The X-Ray View Of Ob Star Wind Structure And Dynamics, David H. Cohen Dec 2012

The X-Ray View Of Ob Star Wind Structure And Dynamics, David H. Cohen

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

High-resolution X-ray grating spectroscopy enables us to measure the kinematics and spatial distribution of the shock-heated wind plasma in O and early B stars, testing the predictions of the embedded wind shock scenario of massive star X-ray production. By fitting models to the resolved, Doppler broadened X-ray emission line profiles measured by the Chandra X-ray Observatory's grating spectrometer, we find an onset radius of X-ray production of roughly Ro = 1.5 R★ for the O supergiants, ζ Pup and HD 93129A. From the profile fitting we also find that the terminal velocity of the X-ray emitting plasma is consistent with …

More than 60% of human infectious diseases are caused by pathogens shared with wild or domestic animals. Zoonotic disease organisms include those that are endemic in human populations or enzootic in animal populations with frequent cross-species transmission to people. Some of these diseases have only emerged recently. Together, these organisms are responsible for a substantial burden of disease, with endemic and enzootic zoonoses causing about a billion cases of illness in people and millions of deaths every year. Emerging zoonoses are a growing threat to global health and have caused hundreds of billions of US dollars of economic damage in …

Host–Guest Complexes Of Pentiptycene Receptors Display Edge-To-Face Interaction, Lorenzo Mosca, Petr Koutník, Vincent M. Lynch, Grigory V. Zyryanov, Nina A. Esipenko, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Dec 2012

Host–Guest Complexes Of Pentiptycene Receptors Display Edge-To-Face Interaction, Lorenzo Mosca, Petr Koutník, Vincent M. Lynch, Grigory V. Zyryanov, Nina A. Esipenko, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The pentiptycene receptors form edge-to-face complexes with a variety of aromatic guests including nitroaromatics. X-ray diffractometry revealed that compounds 1, 2, and 3 form host-guest assemblies with a thienyl fragment (from a neightboring molecule of 1), benzene and nitrobenzene, respectively. X-ray studies of the three crystal structures reported here strongly suggest the edge-to-face to be a predominant binding mode between the aromatic guests and electron-rich faces of the pentiptycene aromatic cavity.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A supramolecular assay based on two fluorescent cucurbit[n]uril probes enables the recognition and quantification of nitrosamines, including cancer-associated nitrosamines, compounds that are difficult to recognize. The cross-reactive sensor leverages weak interactions and competition among the probe, metal, and guest, yielding high information density in the signal output (variance) and enabling the recognition of structurally similar guests.

Asymmetries And Incentives In Plea Bargaining And Evidence Production, Saul Levmore, Ariel Porat Dec 2012

Asymmetries And Incentives In Plea Bargaining And Evidence Production, Saul Levmore, Ariel Porat

Articles

Legal rules severely restrict payments to fact witnesses, though the government can often offer plea bargains or other nonmonetary inducements to encourage testimony. This asymmetry is something of a puzzle, for most asymmetries in criminal law favor the defendant. The asymmetry seems to disappear when physical evidence is at issue. One goal of this Essay is to understand the distinctions, or asymmetries, between monetary and nonmonetary payments, testimonial and physical evidence, and payments by the prosecution and defense. Another is to suggest ways in which law could better encourage the production of evidence, and thus the efficient reduction of crime, …

Investigation On Thermo-Mechanical Instability Of Porous Low Dielectric Constant Materials, Emil Hyunbae Zin Dec 2012

Investigation On Thermo-Mechanical Instability Of Porous Low Dielectric Constant Materials, Emil Hyunbae Zin

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This study investigates the structural stability of porous low dielectric constant materials (PLK) under thermal and mechanical load and the influence of contributing factors including porosity as intrinsic factor and plasma damage and moisture absorption as extrinsic factors on thermo-mechanical instability of PLK in advanced Cu/PLK interconnects. For this purpose, a ball indentation creep test technique was developed to examine the thermal and mechanical instability of PLK at relevant load and temperature conditions in the interconnect structure. Our exploration with the ball indentation creep test found that PLK films plastically deforms with time, indicating that viscoplastic deformation does occur under …

First-Principles Studies On N-Type And P-Type Doping In Cuprous Oxide, Qiong Bai Dec 2012

First-Principles Studies On N-Type And P-Type Doping In Cuprous Oxide, Qiong Bai

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

We have performed studies on n-type and p-type cuprous oxide with and without doping by first principles methods. Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) is used for the geometry optimization. The total energy and the final electronic structure calculations are conducted using the nonlocal screened Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid density functionals approach for cuprous oxide. The HSE hybrid density functionals overcome the shortcoming of GGA, which gives a much reliable value of the band gap. The formation energies of native point defects in undoped cuprous oxide have been studied by HSE hybrid functional theory in two conditions, which are vacuum based condition and …

