How Overcorrection Improves Behavior, Annie Katzman, Susan Carder, Molly Mcnamara
Applied Behavior Analysis (SPED 432) and Intervention Strategies for Literacy (SPED 431)
This poster introduces the practice of overcorrection. Overcorrection is a discipline strategy that can be used inside and outside of the classroom. It is used to decrease inappropriate behavior (e.g., running down the hallway, hitting another student, or destroying school property). There are different types of overcorrection that appear to be effective, such as positive practice, neutral practice, and restitutional practice. These have been implemented with positive results in the reduction of inappropriate behavior. Overall, overcorrection is a research based strategy, but care must be taken when a student is causing harm to himself or others.
Der Exilant Thomas Mann Und Die Frage Der Deutschen, Joseph Hammett
Der Exilant Thomas Mann Und Die Frage Der Deutschen, Joseph Hammett
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
With the National Socialists coming to power in Germany in 1933, ending the Weimar Republic, many artists and intellectuals were forced to leave Germany. One of the most influential of these German émigrés was Thomas Mann. While many of these émigrés lost their status and fell into oblivion in exile, Thomas Mann, because of his worldwide acclaim, came to be seen as a symbol for German culture in opposition to Nazi Germany and began a lecture series for the Library of Congress. In one of these lectures, “Germany and the Germans,” Mann discusses the extent and the origins of German …

Espacios Y El Papel De La Narrativa En La Tierra De Alvargonzález, Michael Todd Killian
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
The aim of this paper is to explore the complex relationship between literary and geographic spaces featured in Antonio Machado’s poetic and prose work, La tierra de Alvargonzález. My attention will be focused on how these spaces are defined, their limits, and ultimately how their synthesis and interaction is essential for the development and execution of the narrative. An understanding of the intricacies of literary and geographic spaces and their correlation sheds light on complex questions regarding the fundamental nature of narrative and its constituent elements.

La Fusione Tra La Scrittura E L’Arte Visiva: Adriano Spatola & La Poesia Visiva, Gina Mangravite
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
What is visual poetry? Is it categorized as literature or visual art? How does one interpret such a work? In this essay, I explore these fundamental questions through a case study of Italian poet, Adriano Spatola and his visual poetry, Zeroglifici. Similar to his visual poetry, Spatola himself tends to escape explicit classifications. Although he was a member of Group 63, in this essay I pose the question of whether Spatola and his works can truly be considered part of the neoavanguardia.
The Unending Cycle Of Political Violence In Haiti A Case Study Of The 1991 Coup D'Etat, Lourdes Eliacin Mars
The Unending Cycle Of Political Violence In Haiti A Case Study Of The 1991 Coup D'Etat, Lourdes Eliacin Mars
HIM 1990-2015
Deye mo-n se mo-n is a proverb in Haiti that roughly translates to "Beyond the mountains, more mountains." This saying holds a deep meaning to the Haitian peoples, who have lived through unrelenting violence and poverty. In its 200 years of independence, Haiti's inhabitants have seldom known a decade without political violence. Like the chain of mountains, political violence in Haiti seems to go on forever with no end in sight. Not only are the devastating effects of violence felt within politics, but also in the economic and social sectors of the country. The collapse of these sectors has created …

Frankenstein: A Seminal Work Of Modern Literature, Traci K. Damron
Frankenstein: A Seminal Work Of Modern Literature, Traci K. Damron
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Although Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus, published in 1818, is assigned to the Romantic period of literature, it surpasses her contemporaries by its complexity of themes, philosophies, and social commentary embedded deep within. This paper contends that the novel should be considered one of the seminal works of modernity by closely examining the following elements of Modern literature as they apply to Frankenstein: the beginnings of speculative fiction found within the novel, science vs. religion, dark aspects of the psyche, disenchantment with the world, and the isolation/emptiness of the individual. Additionally, Mary Shelley’s own life and the influences …

