Service Learning: Engagement And Academic Achievement Of Second Language Acquisition Students In An Advanced Grammar Course While Participating In Service Learning Activities, Sara T. Ulloa Dec 2012

Service Learning: Engagement And Academic Achievement Of Second Language Acquisition Students In An Advanced Grammar Course While Participating In Service Learning Activities, Sara T. Ulloa

Theses and Dissertations

Service learning has been proposed as a way to create a meaningful environment for the language acquisition process (Weldon & Trautmann, 2003). As a pedagogical tool for second language acquisition the greatest benefit of utilizing service learning activities is that it creates connections to the target language community and provides authentic experiences for target language use (Long, 2003; Morris, 2001). However, there is no detailed record of how service learning actually impacts language and culture acquisition (Bloom, 2008). This multiple case study describes the ways in which four advanced Spanish learners engaged with service learning and the influence of this …

Risks & Rewards: Understanding Management Influences On Employee Engagement & Well-Being During Management Transitions, Dale E. Hartz Dec 2012

Risks & Rewards: Understanding Management Influences On Employee Engagement & Well-Being During Management Transitions, Dale E. Hartz

Student Scholarship

In spite of enormous changes occurring routinely within organizations and the resulting movement of managers, there is only limited research on management transitions and even less research on the effects the transitions have on those being managed. Because of its potential to be a factor in organizational performance and competitiveness, employee engagement and well-being, has recently been receiving significant attention both in the practitioner and academic worlds. However, there is a dearth of research available on what occurs with employee engagement and well-being during management transitions. Our findings effectively illustrate the various states that employees function in during management transitions …

Do Exclusionary Rules Convict The Innocent?, Dhammika Dharmapala, Nuno Garoupa, Richard H. Mcadams Dec 2012

Do Exclusionary Rules Convict The Innocent?, Dhammika Dharmapala, Nuno Garoupa, Richard H. Mcadams

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Rules excluding various kinds of evidence from criminal trials play a prominent role in criminal procedure, and have generated considerable controversy. In this paper, we address the general topic of excluding factually relevant evidence, that is, the kind of evidence that would rationally influence the jury's verdict if it were admitted. We do not offer a comprehensive analysis of these exclusionary rules, but add to the existing literature by identifying a new domain for economic analysis, focusing on how juries respond to the existence of such a rule. We show that the impact of exclusionary rules on the likelihood of …

Model Development And Application Of Molecular Simulations For The Study Of Proton Transport In Bulk Water And For The Prediction Of Dipole Moments Of Organic Compounds, Abhishek Asthana Dec 2012

Model Development And Application Of Molecular Simulations For The Study Of Proton Transport In Bulk Water And For The Prediction Of Dipole Moments Of Organic Compounds, Abhishek Asthana

Theses and Dissertations

The present work demonstrates the application of molecular simulations (MD) in two different areas: proton transport in bulk water and estimation of the dipole moment of polar organic compounds. In both areas, relatively few successful and robust methodologies exist. In the first part, a new polarizable water model is developed for MD simulations of the proton transport process. The model was parametrized from a combination of quantum chemical calculations and experimental water properties. The model was implemented in MD simulation studies of liquid water at room temperature, as well as with excess protons. For pure water the model gave good …

Mathematics Teacher Time Allocation, Ashley Martin Jones Dec 2012

Mathematics Teacher Time Allocation, Ashley Martin Jones

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted in order to determine how mathematics teachers allocate their time in the classroom and the factors that influence teacher priorities in that time allocation. Research has indicated that math teachers may choose not to do certain activities in their classroom because of the amount of time that they take, but other underlying reasons may exist. In order to study this idea, six math teachers were interviewed on their current time allocation and rationale for that allocation, and the results from these interviews were used to create a survey that was sent to 581 math teachers in …

Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek Dec 2012

Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek

Honors Theses

In the next few years, many teachers will be challenged in new ways. Student engagement will be at a premium and state standards will be more specific, shifting their focus towards college readiness, integration of curriculum, and developing sound reasoning and critical thinking skills. While the education field is accustomed to adapting and adjusting “on the go”, it may be ill-prepared for this fresh round of changes. Teachers and curriculum directors need resources to help them adapt the classrooms to reflect the more comprehensive design implied by the new standards (Next Generation Science Standards, 2012). This paper promotes a spiral …

The History And Evolution Of Athletic Uniforms And Equipment 1800s - Present: Basketball, Baseball, Football, And Hockey, Emily Anderson

Honors Theses

For my Lee Honors College Thesis at Western Michigan University, I researched the history and evolution of athletic uniforms and equipment. I choose this topic because not only does it relate to my major in Textile & Apparel Studies, it also appealed to me, a lifelong sports fan. I utilized various resources while conducting my research. These resources included books as well as communication with the curator at the WMU Archives and Regional History Collections. I was also in direct contact with the equipment directors for various WMU athletic teams. I presented all of my findings in an exhibit format …

A Comparison Of Customised And Prefabricated Insoles To Reduce Risk Factors For Neuropathic Diabetic Foot Ulceration: A Participant-Blinded Randomised Controlled Trial., Joanne S. Paton, Elizabeth A. Stenhouse, Graham Bruce, Daniel Zahra, Ray B. Jones Dec 2012

A Comparison Of Customised And Prefabricated Insoles To Reduce Risk Factors For Neuropathic Diabetic Foot Ulceration: A Participant-Blinded Randomised Controlled Trial., Joanne S. Paton, Elizabeth A. Stenhouse, Graham Bruce, Daniel Zahra, Ray B. Jones

School of Health Professions

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic diabetic foot ulceration may be prevented if the mechanical stress transmitted to the plantar tissues is reduced. Insole therapy is one practical method commonly used to reduce plantar loads and ulceration risk. The type of insole best suited to achieve this is unknown. This trial compared custom-made functional insoles with prefabricated insoles to reduce risk factors for ulceration of neuropathic diabetic feet. METHOD: A participant-blinded randomised controlled trial recruited 119 neuropathic participants with diabetes who were randomly allocated to custom-made functional or prefabricated insoles. Data were collected at issue and six month follow-up using the F-scan in-shoe pressure …