Properties Of Concrete With Tire Derived Aggregate And Crumb Rubber As A Ligthweight Substitute For Mineral Aggregates In The Concrete Mix, Gideon Momanyi Siringi Dec 2012

Properties Of Concrete With Tire Derived Aggregate And Crumb Rubber As A Ligthweight Substitute For Mineral Aggregates In The Concrete Mix, Gideon Momanyi Siringi

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Scrap tires continue to be a nuisance to the environment and this research proposes one way of recycling them as a lightweight aggregate which can substitute for mineral aggregates in concrete. Aggregates derived from scrap tires are often referred to as Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA). First, the focus is how much mineral aggregate can be replaced by these waste tires and how the properties of concrete are affected with the introduction of rubber. This is being mindful of the fact that for a new material to be acceptable as an engineering material, its properties and behavior has to be well …

Legal And Policy Implications Of The Perception Of Property Rights In Catch Shares, Mark Fina, Tyson Kade Dec 2012

Legal And Policy Implications Of The Perception Of Property Rights In Catch Shares, Mark Fina, Tyson Kade

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Catch shares are a fishery management strategy under which persons are allocated exclusive access to specific portions of the total allowable catch of a fishery. Proponents of catch share management argue that these programs allow for more efficient management of annual catch limits and mitigate the negative biological and economic impacts associated with other management programs. Because of the exclusivity of their allocations, catch share programs have been characterized by their opponents as privatizing the public fisheries resource and granting catch share holders a property right to fish. However, case law suggests that a court is unlikely to conclude that …

Leopold's Last Talk, Eric T. Freyfogle Dec 2012

Leopold's Last Talk, Eric T. Freyfogle

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

During the last decade of his life, Aldo Leopold (1887–1948) delivered more than 100 conservation talks to various popular, professional, and student audiences. In them, he set forth plainly the central elements of his conservation thought. By studying the extensive archival records of these talks one sees clearly the core elements of Leopold’s mature thinking, which centered not on specific land-use practices (good or bad), but instead on what he saw as deep flaws in American culture. Leopold’s sharp cultural criticism—more clear in these talks than in his lyrical, muted classic, A Sand County Almanac—called into question not just …

Oil Development In Anwr: The Precautionary Principle Is Compatible With The Fish And Wildlife Service's Statutory Mandate, Trisna Tanus Dec 2012

Oil Development In Anwr: The Precautionary Principle Is Compatible With The Fish And Wildlife Service's Statutory Mandate, Trisna Tanus

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

The potential for oil production in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) coastal plain, otherwise known as the 1002 Area, is significant, with a current value of $770 billion. Yet, there are considerable knowledge gaps and disagreements over the environmental impacts of oil development in ANWR. The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) manages ANWR and is tasked with advancing the refuge’s mission of ecological conservation. Before it can approve oil development in ANWR, the FWS is statutorily required to ensure that oil development is compatible with ANWR’s mission. This Comment argues that the precautionary principle is embedded within the laws …

Exploring The Role Of Organic Matter Accumulation On Delta Evolution, Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba, Vaughan R. Voller, Chris Paola, Robert R. Twilley, Azure E. Bevington Dec 2012

Exploring The Role Of Organic Matter Accumulation On Delta Evolution, Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba, Vaughan R. Voller, Chris Paola, Robert R. Twilley, Azure E. Bevington

Faculty Publications

[1] We explore the role of plant matter accumulation in the sediment column in determining the response of fluvial-deltas to base-level rise and simple subsidence profiles. Making the assumption that delta building processes operate to preserve the geometry of the delta plain, we model organic sedimentation in terms of the plant matter accumulation and accommodation (space made for sediment deposition) rates. A spatial integration of the organic sedimentation, added to the known river sediment input, leads to a model of delta evolution that estimates the fraction of organic sediments preserved in the delta. The model predicts that the maximum organic …

Event-Related Potential (Erp) Studies Of Spatial Working Memory, Chui Luen Vera Hau Dec 2012

Event-Related Potential (Erp) Studies Of Spatial Working Memory, Chui Luen Vera Hau

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation aims to characterize the neural processes in association with the updating and storage of spatial information. Selective information processing has been suggested as the underlying mechanism for updating and selective maintenance of object information in working memory. It is unclear whether similar mechanism is involved in updating spatial information. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the neural representation of no longer relevant spatial information would show transient or sustained effects on working memory. Two event-related potentials (ERPs) experiments were conducted to examine (1) the neural processes involved in selecting relevant spatial locations from working memory and the subsequent effect …