Digital Storytelling: Reinventing Literature Circles, Maryann Tatum Tobin
Faculty Articles
New literacies in reading research demand the study of comprehension skills using multiple modalities through a more complex, multi-platform view of reading. Taking into account the robust roll of technology in our daily lives, this article presents an update to the traditional literature circle lesson to include digital storytelling and multimedia. Digital Storytelling Circles (DSCs) support the idea of creating a “community of learners” who participate in purpose-driven engagement with text to create meaning. Digital storytelling as an activity is not new to English language arts classes, but this article discusses the versatility of digital storytelling and how DSCs provide …

Are All Management Earnings Forecasts Created Equal? Expectations Management Versus Communication, Yongtae Kim, Myung Seok Park
Are All Management Earnings Forecasts Created Equal? Expectations Management Versus Communication, Yongtae Kim, Myung Seok Park
Accounting
Recent studies associate management earnings forecasts (MEFs) with expectations management. These studies, however, neither provide evidence on the extent and scope of expectations management through MEFs nor consider alternative incentives for issuing MEFs. Consequently, existing evidence does not help regulators assess whether MEFs effectively facilitate communication with investors. We investigate to what extent managers exploit their earnings forecasts as a tool of expectations management or as a communication device. By examining relations among MEFs, analysts' forecasts, and actual earnings, we classify MEFs into three incentive categories: (1) expectations management, (2) communication, and (3) other incentives. We find that a significant …

L’Italiano: Il Passato E Il Presente, Matthew Hamilton
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
Through the rise and fall of empires, Italy and its people experienced many changes. The Apennine peninsula has been under the control and influence of many different cultures and kingdoms. One of the greatest impacts is in the language. Italian, as it is known around the world, has very diverse origins. The unified Italian language known as Italian standard introduced by Dante Alighieri, promoted by literature, supported by fascism and spread by newspapers, television and radio is much different than the numerous dialects spoken two hundred years ago. This essay describes the beginnings of the Italian language, but also investigates …

Jurek Beckers ,,Die Mauer”: Das Überwinden Von Mauern In Seinem Leben Und Werk, Tiffany Howard
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
In his short story, “The Wall,” Jurek Becker uses the narrative perspective of a five year old boy to discuss life in a Jewish ghetto during WWII. Becker has no memory of his own childhood as a five year old in the Lódz Ghetto; yet, wrote as if it could have been his own story. What Becker claims to know about his past is derived from; the experiences of survivors in East-Germany, the cultural memory of the Holocaust, and his father. Becker ironically incorporated a controversial term, “The Wall,” in his title and as the focus of this story. “The …

The assessment of student learning in general education courses is of critical importance in higher education. This study examines the utility of a writing assignment (application essays) in a basic communication course as an effective assessment tool. The authors conducted a content analysis of student portfolios to determine the extent to which application essays provide evidence of student learning in the basic course. The present study extends the findings from recent assessment efforts (Jones, Simonds, & Hunt, 2005) to explore types of mass media events students address in application essays and assess the revisions made to the assignment based on …

Tracking Plagiarism Electronically: First-Year Students’ Perceptions Of Academic Dishonesty And Reports Of Cheating Behaviour In The Basic Communication Course, Joseph P. Mazer, Stephen K. Hunt
Publications
This study explored how electronic submission of course material, intended to deter instances of plagiarism, influenced first-year students’ perceptions of academic dishonesty and reports of cheating behaviour in a large, multi-section basic communication course. Results reveal that electronic submission of course material results in first-year students being less likely to self-report engaging in cheating behaviours and heightens their appreciation and awareness of what constitutes academic dishonesty. Implications for classroom pedagogy, course management, and teacher training are discussed.

