The Myth Of A Nation: Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald And The Corruption Of The American Ideal, Kelly Carroll Daugherty
The Myth Of A Nation: Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald And The Corruption Of The American Ideal, Kelly Carroll Daugherty
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
America's national image has long been personified by images of its so-called "founding fathers." Figures such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin drafted the classic representations of American social and individual ideals, those characterized by an abundance of access to prosperity, opportunity and possibility. Following the First World War, the viability of the prosperous and self-sufficient American life was called into question by the writers of the Lost Generation. Writing in postwar America, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald recognized a shift in the nation's values and self-image, and used their work to call attention to this social and cultural …
A New Approach To The Synthesis Of The Bicyclic Core Of The Immunosuppressants Snf4435 C & Snf4435 D Via Silicon Tethering, Andrew Daniel Dick
A New Approach To The Synthesis Of The Bicyclic Core Of The Immunosuppressants Snf4435 C & Snf4435 D Via Silicon Tethering, Andrew Daniel Dick
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The total synthesis of immunosuppressant and multidrug resistant (MDR) reversal agents SNF4435 C and SNF4435 D, isolated from the culture broth of an Okinawan strain of Streptomyces spectabilis in 2001, has been accomplished in a fourteen step process. The key reaction utilizes a Stille coupling en route to the final products. Considering the limitations of the Stille coupling, we are currently adjusting the procedure to allow for a new approach, which involves the use of a molecular tether to join the two precursor molecules. This thesis describes the synthesis of a new pair of precursors as well as our efforts …
Causes And Effects Of Epithelial Morphogenesis In Pancreatitis And Pancreatic Cancer, Kathleen Elizabeth Delgiorno
Causes And Effects Of Epithelial Morphogenesis In Pancreatitis And Pancreatic Cancer, Kathleen Elizabeth Delgiorno
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly lethal disease due to lack of early detection, making the study of initiating events, intrinsic and extrinsic, invaluable. An aberrant epithelial structure consistently associated with PDAC development is the metaplastic ductal lesion (MDL), formed as a result of acinar to ductal metaplasia (ADM) and hypothesized to be pre-neoplastic. Through lineage tracing and immunohistochemistry I have determined that MDLs derive from acinar cells that have converted to structures resembling the developmentally related biliary duct gland. Consistent with this process, MDLs co-express the transcription factors PDX1 and SOX17, a molecular signature reserved for pancreatobiliary progenitor …
Fabrication And Characterization Of Polylactic Acid And Polylactic Acid/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanofibers Through Centrifugal Spinning, Richard Patlan
Fabrication And Characterization Of Polylactic Acid And Polylactic Acid/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanofibers Through Centrifugal Spinning, Richard Patlan
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Biocompatible polymer nanofibers hold great potential in the biomedical engineering field. Their biodegradable nature and enhanced properties could help solve a wide array of health related problems, particularly in the areas of tissue regeneration, drug delivery, and biosensor design. The novel ForcespinningTM method allows the production of submicron fibers without many of the drawbacks found in electrospinning, while also providing a substantial increase in fiber production. The aim of the study was to utilize this method to fabricate non-woven nanofibrous mats composed of polylactic acid (PLA) and polylactic acid/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite fibers. The morphology, thermal properties, and crystalline structure …
Development Of A Vibration And Temperature Measurement Device For Railroad Bearings, Andrea P. Arguelles
Development Of A Vibration And Temperature Measurement Device For Railroad Bearings, Andrea P. Arguelles
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Bearing related derailments cause very high cost and inconvenience to the railroad industry. Various wayside detection systems have been implemented to assess bearing condition and prevent premature failure. However, current devices fail to determine the internal condition of bearings or provide insight regarding the danger and severity of defects and abnormalities that may be present. To this end, a device combining both temperature and vibration detection was designed to be embedded in railroad bearing adapters. In order to efficiently design a railroad bearing condition-monitoring system, two factors that must be considered are the capabilities available to operate the different sensors …
Generalizing Agent Plans And Behaviors With Automated Staged Observation In The Real-Time Strategy Game Starcraft, Zackary A. Gill
Generalizing Agent Plans And Behaviors With Automated Staged Observation In The Real-Time Strategy Game Starcraft, Zackary A. Gill
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In this thesis we investigate the processes involved in learning to play a game. It was inspired by two observations about how human players learn to play. First, learning the domain is intertwined with goal pursuit. Second, games are designed to ramp up in complexity, walking players through a gradual cycle of acquiring, refining, and generalizing knowledge about the domain. This approach does not rely on traces of expert play. We created an integrated planning, learning and execution system that uses StarCraft as its domain. The planning module creates command/event groupings based on the data received. Observations of unit behavior …
Urban Politics And The Assimilation Of Immigrant Voters, Rick Su
Urban Politics And The Assimilation Of Immigrant Voters, Rick Su
Journal Articles
Despite the growing strength of immigrant voters in the U.S., immigrants continue to participate at the polls in much lower rates than not only native voters, but also immigrants in the past. What accounts for this disparity? Looking beyond the characteristics of the immigrants themselves, this essay argues that a major reason lies in the different political structure that immigrants face upon their arrival, especially at the local level. Tracing the evolution of big city politics alongside, and in response to, the three major waves of foreign immigration to the U.S., this essay outlines three competing models of immigrant political …

