Analytical Representations For Frequency Dependences Of Microwave Permeability, Konstantin N. Rozanov, Marina Koledintseva Dec 2012

Analytical Representations For Frequency Dependences Of Microwave Permeability, Konstantin N. Rozanov, Marina Koledintseva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic materials applied to solve various EMC and EMI problems require adequate analytical description of their RF and microwave material parameters. This is necessary for numerical optimization of wideband electromagnetic performance of devices incorporating these materials. The paper discusses the shape of frequency dependences of microwave permeability in homogeneous materials and composites. The Lorentzian frequency dispersion law is shown to allow for rather accurate description of all types of magnetic loss peaks, including those related to the ferromagnetic resonance and the effect of eddy currents. To model wideband electromagnetic performance of composites, mixing laws are typically used. The problem is …

Iktomi: A Character Traits Analysis Of A Dakota Culture Myth, Marianne Sue Kastner

Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative study comparing three separate English-language versions of a single Dakota cultural myth "Iktomi" presents a novel systematic approach for analyzing Native American folk tales to understand how stories function as tools of transmission of cultural information and knowledge. The method involved coding character traits according to type with regard to representation, ability, or attribute to ascertain patterns among the codes and elucidate character roles and relationships, reorganizing the coded traits into paired polarized correspondences to clarify relationships among traits, and assessing pronoun use and documenter effect pointing to gender-specific character activity. Findings revealed an encoded framework illuminating how …

Information Theoretic Approaches Towards Regulatory Network Inference, Vijender Chaitankar Dec 2012

Information Theoretic Approaches Towards Regulatory Network Inference, Vijender Chaitankar

Theses and Dissertations

In spite of many efforts in the past, inference or reverse engineering of regulatory networks from microarray data remains an unsolved problem in the area of systems biology. Such regulatory networks play a critical role in cellular function and organization and are of interest in the study of a variety of disease areas and ecotoxicology to name a few. This dissertation proposes information theoretic methods/algorithms for inferring regulatory networks from microarray data. Most of the algorithms proposed in this dissertation can be implemented both on time series and multifactorial microarray data sets. The work proposed here infers regulatory networks considering …

Building Group Resilience: A Three-Day Curriculum, Andrew Willis Garcés Dec 2012

Building Group Resilience: A Three-Day Curriculum, Andrew Willis Garcés

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Social change organizations are often exposed to stress and disruptive, potentially traumatic events. Despite this, few such groups invest time into actively cultivating resilience practices. Likewise, most existing resilience promotion initiatives are designed for use with individuals, not organizations, and lack the experience-based pedagogical approach necessary to interest many social change activists. This curriculum intervention provides a needed bridge between social change activism and resilience promotion theory. Designed as a three-day workshop, it can be used with entire organizations to support both self-awareness of their existing strengths and the development of new protective measures to boost collective resilience.

Hong Kong Happiness Index Survey 2012, Lok Sang Ho

Hong Kong Happiness Index 香港快樂指數調查

The “Hong Kong Happiness Index Survey 2012” indicates a slight slip of Hong Kong people’s happiness index to 70.5, from 71.3 last year on a scale of 0-100. As before, females continue to command a premium over males in happiness, and older people tend to be happier.

Both work pressures, particularly excessively long hours, and financial pressures are important causes of unhappiness among Hong Kong people. According to the survey results, low-income families are generally less happy than those better off. The lowest happiness score, at 66.9, however, goes to the sandwich class with monthly income from HK$30,000-39,999 per month. …

Two support structure geometries for the low stress silicon nitride X-ray windows are used. X-ray windows with thicknesses of 100 nm and 200 nm are suspended on …

Characterization Of Sterile Tassel Silky Earl: A Homeotic B-Class Gene Involved In Specification Of Floral Organ Identity In Zea Mays, Steven Keith Williams Dec 2012