Reducing In-Stent Restenosis Through Novel Stent Flow Field Augmentation, Eoin Murphy, Fergal Boyle
Reducing In-Stent Restenosis Through Novel Stent Flow Field Augmentation, Eoin Murphy, Fergal Boyle
Articles
In-stent restenosis (ISR), manifested as a re-narrowing of the arterial lumen post-implantation of a stent, is a detrimental limitation of stent technology. Understanding and consequently devising ways of reducing the frequency of ISR has been a continuing goal of research into improved stent designs. The biological processes that can lead to ISR have been found to be partially flow dependent with the local hemodynamics at the arterial wall of crucial importance. This paper investigates these biological processes and their instigating factors. Furthermore, the history and theory behind three stent technologies which endeavour to reduce ISR rates through stent flow field …
Required Features Of A Virtual Classroom Tool For Use In Higher Education, Arnold Hensman
Required Features Of A Virtual Classroom Tool For Use In Higher Education, Arnold Hensman
Articles
The integration of virtual-classroom systems into the arsenal of e-learning tools represents a major evolution in the landscape of modern distance education. For many courses, standard virtual learning environments (VLEs) provide only a foundation upon which to base a distance learning programme. However, synchronous live online-teaching software such as Microsoft Office Communicator and Adobe Connect allow educators to simulate a real-time classroom environment over the internet like never before. Since these tools are being used more and more within higher education, questions must be asked about how effective they ultimately can be in meeting student learning requirements. More importantly, what …

Location-dependent queries of geospatial data are indispensable for users in today's era of "Smart" environments. At general scales, Google Maps and Google Earth with satellite and street views have provided some utilities for users to query specific locations. However, at local scales, where detailed 3D geometries and linked business data are needed, there is a general lack of related information for in depth exploration of an area. For instance, the following kinds of questions cannot be answered when interacting with Google Maps/Earth on a typical university campus: what classes are scheduled in that room over there? Whose office window is …

The challenges for academics in meeting the learning requirements of students are many and varied. This research focuses on the concept of personalised learning, where activities are specifically selected to suit the learning requirements of individual students. The creation of personalised learning activities to suit every student’s learning needs, are not easily achieved. A survey was conducted in June 2012 to determine academics awareness of, and views on, the ‘novel teaching approach’ of personalised e-learning in higher education. Forty academics participated in this study. 60% of academic respondents agreed with the statement: “There is a need to personalise e-learning to …
An Evaluation Of Fairness Among Heterogeneous Tcp Variants Over 10gbps High-Speed Networks, Lin Xue, Suman Kumary, Cheng Cui, Seung Jong Park
An Evaluation Of Fairness Among Heterogeneous Tcp Variants Over 10gbps High-Speed Networks, Lin Xue, Suman Kumary, Cheng Cui, Seung Jong Park
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Several high-speed TCP variants are adopted by end users and therefore, heterogeneous congestion control has become the characteristic of newly emerging high-speed networks. In contrast to homogeneous TCP flows, fairness among heterogeneous TCP flows now depends on router parameters such as queue management scheme, buffer size, etc. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first evaluation of fairness among heterogeneous TCP variants over 10Gbps high-speed networks. Our evaluation scenarios for heterogeneous TCP flows consist of TCP variants with substantial presence in current Internet; therefore, TCP-SACK, CUBIC and HSTCP compete for bottleneck bandwidth. Experimental results for fairness are presented …

The article discusses the case Wal-Mart Stores Inc. v. Dukes, in which the U.S. Supreme denied class action certification in its ruling. It informs that the decision of Supreme Court was opposed by some people in liberal circles, also including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It presents information that the Justice agreed to a point that a class action certification is not possible under the Federal Rule of Civil procedure 23 (b) (2), which governs class actions in which injunctive relief.

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
In this paper, we describe a novel approach to corporate involvement in on-farm assessment, driven by the desire to provide a service for dairy producers and to create a vehicle for engagement on issues of dairy cow welfare. This program provides producers with feedback on animal-based (including gait score, leg injuries, and lying time) and facility-based (including freestall design, bedding practices, feed bunk design and management, and stocking density) measures that can be used to better address their management goals. The aim of this paper is to describe variation in the prevalence of lameness and leg injuries, lying behavior, facility …
