College Of Engineering Senior Design Competition Fall 2012, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas Dec 2012

College Of Engineering Senior Design Competition Fall 2012, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas

Fred and Harriet Cox Senior Design Competition Projects

Senior Design Experience

Part of every UNLV engineering student's academic experience, the Senior Design project stimulates engineering innovation and entrepreneurship. Each student in their senior year chooses, plans, designs and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. Working in teams, the senior design project encourages students to use everything learned in the engineering and computer design programs to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge.

Beyond the classroom ...

Because of the requirement to work in teams, students also build good communication skills, presentation skills and even business writing skills. They also have to …

Microrna Mir-155 Affects Antiviral Effector And Effector Memory Cd8 T Cell Differentiation, Ching-Yi Tsai, S. Rameeza Allie, Weijun Zhang, Edward J. Usherwood Dec 2012

Microrna Mir-155 Affects Antiviral Effector And Effector Memory Cd8 T Cell Differentiation, Ching-Yi Tsai, S. Rameeza Allie, Weijun Zhang, Edward J. Usherwood

Dartmouth Scholarship

MicroRNAs are key regulators of the immune response, but their role in CD8 T cell differentiation in vivo is not known. We show that miR-155 is important in both effector and memory antiviral CD8 T cell responses. Without miR-155, there was a weaker effector response and a skewing toward memory precursor cells. At the memory stage, miR-155-deficient CD8 T cells preferentially differentiated into central memory cells and were capable of mounting a potent secondary response.

Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells In Murine Retrovirus-Induced Aids Inhibit T- And B-Cell Responses In Vitro That Are Used To Define The Immunodeficiency, Kathy A. Green, W. James Cook, William R. Green Dec 2012

Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells In Murine Retrovirus-Induced Aids Inhibit T- And B-Cell Responses In Vitro That Are Used To Define The Immunodeficiency, Kathy A. Green, W. James Cook, William R. Green

Dartmouth Scholarship

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) have been characterized in several disease settings, especially in many tumor systems. Compared to their involvement in tumor microenvironments, however, MDSCs have been less well studied in their responses to infectious disease processes, in particular to retroviruses that induce immunodeficiency. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the development of a highly immunosuppressive MDSC population that is dependent on infection by the LP-BM5 retrovirus, which causes murine acquired immunodeficiency. These MDSCs express a cell surface marker signature (CD11b Gr-1 Ly6C ) characteristic of monocyte-type MDSCs. Such MDSCs profoundly inhibit immune responsiveness by a cell dose- and …

Newly Revealed Diversity Of Green Microalgae From Wilderness Areas Of Joshua Tree National Park (Jtnp), Valerie R. Flechtner, Nicole Pietrasiak, Louise A. Lewis Dec 2012

Newly Revealed Diversity Of Green Microalgae From Wilderness Areas Of Joshua Tree National Park (Jtnp), Valerie R. Flechtner, Nicole Pietrasiak, Louise A. Lewis

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

Documentation of the biodiversity of eukaryotic algae from desert systems is sparse. Our objective was to characterize microalgae from soil samples collected throughout Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA. Morphological, life-cycle, and DNA sequence data were collected for 100 microalgal isolates distributed over 18 sites in Joshua Tree National Park. Phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rDNA data separated the green algae into 15 major clades—10 in the class Chlorophyceae and 5 in the class Trebouxiophyceae—containing 2 or more lineages plus 9 lineages represented by a single isolate. Five isolates belonging to the class Xanthophyceae and 2 isolates belonging to Eustigmatophyceae …

Transcendence, James Klinke

Theses and Dissertations

Artist Statement I have often created art with an organic quality because I have felt bound by the earth’s natural elements and forces. These extend to and influence my human qualities which influence my artwork. My paintings and mixed media works symbolize the issues and defects that affect me in various ways and represent my attempt at overcoming them. At its core, my body of work addresses psychological and emotional recovery work. I have been burdened for a long period of time with anxiety, various character defects, and difficulties but I find catharsis through creative expression. Because I have chosen …

Surreal Numbers, Joshua Hostetler Dec 2012

Surreal Numbers, Joshua Hostetler

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the Surreal Numbers from an elementary, con- structivist point of view, with the intention of introducing the numbers in a palatable way for a broad audience with minimal background in any specific mathematical field. Created from two recursive definitions, the Surreal Numbers form a class that contains a copy of the real numbers, transfinite ordinals, and infinitesimals, combinations of these, and in- finitely many numbers uniquely Surreal. Together with two binary operations, the surreal numbers form a field. The existence of the Surreal Numbers is proven, and the class is constructed from …