Characterization Of Sterile Tassel Silky Earl: A Homeotic B-Class Gene Involved In Specification Of Floral Organ Identity In Zea Mays, Steven Keith Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Specification of floral organ identity in angiosperm flowers is accomplished by the coordinated activity of A-, B-, C-, and E-class MADS-box genes. In the eudicots, B-class genes specify petal and stamen identity. This eudicot B-class function depends on the simultaneous expression of genes from two paralogous B-class lineages (the DEFICIENS/APETALA3 lineage and the GLOBOSA/PISTILLATA lineage). Proteins produced by genes from these two lineages interact as obligate heterodimers and together regulate the transcription of various downstream targets. These obligate heterodimers also positively regulate the transcription of the B-class genes themselves, thereby mediating a unique B-class autoregulatory feedback loop. There is compelling …

In Search Of Real Fathers: Plenzdorf's Die Neuen Leiden Des Jungen W. And Vater, Mutter, Mörderkind, Michelle Schwoebel

Theses and Dissertations

Plenzdorf's works, one written before the fall of socialism in the German Democratic Republic (hereafter referred to as the DDR), and one after, portray relationships between fathers and sons, which act as a metaphor to express a personal perspective of the state, revealing that the DDR was neither as repressive or as omnipresent for the average citizen as outsiders are often given to believe. The father, or Übervater, a figure deeply rooted in the German consciousness, is represented by the state and proves itself as an entity which gives the protagonists in both works little notice, despite their best efforts …

Austro-American Reflections: Making The Writings Of Ann Tizia Leitich Accessible To English-Speaking Audiences, Stephen Andrew Simon Dec 2012

Austro-American Reflections: Making The Writings Of Ann Tizia Leitich Accessible To English-Speaking Audiences, Stephen Andrew Simon

Theses and Dissertations

Ann Tizia Leitich wrote about America to a Viennese audience as a foreign correspondent with the unique and personal perspective of an immigrant to the United States. Leitich differentiates herself from other Europeans who reported on America in her day by telling of the life of the average working American. In so doing, Leitich uses her work as a foreign correspondent to create a new identity for Austria between the World Wars. Leitich uses America in the 1920's and 1930's as a cultural mirror in which the new Republic of Austria can see itself. Leitich's perspective of America is not …

Speed-Up Of Peec Em/Ckt Solver Using Rank-Reduced Waveform Relaxation, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli Dec 2012

Speed-Up Of Peec Em/Ckt Solver Using Rank-Reduced Waveform Relaxation, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The solution of EM/Circuit problems is important for the EMC/SI/PI system designs. an essential issue today is the solution of larger problems without excessive memory and compute time requirements. in this paper, we show the potential for a new speed-up approach using the PEEC method. One source of the speed-up is due to the use of the waveform relaxation (WR) technique, which is very suitable for parallel processing. Importantly, the dense part of the partial inductance and potential matrices are sparsified by taking advantage of the rank deficiency of the dense parts of the MNA matrix. We show that both …

Crystal Structures And Kinetics Of Monofunctional Proline Dehydrogenase Provide Insight Into Substrate Recognition And Conformational Changes Associated With Flavin Reduction And Product Release, Min Luo, Benjamin W. Arentson, Dhiraj Srivastava, Donald F. Becker, John J. Tanner

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Proline dehydrogenase catalyzes the FAD-dependent oxidation of proline to Δ1- pyrroline-5- carboxylate, which is the first step of proline catabolism. Here, we report the structures of proline dehydrogenase from Deinococcus radiodurans in the oxidized state complexed with the proline analog L-tetrahydrofuroic acid and in the reduced state with the proline site vacant. The analog binds against the si face of the FAD isoalloxazine and is protected from bulk solvent by the α8 helix and the β1-α1 loop. The FAD ribityl chain adopts two conformations in the E-S complex, which is unprecedented for flavoenzymes. One of the conformations is novel for …

The article attempts to present key elements of macroprudential policy framework of the state. The objective of macroprudential policy is to maintain financial stability, with the main focus on financial sector. This goal may be achieved by reducing the systemic risk. Analysis of systemic risk should be carried out from two distinct perspectives – time dimension and cross-section dimension. Measurement, assessment and monitoring of systemic risk may be conducted with the use of risk warnings as well as statistical tools. Macroprudential instruments aimed at limitation of systemic risk include tools traditionally used for microprudential purposes and newly invented measures. The …
