
Energy-Efficient Wide Datapath Integer Arithmetic Logic Units Using Superconductor Logic, Christopher Lawrence Ayala
Energy-Efficient Wide Datapath Integer Arithmetic Logic Units Using Superconductor Logic, Christopher Lawrence Ayala
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) technology is currently the most widely used integrated circuit technology today. As CMOS approaches the physical limitations of scaling, it is unclear whether or not it can provide long-term support for niche areas such as high-performance computing and telecommunication infrastructure, particularly with the emergence of cloud computing. Alternatively, superconductor technologies based on Josephson junction (JJ) switching elements such as Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic and especially its new variant, Energy-Efficient Rapid Single Flux Quantum (ERSFQ) logic have the capability to provide an ultra-high-speed, low power platform for digital systems. The objective of this research is to …
Exploring Advanced Communication Primitives Using Greedy Routing In Sensor Networks And Other Complex Networks, Xiaomeng Ban
Exploring Advanced Communication Primitives Using Greedy Routing In Sensor Networks And Other Complex Networks, Xiaomeng Ban
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Scalable point-to-point routing on a wireless sensor network has been an active research topic for the past ten years. The major challenge comes from the fundamental resource limitation of sensor nodes, in terms of storage size and communication bandwidth. The solution that requires a node to acquire the entire network topology does not scale well. In the past few years there have been a number of innovative proposals on scalable routing schemes where each node only keeps local information and a routing path can be discovered by iteratively applying greedy routing decisions. Such work has mainly focused on issues such …
Conservative And Accurate Data Remapping For Coupling Climate Models (Wrf And Cam), Ying Chen
Conservative And Accurate Data Remapping For Coupling Climate Models (Wrf And Cam), Ying Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The two-way coupling of WRF and CAM for regional climate modeling requires transferring data (such as wind velocities, temperature, moisture, etc.) between the grids of WRF and CAM. These grids are in general non-matching, and the data transfer should be both physical conservative and numerically accurate. Our method contains two parts: constructing the common refinement and conservative data transfer using the common refinement. The former computes the cell intersections and provides the necessary data structures for the latter. We project the grids of WRF and CAM onto a plain surface using their corresponding map projection methods (such as: Lambert conformal …

Direct Photon Tagged Jets In 200 Gev Au+Au Collisions At Phenix, Megan Elizabeth Connors
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A hot dense medium called the quark gluon plasma (QGP) has been created at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Quarks and gluons are deconfined in the QGP state but many of its properties are still under investigation. One interesting observation is that high momentum partons (quarks and gluons), which result from hard scatterings in the initial collision, lose energy as they travel through the medium. These partons fragment into the particles observed in the detector. Since fully reconstructing all the "jet" particles associated with the initial parton is complicated by the high multiplicity background produced in heavy-ion collisions, two …

Da Shahidano Chawk: Martyrs' Square In Kandahar City, Afghanistan, William E. Donovan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The Shahidano Chawk is a monument in the center of Kandahar City, Afghanistan. It was constructed after World War II, in the period between 1946 and 1948. This thesis explores the various meanings the monument has embodied since its creation. It was originally an ethno-nationalist monument which used two highly charged events, the 1843 massacre at the Herat gate, and the 1880 battle of Maiwand, as motivational motifs to help cement the Pashtun people at a time of crisis. The crisis was the formation of Pakistan, and the transition of the Durand Line from a line demarcating a sphere of …
On The Variability Of Mineral Dust And The Intertropical Convergence Zone Over West Africa: A Synthesis Of Observations, Climate Models And Geochemical Analysis, Owen Doherty
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Mineral dust in the atmosphere is of great importance through its impacts on climate, atmospheric chemistry and biogeochemical processes. The year-to-year and season-to-season variability of mineral dust transport are not well understood. This work focuses on investigating and explaining the inter-annual variability of mineral dust transport by an approach that combines data analysis from in-situ observations, global climate models, multiple reanalysis products and geochemical laboratory analysis. Linking a 38-year record of mineral dust concentration at Barbados to variations in position and intensity of the zone of nearsurface convergence over West Africa, a part of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) a …
Factors Influencing Metal Accumulation In Two Estuarine Fish, Jessica Dutton
Factors Influencing Metal Accumulation In Two Estuarine Fish, Jessica Dutton
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Small forage fish are a conduit for the transfer of metals from lower trophic levels to their predators and potentially human consumers of contaminated seafood. A metal bioaccumulation model has been developed for aquatic organisms, including fish, to determine: (1) the predicted body burden of metals at steady-state based upon the rate of metal uptake and loss from aqueous and dietary sources, and (2) the percentage of accumulated metal attributable to dietary exposure. However, this model assumes that rates of metal uptake and loss following aqueous and dietary exposure are constant and that fish only consume one type of prey. …
Understanding Carbohydrate Recognition By Antiviral Lectins: Applying Computational Methods To Protein-Carbohydrate Complexes, Yukiji Karen Fujimoto
Understanding Carbohydrate Recognition By Antiviral Lectins: Applying Computational Methods To Protein-Carbohydrate Complexes, Yukiji Karen Fujimoto
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection of T-cells begins when the viral envelope glycoprotein, gp120, binds to CD4 receptors on the target cell surface. Over the past several years, proteins isolated from various prokaryotes have been shown to inhibit HIV cell entry by binding to gp120 and thus blocking the association with CD4. Lectins that bind to high-mannose oligosaccharides on gp120 are an attractive class of antiviral agents. While several of these have been quite well characterized both structurally and biochemically, there remain many open questions regarding their mechanism of inhibition. Among the best studied is cyanovirin-N (CVN), which is currently …
Azimuthal Anisotropy Measurement Of Neutral Pion And Inclusive Charge Hadron Production In Au+Au Collisions At Sqrt(S_Nn) = 62 And 39 Gev, Xiaoyang Gong
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The harmonic flow coefficients vn with n=2,3,4 are measured for neutral pions and inclusive charged hadrons in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62 and 39 GeV with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These vn coefficients characterize the anisotropy of particle productions in the azimuth at different angular scale, which are sensitive to the transport properties and initial spatial asymmetries of the hot and dense medium created in these collisions. Significant values of vn are observed for neutral pions (for n = 2) and inclusive charge hadron (for n = 2, 3, 4) at both collision …

