"If we could run the Zapruder film in reverse, patch up the president’s gruesome head wound, send the bullets flying back to the chambers whence they came, return the assassins to their sinister underworld and back up the Lincoln convertible so that Jack and Jackie are once again waving to the crowds in the Texas sunshine, then we could also walk backwards through the last 30 years, becoming younger and more hopeful, forgetting tragedies one after the other, arriving finally at a point of innocent stasis where we can stand forever watching the American sunrise with immortal delight. But we …

Nebraska Livestock Development Policy: The Road Not Taken, J. David Aiken
Nebraska Livestock Development Policy: The Road Not Taken, J. David Aiken
Cornhusker Economics
For over a decade, Nebraska has been engaged in a civil war between proponents of additional livestock production and opponents who see large livestock facilities as threats to smaller producers, communities and the environment. Major issues have included corporate farming requirements, county livestock zoning, municipal livestock regulation, water quality contamination and livestock odors. County livestock zoning regulations remain a significant battleground. Livestock proponents would like to implement a system like Iowa’s, where counties cannot zone livestock facilities and state environmental regulations establish only minimal animal feeding operation (AFO) setback requirements (3,000 foot maximum or 0.5682 mile).

Background The proportion of births attended by skilled health personnel is one of two indicators used to measure progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5, which aims for a 75% reduction in global maternal mortality ratios by 2015. Rwanda has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the world, estimated between 249–584 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. The objectives of this study were to quantify secular trends in health facility delivery and to identify factors that affect the uptake of intrapartum healthcare services among women living in rural villages in Bugesera District, Eastern Province, Rwanda.

Role Of Epidermal Growth Factor-Triggered Pi3k/Akt Signaling In The Migration Of Medulloblastoma-Derived Cells, Veronica Dudu, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Rotari, Qingjun Kong, Maribel Vazquez
Role Of Epidermal Growth Factor-Triggered Pi3k/Akt Signaling In The Migration Of Medulloblastoma-Derived Cells, Veronica Dudu, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Rotari, Qingjun Kong, Maribel Vazquez
Publications and Research
Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common brain cancer diagnosed among children. The cellular pathways that regulate MB invasion in response to environmental cues remain incompletely understood. Herein, we examine the migratory response of human MB-derived Daoy cells to different concentration profiles of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) using a microfluidic system. Our findings provide the first quantitative evidence that EGF concentration gradients modulate the chemotaxis of MB-derived cells in a dose-dependent manner via the EGF receptor (EGF-R). Data illustrates that higher concentration gradients caused increased number of cells to migrate. In addition, our results show that EGF-induced receptor phosphorylation triggered the …

Climate Change: Hope, Despair, And Planning, Ethan Seltzer
Climate Change: Hope, Despair, And Planning, Ethan Seltzer
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose for this paper: How can I engage students in thinking about climate change as a planning issue without glossing over or disregarding their growing skepticism about their own futures? This paper is not so much about how I teach, or how I could teach. Rather, it is more conceptual with respect to planning itself. More to the point: how does planning fit into this emerging, and dark, worldview? Planning, after all, is a discipline steeped in hope, and climate change seems to be bringing forth, at least for some, a palpable wave of despair. This is a direct …

The Effect Of A Three Set Tennis Match On Knee Kinematics And Leg Muscle Activation During The Tennis Serve, Brad Fenter
The Effect Of A Three Set Tennis Match On Knee Kinematics And Leg Muscle Activation During The Tennis Serve, Brad Fenter
Health and Kinesiology Theses
Tennis matches can be long, physically challenging affairs. Matches are often determined by the serving proficiency of the players. The serve has been extensively studied, but the relationship between the serve and match length regarding knee kinematics and leg muscle activation is not well documented in a real time environment. The purpose of the current study was to determine the effect a three-set tennis match had on knee kinematics and muscle activation of quadriceps and hamstrings during the serve. Ten male collegiate tennis players (age: 19.6±1.7) were recruited from The University of Texas at Tyler. All participants played a three-set …
The Role Of Megalin In The Transport Of Aminoglycosides Across Human Placenta, Amal Akour
The Role Of Megalin In The Transport Of Aminoglycosides Across Human Placenta, Amal Akour
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Intra-amniotic infections (IAIs) are common complications of labor and delivery. If inadequately treated, these infections can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in the mother and the fetus. Intrapartum aminoglycoside (AG) administration is recommended for the management of IAIs. AGs are known to cross the placenta and achieve bactericidal concentrations in fetal serum. However, the highest and most persistent fetal levels are achieved in renal tissue. So, the fetus may be vulnerable to the nephrotoxic effects of AGs. Megalin, a 600 kDaendocytic receptor, is responsible for the uptake of AGs into renal proximal tubular epithelial cells. This receptor is …
Tuning Parameter Selection In L1 Regularized Logistic Regression, Shujing Shi
Tuning Parameter Selection In L1 Regularized Logistic Regression, Shujing Shi
Theses and Dissertations
Variable selection is an important topic in regression analysis and is intended to select the best subset of predictors. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) was introduced by Tibshirani in 1996. This method can serve as a tool for variable selection because it shrinks some coefficients to exact zero by a constraint on the sum of absolute values of regression coefficients. For logistic regression, Lasso modifies the traditional parameter estimation method, maximum log likelihood, by adding the L1 norm of the parameters to the negative log likelihood function, so it turns a maximization problem into a minimization one. To …

Predicting The Wear Of High Speed Rocket Sleds, Lauren B. Wuertemberger
Predicting The Wear Of High Speed Rocket Sleds, Lauren B. Wuertemberger
Theses and Dissertations
Holloman Air Force Base houses the 10 mile long Holloman High Speed Test Track (HHSTT) in New Mexico and can run hypersonic experiments at speeds up to 10,000m/s. Tested objects are loaded onto sleds, which are connected to the track by slippers that slide along the rails. The payload sled is propelled down the track by a series of rocket sleds. The ability to predict the wear that will occur on the slippers during these experiments is important for slipper design and preventing catastrophic failure. However, high speeds complicate wear prediction as there additional contributing factors, including inconsistent surface contact, …
Energy Performance And Cost Analysis Of Phase Change Materials With Different Melting Temperature In Heating Systems / Mehdi Rezaei, Rezaei Mehdi
Student Works (2010-2019)
Usage of thermal energy storage (TES) for storing energy is a favorable technology which is used in current years. It improved extremely during previous years by application of phase change materials (PCMs). One of the major applications of the storage is heating and cooling in the buildings. The normal TES for application in buildings is water which is used in the heating system but recently PCM technology improvement helpd to use different types of PCMs for increasing energy and exergy efficiency of TES system. In some researches the energetic and exergetic analyses of systems which work with PCMs in fixed …
