SH2 domains are long known prominent players in the field of phosphotyrosine recognition within signaling protein networks. However, over the years they have been joined by an increasing number of other protein domain families that can, at least with some of their members, also recognise pTyr residues in a sequence-specific context. This superfamily of pTyr recognition modules, which includes substantial fractions of the PTB domains, as well as much smaller, or even single member fractions like the HYB domain, the PKC and PKC C2 domains and RKIP, represents a fascinating, medically relevant and hence intensely studied part of the cellular …

Expansin Synergy With Cellulases: Development Of A Transgenic Maize System For Expansin Production And Evaluation Of Synergistic Activity On Lignocellulosic Substrates, Sangwoong Yoon

One of the greatest barriers to produce biofuels from lignocellulosic material is efficient cellulose depolymerization by cellulase activity. Expansin is a protein that is active in cell wall expansion in growing regions of most plants. Because of this unique activity, expansin synergistic activity with cellulase is believed to lower the depolymerization barrier. Over-expression of expansin in the maize production system is designed to produce sufficient protein 1) to study its physiological effects, and 2) to assess its ability to serve as an industrial enzyme for applications, particularly in biomass conversion. Returns To Schooling: A Quantile Regression, Arman Oganisian
Economics Student Scholarship
This paper contributes to the large body of economic literature that attempts to estimate the returns to schooling. It uses quantile regression to estimate the effect of an additional year of education on monthly wage for earners in different quantiles. Using data from the young men’s cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey, the paper attempts to control for ability, family background, geography, and race, and finds that the returns to schooling is approximately 3.49% for men. Furthermore, the paper finds that while the effect of education on earnings is not significantly different from quantile to quantile, the significance of education …

Background Malaria causes over one million deaths annually, posing an enormous health and economic burden in endemic regions. The completion of genome sequencing of the causative agents, a group of parasites in the genus Plasmodium, revealed potential drug and vaccine candidates. However, genomics-driven target discovery has been significantly hampered by our limited knowledge of the cellular networks associated with parasite development and pathogenesis. In this paper, we propose an approach based on aligning neighborhood PPI subnetworks across species to identify network components in the malaria parasite P. falciparum. A Qualitative Inquiry Of The Counseling Dissertation Process, Stephen V. Flynn, Christine Chasek, Irene F. Harper, Katherine M. Murphy, Maribeth F. Jorgensen

The authors in this consensual qualitative research study explored the dissertation experiences of 42 graduates (27 counselor educators, 13 counselors, 2 administrators) from 4 midwestern states. Identified domains included impact of environment, competing influences, personality traits, chair influence, committee function, and barriers to completion. An emergent theory reflected the interconnectedness of the dissertation process across internal, relational, and professional factors. Implications related to motivation, personal traits, and identification of barriers in the dissertation process are provided.

We have investigated the influence of native oxides on ion-sputtering-induced nanostructure formation on GaSb using in situ low energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEISS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Comparing an oxygen-free sample with a native oxide sample, LEISS and XPS reveal the effect of oxygen in generating higher surface Ga fractions during early stages (fluences of 1 x 10(15)-1 x 10(16) cm(-2)) of low energy (< 100 eV) Ar+ irradiation. Enhanced surface Ga and Ga2O3 fractions were also observed on "oxide free" samples exposed to air following irradiation. The results suggest preferential Ga oxidation and segregation on the top of the amorphous layer if oxygen is present on the surface. In addition, the native oxide also increases the fluence threshold for nanopatterning of GaSb surfaces by almost a factor of four during low energy irradiation. In this study, we have investigated the global impact of heterogeneous nuclear Ribonuclear Protein (hnRNP) H/F-mediated regulation of splicing events and gene expression in oligodendrocytes. We have performed a genome-wide transcriptomic analysis at the gene and exon levels in Oli-neu cells treated with siRNA that targets hnRNPH/F compared to untreated cells using Affymetrix Exon Array. Gene expression levels and regulated exons were identified with the GenoSplice EASANA algorithm. Bioinformatics analyses were performed to determine the structural properties of G tracts that correlate with the function of hnRNPH/F as enhancers vs. repressors of exon inclusion. This paper investigates two stage-by-stage start-up schemes for a three-stage solid state transformer (SST) that includes a high frequency transformer. the DC-DC converter transformer current dynamics analysis presented in this paper shows that the stage-by-stage start-up scheme may lead to a relatively large transformer current. as a result, the DC-DC converter would suffer a relatively large input inrush current. the pre-charge start-up scheme can improve the transformer current profile during the transient. the detailed analysis of those two-start-up scheme is presented and the experimental verification on laboratory prototype proved the analysis of stage-by-stage start-up scheme. © 2012 IEEE.
