Analysis Of Alcohol Use Among Pregnant Women In San Luis Obispo County, Samantha Law Dec 2012

Analysis Of Alcohol Use Among Pregnant Women In San Luis Obispo County, Samantha Law

Statistics

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is harmful to the fetus, and can lead to serious alcohol related developmental birth defects. Utilizing prenatal screening, such as the 4P’s Plus© screening tool, during a woman’s first prenatal doctors visit can help educate women and reduce continued alcohol use during pregnancy. Currently the CDC reports that 1 in 13 women in the US drink alcohol while pregnant compared to local reports that 1 in 3 women in San Luis Obispo County continue to drink alcohol during pregnancy. A primary concern for many local county health care experts and organizations is to raise awareness that …

Inextricably Political: Race, Membership, And Tribal Sovereignty, Sarah Krakoff Dec 2012

Inextricably Political: Race, Membership, And Tribal Sovereignty, Sarah Krakoff

Washington Law Review

Courts address equal protection questions about the distinct legal treatment of American Indian tribes in the following dichotomous way: are classifications concerning American Indians “racial or political?” If the classification is political (i.e., based on federally recognized tribal status or membership in a federally recognized tribe) then courts will not subject it to heightened scrutiny. If the classification is racial rather than political, then courts may apply heightened scrutiny. This Article challenges the dichotomy itself. The legal categories “tribe” and “tribal member” are themselves political, and reflect the ways in which tribes and tribal members have been racialized by U.S. …

Host Selection And Parasite Infection In Aedes Taeniorhynchus, Endemic Disease Vector In The Galápagos Islands, Arnaud Bataille, Guillaume Fournié, Marilyn Cruz, Virna Cedeño, Patricia G. Parker, Andrew A. Cunningham, Simon J. Goodman Dec 2012

Host Selection And Parasite Infection In Aedes Taeniorhynchus, Endemic Disease Vector In The Galápagos Islands, Arnaud Bataille, Guillaume Fournié, Marilyn Cruz, Virna Cedeño, Patricia G. Parker, Andrew A. Cunningham, Simon J. Goodman

Biology Department Faculty Works

Host selection in blood-sucking arthropods has important evolutionary and ecological implications for the transmission dynamics, distribution and host-specificity of the parasites they transmit. The black salt-marsh mosquito (Aedes taeniorhynchus Wiedemann) is distributed throughout tropical to temperate coastal zones in the Americas, and continental populations are primarily mammalphilic. It is the only indigenous mosquito in the Galápagos Islands, having colonised the archipelago around 200,000. years ago, potentially adapting its host selection, and in the process, altering the dynamics of vector mediated pathogen interactions in the archipelago. Here, we use blood-meal analysis and PCR-based parasite screening approach to determine the blood-feeding patterns …

Flow Kinematics And Dynamics Controlling Tracer Movement And Shallow-Water Wave Propagation In The Hudson River, Jindong Wang Dec 2012

Flow Kinematics And Dynamics Controlling Tracer Movement And Shallow-Water Wave Propagation In The Hudson River, Jindong Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Analyses of ship borne ADCP, salinity and dye tracer data from a 2002 experiment in a reach of the lower Hudson Estuary emphasize the influence of bottom topography on halocline position within the water column and dye tracer movement relative to isohalines. Halocline slope and halocline position within the water column during both flood and ebb and their relationship to bottom topography and bottom friction are described in terms of both the quasi-steady two-layer frictional hydraulics and tidally generated internal waves. Hindcast simulations using ROMS for the same reach provide detailed description of 3D velocity field and salinity field to …

Regenerative Shock Absorbers For Energy Harvesting From Vehicle Suspensions, Zhongjie Li Dec 2012

Regenerative Shock Absorbers For Energy Harvesting From Vehicle Suspensions, Zhongjie Li

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

While the energy consumption around the world is keeping increasing, energy harvesting is more and more popular, especially in vehicle suspensions. The objective of this research is to design an electricity-harvesting shock absorber with high-power density and retrofittability to recover large amount of vibration energy traditionally dissipated in vehicle suspensions and to enhance vehicle dynamics for ride comfort and road safety at the same time. An introduction and overview of vehicle suspensions as well as regenerative shock absorbers is presented to help understand the motivation for the research. 100 to 400 Watts' energy is accessible in vehicle suspensions, which corresponds …

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Examination Of Fear Generalization And Anticipation Of Affective Stimuli, Tsafrir Greenberg Dec 2012

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Examination Of Fear Generalization And Anticipation Of Affective Stimuli, Tsafrir Greenberg

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Despite increasing interest in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) it remains one of the least studied anxiety disorders and little is known about its neurobiology. The aim of the current research study was to investigate the neural basis of GAD from two perspectives: fear generalization and anticipation of affective outcomes. Thirty-two women with GAD (17 with and 15 without comorbid major depression disorder) and 25 healthy women underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while completing two tasks: a fear generalization task in which participants were presented with a conditioned stimulus (CS) that co-terminates with a brief electric shock, and generalization stimuli …

Approximating Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes With Parametric Belief Distributions For Continuous State Spaces, Timothy Ryan Knapik Dec 2012