Screening For Steroid-Derived Immunomodulatory Metabolites Biosynthesized By Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (M. Tuberculosis), Xiaoqian Jin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Tuberculosis (Tb) is a serious worldwide threat to human health killing 1.4 million people every year. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis), the causative agent for Tb, has infected 30% of the world's population. The emergence of multidrug, extensively drug, and total drug resistant organisms (MDR/XDR/TDR TB) creates an urgent demand to develop new drugs with novel mechanisms to be effective against both sensitive and drug-resistant strains of M. tuberculosis. The cholesterol metabolism pathway in M. tuberculosis is important for mycobacterial survival in the host macrophage. We proposed that cholesterol serves as a starting material for biosynthesis of steroid-derived immunomodulators that down-regulate …

A Jest's Prosperity Lies In The Ear / Of Him That Hears It, Never In The Tongue / Of Him That Makes It, Laura Konigsberg
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
After fifty years of religious upheaval, the question of religion continued to be a sociopolitical problem throughout the reign of Elizabeth I and into the reign of James I. Through his characters crises of identity and through the attempted incursion of Roman Catholicism into society by characters' aligned with Spain, Shakespeare addresses England's anxiety over religious identity. By portraying the difference between Protestant and Roman Catholic ideology and rite, Shakespeare reflects the relationship between the Catholic and Protestant psychologies by flavoring his plays, throughout his career, with nuggets of Roman Catholic doctrine; these are not mementos, but rather instances wherein …
Understanding The Effects Of Multivalent Glycopolymer Structure On Molecular Recognition, Eunjung Lee
Understanding The Effects Of Multivalent Glycopolymer Structure On Molecular Recognition, Eunjung Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Carbohydrate-protein interactions are involved in a large number of important physiological and pathological processes. The weak binding affinity of a monovalent carbohydrate is compensated by multivalency in which multimeric recognition elements interact with a cell surface display of two or more receptors. In order to study lectin-carbohydrate interactions and find analytical and diagnostic applications, a large number of synthetic glycoconjugates have been investigated in the last decade. In order to explore the effects of structural features of glycopolymers on the binding events, a series of polymers were synthesized. Multivalent ligands with pendant saccharide moieties were prepared from two different types …
Hyperkahler 4n-Manifolds With N Commuting Quaternionic Killing Fields, Joseph Malkoun
Hyperkahler 4n-Manifolds With N Commuting Quaternionic Killing Fields, Joseph Malkoun
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We consider a hyperk? hler 4n-manifold M. Using local holomorphic Darboux coordinates with respect to a compatible complex structure I on M, we find local necessary and sufficient conditions for a real smooth vector field X on M to be quaternionic Killing. We then apply this result to the case of a hyperk? hler manifold M admitting n commuting quaternionic Killing fields, X^1,... | X^n, the first n-1 of which are further assumed to be triholomorphic and quaternionically linearly independent pointwise. We then have two cases: if the self-dual part of DX^n vanishes, we get back the Hitchin-Karlhede-Lindstr??m-Roček result, and …
Improving Cancer Detection Through Visualization, Joseph Marino
Improving Cancer Detection Through Visualization, Joseph Marino
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The proliferation of medical scanning technology, especially computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), has led to various research works on methods of intuitively visualizing the large amounts of resulting slice data. The visualization of this data consists not only of display methods, but ideas covering topics such as navigation, exploration, surface parameterization, and analysis. These imaging modalities can play a large role in diagnosing a multitude of diseases, including carcinomas of the colon, lungs, and prostate. The work presented in this dissertation develops varied visualization techniques for application to the detection and localization of these three prevalent cancers. …