Examining Effects Of Picture Content On False Recognition In Consistent And Inconsistent Handers., Rosanna G. Scott
Examining Effects Of Picture Content On False Recognition In Consistent And Inconsistent Handers., Rosanna G. Scott
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Multiple previous studies agree that inconsistent handers exhibit a memory advantage over consistent handers, oftentimes in reference to inconsistents exhibiting lower false alarm rates. Two recent studies have found contrasting data, demonstrating that, compared to consistently handed individuals, inconsistently handed individuals exhibit a higher false alarm rate in recognition memory following the encoding of pictures of objects, regardless of whether lures are pictures or object names. From this research, it is unclear whether inconsistent individuals have difficulty remembering pictures of all types, or only pictures of objects. In the current study, participants studied pictures without focal objects (i.e., landscapes and …
Note – The Right To Be Forgotten, Robert Kirk Walker
Note – The Right To Be Forgotten, Robert Kirk Walker
UC Law Journal
Information posted to the Internet is never truly forgotten. While permanently available data offers significant social benefits, it also carries substantial risks to a data subject if personal information is used out of context or in ways that are harmful to the subject’s reputation. The potential for harm is especially dire when personal information is disclosed without a subject’s consent. In response to these risks, European policymakers have proposed legislation recognizing a “right to be forgotten.” This right would provide persons in European Union countries with a legal mechanism to compel the removal of their personal data from online databases. …
The Expressive Cost Of Corporate Immunity, Gregory M. Gilchrist
The Expressive Cost Of Corporate Immunity, Gregory M. Gilchrist
UC Law Journal
Is it possible to justify imposing criminal liability on corporations? Two basic aspects of criminal law have no application to corporations: Corporations cannot be jailed and they cannot form mental states. Moreover, there is reason to think that much of the deterrent effect generated by corporate criminal liability could be generated more efficiently by civil liability. Still, the demand for criminal prosecution of corporations remains high. This Article seeks to understand why we have corporate criminal liability, and it concludes that expressivism is necessary to justify the practice. Expressivism justifies punishment by reference to the benefits of a statement of …

Nullomer Derived Anticancer Peptides (Nullops): Differential Lethal Effects On Normal And Cancer Cells In Vitro, Abdelkrim Alileche, Jayita Goswami, William Bourland, Mike Davis, Greg Hampikian
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
We demonstrate the first use of the nullomer (absent sequences) approach to drug discovery and development. Nullomers are the shortest absent sequences determined in a species, or group of species. By identifying the shortest absent peptide sequences from the NCBI databases, we screened several potential anti-cancer peptides. In order to improve cell penetration and solubility we added short poly arginine tails (5Rs), and initially solubilized the peptides in1M trehalose. The results for one of the absent sequences 9R (RRRRRNWMWC), and its scrambled version 9S1R (RRRRRWCMNW) are reported here. We refer to these peptides derived from nullomers as PolyArgNulloPs. A control …

Evaluation Of Rubber Modified Porous Asphalt Mixtures, Kimberly Lyons
Evaluation Of Rubber Modified Porous Asphalt Mixtures, Kimberly Lyons
All Theses
A porous pavement is a type of sustainable pavement that allows stormwater to infiltrate through the pavement into the natural soil bed. Rubber modified binder is the combination of regular asphalt binder mixed with ground crumb rubber, which is derived from used rubber tires by shredding or grinding the tires into small fragments. This research investigated the effects of rubber modified binder on the performance properties of porous asphalt mixtures, which include draindown, porosity, permeability, abrasion resistance, moisture susceptibility, and rutting resistance.
The addition of cellulose fibers has been used to increase the optimum binder content of porous asphalt mix …
Analyzing The Health Insurance Provision For Young Adults Of The 2010 Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act In Its First Year Of Implementation, Andrew Roehl
All Theses
Since the 2010 Patent Protection and Affordable Care Act is so young, very little is known about the effects that the policies that it will put in place will have on our nation's health care system moving forward. Recent releases by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention allow for a thorough analysis of one of the first policies, the adult dependent coverage policy for people under the ages of 26, put into place by this piece of legislation in 2011. The economic models run in this paper look at the strengths and the weaknesses …
United States Military Cohesion After The Repeal Of “Don’T Ask, Don’T Tell”, Stephanie E.V. Brown
United States Military Cohesion After The Repeal Of “Don’T Ask, Don’T Tell”, Stephanie E.V. Brown
Honors Projects
The repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was projected by politicians and military personnel alike to have a negative impact on unit cohesion. The findings of this study indicated that overall military cohesion was high, and that many military members found that the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” had no impact on task or social cohesion. However, using the Chi Square test, there were two noted significant associations when observing participant pay grade and perceptions of how the repeal of DADT has affected a unit’s ability to work together to complete tasks get the job done (χ2 …