Approximating Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes With Parametric Belief Distributions For Continuous State Spaces, Timothy Ryan Knapik

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation focuses on training autonomous agents to plan and act under uncertainty, specifically for cases where the underlying state spaces are continuous in nature. Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) are a class of models aimed at training agents to seek high rewards or low costs while navigating a state space without knowing their true location. Information regarding an agent's location is gathered in the form of possibly nonlinear and noisy measurements as a function of the true location. An exactly solved POMDP allows an agent to optimally balance seeking rewards and seeking information regarding its position in state …

Study Of Lipid Raft Formation In Model Membranes And Cells, Priyadarshini Pathak Dec 2012

Study Of Lipid Raft Formation In Model Membranes And Cells, Priyadarshini Pathak

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ordered membrane domains, (conventionally called lipid rafts) are tightly packed sphingolipid and cholesterol rich domains, proposed to co-exist with disordered domains, in the plasma membrane. In spite of many cellular functions allotted to rafts, their direct detection in cells has been difficult. Rafts may be too small to detect and this could easily be misinterpreted as their absence. For this reason, the contention that in the absence of detergent Triton X-100 (commonly used to isolate rafts), domains may not exist in the lipid mixture resembling the plasma membrane, was investigated. A novel FRET pair variation assay in which, FRET pairs …

Investigation Of Factors That Control Droplet Formation In Microfluidic Cross-Junctions Using The Lattice Boltzmann Method, Jason Pellegrino Dec 2012

Investigation Of Factors That Control Droplet Formation In Microfluidic Cross-Junctions Using The Lattice Boltzmann Method, Jason Pellegrino

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Microfluidics could potentially provide a cheaper and more effective alternative to current industrial and laboratory fluid management techniques due to the large surface area-to-volume ratios; however, optimization of the flow conditions necessary for precise droplet generation is required for any segmented flow application. The Shan-Chen multicomponent multiphase Lattice Boltzmann method was used to simulate droplet formation conditions and provide insight about the conditions for different flow regimes like streaming, threading, and stable droplet generation. For the range of numerically stable flow conditions tested, the combined effects of the Capillary number and velocity ratio were demonstrated to be the process drivers …

The Rhetoric Of Revolution, Christopher Reimels Dec 2012

The Rhetoric Of Revolution, Christopher Reimels

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This paper examines the external and internal changes that occurred in the French language as a result of the French Revolution. In terms of external changes, it examines the perception and overall regulation of the language that resulted directly from the social and political upheaval of French society in the late eighteenth century. While most external changes that were attempted did not come to fruition during the Revolution itself, many aspects of the French language of the early twenty-first century can trace their heritage back to the ideals of the movement. Internally, changes were manifested primarily in the French lexicon, …

Pluralism, Democracy, And The `Empty Place Of Power': Using Lefort's Political Theory To Address The Problem Of Tolerance, Michael Roess Dec 2012

Pluralism, Democracy, And The `Empty Place Of Power': Using Lefort's Political Theory To Address The Problem Of Tolerance, Michael Roess

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Though widely adopted since the European wars of religion in the 16th and 17th centuries, liberal solutions to the problem of tolerance continue to face difficulties over issues, such as abortion and religious freedom, where deeply held values and matters of governance intersect. In this dissertation I provide a new argument for political tolerance that is supported by a Lefortian conception of democratic political legitimacy. In the first half of the dissertation I argue that two forms of liberalism, public reason liberalism and liberalism of conscience, fail to adequately address the difficulties posed by religious pluralism. In its Rawlsian form, …

Design And Analysis Of Structured Graph Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Jung Hun Ryu Dec 2012

Design And Analysis Of Structured Graph Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Jung Hun Ryu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In dense wireless sensor networks, a sensor node may have several neighbor nodes within radio range. In this case, efficient network design is more challenging than with sparse networks. Researches on efficient network design for dense networks are often based on random networks and include comprehensive network performance analysis. Random networks have many advantages for wireless sensor networks, such as short-distance radio range, flexibility for nodes to join or leave the network, and self-organization. However, there are also disadvantages inherent to random networks such as difficulty to guarantee global properties such as diameter and connectivity. On the other hand, there …

Whoever Doesn't Hop Must Be Superior: The Russian Left-Periphery And The Emergence Of Superiority, Tatiana Scott Dec 2012

Whoever Doesn't Hop Must Be Superior: The Russian Left-Periphery And The Emergence Of Superiority, Tatiana Scott

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation maps the left-periphery of the Russian language, presenting a new geometry of Russian main and subordinate clauses in order to account for a number of phenomena: single and multiple wh-constructions, sluicing constructions, and coordinate multiple wh-constructions (CMW), as well as to predict various occurring word-orders. Interestingly, the theory for these constructions comes from a proposed unique wh-unrelated category, the Higher Operator Phrase (HOP), located higher than CP, which allows the aforementioned phenomena to fall out of the proposed structure. The thesis claims that Russian exhibits `true' wh-movement and is similar to Bulgarian in Rudin's 1988 typology, with a …