A Stochastic Segmentation Model For Categorical And Continuous Features Of Various Biological Sequential, Yifan Mo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Nowadays, Hidden Markov Model (HMM) has been widely used in analysis of various biological data for both smoothing and clustering. However, characterizing each hidden state by a single distribution, the classical HMM might have some limitations on the data whose hidden state is composed by a mixture of distributions (Heng Lian et al. | 2006). To address this issue, we proposed a new stochastic segmentation model and an associated estimation procedure that has attractive analytical and computational properties. We combined the forward and backward filter together based on Bayes' theorem to calculate the posterior mean and variance. Besides, we developed …
Performance Study Of Cascade Reconstruction At The Glashow Resonance In Icecube, Hans Martin Niederhausen
Performance Study Of Cascade Reconstruction At The Glashow Resonance In Icecube, Hans Martin Niederhausen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
IceCube is a one cubic kilometer neutrino telescope at the South Pole. Its primary goal is to discover high energy cosmic neutrinos and anti-neutrinos from astrophysical sources. Observation of the spectrum near the characteristic energy $E_\nu\approx6.3\,\mbox{PeV}$ of the Glashow resonance, the interaction of anti-neutrinos with atomic electrons via $\bar{\nu}_e+e^{-}\rightarrow W^{-}$, is of particular interest. Since the cross section for this process can be calculated from first principles, it is possible to quantify separately the fluxes for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos if the resonance is observed above a continuum. In turn, such a separation will give unique insights into the astrophysics properties …
The Confessions Of Augustine's Flesh: Counter-Conducts Overwhelming To Pastoral Power In Christian Conversion, Darla Senami Migan
The Confessions Of Augustine's Flesh: Counter-Conducts Overwhelming To Pastoral Power In Christian Conversion, Darla Senami Migan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In his 1978 lectures at the College de France, Security Territory Population, Michel Foucault shifts his analysis of power by arguing for pastoral power as both the prelude to governmentality and as the decisive moment in the constitution of the Western subject. If the history of the Christian pastorate involves " the entire history of procedures of human individualization in the West (184)," then, Foucault argues, there has never been a revolt against pastoral power because such a revolt would be a revolt against the constitution of the self, that is to say against self-consciousness. If the revolt against pastoral …
A Gay Neoclassical Movement, Robert E. Diamond
A Gay Neoclassical Movement, Robert E. Diamond
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In anticipation of a larger project, I propose a broad view of the Neoclassical period. The question of gay culture, and, particularly, where it exists before the emergence of the modern internal gay subculture in the 20th century, is a pertinent art historical topic, since the very evidence for gay communities comes in large part from visual culture. The Neoclassical period offers a rich repository of homoerotic art that is, in fact, based on self-conscious artistic expression emerging from an underground but bourgeoning homosexual community. This expression includes not only the movement's important theorist, Winckelmann, but also many of the …
Transnational Interlocks And Global Business, Josh Murray
Transnational Interlocks And Global Business, Josh Murray
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Economic globalization raises questions about whether the emerging transnational business class acts in unison or whether the global business community is internally factionalized. In this context, interlocking directorates that connect transnational corporations play an important role. However, we know surprisingly little about the impact the growing number of such transnational interlocks has on national-level economic and political strategies. Transnational capitalist class (TCC) theory posits that a segment of global capital has emerged as a class and seeks to influence national governments on behalf of transnational class interests by engaging in political behavior that is 1) globally, rather than nationally oriented; …

Hostility is a multidimensional construct related to cardiovascular (CV) disease risk. Daily hostile mood and social interactions may precipitate stress-related CV responses in hostile individuals. Purpose: Determine whether trait cognitive hostility best predicts daily hostile mood and social interactions relative to other trait hostility factors and explore the temporal links between these daily measures