Updated Glacial Chronology Of The South Fork Hoh River Valley, Olympic Peninsula, Washington Through Detailed Stratigraphy And Osl Dating, Cianna E. Wyshnytzky, Tammy M. Rittenour, Glenn D. Thackray
Graduate Student Posters
Four glacial advances are preserved and exposed in the stratigraphy of the South Fork Hoh River valley. The oldest of these advances extended beyond the South Fork valley into the Hoh River valley. The three younger advances are preserved in the stratigraphy cut bank exposures in the valley and geomorphically by moraines and outwash plains. One of these advances represents a re-advance to the same terminal position of the previous advance and has not previously been recognized in this valley or other glaciated valleys in the western Olympic Mountains. This finding advocates for a detailed sedimentologic and stratigraphic approach to …

Top Athlete Pay, Kevin F. Hallock
Top Athlete Pay, Kevin F. Hallock
Economics Faculty Publications
The US has a history of discussing the pay of the relatively well-paid. This is partly because pay levels of some are revealed publicly (e.g., CEOs of publicly traded companies). Americans are also characterized as being celebrity-obsessed. So discussing the pay of superstars seems inevitable. However, they do not have quality data on the compensation of the relatively highly paid in many organizations and professions. When the author speaks about compensation in front of large groups, someone (and in many cases, many people) gets incensed over what they term "outrageous" or "egregious" levels of executive compensation. Athletes are rarely mentioned. …

Evans's 'The Turducken' And Chekhov's 'The Seagull', Brian R. Johnson
Russian Faculty Works
In his article "Evans's The Turducken and Chekhov's The Seagull" Brian R. Johnson approaches The Turducken as a travesty of The Seagull, examining six iconic scenes from The Seagull, in order to explore the satirical effect of the altered scenes. In December of 2008, Bedlam Theatre of Minneapolis presented The Turducken, "a holiday dinner theater spectacular inspired by Anton Chekhov's The Seagull." Playwright Josef Evans takes Chekhov's 1895 work and turns the classic piece into a musical and farcical satire. The plot of The Turducken follows the plot of The Seagull, and some scenes in The Turducken are recognizable as …

Fak Is A Critical Regulator Of Neuroblastoma Liver Metastasis, Sora Lee, Jingbo Qiao, Pritha Paul, Kathleen L. O'Connor, B. Mark Evers, Dai H. Chung
Surgery Faculty Publications
Neuroblastomas express increased levels of gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRP-R). However, the exact molecular mechanisms involved in GRP-R-mediated cell signaling in neuroblastoma growth and metastasis are unknown. Here, we report that focal adhesion kinase (FAK), as a critical downstream target of GRP-R, is an important regulator of neuroblastoma tumorigenicity. We found that FAK expression correlates with GRP-R expression in human neuroblastoma sections and cell lines. GRP-R overexpression in SK-N-SH cells increased FAK, integrin α3 and β1 expressions and cell migration. These cells demonstrated flatter cell morphology with broad lamellae, in which intense FAK expression was localized to the leading edges of …

Analysis Of Crime Data Using Principal Component Analysis: A Case Study Of Katsina State, Shehu U. Gulumbe, Dikko H. .G., Bello Yusuf
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper analyses Katsina State crime data which consists of the averages of eight major crimes reported to the police for the period 2006 – 2008. The crimes consist of robbery, auto theft, house and store breakings, theft/stealing, grievous hurt and wounding, murder, rape, and assault. Correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were employed to explain the correlation between the crimes and to determine the distribution of the crimes over the local government areas of the state. The result has shown a significant correlation between robbery, theft and vehicle theft. While MSW local government area has the lowest crime …
An Assessment Of Monetary Policy Response To Capital Inflows In Nigeria1, Usman M. Okpanachi
An Assessment Of Monetary Policy Response To Capital Inflows In Nigeria1, Usman M. Okpanachi
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
Large and persistent capital inflows can be a double-edged sword. Accompanying its many attractions is the tendency to display a boom and bust pattern (volatility and reversals) in addition to the possibility of causing rapid exchange rate appreciation, inflation and loss of monetary policy independence. These downside risks create very strong impetus for some sort of policy response like sterilization, fiscal consolidation or controls. This study employs a simple analytical framework to estimate the intensity (and effectiveness) of monetary sterilization by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in response to increased capital inflows in recent years. The study finds evidence …
Inflation And Economic Growth In Nigeria: Detecting The Threshold Level, Sani I. Doguwa
Inflation And Economic Growth In Nigeria: Detecting The Threshold Level, Sani I. Doguwa
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper re-examines the issue of the existence and the level of inflation threshold in the relationship between inflation and growth in Nigeria, using three different approaches that provide appropriate procedures for estimating the threshold level and inference. While Sarel’s (1996) approach provides a threshold point estimate of 9.9 per cent that was not well identified by the data, the technique of Khan and Senhadji (2001) identifies a 10.5 per cent inflation threshold as statistically significant to explain the inflation-growth nexus in Nigeria. Also, the approach of Drukker et al (2005) suggests a two threshold point model with 11.2 and …
